Symon Petliura: Fighting for the Freedom of Ukraine 2018 680 pp.ISBN 978-617-7173-89-1 This latest academic research brings to reader’s attention the Ukrainian vision of the historical events of 1917–1921 that have started with the failure of the Russian Empire and resulted in occupation of Ukraine by Bolsheviks and foundation of the Soviet Union. Symon Petliura was one of the key figures of Ukraine’s struggle for independence. He headed the Ukrainian Army in its fight against Bolsheviks as well as White forces and was one of the ministers in Ukrainian National Republic. The book provides the broad context of the events and complete image of Symon Petliura, who is portrayed from the beginning of his political career to his assassination by Russian agent in Paris in 1926. The author points out that Petliura’s figure was strongly discredited by Russian propaganda, which depicted him as an Antisemite responsible for Jewish pogroms. Rich historical material presented in the book allows to refute these historical myths. The book also contains interesting facts about Ukraine–Russia relations, and reflects over similarities with the latest events – the Ukrainian Revolution of 2014 and Russian military intervention in Ukraine that followed.

Chapter VI The man cut the engine and got outside. He listened. Although the daytime temperature was already close to summer, winter was still echoing at night. The man had a jacket on, but he was shivering still. He came up to the trunk and opened it. A dead brunette woman wearing a red dress was inside. In Hollywood movies, a murderer easily throws the corpse over his shoulder; however, everything happens differently in reality. Although the girl only weighed about 50 kilograms, once the man lifted her body on his shoulder, he almost bent in half under the weight — but went up the stairs anyway. The girl’s hands slapped his back now and again. He managed to move five storeys up confidently; after that, he had to stop at each stairwell to catch his breath. At last, the man made it to the top — the sixteenth floor. Breathing out heavily, the “carrier” set the girl down on the floor against a wall. As soon as he could breathe normally again, he dragged the body to the edge and pushed it down. The corpse hit the ground with a mute sound. The man peeked down, but nothing could be seen from that height. He pulled out a cigarette and lit. Although the air was even colder up here than it was elsewhere, the man stayed to smoke and look at the sleepy city. Without haste, the man came down again. He went around the building, arriving to the corpse that was now lying splayed out on the ground. The girl had fallen down on her face. The man turned her over with his foot and examined whatever had been left of her face. “That’s the thing,” he said and turned her back. He got into the car and turned on the engine, the AC and the seat heater. He left the construction site as quietly as he had entered it. “Hi there,” — he speed dialed a number. — “Everything’s been perfect.”
