SUMMER 2019
No Sweat – We’re All About the OM by Annie Moyer In a recent conversation about yoga in Northern Virginia, someone described Sun & Moon as a place where, instead of getting a sweat, it’s “all about the OM.” A bit about the sweat, just to be clear. Sweating is your body’s way of cooling itself down, and its composition is 99% water, 1% trace amounts of salt, sugar, urea, and ammonia. Meanwhile, the body releases toxins almost entirely via the liver (sending waste into the intestines), and the kidneys (sending waste into the urinary tract). So, if you’re sweating at a yoga studio where they turned up the heat and claimed they’re doing it so you release toxins, that studio has captured your attention via a clever but false marketing ploy. On the other hand, if you’re sweating because you did healthy exercise and your inner thermostat naturally rose, this is great news that your body is well-equipped to restore you to equilibrium. We are big fans of getting the body moving through healthy activities like brisk walks, team sports, and inspired visits to the gym or swimming pool. Sometimes we get the body warmed up and moving in yoga practice, and we love that too, as long as it’s done with good instruction and attention to safe alignment. But it can’t be said enough: yoga is more than exercise. And now, about the OM. A Sanskrit syllable sacred in Hindu and Buddhist tradition, OM is a root cousin of the Latin omni, and a root ancestor of amen. According to Georg Feuerstein, eminent Sanskrit scholar and author of The Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga, OM is the “sound of the soundless,” and provides a point of focus for the yogi seeking to “transcend the finite,” or find comfort in the truth of impermanence. From our perspective as a yoga studio celebrating 25 years of cultivating community and promoting healing and wellness, OM stands for each human’s potential to tap into loving presence when we take a moment to slow down, tune in, inhale, and exhale. We invite students onto the yoga mat to tease apart the knots that breed tension in the body, repair imbalances, and re-shape problematic movement patterns. Ease in the body leads to ease in the mind and heart, where we feel the resonance of peace, and perhaps the soft and faithful vibrations of sacred sound. The dichotomy between sweat and OM is one that yoga folks have been talking about for the last decade, since yoga’s popularity skyrocketed. Western-style commercialism and the external beauty ideal have left a strong imprint in the yoga industry. The fact that we’re even calling it an industry is a case in point, and the economics have produced a glut of supply in the face of wide-ranging demand. Some of that demand is for physically challenging exercise, for sure. Some of it is for the quiet stillness of meditation. And a lot of it encompasses both ends of the spectrum and everything in between. Regular folks are nursing all kinds of physical, mental, and spiritual wounds, and grasping for any and all ways to heal and stay healthy. They’re seeking the supportive company of others, the guidance of good teachers, the laughter and fun that happen when defenses come down, and the hallelujah of getting out from behind their devices. Sun & Moon is chock full of those regular folks, and we’re practicing, learning, laughing, and healing right alongside them. You bet your lululemon we’re all about the OM.

8 Weeks and 8 Ways to Build Community This Summer and Beyond Yoga is more than exercise. It’s connection. It’s peace. It’s strength. It’s love. More than anything, what we value most at Sun & Moon, beyond how we help individual students find health and well-being, is how individual students come together in our space to form community. As our dear friend and teacher Kira Sloane says, “Yoga happens in relationship.”

Sign up for Summer Bliss, our signature summer wellness program. With unlimited yoga plus your choice of two individual healing treatments in reflexology with Rixie Dennison, acupuncture with Shani Horne, and massage in Arlington, Falls Church, or Fairfax. We’re returned the price to an affordable $321, and we think you’ll find it well worth it when you land in September, rested and ready for the fall. Come on retreat. In July it’s the Mindful Unplug at Feathered Pipe Ranch in Helena, MT (recently ranked by Yoga Journal as the number one yoga destination!). We reduce our exposure to devices and enliven all five senses through meditative presence, gentle yoga movement w/Anne J, dharma talks w/Annie M, and restorative yoga w/Amir. Last week of August we head to Iceland with Annie & Amir leading daily yoga classes amidst the spectacular beauty of waterfalls, geysers, glaciers, and the legendary Blue Lagoon. Check out our partnership with Trade Roots. We’ve teamed up with local, independent shop owner Lisa Ostroff and her Westover gift store & cafe to sell fair trade accessories, home decor, and gifts. Check out the goodies in our studios, or visit Trade Roots at 5852 Washington Blvd. in Arlington.
Consider teacher training. Our Foundations program is for anyone seeking to deepen their practice and understanding of yoga, whether it’s to share with and teach it to others, or enhance one’s own experience of yoga’s depths. Our Dharma program is for anyone who completed any 200-hour program and seeks to refine and specialize the art, practice, and skill of teaching as they answer their individual yoga calling. Learn to find common ground through dialogue. Every quarter, Alex Levin & professional facilitator Aimee Hill gather to practice skillful communications in dialogue, enhance understanding, and exploring what separates us vs. what connects us. Each gathering focuses on a current controversial topic. All points of view are welcome.
Practice with the whole family. This summer we’ve added two special Saturday morning Family Yoga Fun classes in Arlington. Those littles are up early anyway, right?! Head over to the studio and throw in some some partner poses, some downward dogs, and some tall trees with small legs to get the weekend off to a great start. Look forward to fall with the return of Yoga for You & the Kids, and Family Yoga Fun Sundays in Fairfax, as well as kids & teen classes after school. Schedule a Yoga for Good fundraiser for the nonprofit of your choice. We’ll gift the teacher, the space, and the promotional material. You choose the cause (be it local, national, or global), gather your friends, and practice for yourself as well as others. These donations-only classes are a great way to breathe, stretch, and connect the practice to the greater good.
Learn the many ways to meditate, in the company of others. The Buddhist principle of sangha suggests that coming together in peace makes the individual path toward peace easier. In addition to several weekly meditation gatherings, try Yin, Insight Yoga, Meditative Movement, Yoga Nidra, and this summer’s special Breathwalk workshop in Potomac Overlook Park.

General Information & Fees Welcome to Sun & Moon Yoga We are a classic school of hatha yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment, which has shared the brilliance of yoga with many thousands of students since 1995. We keep our studios at a moderately comfortable room temperature, and provide careful instruction that favors safety and deep attention. We welcome beginners and new students at any time, and your first class is free. Three Ways to Yoga at Sun & Moon: 1. FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION Our classic “yoga school” option, we recommend this for those seeking to learn and study on a consistent basis with a primary teacher. This option provides excellent yoga education with a continuity of instruction and practice. Depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. Make up any missed classes in any other class on the current schedule, before or after your absence. Take all make-ups during the quarter for which you are registered; make-ups may not be carried forward. • $128 for 8 classes through August 29 • After quarter begins, registrations may pro-rate all remaining weeks @$16/class • Seniors 60 and up take $10 off total registration • Register for two weekly classes and take $50 off • Discounts during the first three weeks only; one discount per person
2. FLEX PASSES If you travel or your schedule is entirely unpredictable and it’s tough to commit to the entire quarter, or you like to mix up your experience and your teachers, we’re entirely flexible. These passes are good for six months for any class at any time. • $180 for ten • $120 for six • $22 for a single class drop-in
3. BLISS PASS For the yogis who want regular and frequent practice two or more times per week, and love coming to the many different class styles with our diverse teaching staff. Hassle-free enrollment – just sign up for monthly auto-renew to your credit card on our secure site, and show up whenever you like. • $135/month
YOGA ETIQUETTE AND WHAT TO WEAR Wear something comfy that’s not too loose and not too tight, and layer for temperature comfort. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. Changing rooms are available. Avoid perfume/ cologne or noisy jewelry. If you’re late to class, enter quietly and wait for centering to conclude before setting up props. Inform the teacher in advance if you need to leave early, and do not leave during final relaxation. Take your valuables into the room with you or secure them in your car. Cell phones should be silent and out of sight. Sun & Moon provides mats and other yoga props free of charge, as well as cleaning supplies if necessary. Those who are concerned about the hygiene of props are encouraged to bring their own. Sun & Moon reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be re-scheduled. Registered students may make up missed classes in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642 up to one hour before the start time of the next class.
REFUND AND CREDIT POLICIES AND TERMS Quarterly registered students: Please use discretion when requesting refunds or credits, as our teachers are compensated for your registration up front, and we offer a liberal make-up policy for missed classes.
