News - Summit Energy’s, Jake Jenkins wasn’t surprised in the rezoning approval for his plastic melting plant this week, but he’s holding off on the celebration until further details around the holding clause are known. “Really, we won’t know if anything is acceptable to us until after we see the development plan,” Jenkins said. Council, in a 5-1 recorded vote, supported the rezoning of the entire former Hershey plant to allow for Light Industrial - Special Exception (Holding) so plant owners can move forward in their approvals process. The holding provision would mean the zoning amendment would not be complete until the town has received a document confirming the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change’s (MOECC) approval of the plant and execution of a development agreement (referenced above) between the town and Summit Energy. Jenkins’ isn’t sure what to expect in the development agreement, but does know what would constitute a deal breaker for Summit Energy. “Anything that stops us from conducting our business as we see fit,” Jenkins said. He noted the MOECC would monitor truck storage, noise and any emissions. That was of prime concern to Bill Dobson, Montague beef farmer and reeve of Montague Township, who was a delegation representing himself this past Monday. He asked for council to defer their decision until further consultation with food producers and the community could be conducted.
“I’m here to voice my disappointment on Quinn said. the decision not to allow people to speak at the Dec. 8 meeting,” Dobson said.
