Club News In case you haven’t seen me lately, I got my right shoulder surgery two weeks ago. All went well this time and I got my wound dressing off last Friday. All looked good including the X-rays. So far I’m very happy with it. Recovery should be much shorter for this one, already have more mobility with it than I had with the left shoulder after 6 months. Bud Wolfe shoot went off well. We had several shooters who donated their trophy money to the club and Youth Program. Sincere thanks goes out to Daniel Bingel, Jr., James Baldwin, Danny Amritt, Wayne Amritt, and Rodrigo Mehich. Thanks from the club! Give me another month to recover and I plan on giving some shooting clinics this Spring. Specifically I would like to give a Lady’s clinic, Trap doubles, Trap, Skeet, and beginner Sporting

Clays. If you have any interest in these let me know. In this issue you will see a “FOR SALE” section. Just so we are clear, I put that together for these two sellers. I am not doing that again. If you have something for sale, put together a flyer in a Word document and send it to me. This way I can edit it if needed. Putting those pages together takes way too much time. If you want me to do it, the club would expect a commission of some kind, then I would be willing to do all the work. From what I hear, the Park has a full roster of employees for the first time in quite a while. I for one truly appreciate what they do, especially how they make the club a welcome member of the park. Thanks! Joe Loitz 954-857-5278 jloit@bellsouth.net 4

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – January 2024 Michael J. Keyes, M.D. is back on the Match Stress trail again this month and promises to continue for the next two articles. Michael doesn’t actually give any advice on how to deal with match stress in his article, but he does suggest a few things that I agree with. First, expose yourself to match stress by becoming familiar with competitive stress. Shoot tournaments as often as possible and at as many different clubs as you can. There are six sporting clays clubs in the South Florida area that you can get to in two hours or less and shoot registered tournaments: Markham Park, Gulf Coast Clays, OK Corral, Quail Creek, Vero Beach, and South Florida Shooting Club. You can also practice at the Palm Beach Shooting Complex. Depending on where you live pick two or three of these clubs as your regular clubs to shoot monthly. Add in one club that’s outside your usual travel radius every month: Sarasota, FishHawk, Tampa Bay Clays, or Polk Sporting Clays. You can do the same with Trap or Skeet. With Trap you can shoot: Markham, Gulf Coast, Palm Beach, and Trail Glades on a regular circuit every month. Same with Skeet: Markham, Trail Glades, South Florida, and Port Malabar. Sadly, most skeet shooting takes place north of Interstate 4 in Florida, but if you want to be a competi-

tive shooter, you need to shoot a tournament at least every other weekend. The point is, without exposure to tournament shooting you won’t know how to deal with the pressure of the larger shoots in January, February, and March regardless of the discipline. Tournament shooting will expose all your flaws both mental and technical. Only by experiencing tournaments on a regular basis will you be able to reach the higher levels of any sport. Practice cannot prepare you for this. Let’s see what Michael has to say next month.

ClayTarget Nation – December 2023 There is truth in Gil and Vicki Ash’s mantra to visually rehearse the shot in your mind. Even in Trap, where you don’t know exactly where the target is going, I would remind myself before every call, there are only three targets on each post: angle, straight-away, and quarter. This reminded me, there are only three possible targets on each post and I am going to get one of them. No surprises, recognize the target as quickly as possible by looking to see one of those three targets leave the house. Granted, I did not review the actual move I would make to the target or the break point. Those things came automatically once I recognized which presentation had left the house. In Gil and Vicki’s context, Sporting Clays, you know exactly where the target is coming from and where it is going. You can visualize the shot in your mind before calling for the target. In sporting you factor in the need to set up the second target and you have the whole dance imagined before calling for the

target. Their article this month is about shooting without thinking. They have a large preamble involving practice and memory recall, but the crux of their advice is visualizing the shot so that you can execute it without thinking. Agreed, visualize the shot before calling for your target, regardless of the discipline. Trigger control and sight picture awareness are two things that go hand in hand. Holding off on a shot until the sight picture is correct is oddly one of the most advanced skills a shotgunner can develop. It would seem obvious, don’t pull the trigger until the sight picture is right, but we aren’t all wired that way. I remember learning how to break a rightangle target in trap. That would have been 1970 for those of you interested in such things. Every shooter will swing at and shoot behind their first right-angles. Unlike most beginning shooters, I saw this clearly and diagnosed that I wasn’t holding off on the trigger long enough. I quickly got the hang of it and rightangles have never been a problem for me. This is a combination of learning trigger control and sight picture awareness. Skeet shooters are encouraged to make their stance, position on the station, gun mount, hold point, and look point consistent. This includes how and when they rotate their body to the target. If they aren’t consistent, their break point will vary, as will their sight picture. If their setup isn’t consistent, they may have to rely on a “recovery shot” to break the target. A recovery shot is relying on trigger control and sight picture awareness, just like in trap. 7

Magazine Review

ClayTarget Nation – December 2023

Are you a predator or prey when you shoot? John Shima equates shooting defensively as a person who is in the prey mode while a person who is focusing on just breaking the next target is in predator mode. To shoot “not to miss” or defensively is to shoot for outcome or score. To focus on breaking the next target means you are focusing on the process of shooting, outcome be damned. Shooting for outcome always gets the conscious mind involved and as we all should know, the conscious mind is not the most effective way to react athletically. Watch the target and commit to the break point is the best approach. Paul Giambrone, III discusses the recovery shot in skeet this month. He suggests lack of visual discipline is the cause of most recovery shots. True soft focus at the look point to

pick up the target in your peripheral vision is mandatory. Next is keeping your body relaxed when you call and during the move. Smooth relaxed movement to the target is the key along with 100% attention on the target. Any thing less and you will pull the trigger based on a timing in your mind, “It’s time to pull the trigger”, so you do, regardless of what you see. When forced into a recovery shot, remember, trigger control and sight picture awareness, but prevent it entirely by consistent setup and soft focus at the look point.

8

Become your best self is John Shima’s message in his second article this month. I think the best line in this article is, “Shooters who are emotionally attached to outcomes tend to lose their composure when outcomes are disappointing for them.” Their emotional reaction to their disappointment will cause failures in their mental and visual discipline, especially their visual discipline. John suggests that a shooter master their sport by “learning to establish an internal connection with his or her natural shooting ability.” This means learning how you shoot targets, not necessarily mastering “tactics that result in hitting targets.” While it sounds right to master tactics that break targets, there may be a technique that is more natural to you mentally, visually, or physically. Copy-

ing a top shooter’s style may sound good, but it may not be in your best interests. This assumes you can figure out how you approach breaking a target versus the rest of the world’s approach. Don’t fall into the usual traps where anxiety about missing eats you alive because missing creates a selfrejection due to your failure. Score is not always a good reflection of your progress as a shooter. Let go emotional attachment to the result of a shot and concentrate on executing a perfect shooting process. Watch the target break.

Magazine Review DELTA WATERFOWL – WINTER 2023 Brad Fitzpatrick, Tom Roster, and L.P. Brezny are the country’s current ballistic guru when it comes to shotgunning science. In this issue of DELTA WATERFOWL, Brad tested barrel length and its impact on ammunition velocity. Testing different barrel lengths and different ammo loads proved there is less than a 25 fps difference between barrel lengths. Barrel length is more important in the handling and balance than any velocity difference. In his opinion there is, “no reason to lose sleep over barrel length”.

10

SHOOTING SPORTSMAN – January-February 2024 As I said earlier, Tom Roster is one of the country’s ballistic gurus. This issue Tom reviews HEVI-Metal Extreme waterfowl loads. HEVIMetal is a mix of 70% steel beneath a layer of 30% tungsten. The tungsten pellets are three sizes smaller than the steel pellets in these loads. Tom states these loads provide very dense patterns with significantly increased pellet counts. The shells are produced in 20 and 12 gauge, 3” loads. There Is a longrange load with No. 4 Tungsten mixed with No. 1 steel and a mid-range with No. 6 Tungsten mixed with No. 3 steel. There’s also a goose load with No. 2 Tungsten and BB steel. They are all 1 ¼ Oz.

at 1450 fps. These sound like good loads for a second or third shot in the field.

Some people create with words or with music or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run. I like to make people stop and say, 'I've never seen anyone run like that before.' It's more than just a race, it's a style. It's doing something better than anyone else. It's being creative.
