CH: What toll is the summer likely to have had on clients’ hair?

MJ: Summertime is a hard time for hair - even if the sun is hidden behind clouds, damaging UV rays can still affect hair condition. Prolonged exposure to the sun can result in discolouration, dryness and brittle strands. Sun combined with chlorine is the worst thing for hair as it’s really drying and leaves hair parched.

CH: What in-salon treatments would you recommend to help restore health to the hair?

MJ: Backwash treatments such as Schwarzkopf Professional Fibre Clinix bonding system is ideal for all hair types. It restores the inside and outside of the hair for up to 60 days. Different boosters nourish and restore hair and, combined with a home haircare regime, will keep hair in tip-top condition.

CH: Any tips for clients on continuing the restorative effect at home?

MJ: Weekly deep conditioning masks are essential through the summer months and into the autumn, to get hair ready for the cooler months ahead. Booking in for in-salon treatments and regular hair trims is essential for keeping hair looking and feeling healthy.

“Weekly deep conditioning masks are essential.”

CH: As the colder autumn weather arrives, what advice would you offer clients on caring for their hair?

MM: As we’re leaving the summer months behind, it’s vital that you replenish moisture and shine lost in the heat and sunshine of summer. Autumn is also the ideal time to sit down with your client and talk about the best colours for their hair and skin tone, which may have changed over the summer months.

CH: What problems are clients likely to encounter with their hair during the autumn months?

MM: Our clients tend to see issues with dullness and slight frizz and we need to help them get it into good condition before the winter months. Central heating and heated tools cause dryness and frizziness in these months.

CH: What homecare regime would you recommend to clients in order to protect their hair and get it in top-notch health ready for winter?

MM: To remedy these problems we would recommend weekly intensive treatments in addition to using a suitable shampoo and conditioner as part of a regular normal hair routine. A prescribed haircare regime is essential for each client’s individual hair needs. In addition to this, the correct styling products, such as serums, oils and creams will reduce the static in the hair leaving it with the perfect finish. And of course, regular visits to the salon to maintain the health of your hair is essential. CH: What are some of the elements of British autumn and winter months that play havoc with hair?

JM: Definitely the awful drizzly weather — it’s not good for any hair type!!

CH: What can hairdressers do to help combat some of these aggressors?

JM: The Serie Expert 10 in 1 spray is a firm favourite with everyone as it’s got everything you possibly could need in one product, including hydration, antibreakage, anti-split ends and anti-frizz.

We also recommend our Pro Longer insalon treatment because everyone loves to grow their hair longer for the autumn/ winter months.

CH: What advice can hairdressers give to their clients on caring for their hair at home during the colder months?

JM: Definitely using the correct home care after having a colour service makes all the difference. When you spend a lot on your hair service you should really try and budget in home care too. This will ensure longevity for your style.

We recommend L’Oréal Serie Expert Liss Unlimited shampoo and the Liss Unlimited nourishing hair mask, which is great for anti-humidity, keeping the hair smooth and glossy while stopping frizz in its tracks.

CH: What would be your hero product for clients looking to care for their hair during the winter?

JM: Definitely the L’Oréal Professionnel Steampod. This straightener is a game changer! It smooths the hair with steam so it's kinder than regular straighteners, but it also keeps it smoother for longer.
