News - The dirt is already flying at the former site of the old barn. Local businesses in support of the Gerry Lowe Memorial Sens RINK (Recreation Investment in Neighbourhoods for Kids) pledged to begin the construction phase of the NHL-size open air hockey rink the day after formally breaking ground on the project Aug. 20. “I look forward to seeing everyone
on the rink in the fall,” said Rob Garvin who represented the Gerry Lowe Memorial Foundation at the celebration. Every individual who approached the mic to speak that Wednesday had one common name on his or her lips - Gerry Lowe. “That’s the reason we’re all here today,” said Cyril Leeder, president of the Ottawa Senators. Lowe’s working friendship with Leeder’s father brought the two men together on many occasions. Leeder said
of all the times Lowe asked for Senators tickets to games, etc. it was always with the hope of lifting someone else’s spirits. Elaine Lowe took the mic to express her family’s thanks for honouring her late husband in this way. “My skates are sharpened and I’m ready to participate,” Mrs. Lowe said. Garvin said this rink speaks to Lowe’s legacy of making sure no one was withSee RINK page SF2
Business - In the fight to create economic prosperity across Lanark County an innovative business support centre concept proposed by Valley Heartland CFDC could be the “game changer” municipalities have been looking for. “We stand unprecedented in being able to change our rural economy and be able to seize opportunity,” said Susan Fournier, executive director of Valley Heartland CFDC during an Aug. 25 presentation to Smiths Falls councillors. The concept is to create a place where existing and new start businesses in Lanark and North Leeds will have access to critical resources and facilities needed to grow their businesses. “It’s a miracle grow for business,” Fournier said. The centre, which is 5,000 square feet in size, will provide access to industry experts, professional workshops, mentorship and trainers. As well, homebased businesses can tap into offices, work stations and a boardroom that all can be rented for an hour or a day to meet their needs. Currently, the CFDC rents out its boardroom to clients and Fournier reports: “we can’t keep up with demand.” The CFDC hopes to begin work on the centre Sept. 2, 2014 to accommodate the growing need for its services. She said they have 80 business prospects

they are working with and 12 start-up businesses in the early stages. “They are basically waiting for us to open the doors,” Fournier said. The sectors the centre will focus on include: young entrepreneurs, innovation, IT, women entrepreneurs, niche manufacturing, and food processing. The use of emerging technologies is a growing area reality for business in the county with RiskLogik in Almonte, DominKnow in Perth that has expanding into Kanata and Tweed in Smiths Falls opening its doors. “This is a game changer for our region,” Fournier said. She went on to say one Lanark County business has been accepted into the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) and four more are making application. “That in itself is putting us on the map,” Fournier said. To get these businesses growing Fournier made a presentation to Smiths Falls Committee of the Whole Aug. 25 where she asked for $30,000 of seed money support for the centre split into two payments ($15,000 now and $15,000 in January 2015). This money would help to open the facility at the Gallipeau Centre in Smiths Falls by mid-to-late October this year. Fournier confirmed she is also asking Rideau Lakes Township for See CENTRE page SF2
