School Spotlight Award

Spotlight on Talent

Concept Hair’s first School Spotlight Award was a huge success. Here’s what happened… SCHOOL

Back in March this year we launched our new competition, The School Spotlight

Award, designed to uncover hairdressing talent within the secondary schools in the UK offering hairdressing on their curriculum.

We didn’t know what to expect when we opened the competition up for entries, but we were blown away by the number and standard of entries, with school learners across the UK creating some incredible looks on mannequin heads — all exploring the theme of Prom Night.

In May our panel of expert judges — Ruth Salt from Wella, Karoliina Saunders, representing the Fellowship for British Hairdressing and Paul Mills from VTCT — were hard-pressed to choose winners as the standard of work was exceptional.

If you are a secondary school student studying hairdressing and want to challenge yourself, you don’t have long to wait for the next School Spotlight Award — it will be open for entries in September 2021, with more categories to ensure we celebrate talent at all levels.

Visit concepthairmag.co.uk for all the details. We can’t wait to see your work. Speaking to Concept Hair about her win, Lillyanne said: “At first, I was speechless when I was announced as the winner, but then I was so proud of what I had accomplished. Getting this award means a lot to me, as I’m able to use this opportunity in my future career and have already gained a work placement for next year as a result of this award. It made me realise that I can be the hairdresser I want to be through hard work and lots of practise.”

Abigail was equally excited about her win. “Winning the competition has meant so much to me. I like the visual side of things, so being able to create a mood board based around my ideas and then bring them to life has really helped me push myself. I feel this will help me in my career path as it’s given me the confidence to try new things out and believe in my ideas.”
