Celebrities have become such a powerful figure in today’s culture; they influence what is popular, fashionable, people’s opinions etc. If you ask someone who their idol is they quite often will say a celebrity, it has become almost to a point of worship. Create an exhibition that explores this subject

The audience for this brief would be those who have an interest in the celebrity culture of today. They may ore may not have an actual obsession with celebrities but are able to make a comment on it. This will be an exhibition so the person would have an interest in the arts. The audience will be both make and female age range 21 - 31

CONTEXT / PURPOSE:

PURPOSE:

CORN EXCHANGE

The purpose of this exhibition is to highlight how out of control celebrity obsession has got, whilst at the same time dealing with the subject in a humorous way. The exhibition will be to entertain and to inform those that ‘Celebrity Worship Syndrome’ is a thing that actually exists.

After recently going to Dialogue exhibition in the Corn exchange and seeing what fantastic spaces they have available I would propose that the context and location for the exhibition would be the corn exchange.

CONCEPT:

STAINED GLASS: A traditional way of depicting someone who is worshiped by many is thorough stained glass windows. Stained glass has been used for a very long time to illustrate religious figures who are worshiped. The Medium of stained glass is itself very beautiful and the connection to worship ties it in well to my exhibition which would be a 21st century depictation of worship.

CHURCH: I am in contact with a stained glass window artist Caryl Hallett who is very interested in collaborating on this exhibition if it gets the chance to become a reality. In an exhibition environment the stained glass would be very striking and would describe the concept of celebrity worship beautifully.

Continuing with the religious theme I have been looking into Church ephemera which is usual quite unique and recognisable as a product. I am going to emulate this aesthetic for Celebrity Worship as it will highlight the light hearted side to the exhibition and is also a relevant aesthetic to have for the concept. BRIEF SIXTEEN

Calligraphy is something that is used a lot in religious ephemera, so I felt it was appropriate to research into it and teach myself some calligraphic skills. Above are my early attempts. From experimenting with calligraphy I feel like I will be able to emulate the style of church ephemera more coherently.

As this is a proposed exhibition I have been researching into exhibition spaces and promotional goods for exhibitions. Seeing the many different ways exhibitions can be laid out is interesting as is shows there are lots of ways to use space.

As the concept for the printed ephemera is to emulate church collateral I have researched into the variety of styles and church themed printed good there are, so that I can pull of the look successfully.

From my research into Church ephemera it became clear that a lot of the items are grey scaled design printed on pastel coloured paper. Above is the range of pastel coloured paper that I will be using for my celebrity worship ephemera.

Another constant that I noticed from researching Church ephemera is that boarders feature heavily, especially the double boarder. As this double boarder is such a hit I shall use it in my own worship ephemera.

After playing with the calligraphy pen I eventually managed to achieve an alphabet that I could use in my designs. I feel that it successfully emulates the calligraphy well and will cause a double take when they read what it says and realise it is not to do with religion. BRIEF SIXTEEN

RESOLUTION: All the printed ephemera has successfully worked with the concept of a Celebrity worship exhibition. The concept is a light hearted humorous stance on a topic that is very of the 21st century generation.

FLYER: The flyer features information about the up coming exhibition in the style of a church flyer. It has been designed in a tongue and cheek style that will hopefully catch peoples attention. The image has been taken from an original church flyer which helps add to the authenticity of the look and concept. BRIEF SIXTEEN

EXHIBITION PROGRAMME:

HYMN BOOK:

The exhibition programme is in the style of a order of service, in side there is detailed information about the exhibitors. There is also a section for light hearted adverts which will mimic those you would find in the back of a church magazine.

Youtube is riddled with fan songs sung by devoted followers of One Direction, so part way through the exhibition there will be a hymn song session where the songs written by the devoted fans will be sung.

BEER TOKENS: At the exhibition there will be beer, wine and nibbles available for free. There will however be a donation basket where the congregation of the exhibition will be invited to part with their pocket change in donation envelopes. BRIEF SIXTEEN
