about me Hi there, my name is Sarah. I consider myself one third Texan, one third Arkansan, and one third Midwestern, which throughout my life has given me a deep love and appreciation of both rural and urban spaces. Fortunately for me, design has allowed me to blend together these contrasting styles and provided an opportunity to develop a rich passion for the way in which people, architecture, and nature come together. I have a Bachelor’s in Interior Design from the Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design at the University of Arkansas. While design is a major focus in my life, in my free time I like to channel my creativity into pottery, weaving, cross-stitching, and baking sourdough bread. Oh, and I have a rescue dog who thinks I’m pretty cool.

design theory At its best, design should be: helpful, beautiful, respectful, conscious, protective, and accessible. At the core of design lies the human interaction. Every line, measurement, and selection drawn by a designer affects lives, and I believe that we as designers have a responsibility to maintain and strengthen that connection. Design should protect the user and the environment, and be helpful to all it encounters. It should be beautifully crafted and beautifully conscious. Additionally, design should be accessible. Whatever other challenges a person faces - effective and accessible design should not be on the list. As designers we have a duty to provide helpful, beautiful, respectful, conscious, protective, and accessible design to all, and throughout my career I strive to take this call seriously.

executive offices PROJECT BRIEF This project is a renovation of the executive suites of a local Kansas City insurance company. The project includes an expansion to their current board room and a rearrangement of their offices. Given the expansion of the board room with the renovation, there will be a new feature ceiling+wall piece in the space. The other finishes are kept simple, with neutral carpeting and walls. Walnut paneling is used to tie the space together as a common theme throughout the executive suites. As a team member on this project I contributed to the design of the board room, the offices, the corridor and multiple other aspects of the design and finishes.

AN IDEA BROUGHT TO LIFE

Our clients came to us wanting an elevated conference room built to impress other clients and executives. Throughout the design process, I knew this striking ceiling and wall system would be a beautiful method to draw interest and create a strong focal point for the space. This design was also perfect for this project, because it is a highly effective strategy, that was able to be produced within our client’s budget. The images shown above are my initial sketch, the rendering created in design development, and a photo from the design almost completed.

During design development, it became clear that we had approximately 3 feet by 12 feet of space between offices that created an interesting opportunity for storage and dry erase space that could be utilized by both the CEO, and the assistant on the opposite J11 side of the wall.A500.1 Through several iterations, the plan above was developed with2' -storage 2' - 0" 2' - 0" 2' - 0" 0" 2' - 0" 2' - 0" space, dry erase boards, hanging clothes area - all enclosed in seamless walnut doors. 10' - 4"

performing arts center PROJECT BRIEF This project is a performing arts center lobby renovation for Kansas State University. The project includes an addition to the existing structure and a renovation of the existing interior lobby space. By adding space onto the building, we are able to utilize existing limestone walls as features throughout the space. The other finishes are kept simple and timeless, with dark terrazzo floors and walnut paneling. As a team member on this project I contributed to the design of the ticketing office, the concessions design, and multiple other aspects of the lobby.

fairway cottage PROJECT BRIEF Our client came to us after just purchasing a stunning cottage in a suburb of Kansas City called Fairway. The home style was very cozy cottage, and the client asked us to help her transform it to her dream Parisian pied-à-terre. We focused on keeping the core furniture pieces clean and bright, and using casegoods, tables, and decor to bring in the “found” look. With the client having a very specific style, along with the home’s unique architecture, this project was an excercise in merging furnishings style and architecture. As a member of the design team, I assisted in selections, palette, decor, and drawings for presentation.

the detroit 7 PROJECT BRIEF The Detroit 7 is a concept founded in the idea of gathering people together 7 days a week for multiple different uses under one roof. These activities include a hotel, a bowling lounge, a food hall, and housing. This is all done in a 100,000 sqft warehouse in the heart of the Eastern Market in Detroit. The design of the space embraces the existing character of the building and the area, while bringing in color and modern touches. The spaces are laid out to utilize fluidity and openness between each of the programs. The people of Detroit are strong, vibrant, and value their city. This project seeks to honor the city and it’s people by enhancing a great area with new unique activities and spaces.

grocery store PROJECT BRIEF This project focuses on finding a successful solution for an out-ofuse grocery store in Fayetteville, AR. By evaluating the food presence in Fayetteville and seeing where any gaps are, the conclusion was made that this program should reflect the most important needs: to provide, to engage, and to shop local. The building incorporates a cafe, a local grocery market, a demonstration kitchen, and a flexible event space that could be used for local artisans or vendors. Spatially, the design uses fruits and vegetables as inspiration, and emphasizes a pomegranate concept throughout the space.

re:fresh spa PROJECT BRIEF The Re:Fresh Spa is a spa concept within a resort casino in Mississippi. The design and concept is centered around the Tunica tribe in Mississippi. The Tunica were a people who moved often, directly down the Mississippi River. Because of that, the design of the spa utilizes the motif of the River throughout. Specifically focusing on two different aspects of a river: land/ stasis and water/movement. Each space is designed with that in mind, and should feel in every aspect down to the material selections - that you’re either on a movement path or in an area to stay and rest. This project was selected to represent the University of Arkansas as the Angelo Donghia Scholarship Nominee in 2018. SPRING 2018
