Next General Meeting ON REQUEST FROM SECRETARY

Club News I stopped by the Palm Beach County Shooting Complex on the 19th after their inaugural charity sporting clays tournament. It was well attended with 120 shooters.

The complex is very impressive! The trap and skeet fields look very professional and in their own way are as beautifully inviting as the fields at South Florida Shooting Club.

Granted they are a ways from being finished, but you want to shoot them just by looking at them. The Stations on the sporting clays ring are also nicely finished with some raised to aid the presentations.

When queried as to when the trap, bunker, and skeet field will be ready, the manager Brian O’Conner was hopefully optimist for July or August.

I wanted to ask 2021 or 2022, but I refrained from my usual sarcastic pessimism. Needless to say it will be a welcome addition to the great shooting opportu-

nities we have here in South Florida.

June’s Sporting Clay’s tournament had 51 shooters attending. Luis Herrara led the field followed closely by Oleg Pyrig with 94 and 93 respectively.

The skeet shoot was attended by four shooters.

Joe Loitz led the 12 ga. event and Joe Bianculli led the 20 and Doubles events.

The Trapshoot was attended by 17 shooters, firing at 2,200 targets.

Dax Demena led the Singles with a lone 96 and led the Doubles with a lone 87.

Alex Riera was Runner-Up in both events with a 95 and 85 respectively.

Not much else to report.

Trail Trap and Skeet has their second trapshoot on Saturday, July 17th.

Magazine Review ShotgunSports – 2021 June Mark H. Taylor presents an article this month on gun fit containing few unique points. All the usual terminology is defined and explained. If you are seeking a primer on gun fitting this one is quite good. When it comes to gun fit two the main points to consider are getting the gun to shoot where you are looking and minimizing recoil. Always missed is whether the gun is set up to permit the best possible freedom of swing to the target. Proper mount is the basis for freedom of swing. Both should be part of the gun fitting process. Correcting a shooter’s mount is always a consideration if their mount causes a physical limitation to their swing. As difficult as it is, making an adjustment to the mount will pay long term benefits. Only then will a gun fitting truly aid a shooter to reach their full potential. __________________________________ Mark Twain is credited with saying, “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, most of which never happened.”

The original quote is a less humorous one from the roman writer and satirist, Seneca.

Regardless of its origin the quote underlines a human flaw we all share, projecting our current circumstances into a future fraught with failure and misery. Of course, the subsequent anxiety and irrational thoughts this creates doesn’t play well with any athletic activity, especially when we are trying to knock a clay target out of the air with a swarm of lead pellets.

Michael J. Keyes, M.D. again passes out wisdom and advice on the mental game with this month’s topic being match stress.

Paying heed to the quote about imagined troubles, projecting the results of our shooting into the future and how it will affect our averages, social acceptance, chances of winning, and our own self-esteem does not aid in breaking a target. It most

assuredly hinders our shooting at every turn. This all boils down to anxiety of the unknown and trying to control the outcome. How do you overcome this and the other causes of match stress?

Michael throws out the usual solutions of deliberate, focused practice, skill building (physical and mental), and inuring yourself to competition by competing in as many competitions as possible. By improving in all these arenas of your sporting life you should see a subsidence of match stress through a general increase in selfconfidence. Also, recording your progress

will show you where you are in the path to improvement and will also help to reduce the range of negative thoughts holding you back. Seeing your progress builds confidence and by mass effect reduces your tendency to imagine the negative.

Can you learn to increase your control over your thoughts and can you learn to funnel them into positive and logical ones rather than irrational and negative ones? Yes, and being aware of the pitfalls of negative thought strings is the first step. Pulling your concentration back to breaking the target and thinking of nothing else is challenging.

Acknowledge negative thoughts then get back to thinking only of seeing and breaking the target. Process, process, process. Break the target as perfectly as possible. Focus on the process and you will naturally forget to worry about the future. Stay in the present. Few things more satisfying than seeing a ball of smoke hanging in the sky from a perfectly broken target.

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – 2021 June Bob Palmer brings up a good point this month. He discusses how Olympic Shooters are sometimes more concerned with quota spots than they are about competitions where quota spots aren’t at stake.

What he probably misses is the fact they don’t get to go to those other competitions if they don’t get a quota spot, but the concept is correct, all competitions are important and we shouldn’t put a priority on some over others. They all matter.

By giving less at a smaller shoot or one without All-American points you’re cheating yourself by not preparing for the larger shoots. Use the small shoots as your mental training ground for the big competitions. Bob likes to ramp up your adrenaline so you are ready for the big competitions. Pretend you are shooting at the Grand every time you step to the line, so you are prepared for the real thing. Get advice from a coach who has some “Big Show” experience and discuss issues with

them. Ask for qualified help to shorten your learning curve and get solutions and suggestions outside of your experience.

As always, Bob recommends the 30-minute pre-competition isolation before every event. Take 30 minutes before the event to prepare yourself mentally. Get away from everyone and prep yourself mentally. Bob thinks you should spend some time after every competitive event thinking about how your friends are impacted by your results and how it would impact the top shooters. I don’t get this, mainly because you need to reflect on how you are impacted by their results. Think backwards from this and ask, how do I feel about my competitors results. If their results have no impact on you, why would your shooting impact them? Read the article for yourself for more insight. Finally, celebrate your successes and don’t be frightened from setting bold and unrealistic goals for the Grand. You just might surprise yourself.

Foot position is not all that important in trapshooting. It is vitally important in skeet and in sporting. Ian Darroch has some ideas as to correct technique for trapshooting foot positioning and most of it is good. Set your feet for neutrality on a post without favoring one target over another is his strongest suggestion. Not too much shift for either the angle or the straight-away. Nora Ross believes in the Modern Stance and its neutral positioning for all posts as do the Olympic coaches. I agree with them and so does Ian. He brings up the point, not all traphouses are square to the machine or the posts. Some are biased. Silver Dollar has several as does South Florida Shooting club. You can see this by stepping to the center of post 3 and comparing the center of the house to the center of the walkway.

Some houses are not square to walkways.

If they aren’t adjust your position to square up with the trap.

On a side note, check out page 53 and page 80 of this issue. Two write-ups on Florida shooters. Page 80 is a nice coverage of my friends Bruce and Alex Formhals. Bruce is our AIM Director for Florida and has been doing a great job recruiting Youth Shooters into trapshooting. Alex is a promising Sub-Junior shooter who is on the cusp of being our newest All-American. I wish them well!

The most important rule is comfort. Just because the books or Youtube videos say something, if it isn’t comfortable doing it then don’t. Ian agrees. Correctly, Ian believes you should lean into the target as you swing with more than half of your weight on your front or lead foot. Never lean back to move the gun (a golden rule of all clay target shooting). Don’t stand too upright as this can contribute to leaning back as you reach the limits of your swing radius. Personally, I tell my students to stand athletically with a slight lean into the target. ________________________________ 9

Magazine Review Shotgun Sportsman – 2021 July/August Chris Batha takes on wingshooting this month. You can be an accomplished clay target shooter yet be totally at a loss when confronted with a target with actual feathers and a wingbeat. No doubt the hardest thing to learn is the patience to produce a smooth mount and move. The English shooting instructor Peter Blakely, who years ago emigrated to Texas, admitted his own humiliation when first confronted by our native quail.

Once he learned to suppress his startle re-

sponse to their explosive flush he found his true love in wingshooting.

“Smooth is steady and steady is swift!” stated Wyatt Earp as to his success as a gunfighter and the same is true in wingshooting.

A smooth, unhurried mount to your target with hard focus on the bird’s head, beak, or bill is the ticket to success. Chris teaches the Churchill Method of move, mount, and shoot in one fluid motion. What kind of swing method do you use? This is truly up to the shooter. Some make the insertion just behind the bird, others use an intercept insertion, others go to the exact spot needed for sustained lead. Every shooter is different and sees the insertion point differently. They instinctively go to where they will match the flight of their quarry and see the correct sight picture. Sight picture for the Churchill method is never explained or discussed. You insert as you see fit for your style of shooting.

Chris throws out suggestions for scouting. I agree with his suggestions for doves (the focus of this article). They tend to follow field and fence lines, tree lines, and corners of fields. Recently harvested fields are a natural draw as are gravel areas and watering spots.

Pre-season practice should include skeet targets and tower shots. South Florida Shooting Club has tons of towers. You could spend a day practicing just the towers on the Quail, Sandhill, Gator, and Super Sporting Courses. Finally, this is Florida. Tons of doves, lots of good shooting, and formidable weather conditions. The closest I ever came to heat stroke was dove hunting at the Dupuis dove field one year. Take a stool, one of those bucket seats that swivel is great like Chris suggests. Also, you can put ice in the bucket along with water and power bars.

Good luck, this seems like a good year in the offing. Reading the regulations, dove shooting hours aren’t limited to afternoons on the first season as they usually are. We can start shooting one half hour before sunrise and stop at sunset. Shoot during the cooler early hours when doves are active. Nice!

ing, I agree. As to the grip, he likes pointing his index finger along the barrel as do I.

Paul Giambrone III addresses one critical area of technique this month, grip on the forend.

Now, if you’ve ever seen Paul grip a forend you may wonder how he can give advice on it. He is however a product of his youth.

When he was young, I have no doubt he held the forend this way because it was the most comfortable way to hold it, which also explains why he swings off his heels. If you didn’t know, many youth shooters stretch their arms way out to the end of the forend and lean back to comfortably hold the shotgun up.

It’s a strength issue. The weight of the shotgun forces this on these shooters and I suspect Paul was one of those young shooters learning this way.

Needless to say it works for the multi-time World Skeet Champion. This is not how he suggests holding the shotgun. He only says he prefers holding “further down the forend” rather than in the middle as most shooter do. He advises against holding too near the receiver as it encourages arm swing-

He thinks all five fingers should be engaged with the forend. I again agree, but for me who grew up shooting a Model 12 pump, it

was a matter of pumping a second or third shell into the chamber when I was hunting.

You need all five fingers engaged with the forend to do this properly.

I doubt he ever saw Dan Bonillas shoot. Dan curled his pinky and ring finger under the forend.

Paul doesn’t like this. To each his own.

The grip should be light yet firm. No tension in your arms or shoulders. Like a golf club or tennis racket, a shotgun is a piece of sporting equipment and should be handled the same way, soft yet firm on contact.

The advice on gripping golf clubs and tennis rackets applies nicely to shooting. I think it was Sam Snead who said: “You should be holding the golf club with the same pressure you would hold a small bird.” Firm, yet loose and relaxed. Same is true of a tennis racket or shotgun.

On contact is the only time you tighten your grip to guide the ball to your intended target. As Paul says, swing “fluidly and smoothly”.

Magazine Review Gil and Vicki Ash discuss how physical (visual) problems are sometimes the issue with shooters when they cannot selfdiagnose a problem. Their example for right -handed shooters is the exact opposite of what I experience, so I cannot even begin to analyze what they are saying. Suffice it to say, if a certain presentation is giving you a problem, seek out a coach who is strong on diagnosing problems. You can’t expect a

coach to diagnose a problem without seeing you shoot and every shooter is different. There are no generic diagnoses. _________________________________ What is a post-shot routine? Everything that happens after an shot up until the preshot for the next target starts. Bill Miller interviewed shooters about their post-shot routine. Here are the highlights. Dominic Gross replays how he used his eyes after each shot then if he misses he re-evaluates his approach searching for corrections if needed. Haylyn Hanks evaluates how it looked and how it felt. She does this after the Station is complete. Her evaluation includes querying herself as to whether the targets were clearer in her vision as she progressed through the Station or did she let up and lose visual clarity.

Also, she looks back on the feel for the targets. Did the targets break in flow with the shot or did she worry whether she would break them? This is a mental and fundamental check as the event progresses. Like a kick in the pants to pay more attention or stay in the relaxed “Zone” state. Will Fennell is also all about his visual focus on the target.

Did he see it clearly as he broke it.

Again, a mental check to see how his focus is working.

Magazine Review How do we become more comfortable with competition? John Shima gives his advice on the subject this month. John reviews how we must be able to switch ourselves on to shoot our best. This means trusting our sub-conscious and focusing our conscious on seeing the target. How we wake ourselves up to switch into competitive mode is something every shooter must learn for themselves. Myself it is controlling my

breathing and building a rhythm to it, so it is insync with my shooting. Some people have a catch-phrase “head-down”, “see the target”, etcetera. To each his own.

To build competitive experience, try creating friendly competitions between your shooting partners as you practice. This is a separate practice, a separate type of deliberate practice, not intended to replace working on fundamentals. Enter as many kinds of competitions as you can. A trapshooter can enter sporting clays and skeet events to place themselves in pressure situations and sporting and skeet shooters can do the same. For sporting shooters I recommend shooting as many charity events as possible in the early stages of your competitive career. These are shoots where perfection is expected and the pressure is to shoot a perfect or near perfect score. The next stage for all shooters is entering as many competitive events in their discipline as possible.

The goal is to shoot the target without the mental distractions of the outside world. Watch the target appear, focus on it, and execute your shot without conscious thought.

Again, breaking a target perfectly is the goal, not winning. If you break each target as perfectly as you can, winning will follow. Process, process, process, watch the target break.
