Club News We saw 25 shooters at the last Sporting Clays shoot in September. Rodrigo Mehich led the field by one with a 95. Luis Herrera was close behind with a lone 94. October shoot was cancelled and hopefully this is the last cancellation for the year. The Merritt and Wolf shoots should go off as planned.

There was no skeet shoot in September because of lack of attendance.

Ten shooters shot 1,300 targets at the September Trapshoot.

Ernesto Yamhure and Servando Valdes led all shooters with 91’s in the Singles. Isaias Vargas had a lone 90. Dax Demena led the Doubles with an 86.

Attendence on Monday nights for the Youth Program has been excellent during September. Special thanks to Ramiro Rodriquez and Larry Gatz for their help making this program as exceptional as it is.

November is just around the corner bringing cooler

weather and the first of the snowbirds. I look forward to seeing my friends from up north as they attend all of our shoots and come to the park to practice.

I am going to try to get to the Palm Beach Shooting Center sometime soon to shoot the sporting clays ring and to find out how the trap and skeet are coming along.

Can’t tell you much about relief as to availability of ammunition. I can only advise you to buy it whenever you find it. Walmart is still getting shipments but sadly they have also raised their prices. Most of their ammo is now almost $9 a box now. All I know is, if I get another chance to buy 50 flats, I will. Hope I don’t have to mortgage the house to pay for them.

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET-NATION - 2021 September Is there a difference between shooting socially and competitive practice sessions? John Shima believes there should be a clear line drawn between the two. John goes so far as suggesting you wear different clothes and shoot a different gun on days spent shooting socially versus competitive practice or tournament shooting. It’s all about your intention that day, shooting for fun or shooting for improvement.

Practice days are spent running through specific drill routines or working on specific target presentations, analyzing the results as practice progresses. Not something done when out for a morning of shooting with friends. Concern with mechanical elements of your game such as turning from the ankles up during your swing, your visual tar-

get pickup, and your mental game are also a fundamental to a good practice session. Finally, some practice sessions are devoted to shooting rounds for score, “forgiving and forgetting” your mistakes, concentrating on the process of shooting rather than analysis. On competition days concentrate on consistency. Competition days plan your arrival allowing enough time for event preparation and to shoot a practice round.

John brings up an interesting point about pausing before taking deliberate action. We all fall into bad habits, acting without thinking, or falling into an unintentional rhythm without realizing it.

Pause for a moment before acting. Stick with your set of pre-station routines and pre-shot routines. Don’t glide over them, recognize their importance, that’s why you set them up! Consistency is the key during competition. Take deliberate action and go through your routines. This is especially true in that last moment before calling for the target as you settle into the Quiet Eye mode. This moment creates the quiet mind you need to pick-up the target visually.

Shooting isn’t only about competitions. Concentration burnout by practicing all the time is a real possibility. Break up the monotony of practice by shooting socially. If you’re a skeet shooter, shoot sporting clays, trap, or five-stand with friends for fun. Define your intention and take deliberate action.

I read parts of Gil and Vicki Ash’s article several times this month to fully understand what they meant. They have a valid point in their article and it’s genuinely good advice so maybe this will help. Start with the premise, targets approaching from the right for a right-handed shooter are easier to see and shoot than targets approaching from the left. The key here is “approaching” from a set direction. Targets starting on your left and going away from you are a different issue as are targets to your right. It is the approach from the right or left that’s important here.

The key issue is how to get a better view of the target approaching from the offending direction and for right-handers this is the target approaching from the left. You are visually blocked on this target and the solution is shooting low gun for the left side, approaching target. Keep your nose pointed at the target at it approaches, mount and shoot.

I do this in skeet on the Station 5 High-house target.

It’s a target that has a long approach from the left and it’s easy to shoot behind it for several reasons including the visual issues Gil and Vicki suggest. More importantly, most right-handers end up slowing their swing is they swing too long on this target and while the sight picture looks correct, you are actually slowing down and ending up behind the target. This is why I call for the target from a low-gun mount and as it crosses the field I move then mount into the target, skipping the long swing or long wait at a hold point half-way along its flight path. Also mounting the gun from a low-gun position seems to negate the natural slowing down of the swing that happens when you swing the gun too long.

Keep your nose pointed at the target as it comes from the left and you will have your full visual field on the target. Mount into the target and shoot. A simple solution to a problem7 target.

Magazine Review Mike Rouleau presents his ideas on performance logging this month, giving detailed ways to examine your score card looking for trends. Take a picture of your score card and look for identifiers that show where your attention wans, like lost targets in the station’s last pair. Two solutions for this are practicing shooting single targets with the goal of breaking as many in a row as you can. When you miss is it because you were rushing to get to a set goal of 5 in a row? Examine your shooting rhythm. Did you rush your pre-shot routine?

Each of these could be targets where you have technical flaws in your game. Mike also color codes stations where he hit the lowest percentage of targets. Most courses leave their tournament target setup in place for a month or several weeks.

Go back and shoot the course concentrating on those problem stations.

Some people track the types of targets they miss during an event. If you’re missing all the teal, right to left, or rabbits, focus on just those targets during several practice sessions. Others take detailed notes on nutrition, exercise, their mental state on the day of the shoot, what they learned that day, and how they felt about their performance. They also write suggestions for the next practice round with comments on how to approach their problem targets. Phrase those comments in a positive way, “stay in front of the target”, not “don’t get caught behind the target”.

One shooter he polled kept particularly detailed notes on his mental state and even noted pages in three sports psychology books that were pertinent to helping himself past his mental shortfalls. He kept notes on several aspects of his mental game: sticking to his pre-shot routine, rhythm, ability to let misses go, focus, etc. He then used a three-step process to fix the issue. Diagnose the problem,

than just looking at the score.

Mark Chesnut has four expert tips for us this month. First, keep your eyes on the target. Mark suggests looking at the target’s rings or the sun’s reflection off its surface. Honestly, as someone who is legally blind without my glasses, I have no idea what he’s talking about. I never see the rings or details of the bird. When hunting I look at the bird’s head and most times I can see their eyes, but a target’s rings are beyond me. If you can see this kind of detail, then use it to concentrate on the target. It’s the same in all sports, concentrate on the object ball in this case a target and you will swing more freely without conscious input.

Second, concentrate on the process. Focus on the target and everything else will take care of itself.

Next, put in your choke tubes at the beginning of an event and don’t change them. Some shooters will

Your Post-shot routine should be a corrective process. After a bad station or post commit to going back later to work on the problem. Don’t carry the issue with you as you move on. Don’t dwell on it but commit to fixing the problem in the future. Misses shouldn’t cause you to speed up your shooting rhythm as it does for some people. There is also the tendency to slow down and become too careful or the opposite to become careless on difficult targets. Face them with the same rhythm in your shooting as you would any other target.

Finally, we return to focus on the target so your shooting is coming from a subconscious mental realm rather than from the conscious state.

———————————————————— Interesting article by John Shima on mentoring this month. This is about taking a newer shooter to the gun club and helping them with their shooting.

Mentoring isn’t about instruction, it’s about being there for them and getting comfortable with the gun club experience. Emphasize safety and give them encouraging coaching like telling them when they make a nice shot. Keep it fun and positive.

One practice strategy Gil and Vicki promote is to walk up to a station and announce where the break point was going to be. This forces your brain synch up with the announcement and recall past experiences with this type of target.

Doing this helps activate your subconscious ability to make the shot.

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – 2021 September Practicing under the lights was always a mandate before going to Vandalia every August. If you aren’t familiar with night shooting, it can make for a quick exit off the shoot-off field. Ian Darroch is correct in recommending getting experience shooting at night before heading to the Grand in Sparta. The same is true when heading to San Antonio for the World’s in skeet or Nationals in sporting clays. If you want to be successful in these venues, practicing night targets at Markham Park is my recommendation.

Morris Stinebring had a way of taking you out of

your rhythm in shoot-offs. As soon as you would fire off a shot, he would call for his target and leave you still loading your shotgun and effectively shooting by yourself. This can be very disconcerting, convincing his opponent to speed up to match him. Ian talks about being in shoot-off situations with opponents who threw shells in front of him or they would shake his hand aggressively at their introduction. Others would wave their gun around on their post or would show up late for the shoot-off. Develop your own shooting rhythm and stay in your zone when dealing with these situations. One target at a time and concentrate on the process of shooting.

If you always start on Post 4 or 5 when shooting trap, Ian suggests practicing shooting lead-off in anticipation of this possibility for shoot-offs. Same is true in skeet or sporting clays. If you always lead-off or shoot at the end of the rotation, practice shooting a squad position out of your norm. Finally, night targets look different, practice shootoff situations and night targets before you head off to a big shoot.

—————————————— After a disappointing loss, don’t beat yourself up when you review the event in your mind. More importantly, let some time go by before reflecting on it. Bob Palmer believes you will be harder on yourself if your reflection on the event occurs immediately after it. Review it a few days later to put it in perspective.

This allows viewing it in a more positive light and will no doubt be a more realistic reflection.

Bob is big on pre-shoot visualization of success and suggests visualizing a future of successful outcomes as if this is the expected result. Try to visualize the good feeling winning brings with it. During a competition, immediately replay missed targets, turning them into broken ones.

Correct the technical mistake you made and erase the memory of the miss.

Finally, replay the shoot in detail after the event. Make corrections in your mind for every misstep and turn it into a positive memory.

Bob believes you should be “self-reflecting” all the time whether you are practicing, shooting in an event, during your best and worst competitions, and in your social interactions at the shoot. Your review shouldn’t be only target related. You need to assess your social interactions and mental state as part of your whole game. If a missed target causes a mental breakdown during an event, review the circumstanc-

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – 2021 October The Bartholow Brothers, Foster and Matt, give their suggestions this month on stance in trapshooting. Comfort is the main idea with other ideas that are universal to all shotgunning. Stand to allow your body fluid motion.

They are believers in a whole-body swing from ankles up. The real crux of this is to move your shoulder and gun to the target using your whole body. With the gun in a fixed place on your shoulder and your head in tandem with this you use your whole body to move the body, head, and shoulder in the direction of the target.

Move your nose to the target with the gun and shoulder moving all together.

Feet should be shoulder width apart and keep your arms locked in position with the gun and shoulder. The swing should always be one smooth move with no acceleration at the beginning or the end.

One smooth move.

As to how you should face the trap from any Post, stand so that you can get to the right or left target on each Post with the

same ease. Things to note as you swing, do your knees break down when you swing in one direction over another on the Post, does your face come off the gun as you swing, is your swing one consistent speed. Any problem here can be fixed by adjusting your stance.

This month’s issue has a nice write-up on the Olympic team and their stellar shooting at this year’s games. Also included is an interview with Joe Fanizzi about his Silver Medal performance at the World FITASC championships. Both are a

We learn by making mistakes then making corrections that are permanent in nature. Michael J. Keyes, M.D. gives suggestions this month on making those corrections permanent. He tells us to use a “learning adaptive” schedule to fix our mistakes. Learn and practice basics to solidify our skills level. Next, we push those skills to their upper limits but not beyond. Once this is established, start practicing random sets of challenges to see how your skills are working. These challenges, when we fail, are then worked on using our fundamental skill knowledge until they’re conquered.

On conquering a challenge, move on to another target presentation. This builds knowledge and skill rather than attempting too many challenging targets at random without going back to the basics.

In skeet we conquer the incoming targets first, learning good basics along the way. Next work on the outgoers, High 2 for example.
