FINDING THE RIGHT WORKOUT

BY

Beth Ann Mock For many of us, a new year brings new commitments to ourselves. At the top of the list is usually a pledge to get more exercise. Several fitness trends have sprung up in the past decade or so, but how do you decide which option will be most useful and enjoyable? From Zumba to Crossfit, we’ve created a rundown on the ups and downs of several options. so6ix.com | JANUARY 2013

PILATES Some people swear by Pilates and some get frustrated by what they see as a lack of definitive results. Pilates strengthens core muscles very well, improves overall strength and balance, and heightens flexibility. Pilates is a very useful program for physical rehabilitation. Pilates is not as effective at stimulating weight loss as running or swimming. If Pilates’ exercises are not performed precisely the way they are ZUMBA Zumba came on the scene in the 1990’s, becoming popular in the mid 2000’s. Some women find it easy to stick with because it’s a lot of fun. This form of exercise is heavy on interval training with fast and slow rhythmic changes, Zumba also incorporates resistance training. Fastpaced and easy to follow dance moves timed to

SUCCESS the gym in about 30 minutes. Crossfit raises metabolism and strengthens many different muscle groups simultaneously. This may not be the plan for beginners as it is very demanding. Someone who has not exercised regularly in quite some time will find this system overly intense. Risk of injury comes into play if you are not capable of Crossfit’s requirements or if you are not doing the exercises properly. Even someone who is in excellent shape can become injured by these exercises if not paying attention to proper form. This is a workout for those who are already regularly active.

WEIGHT LOSS BOOT CAMPS Modeled from military training, boot camps are done outside and in groups. These camps provide all-body progress: strength, endurance and weight training are included. Boot camps are perfect for improving agility and flexibility. Because you will be exercising in a group of about 20 people, you may not feel you’re getting the attentive personal instruction you would prefer to have. The ability to stick with it is more important in boot camps than any other program. You will be really sore for the first few days. Many boot camps meet early in the morning, so if you’re a night owl this is a factor you need to consider. 16

BY

Beth Ann Mock It is time once again to take note of all the things we’d like to change about ourselves in 2013. For a better chance at making successful changes, start small. Changing little by little is much less stressful. Change doesn’t have to be jarring and dramatic. Remember, every little bit helps, and small adjustments that are well done will lead to bigger and better changes in the future. so6ix.com | JANUARY 2013

DON’T KEEP MEDICINE IN THE MEDICINE CABINET Your medicine cabinet is the worst possible place to store your prescriptions. Why is this? The answer is simple: It’s in your bathroom. to normal. Instead of checking off lists of gifts for family members and friends, it is the list of things to accomplish in the upcoming New Year. Some people have one or two ideas for their New Year’s resolution. One of the most common resolutions everyone thinks about after the holidays is their health!

LEGGINGS Another item any gym member should have in their wardrobe is leggings. If you are used to wearing shorts to work out in, try a pair of The North Face leggings. They come in an array of colors and styles. These leggings are made for comfort with the cotton and spandex blend. The knee length style is a great pair of leggings for runners, yoga members and fast walkers. Wear the basic black and put your cardigan or hoodie pullover for a sporty look.

COCOON CARDIGAN There is never a moment in life when you cannot be stylish, even when you are working out. Starting the New Year back in the gym to shave off those holiday pounds can become sweaty and seem unstylish. To make your after workout look chic and stylish, just throw on a cocoon cardigan and head to your next destination. This cardigan is light weight, soft and can be dressed up for

S AT I R E

JANUARY 2013 BY

Dadhichi Toth

must exhibit a willingness to try new and different approaches to relationships.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18) When you raise your flag this month, you raise yourself with it. You’re right out there in view because it seems like the obvious thing to do to get what you want. You personally, and maybe financially, find it natural to “go public” and put yourself and your wares on display – not just for immediate gain but because you’re proud of what you’ve got, what you’ve done and who you are.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20) Eclectic tastes and a broad range of options are what you'd like to see coming up. You'll be happier savoring the many than limiting your options to the view, however intense. Perhaps it's that you don't want to miss anything, but the result is that you will have it all, so you can specialize later.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19) This month, as the New Year unfolds, it's time for discovering others. For finding yourself capable to respond to friends and lovers and enter into relationships with a renewed sense of love and compassion. Expect some breakthroughs, but you 42

so6ix.com | JANUARY 2013

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20) Details won't matter as much as getting to the truth of the matter this month. That's where your mind's headed. Feel free to be a little windy, speculate and philosophize, because you can't get things organized until you know what the overall plan is all about. Then you can flesh it out with details and applications.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20) Big feelings and a big heart are a key to the coming month. That may be to the point of overreaction in the best sense of the word. When something moves you, it lifts you right off your feet, and enthusiasm is not a sufficient word to describe your feelings. You can go a long way with it, if others can keep up with you.

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22) Discoveries are made by forcing the issue in this

S AT I R E

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19) Feelings will tend to find easy and creative expression this month, and the flow from inside to outside, from heart to head, proceeds easily and helpfully. Reaction timing is smooth, as emotions rise and flower into articulation that encourages further inner exploration, both by yourself and those you’re sharing with.

seven-year period. Breaks and discontinuities seem to come from out of the blue, even though they have been gestating for some time. Belief systems around you change radically at sudden shear points, revealing the obvious only after the fact, leaving the most aggressive in charge.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22) This should be one of the best periods for financial success and social advancements. Your feelings and emotions are aroused and will find a satisfactory outlet through present or new attachments. Should situations permit, this may be the time for engagements or marriage. Social functions, invitations and receiving of flowers or gifts are highlighted. You may also look forward to a prosperous time for finances or investments.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22) Focused energy and hitting the nail exactly on the head are a major work trend as the New Month commences. That means taking careful aim before you strike and then only using what you need to get the job done. Attention to detail requires that you avoid distraction or dilution of the power you deliver, when one shot is all it takes.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22) This month sees a renewal of blind justice with her sword. Those who have spent their time handing out self-made dictums of right and wrong will find themselves hoisted on their own petards, while the meek inherit their earth. If you've been minding your own business, tending to your tasks, you're safe.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21) Emotional blockage could be a problem this month. As feelings that would normally come out get delayed, then by circumstances simply get left behind. It can be all about timing, when hesitation means loss. Second thoughts can be a benefit, but third and fourth ones lead to paralysis. Say no twice, but not the third time.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21) Your intuition is sufficiently fine-tuned this month that you don’t particularly think about it but just play the hunch automatically, as if it weren’t one. There’s no way you’re going to be able to justify that, but you probably won’t be asked to, as no one, including yourself, will question the process. so6ix.com | JANUARY 2013

BRYNN MAYS Brynn Mays is the Director of Client Development for 7 Media Group in Oklahoma City. She has served with the company for three years. 7 Media Group provides mobile marketing services for several categories of businesses such as restaurants, non-profits, boutiques and many others. The services offered help create a more effective and efficient way for businesses to communicate with a targeted audience. While mobile marketing is still a relatively new concept, Mays enjoys staying on top of new and creative trends within the field for the benefit of her clients.  7 Media Group services do not take the place of traditional marketing but serve to complement and expand the reach of a company’s message. Mays joined the company in August 2010 and quickly discovered a field she is passionate about. She brings 10 years of combined customer service and marketing experience to the company. She enjoys working closely with clients, understanding their audience and figuring out how mobile marketing can be incorporated into their current marketing strategy. Powersports dealerships have become a large portion of her clientele recently. Through these relationships, she has learned to understand the unique needs of dealerships across the country. Although it is difficult, this has been both educational and beneficial in providing great marketing experience. Mays is preparing to pursue her Master’s Degree in Business at the University of Central Oklahoma College of Business. Outside of work she enjoys traveling, spending time at the lake and being with her family. For more information about mobile marketing contact Mays at 405-633-1816. 60

SCOTT DO Scott Do is a personal trainer and owner of Do It Rite Fitness. Beyond being a personal trainer, Scott is a life changer; transforming his clients' bodies and health through cardio goalsetting, inspirational coaching and proper food education. Scott keeps his clients motivated through his passion and dedication to helping them better their bodies, one day at a time. His passion is contagious. There is a camaraderie in his gym, as everyone works toward a common goal, encouraging one another. Scott began his journey to becoming a bodybuilder and personal trainer 12 years ago with a dream and a vision for his future. He was too small for most sports as a teenager and was often teased for his stature compared to most of the athletes in his high school. Scott started training, dieting and teaching himself how to get quality results in the gym. After years of building his physique, understanding of fitness and boosting his confidence to new levels, Scott opened the doors to Do It Rite Fitness in 2011. Scott has helped many people in the Oklahoma City community lose weight, often in just three months. He has helped them obtain better health through nutrition and lifestyle changes that ensure they can keep that weight off. He has trained a variety of clients from individuals trying to achieve their own personal goals to pro athletes that are trying to take themselves to the next level. so6ix.com | JANUARY 2013
