FOUNDERS’ LETTER

we are taking it across Canada! THERE HAS NEVER BEEN a more exciting time for Sporting Life and our customers! We have just opened our new Sherway Gardens location and it looks great! This store is the ‘look’ of our future expansion. Last year we opened stores in Markham and Ottawa. Next year we will open two stores – one in Calgary Alberta (with another in Calgary quickly to follow within the year), and one in Richmond Hill, Ontario. The pace is not slowing! We have stores in the planning stages for Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Edmonton and more in the GTA. When we first started Sporting Life 36 years ago we had some very simple goals. Great products, knowledgeable staff who are service oriented and passionateto create the best shopping experience. To do this we needed the very best people: an enthusiastic group of employees who could understand and share our customer’s passions for skiing and fitness with a curiosity to keep ahead of all the latest innovations and changes. We strove to offer customers a world class selection of equipment, outerwear and fashion. The brands and the models that they know from their own love of the sport but not necessarily available to themcertainly not in just one store in Toronto.

Lastly-a great store design to make it all come to “life”- Sporting Life! We have stayed true to those goals and business has grown. Today Sporting Life, an iconic Toronto retailer, is transitioning to an iconic “Canadian” retailer! Why? Because we believe there are a lot of Canadians who are as passionate about their ‘Sporting Life Style’, as our Toronto and Ottawa customers are. We hear, over and over from our suppliers, how Sporting Life is so uniquein the world! They are amazed by the mix of merchandise. The most sought after and exclusive names in skiwear to great luxury jackets and coats suitable for a night out at the film festival. Brands perfect for spending days ski touring on the side of a mountain on the Haute Route. Nowhere else in the world…this magazine is a window on that world. We hope you love it like we do. Warm Regards, Patti, Brian and David

hi d den messages snow·flake (noun): a single ice crystal, typically displaying delicate sixfold symmetry, that falls through the earth’s atmosphere.

Japanese scientist MASARU EMOTO’s claim may explain why snowflakes are different IS IT TRUE THAT NO TWO ARE ALIKE? Scientists in the 19th century analyzed thousands of snowflake photographs in an attempt to find an identical match, even though the likelihood is somewhere in the neighbourhood of one in a million trillion. But the real question ia what makes them different? For one theory, enter Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese author, researcher and entrepreneur, whose discovery about water’s structure in its frozen state changed most of what we didn’t know about water, adding another near-mystical quality to life’s most precious resource. His breakthrough in quantum physics found a connection between crystal patterns and vibrations of human speech, voice, music – and even thought. He claimed that ice crystals grow differently when the water that forms them is exposed to different thoughts, feelings and musical vibrations. Was the late Dr. Emoto unearthing a complicated relationship between human thought and the energy of the world? Dr. Emoto premised his study of water on the notion that thoughts and feelings affect physical reality. While at first this claim may be mind-numbing to comprehend, it is worth considering: Can our spoken words really change the composition of water? His technique involved using a microscope to visually capture the crystalline structure of water at the moment of freezing, showing what the crystals reveal when specific, concentrated thoughts or energy are directed toward them. His findings show that water from clear springs and water exposed to loving words showed brilliant and complex snowflake patterns. But polluted water, and water exposed to negative thoughts, formed incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colours. Thoughts of the destructive or negative kind formed crystals very different from those formed after being sent thoughts of love, appreciation and gratitude. Some theorists have claimed that Emoto’s research has resulted in a new awareness of how we can positively impact the earth and our personal health. Deep stuff indeed. The next time you’re looking up to the skies, tongue outstretched as you reach for a snowflake (we all do it), it might be worth a thought as to whether Dr. Emoto’s theory helps you understand these magical shapes that are unlike any other. blank canvas His snow art may only exist for a few moments, but SIMON BECK’s intricate and precise creations inspire HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE, art is often

polarizing – and creating art that will be accepted and celebrated by the masses is nearly impossible. But it is difficult not to appreciate the beauty and respect the precision required of Simon Beck’s stunning winter creations. Using only a compass and his own two feet, Beck has been intricately crafting unique mathematical drawings upon pristine, untouched snow in the French Alps for the better part of a decade. Educated as an engineer at Oxford University, Beck has spent most of his adult life working as a freelance orienteering mapmaker. He discovered his artistic undertaking by accident. “It all began as a bit of fun after skiing one day in 2004, when I felt too lethargic to hike up the local mountain,” Beck explained. “I took orienteering seriously in those days and used to go training when the ski lifts closed.” It was then that the idea occurred to him to draw on the beautiful, level virgin snow. His first attempt covered the frozen lake outside his apartment in the skiing village of Arc 2000. Inspiring fans around the world and even a clothing line, Beck wishes he had taken his art form seriously from that

first day. But, he said, “at the time, I had no digital camera, no Internet access and no snowshoes.” Lacking foresight and assistance, Beck had no idea what his experiment would look like when seen from nearby tall buildings or the chairlift. He also admits that his initial audiences were confused rather than impressed. “The people who worked in the resort regarded me as a fool who was going to get killed, likely sooner rather than later, by an avalanche or falling through the ice,” he said. Existing for only brief moments in time, the beauty of Beck’s creations is fleeting. Unlike artistic media like stone carvings, or even canvas paintings, that can stand the test of time when stored and treated properly, Beck’s masterpieces are threatened by unpredictable influences like wind, snow and sun that can obliterate his work in a matter of days – or even hours. Artists find inspiration in unique places, and every artist has a muse. Beck’s just happens to be snow, which creates many unique challenges. One misstep or miscalculation and the work will be ruined. After charting out an area and counting paces, each magnificent image can take up to 10 hours to create. Normally covering

an area of about 150 square metres, Beck’s intricate designs require him to walk as far as 40 kilometres in snowshoes, making the endeavour both mentally and physically taxing. As a general rule, it takes roughly three hours to cover the area of a soccer field, depending on snow conditions and the complexity of the design he happens to be creating. The process through which Beck conceives and creates his designs has not changed over time; he feels there is little to be gained from moving to more modern or sophisticated equipment, with the exception of the camera technology used to capture and share his work. “There is a backlog of designs I want to repeat in order to get photos with a highquality digital camera,” Beck confessed. His first book was published in 2014, and he hopes to publish a second, which may incorporate night shots and unique lighting techniques. Though he finds inspiration in many places, Beck says that fractal designs (a natural phenomenon or mathematical set that exhibits a repeating, predictable sequence) give the best results. When scouting locations, Beck looks for a frozen lake with vantage points from which to

When you have a blank piece of paper, you draw on it,” he says. “So drawing on a blank snowfall seemed like a natural thing to do. view the piece. Lac Marlou is the best of several suitable sites at Les Arcs, which is convenient, given that he happens to own a place there. Snow conditions provide additional variables, as depth and consistency can affect the quality of the design – and the toll on the body. “The best type of snow is soft powder about 20 centimetres deep with a hard surface underneath, so that it makes a good image without being too tiring to

walk through,” Beck said. Beck keeps things interesting by changing his designs using principles such as the Sierpinski triangle, a fixed set of small triangles that together create the overall shape of a larger equilateral triangle. In his opinion, the “cubase Koch snowflake” is the best design he has completed. It gets more requests for reproduction rights than any of his other works, which suits him just fine.

Beck doesn’t plan on slowing down. Instead, he plans to create larger scale projects that incorporate bigger designs and more people, which could be his biggest challenge, since he wants to retain creative control over his work. As for how he feels when one of the designs he has created fades or is covered up, Beck enthusiastically responds that fresh snow only provides a new opportunity for a fresh start. Good words to live by. SL

THE COOLEST PLACES – Milan, Helsinki, Munich, St-Moritz, Amsterdam, Montreal, Oslo, Copenhagen, Boston, Winnipeg – to name only a few cities where some of the world’s most beautiful, warm and stylish winter outerwear is born. Perhaps this is a true case of the proverb “necessity is the mother of invention”. As an Ontario based retailer, we know and experience all the challenges and extremes Mother Nature can conjure. Our winters are long and our customers want options in their outer-wardrobes. We have been purveyors of the world’s finest winter brands for more than 36 years and every year we get just as excited to bring to our customers the latest trends and styles from around the world. We strive to offer something for every customer’s varying needs and style - from comfort, functionality, waterproofness, warmth, and exclusivity. This year the focus of our team was coats – seeking out new styling, great tailoring, fabrics, and innovation. We viewed hundreds of brands and thousands of jackets and coats. The end result is a lovingly curated assortment of the best coats the world has to offer. Our process is a comprehensive one. We start out with a review of what our store staff has to say about what our customers are looking for. From there, we attempt to imagine each of our different customers, where they use the product, in and out of the car, on the hill, at the rink, or waiting for the bus as part of their city commute. We try to imagine all their needs and fill in the blanks from there. Many customers want variety but also double duty from their ski and outerwear, to buy something that is designed for sport but stylish enough for a night out. Customers driven by sport and performance enjoy our extensive selection of brands and high performance skiwear for the backcountry or groomed runs alike. Like building a custom home, some of our customers look for heritage, tradition and old world hand crafted workmanship while others are looking for unique one of a kind and appreciate the exclusivity of a brand sold in very few places. Finally, armed with the knowledge of what we were looking for to meet our customers’ needs, we travelled to the coolest cities in the world to find the luxury brands that provide warmth and exceptional styling. Understated or stand-out in a crowd, we have found what you are looking for. 54

designer brands We looked to all the coolest cities for luxury brands that provide warmth and exceptional styling.

THE NETHERLANDS

This will be our third season with Goldbergh. Founded in 2010 by former retailer Sandra Peet and fashion designer Lieke van den Berg, Goldbergh has grown into one of the most successful luxury brands we have added to our stores in years. Goldbergh offers a luxury sportswear collection for the active, yet fashionable woman. The styling is on trend and the fit is more relaxed. It’s also a favourite of the royal family and worn on the hill by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. This designer mix of sport and fashion is a must-see for women who ski.

ITALY

A company born along the rainy shores of Lake Maggiore, Italy in 1948, Herno is now led by the son of the founder, Claudio Marenzi. The Laminar collection is a collaboration with Gore-tex® that results in the perfect combination of rain and weather resistance with contemporary styling.

This world famous brand is known internationally for its combination of glamour and elegance. Renown for being both stylish and sophisticated since the brand was first created in 1978 by founder Gianni Versace.

Known as the land of fashion, our collection of Italian brands doesn’t end there. You can shop other amazing brands from Italy including Moncler’s Grenoble Collection, Giorgio Armani’s EA7 Sport line, Postcard and Peuterey to name a few.

NORWAY

This season KJUS has partnered with Swiss watchmaker Hublot to create a limited edition men’s coat that is as much a statement as its inspiration, the Big Bang watch. There are only 200 of these coats in the world and four can be purchased at Sporting Life. 55

AUSTRIA

Frauenschuh has a fit and style leading the new look of mountain chic. Ultraexclusive and understated is the look of this family-owned brand Frauenschuh from the mountains of Kitzbühel, Austria — a location known for the most famous ski race in the world where fans gather each January. Frauenschuh has developed a combination of classic materials such as leather and loden wool, and high-tech fabrics like softshell for its range of Alpine ski fashion. Frauenschuh trademarks are sporty styles with excellent fit and beautiful details. They work hand in hand in the development of some of the finest technical wools from Schoeller. The fit of the pants is legendary and the styling a must-see.

CANADA

There are many Canadian brands in our stores , this season we introduce Freed to our Sporting Life customer. Freed is a heritage brand created from the historic 93-year-old Canadian garment manufacturers Freed & Freed International Ltd., based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Today Freed stands as one of the few remaining Canadian, fourth generation, and family-run businesses in the garment industry. Some of the most special coats we have seen in many years, Freed’s mix of old world craftsmanship is designed with the most current and fashionable customers in mind.

SWITZERLAND

Jet Set, with its quirky celebrity style and lux mix of fabrics. Always inspiring colours and fresh thinking.

KRU, the product of whimsical and oh-so-creative designer Kurt Ulmer. Feminine and fun with hidden details and original designs.

GERMANY

Bogner Sport is arguably the most wellknown luxury ski brand on earth. Willy Bogner Jr., whose family founded the company he runs today, is famous for his work on “Her Majesty’s Secret Service” and “The Spy Who Loved Me” as cinematographer and director. His wife Sonya Bogner’s creativity and iconic designs inspire the collection even today. Bogner’s tailoring, finishing and fabrics are second to none.

Toni Sailer is the maker of beautiful and impeccably tailored coats and skiwear. The brand’s namesake, Toni, was the first person in history to win all three disciplines (Downhill, Slalom and Giant Slalom) at the young age of 20 during the 1965 Olympics in Cortina, Italy. He went on to become an actor and spent his entire life involved in sport. Thanks to craftsmanship and elaborate technical procedures, a new collection emerges each season that fulfills the highest requirements in functionality and comfort. It’s a perfect legacy honouring the founder’s great love of sport and fascinating personality. 57

TOP DOGS

The SWISS ALPINE is the ancestral home of some of the world’s best-loved dogs With impressive tales of daring deeds, avalanche rescue and that classic image of a brandy cask, the big dogs of Switzerland are the stuff of legend. The Bernese mountain dog and the Saint Bernard are the largest of the dogs bred in the Swiss alpine, and they’re the Swiss dogs most commonly found in Canadian homes. So, what’s the real backstory on these working dogs from the mountains of Europe who won their way into Canadian hearts – and homes?

1st CENTURY Invading Roman soldiers moving in to Switzerland bring large mastiff dogs to guard and drive their herds of animals. While it’s difficult to trace Swiss dogs’ ancestry precisely back 2,000 years, it’s believed the modern Swiss breeds carry the blood of the invaders’ working dogs. 68

11th CENTURY Travellers and pilgrims frequently fight extreme weather to make their way through Great Saint Bernard Pass (elevation: 2,469 metres), a treacherous route through the Alps on the pilgrimage from England to Rome. Monks of the Holy Order of the Great Saint Bernard Monastery found a hospice on the pass to offer protection and shelter. In the Swiss Midlands, herders and dairy farmers are developing large working dogs to guard their livestock and property and pull carts.

166Os Monks at the Great Saint Bernard Monastery bring large Swiss mountain dogs to the pass to work as watchdogs and to provide company and companionship. As dogs breed in the isolated pass, the “hospice dog” becomes

distinct from the farm dogs working in the Midlands.

175Os Hospice dogs begin rescuing lost travellers after monks discover they can smell out injured people buried in the snow. While the iconic image of a rescue Saint Bernard includes a brandy cask on the collar, this seems to have been wishful thinking by artists in this era. Rather than warming the injured soul with brandy, dogs would warm injured travellers with body heat.

EARLY 18OOs Not one of Napoleon’s soldiers is lost crossing Saint Bernard Pass, and the hospice dogs’ reputation for getting travellers safely through the snow begins to spread throughout Europe.

1816 -1818 Many hospice dogs are lost

over a couple of particularly harsh avalanche seasons. To save the species, the monks breed their remaining dogs with similar dogs from local valleys, and with Newfoundland dogs from Canada.

188Os The Swiss Kennel Club officially recognizes hospice dogs as Saint Bernards, which become the Swiss national dog.

underway to reintroduce the dogs to avalanche rescue training. In Canada, the Canadian Kennel Club registers almost 500 Saint Bernards every year, but the Bernese Mountain Dogs are by far the most popular of the Swiss alpine breeds. The Canadian Kennel Club ranks Berners the seventh-most popular dog breed in the country.

19O8 Albert Heim-Stinftung, a renowned Swiss geologist, alpine explorer and dog lover, advocates for breeding programs to ensure the survival of the Swiss mountain breeds, and helps establish the four different breeds of Swiss mountain dogs: the Bernese mountain dog, the greater Swiss mountain dog, the Appenzeller and the Entlebucher mountain dog.

SNOW DAYS

The big Swiss dogs found in North America are more likely to be found curled up in front of the fire than working the fields or rescuing lost souls. But many of the same qualities that made their ancestors critical in the Swiss alpine make them perfect pets – especially for those inclined to make their canine companions part of an active mountain lifestyle.

1939 - 1945 The Swiss army brings greater Swiss mountain dogs to war, using them to pull carts and cargo throughout World War II.

2OO5 - 2OO6 The Fondation Barry du Grand Saint Bernard takes over the original breeding kennel in Great Saint Bernard Pass. The foundation opens the Barryland – Musée et Chiens du Saint Bernard to highlight the dogs’ history and allow guests to see and visit with dogs descended from the original breeding stock. The foundation continues to breed an average of 20 pedigree puppies each year.

2O15 Saint Bernards are still bred at Great Bernard Pass, where visitors can hike with the dogs through the mountains. Efforts are

When Alyssa Pelletier and Will Hitchcock ditched their Silicon Valley jobs to live full time in a converted school bus so they could hike and ski across North America and blog about it at OutsideFound.com, they wanted a dog to join them on their adventure – and that dog had to meet a long list of requirements because of their unique lifestyle. “We wanted a pup that would be sturdy and energetic enough to keep up with our adventures in the mountains, both in the summer and winter,” Pelletier said. “She also needed to be able to hang out in our home (or road) office without bouncing off the walls.” They settled on Hilde, a now18-month-old Bernese mountain dog, who’s a fixture in their backcountry skiing adventures. “Hilde’s really into winter sports,” Pelletier said. Pelletier and Hitchcock discovered that many ski resorts allow dogs on the hills in the morning before

the lifts open, so they invested in alpine touring skis that allow them to get a run in with Hilde to start each day. “She has the time of her life,” Pelletier said. “She flies over the snow, she’s almost like a penguin, sliding down.” In the summer, Hilde comes along for backpacking trips, hiking up to 25 kilometre s a day while carrying her own pack of doggy gear. This winter, Pelletier and Hitchcock plan to add snowshoeing and cross-country skiing to their routine – with Hilde by their side. Their best tip for keeping a Berner happy in the deepest of snow? “Before we go out skiing in deep powder, we spray her whole underside down with PAM cooking spray to keep the snow from collecting. A quick wipedown with an old towel before we get back in the car and she’s good as new.” SL

kids can’t wait for winter

This is not only the title of our annual winter kick-off ski sale, but also the truth.

THERE IS A SIMPLE BEAUTY in watching kids get excited for winter. The unabashed excitement of watching the leaves turn, seeing their breath in the air and watching those first few snowflakes hit the ground is why our annual winter kick- off ski sale is aptly named “Kids Can’t Wait for Winter”. No one gets more excited about the magic of winter than children do. And rightfully so. There is no better way to spend the day with kids soaking in the magic of winter than skiing and snowboarding, sports where the whole family can enjoy a day on the slopes together. To make it easier, Sporting Life has the Junior Half Back Program where parents can return ski packages at the end of the season for a credit of 50% of the package value to use for equipment the following year. Your kids grow, but your sport budget doesn’t have to. 94
