Layer It And for days when it's so cold you think nothing will be warm enough, use it to layer under your "Gore-tex" shell.
outdoors. Shells, soft-shells and Insulayers can be used separately in light weather conditions or as an insulating layer under a 'hard shell' outer jacket during the most severe weather. Using multiple layers allows for flexibility to match the needs of each situation. Two thin layers can be warmer and lighter than one thick layer, as air gets trapped between layers creating thermal insulation.
Layering your clothing is particularly relevant in cold, variable climates like ours. Whether you’re trekking the tundra, ascending the summit or descending the couloir, decide what you intend to use the jacket for. If you want a jacket for alpine climbing, multipitch rock climbing or other backcountry travel, consider one of the lighter weight, sewn-through, and lightly compressible layers and layer it. We have a great assortment of shell jackets, soft-shell jackets, down coats, jackets, sweaters and insulayers for all-weather conditions.
Hood or no hood? Overall, hoods keep you warmer, especially in windy conditions. If you're looking for a down layer to keep you as warm as possible, get a hood. If you usually wear your jacket as a mid-layer, consider a non-hooded jacket which will layer easier under your chosen outer-wear.
Cool mornings or chilly nights call for either an Arc'teryx or Patagonia Down Sweater under your shell jacket or a "Thermoball" insulayer from The North Face. This synthetic alternative to down offers all the warmth of down while delivering a featherweight, superbly compressible warmth. The 100% polyester ripstop shell on a down "sweater" does more than look sharp; it is tear-resistant, snow-shedding and windproof.
These pieces are designed to create an overall layering system for the extreme outdoor enthusiasts and for anyone who simply wants to stay warm and dry while enjoying the great

The North Face
Summit Series
The “Summit Series” is the premier line within The North Face Brand. The collection is built without compromise — from the drawing board to final fabrication, and is designed as the strongest and lightest gear available. It’s designed specifically by athletes, made for athletes. While on their biggest expeditions, athletes provide the research and development team direct feedback that helps shape and perfect the product. The North Face athletes depend on Summit Series products to keep them warm, dry and safe in the most punishing weather on the planet. Ingrid Backstrom, an athlete ambassador for The North Face, spends her winters skiing down mountains and her summers hiking back up.
When she’s not skiing, Ingrid still stays outside as much a possible, running and biking to relax and keep fit. Ingrid is grateful for the opportunities that her sport brings her, especially getting to travel and ski with “amazing people around the world.” Ingrid works with TNF, testing their extreme sport line products and she shares her experiences and product feedback through The North Face Speaker Series events across the country. This fall, Sporting Life had the pleasure of hosting TNF’s first ever Speakers Series in Toronto. It was a great success, and we look forward to participating again in the coming seasons. 15
Whether you’re planning an expedition of your own, or simply need to stay warm and dry on a cold day, shop The North Face Summit Series at Sporting Life.
