Killing the Green Momentum It’s not hard to find evidence of a new green consciousness in the Inland Northwest. Exhibit ‘A’ is this fourth edition of the Go Green Directory. Our newest guide has more pages and more advertisers than ever before—and more listings. Over 500 hundred businesses and organizations are trying to spread the word about the sustainable goods and services they offer. But before I give you a laundry list of the terrific new green and sustainable developments in our region consider this; blink and it could all be gone. It’s happened before. I am a proud survivor of 1970s Spokane. I remember the honorable Mayor Ron Bair, in his khaki safari outfit giving Ted Nugent the Key to the City. I also remember the seventies version of the green movement in Spokane. Expo 74 was the first “Ecological” World’s Fair—an environmentally themed event. My mom used to buy me carob chips at the crunchy granola food co-op on Sunset highway. There was a great underground newspaper called the Spokane Natural. Long before Riverpark Square, at the current site of the Wells Fargo building, there was a downtown hippie mall called 2nd City with store after store of locally made goods. My dad worked at Bovay Engineers, which designed a number of solar power systems on commercial buildings around town. And it all faded away. Why? Could be one of many culprits. A recession. Ronald Reagan, Cheap oil. A stock market boom. The information age. The list could go on. If you had to pin me down on a culprit I would say that too many people stopped thinking farther than five years into the future. In a nutshell that’s what sustainability is; caring about what happens to our world long after we’re gone. Giving the kids a planet that doesn’t resemble a Mad Max movie. If you think the non-profit conservation groups, the green building suppliers, the local food options, or the recycling services will be here forever—no matter what—please think again. Blink and it could all be gone. Just like the seventies. (And I don’t blame Ted Nugent.) The biggest enemy now might be information overload. We need to be informed about what’s going on in our world, but when folks get so hammered by bad environmental news they can reach a point of oblivion. They just give up. They don’t feel their sustainability efforts will ever help anything anyways so they stop trying. The Go Green Directory is trying to build a modest bulwark against oblivion. We are standing on the shoulders of some great efforts that date back to the seventies and beyond. Thanks for picking us up. // Jon snyder P.S. As mentioned on the cover, Go Green Directory was recently honored by receiving a 2008 Spokane Peace Prize “Children of the Sun” award for local environmental efforts. It’s nice to be noticed. GOGREENDIRECTORY // FOOD HearthBread BakeHouse: Baking up Sustainability Have you ever found a bushel of wheat berries or a bag of freshly-ground flour among the green beans and cherries at your local farmer’s market? Not likely – most of the grain grown in our region is quickly sold to huge distributors and traders and eventually shipped overseas.
The folks at Spokane’s own wholesale bakers HearthBread BakeHouse are hoping to make it easier for consumers to connect with their local wheat farmers. By teaming up with Shepherd’s Grain, an alliance of progressive Columbia Plateau family farms, HearthBread is working to create a large scale sustainable network – a “farmer’s market” of sorts, for products that use wheat and other grains. “We want to build a sustainable food system in the Northwest from ‘farm to fork’,” says Larry Condon, vice president of sales for Hearthbread. “The common place that this direct connection from grower to consumer happens now it at local farmer’s markets – we want to do for wheat farmers what neighborhood produce markets have done for other local farmers.” Shepherd’s Grain is grown by a small group of family farmers dedicated to sustainable agriculture. The grains are produced according to direct-seed cropping systems, and are grown to meet the standards of the Food Alliance. The Food Alliance is working to ensure “Good Food For a Healthy Future” through third party certification of farmers who:
FOOD
• Reduce or Eliminate Pesticides • Conserve Soil and Water • Protect and Enhance Wildlife Habitat • Provide Safe and Fair Working Conditions.
6
HearthBread is committed to supporting the unique group Shepherd’s Grain farmers that as a whole cultivate approximately 200,000 acres in our region. Of the grain yielded from this acreage, only around half is used in sustainable products. HearthBread is working to improve that statistic. Together with the State of Washington and Lincoln County Economic Development Council, HearthBread is in the process of building a new bakery in Reardon that will also include a mill for grinding Shepherd’s Grain wheat into flour. Another way in which HearthBread is promoting sustainability in their operations is through their distribution of wholesale products. By consolidating the distribution of the different brands they carry, they can reduce the number of delivery trucks on the road, reduce petroleum use and greenhouse gas emissions. HearthBread BakeHouse also recycles everything possible in their North Spokane bakery – even the flour sacks. Interested in knowing more about how you can find products using Northwest-grown grain? Check out www. shepherdsgrain.com for more information on the farmers who are shifting production to sustainable methods of farming.

“Mother care for the child-bearing year.” Birth is a universal experience. It can be powerful, creative, disruptive, challenging...many cultures see it as a passing into womanhood. The fetus becomes a child, the woman a mother, the couple a family. Our choices determine the journey. Choose wisely. You should feel comfortable, educated, and safe. Homebirth specialist. New Green Technology Allows Cleaning Without Soaps or Chemicals
18
For five years now, Spokane area residents have enjoyed the benefits of local entrepreneur Jeremy McGee’s vision for bringing safe, non-toxic cleaning technology to the Inland Northwest. When he was only 22 years old, McGee started a zerorez® franchise because he knew it was the right way to clean and that natural living is the wave of the future. Now he has four full-time employees and his green business is booming. Using products certified by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), the zerorez® cleaning system is among the fastest growing cleaning systems in the country as families with infants, pets, asthma, and chemical sensitivities find zerorez’s® non-toxic cleaning approach a safe haven from the industrial chemicals used by most cleaners. Explains McGee, “zerorez’s approach to cleaning is the first significant advancement in carpet cleaning over the last 20 years. Taking soaps out of the equation actually gets carpets and fabrics cleaner, and with our Empowered Water they stay cleaner longer. What we do is simple science, and lab testing has shown our green approach cleans better.” The zerorez® Carpet and Living Surfaces Care received the Carpet and Rug Institute’s highest rating for truck mounted cleaning systems – and the Spokane franchise has a technician IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification). The Carpet and Rug Institute’s industry-wide testing ranked the zerorez® cleaning system at the top for truck mounted carpet cleaners based on soil extraction, carpet dry time and re-soiling. The residue left in carpets by most cleaning systems rapidly attract dirt, mat the carpet yarn, dull color and texture, and increase carpet wear and tear. “More importantly,” asks McGee, “how clean is your carpet if it is loaded with soap and chemicals? We take chemicals out of the equation and Spokane homes are cleaner as a result.” A high-alkaline fluid derived from water treated by a machine patented by Electric Aquagenics is used instead of harsh chemical. The treatment process creates Empowered Water™”, a Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) cleaning solution with powerful anti-microbial properties. “From its inception, zerorez® has been committed to the principles of Green Chemistry, long before Green Chemistry was a common place term. Our business revolves around marketing non-toxic product solutions that create completely safe living environments, covering living surfaces such as carpet and tile cleaning, air and water purification systems” said James Stone, zerorez® CEO. Offset Environmental Impacts with Buck-A-Block from Avista Avista Offers Buck-A-Block as an optional rate for customers choosing to support alternative energy. Each block covers the premium to purchase 300 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of new renewable energy like wind, biomass and geothermal. This cost is in addition to normal rates as the environmental offsets, or renewable energy credits for emission-free generation, cost more. Avista makes no profit on the Buck-A-Block program and it is voluntary for customers to subscribe.
To participate in this voluntary program, you simply tell us how many blocks you would like to purchase. Each block costs just one dollar per month and sign up is available online or by calling customer service. Currently thousands of Avista customers are subscribing for an average of 5 blocks or $5 a month. Even one or two dollars a month helps offset environmental impacts and supports new renewable energy development. In addition to offsetting impacts from your electrical usage, you can also purchase blocks to offset other emissions and impacts. One block a month is equivalent to the same amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is produced by driving 1,000 miles in a car. Energy Efficiency Incentives
Avista offers a number of incentives to encourage customers to choose high efficiency equipment and appliances and to take other energy saving measures around the home or business. Buying emission-free generation is just one way to reduce your carbon footprint, but reducing your energy usage can have a similar effect. In fact, the cleanest energy is energy that does not need to be generated. By choosing energy efficient equipment, appliances and lighting, as well as taking steps to reduce your overall energy use, you also reduce generation needs. After all, every little bit adds up. Just as we’re all connected by the same energy system, our energy saving efforts are too. As more and more join in, our resources go further—and that’s good for us and the environment. Cash incentives are available for both residential and commercial customers. For residential customers, if you are considering a new furnace, water heater or other home improvement project, consider choosing high-efficiency options. You can also use our online Home Energy Analyzer to find those hidden energysavers in your home and reduce your use. New construction incentives are also available. Visit our website for a list of current energy efficiency incentives. For commercial customers, Avista has many tools to help your business save energy and maximize your energy resources. Whether you’re planning a new building or upgrading an existing one, cash incentives are available for qualifying sitespecific and prescriptive measures. A team of energy efficiency experts work with you to help determine how your electric and/or natural gas process(es) could be more energy efficient. Contact your Avista account executive before beginning your next project. //

COMMUNITY TRANSPORTATION
The Spokane County Commute Trip Reduction program’s “Greenest Award” is presented to Susan Meyer, STA CEO (left) by Anne Irmer, STA Vanpool Supervisor
Spokane Transit Fuels Community’s Commitment to “Travel Green” Spokane Transit was recently honored for its outstanding employee effort in utilizing “green” commute alternatives. In April alone, STA employees trimmed 15,862 miles from their regular commutes, conserved $3,490 worth of fuel and prevented nearly 16,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the air. In total, 142 STA employees participated in the effort, including every department manager. The “Greenest Award” was presented to STA by the Spokane County Commute Trip Reduction program.
Susan Meyer, STA CEO, accepted the award on behalf of STA and all participating employees at a ceremony June 3, 2008. “The people of STA are committed to this agency’s role as a leader in the movement for environmental responsibility,” Meyer said. “We are also dedicated to taking whatever personal measures we can to insure we are doing our part to conserve energy, decrease traffic congestion and preserve our environment for future generations.” The community has climbed on board as well. Bus ridership has increased nearly 22% in the last two years, more than three times the national average. The trend continues with a 13.5% increase in ridership year-to-date through May 2008. Current reports also demonstrate a 14.5% increase in STA Vanpool participation year-to-date (April 2008). “The people of Spokane and the Inland Northwest are very motivated to ‘travel green,’” said Anne Irmer, STA Vanpool Supervisor. “Every environmentally-conscious commute choice makes a difference,” she said. “They all add up to create a cleaner, healthier community for everyone.” Research shows that sharing a ride to work as little as once a week can reduce the amount of carbon monoxide released into the air by 20%. People are taking note. STA Vanpool commuters eliminated 464,198 miles from being driven on area roads within just one month. Because every mile driven also releases an average of one pound of CO2 into the air, these commuters prevented close to a half million pounds of CO2 from being released during this same period. STA has taken great strides to reduce vehicle emissions as well. In 2008, the agency completed a project to retrofit new emission systems on 83 buses. The project, funded by a grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology, 38

reduces the particulate emissions from buses by 90%. Hybrid technology was also introduced into the STA fleet with the delivery of three 40-foot, Gillig diesel-electric hybrid buses in October 2007. Each of the hybrids, which were introduced earlier this year, will conserve 4,005 gallons of fuel over its service life, thus reducing CO2 emissions by 440 tons per vehicle. STA will acquire six more hybrid buses later this year. Convenience, service and amenities also fuel the public’s momentum to “travel green.” Spokane Transit currently operates 40 bus routes serving Spokane, Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Millwood, Medical Lake, Cheney and Airway Heights. Additionally, two shuttle routes serve downtown Spokane and area hospitals. STA operates 12 Park & Ride lots throughout the region and is currently reviewing potential sites for the construction of additional Park & Ride lots. The agency also offers express service to and from Liberty Lake, Cheney, Spokane Valley and North Spokane. The popular North Express, launched in January 2008, continues to attract commuters and exceed growth expectations. The success of the route, which travels from the Hastings Park & Ride to The Plaza in under 30 minutes, exemplifies the public’s desire for cost effective and convenient commute options. STA’s online Trip Planner is another amenity that makes it easier for people to choose public transportation. By simply entering an origin and destination into the Trip Planner even the not-so-savvy computer user can quickly view a variety of options to use in planning bus trips. Of course there are other environmentally-friendly modes of transportation available, and bicycling is one that is quickly gaining in popularity. In response to this growing trend, STA equipped nearly all of the fixed route buses with bicycle racks that accommodate two bikes. Most of the vans in the Vanpool program are also equipped with bike racks. STA provided a bike rack-equipped bus at Riverfront Park for the launch of the City of Spokane’s Bike to Work Week in May, 2008. Bicyclists were given instruction on bike loading and unloading maneuvers and took turns practicing the simple process themselves. A video demonstrating this procedure can be viewed on the STA web site. On May 20, 2008, 65% of voters in the Spokane County Public Transportation Benefit Area (PTBA) approved the continuation of STA’s existing sales tax funding. This overwhelming show of support for public transportation illustrates the community’s growing awareness of environmental issues and the role STA plays in assuring a healthy economy. The message is clear: Spokane Transit is, and will continue to be, “How a Great City Moves.” // For more information on the topics discussed in this article, visit www.spokanetransit.com, www.mycommute.org and www.biketoworkspokane.org. Ride the Wave of the Future The environment is everyone’s concern. That’s why we retrofitted 83 buses with new emission systems to reduce particulate emissions by 90%. It’s why we use hybrid buses on three of our most popular routes and plan to add six more to our fleet this year.
The future is now.
