RATIONALE:

SUZANNE MOORE

BRIEF:

AUDIENCE:

Create the year book for Leeds college of Art BA(hons) course Interdisciplinary (art and design). The year book will include examples of all the graduating students from that course, and will also include information about the course itself from the lead tutor.

The audience for the year book will be predominantly the students and their families. Normally the audience would stretch to perspective students, but as this course is coming to an end it means that this is not the case for this year book. The audience will also be viewers of the end of year show and potential clients who may be interested in the students work.

CONTEXT/PURPOSE:

SUZANNE MOORE

PURPOSE:

CONTEXT:

The purpose of the year book is to showcase the students in a positive reflection that shows off the hard work that they have put in during their time at Leeds College of Art. It will act as a way of promoting the students and their work to potential clients / buyers of their work, and also as a way of celebrating them as a year group.

The year book will be available to pick up through out the end of year show. It will also be available to all students on the course to take as a way of commemorating their time on the course. It would also work as a gift that could be given to relatives of people on the course so they can also celebrate their loved one graduating.

CO-ORDINATE:

VISUALS:

With the input of the Interdisciplinary course, the concept of ‘Co-ordinates’ was created and translated into a visual product. Co-ordinates is a year book that not only celebrates each student’s individual work: it celebrates and promotes the connections that have been made throughout the course on the last three years.

To represent the visuals of ‘Co-ordinates’ and the connections that have been made on the course, we devised a system where we mapped each student as a co-ordinate in accordance to their name we then asked them to manually draw on who they have connected with on the course. By doing this it has allowed each person to have made their mark on the year book.

RESEARCH:

SUZANNE MOORE

LO-FI: For the year book we were limited as the only available format for us was a poster. From speaking to the course it was clear that a poster was not what they wanted to represent them as a year group, so we had to invent a format that would work both as a poster and as a book. From discussions it was decided that the visual aesthetic for the year book that they

appreciated most was a lo-fi newspaper style. We then took the two of these concepts researched into lo-fi publications to try and find a solution that solved all problems. From looking at the lo-fi publications it helped as we saw different ways of binding and folding that would in turn able us to develop the problem solving format that answers to all.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT:

SUZANNE MOORE

POSTER: WORKSHOP: The format that was devised worked by having eight posters that fold down from A2 to A4 put together and are then bound together using an elastic band. This format works both as poster and as a book. For the posters we wanted to again have work that is directly from interdisciplinary so we invited them as a year group to engage in a workshop and create posters

that will sit within the year book. Everyone divided into eight groups and they created eight posters in mediums that most suit them as a group. This worked well as we feel that by them creating the posters from a task we have set it means they have directly contributed to this year book making it further more about them as a year group.

Above is an example of one of the posters that was created from the workshop. The posters will at A2 size and will only be revealed if a person chooses to fold out the year book. The posters are available as an extra bonus/ commemoration / free piece of art work that people can put up on their walls . BRIEF ELEVEN

FINAL OUTCOME:

COVER: The year book cover will feature all the students placed as co-ordinates and all the lines that they have created connecting themselves to others. An outer cover has been used to house all the information such as course title , college name and full names of students so that all the information is concise and clear and does not obstruct the cover.

LAYOUT: The layout that we chose to use is very fluid whilst following a set of grid rules. We chose to use a fluid layout as it best represents the course as they are a group of individuals so we wanted to represent them that way by giving each of them their own layout. BRIEF ELEVEN

FINAL OUTCOME:

POSTERS: Above is how the poster and book layout will look when folded out from A4 to A2. On the back will be the layout of the book which will not make sense as it will be upside down etc but this will make it clear that the front of the poster is the other side which will feature the work from the workshop. This has worked really well as it is a chance to show off even more work.
