SPRING 2019
Getting Traction by Annie Moyer Walking the dog this past winter was treacherous. There were many mornings when ice covered the sidewalks, and the streets weren’t much better. Also, 65 pounds of eager puppy at the end of the leash didn’t help, especially if there was another eager puppy approaching. It took a lot of focus not to get pulled out from under myself. I treasure these morning walks with my dog Prince. I sing songs to him. My phone stays out of reach. I smell the trees, the grass, the firewood in winter and the humidity in summer. I smile at passersby and try to make eye contact and say hello to each one. I plan my day, and rehearse my dharma talks. I think of my daughters and try to imagine what they’re doing at that moment (wait – they’re college students – it’s early morning – I know exactly what they’re doing and they won’t be awake for a few more hours!). A common technique for walking meditations is to be conscious of each foot as it touches the ground, tracing each footstep’s outline, one by one. This is essential to avoid slipping on ice, but what would our daily experiences be like if we paid this much attention to every step we took, even on dry solid ground? What would our relationships be like if we paid careful attention to each word spoken, each interaction executed between intimates and strangers alike? If we applied keen, sharp focus all the time, we’d root down in each moment, and from that anchored attention, spring into the next step with renewed energy and assuredness. New possibilities for compassionate care for ourselves and each other might appear. It’s true that what goes up must come down, but it’s also true that what gets planted down deeply will rise up fully and strongly. I can’t think of a reason not to cultivate awareness and nurture our surroundings with as much care as it takes to navigate an icy street. Oh – and it’s only fair to mention the other key to not getting pulled down on our walks: chewy treats in my pocket.

Community Partnership with Trade Roots: Fair Trade and Yoga Go Together The business of yoga is the business of people. Our work is to make connections, cultivate community, and create space where healing happens and bonds are forged. In considering how to reflect those values in every aspect of our business, we turned to the idea of fair trade in our retail space, and reached out to Lisa Ostroff, owner and founder of the Trade Roots gift shop and cafe in the Westover neighborhood of Arlington. In the seven years of running her shop, Lisa has also been making connections, cultivating community, and creating space where bonds are forged. She travels across the globe to meet artisans, sample their goods, and partner with them to bring their products to a robust market here in the U.S. She also hosts monthly “global dinners, runs a document and discussion series, and holds a Village Talk in which members of the community present and reflect on a variety of topics. Why fair trade? It allows hardworking men and women from developing countries, slums, small villages or in places of hardship to create, work, and sell their products by taking down many of the barriers to conventional trade. Talented craftspeople from countries across the world are recycling aluminum cans, textiles, and telephone wire to make beautiful and original jewelry, scarves, bags, and housewares. Their work reflects their cultural identity and is often quite different from what we find here. Fair trade respects and appreciates hardworking people, provides a living wage for marginalized populations, supports the conservation of the environment, and empowers women and people of color all over the globe. Choosing to shop ethically is easy these days. Whether at Trade Roots, Sun & Moon, or other fair trade stores, your purchasing power makes the difference in so many lives.

General Information & Fees Welcome to Sun & Moon Yoga We are a classic school of hatha yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment, which has shared the brilliance of yoga with many thousands of students since 1995. We keep our studios at a moderately comfortable room temperature, and provide careful instruction that favors safety and deep attention. We welcome beginners and new students at any time, and your first class is free. Three Ways to Yoga at Sun & Moon: 1. FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION Our classic “yoga school” option, we recommend this for those seeking to learn and study on a consistent basis with a primary teacher. This option provides excellent yoga education with a continuity of instruction and practice. Depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. Make up any missed classes in any other class on the current schedule, before or after your absence. Take all make-ups during the quarter for which you are registered; make-ups may not be carried forward. • $160 for 10 weekly classes through July 1 • After quarter begins, registrations may pro-rate all remaining weeks @$16/class • Seniors 60 and up take $10 off • Register for two weekly classes and take $50 off • Discounts during the first three weeks only; one discount per person
2. FLEX PASSES If you travel or your schedule is entirely unpredictable and it’s tough to commit to the entire quarter, or you like to mix up your experience and your teachers, we’re entirely flexible. These passes are good for six months for any class at any time. • $180 for ten • $120 for six • $22 for a single class drop-in
3. BLISS PASS For the yogis who want regular and frequent practice two or more times per week, and love coming to the many different class styles with our diverse teaching staff. Hassle-free enrollment – just sign up for monthly auto-renew to your credit card on our secure site, and show up whenever you like. • $135/month
YOGA ETIQUETTE AND WHAT TO WEAR Wear something comfy that’s not too loose and not too tight, and layer for temperature comfort. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. Changing rooms are available. Avoid perfume/ cologne or noisy jewelry. If you’re late to class, enter quietly and wait for centering to conclude before setting up props. Inform the teacher in advance if you need to leave early, and do not leave during final relaxation. Take your valuables into the room with you or secure them in your car. Cell phones should be silent and out of sight. Sun & Moon provides mats and other yoga props free of charge, as well as cleaning supplies if necessary. Those who are concerned about the hygiene of props are encouraged to bring their own. Sun & Moon reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be re-scheduled. Registered students may make up missed classes in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642 up to one hour before the start time of the next class.
REFUND AND CREDIT POLICIES AND TERMS Quarterly registered students: Please use discretion when requesting refunds or credits, as our teachers are compensated for your registration up front, and we offer a liberal make-up policy for missed classes. No refunds or credits are issued after the quarter has concluded; exceptions granted only for documented illness or injury. Refund and credit requests must be made via our online request form found at sunandmoonstudio.com/policiesand-fees. Refunds for classes will incur a $20 administrative fee. Refunds may be made by check (may take up to three weeks to process) or online to your credit card (may take up to one week to process). Studio credit will be applied to your online account, is valid for one year from the date issued, and incurs no administrative fee. Studio credit applies to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash, merchandise, or a future refund. We do not issue refunds or studio credits for fewer than three classes. Don’t miss Dianne Bondy in Fairfax, April 26 - 28 Bridging the Divide: Yoga, Body Image, Diversity, & Social Justice Starting 20 years ago and today with nearly 30,000 followers on Instagram, Dianne Bondy has been disrupting the homogenous yoga world, empowering students to come to the mat as they are, educating teachers on the need for inclusivity in yoga, and leading systematic change within the yoga industrial complex. Her first book, Yoga for Everyone: 50 Poses for Every Type of Body, debuts this spring. On body image: “If you look at higher weight bodies with disdain, consider where and how you learned that, and whether you’re willing to do the work to unlearn it. Are you committed to the idea that ALL bodies deserve respect and compassion and access?” On politics and social action: “The message we are sending the world through yoga is that the divine resides in all of us. If we are indeed practicing yoga and not just asana, then we are compelled by our divine nature to seek out equality and equity for all. My role as a yoga teacher is to help shape consciousness. My role as an activist is to help shift consciousness.” On yoga and race: “I feel like there’s still a divide between people of color getting into the yoga space. It is up to us as yoga professionals to seek out those communities, but…be especially careful if you’re not from that community not to roll in and come in as the saviour. Work with that community. Ask what you can do, ask how you can serve.”
