Angelique Christina Stoney LaRue: Photography By: By:www.stoneylarue.com

Just a Regular Guy In a music industry filled with AutoTune assisted superstars, it is refreshing to find an artist that is touted for his soulful live performances. Stoney LaRue is a downhome boy turned Red Dirt Music legend whose passion for his craft, life, and his fans shine through in every last one of his songs. While this masterful lyricist is living his dream and has an insanely dedicated following, the thing that sets LaRue apart from many other artists is his down to earth nature and an incredible sense of humility. One of the many things about LaRue that attracts such a loyal fan base is his uncanny ability to share something with people that everyone can relate to in some way. Hits such as “Downtown” and “Love You for Loving Me”, allow listeners to connect with him in a way that only a trusted old friend can. LaRue says, “I haven’t written a song that isn’t a reflection of at least a part of my personality or a reflection of who I am. I also try to find other people’s perspectives too, so that they can relate. I don’t think that my reality is a reflection of everyone else’s.” When asked if he could tell his fans one thing they don’t know about him, LaRue’s simple response was, “Even though I don’t remember your name, I enjoyed meeting you.” While some might scoff and label his response as simply being Southern charm, others would disagree with the understanding that he truly appreciates each and every fan. LaRue credits his moving live performance abilities to the energy that

10 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

he gains from his audience. His desire for his fans at every show is to make the cares of the world disappear for at least the time that they are there with him. In an industry full of ups and downs and constant rejection, LaRue doesn’t allow himself to fall victim to the pitfalls of negativity. He spends time alone daily training himself to be positive. He says, “I live by the mantra of you can’t do anything about the past, and you can’t live in the future, so concentrate on the present time.” He is also a firm believer in envisioning what you want out of life and it will happen. LaRue has always envisioned traveling the world and making music and now it’s his reality. So who are we to debate on whether it works for him or not? With thirteen years in the music business under his belt, Stoney LaRue still feels those “wide-eyed” moments of awe when playing with other artists. He says, “Playing with Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Lee Ann Womack were all amazing. I was even blown away when I recently played with my buddy who just got a record deal.” One might question how a guy that has played with such greats and experienced so many things in his career can still manage to be so humble. In addition to his fans, LaRue directly attributes his ability to remain grounded to his wife of ten years, Kandace. He states, “She’s an incredible wife and mother. She deserves so much and someone a whole lot better than me.” He gives her complete credit for the balance that he is able to maintain with life and his career. LaRue has a lot to look forward to in the next few months with a new album dropping in August and the remainder of an exciting tour to complete. If you aren’t a fan already, check out a show or even just listen to a few of his songs. I can guarantee that you will not be sorry! Not only have I been won over by his music, but he’s got a brand new fan for being just a regular humble guy.

Physical Health Equals Confidence

Confidence is an essential asset in relationships, both romantic and social. Have you ever had that feeling that you aren’t good enough or that you are worthless or just invaluable? These thoughts are related to your confidence as a person, in who you are. There are many parts that contribute to an individual’s confidence in themselves, and physical fitness is one key to unlocking that confidence. Your physicality is a huge booster in this area of self worth. When you feel good about yourself, it allows you to feel like you can do anything, whether it be approaching a member of the opposite sex, being confident in business dealings, standing up for yourself, or any other kind of social interactions. Since we are on the topic of relationships in this article, let’s take a look at how being physically healthy can help you gain confidence in this area. For the single people, physical attractiveness is a huge factor. It is what draws us to one another. People looking for love and wanting a future mate, and we all have criteria we are looking for in a potential mate. One universal

Thebigpicture

criteria we all look for as biological creatures is one of reproducing. This goes along with Darwin’s theory of “Survival of the Fittest,” which says that only the strong and able will survive and further the species. When it comes to choosing a mate, we look for physical strength and beautiful appearance, ones that look as though they have good genes. This is an instinctive quality in all God’s creatures, we were genetically programmed that way. So keeping yourself physically fit and healthy is important in finding your potential mate. But not only is it attractive to others, but it also makes you more capable as a person. Have you ever noticed how people who are physically fit and healthy tend to be more confident in their abilities and in who they are, even some that are overly arrogant? Well, I’m not saying you should keep yourself healthy to be arrogant or prideful, but self-confidence is definitely a crucial quality to have. When you are fit and healthy, you are confident in yourself and you will be amazed as to what opportunities you will open yourself up

Continued from Page 13 - Dr. Tru Luv: Physical Health Equals Confidence to, romantically, personally, and socially. But what about those who are already in a relationship, where the tendency is to just “let yourself go” because there is no one to impress anymore? If you are involved in a relationship and you believe there is no one to impress anymore, then you are blind and ignorant. What about the one you are with? Is he or she not worth impressing anymore? I definitely would hope they are, in fact, I believe they should be more worth impressing than if you were still single and trying to impress. I believe this is true because this is someone that you already care a great deal about, possibly even love! I don’t know about you, but I desperately want the ones I love most to be impressed with who I am, especially my significant other. Being fit and healthy in a relationship will help keep the passion and the mystery alive. You both will still have a strong desire to impress and go beyond because they are

still so mysterious to you. Being fit and healthy will give you the confidence to do this, knowing that your significant other is so mysterious and impressive and you still have to win them over, even in the relationship! So what applications can we draw from this? For those who are single it’s simple, keep fit, work, out, eat healthy, get rid of unhealthy habits, and be confident. For those who are already in a relationship, make it something you can do together. Get a membership to a gym and work out together, take yoga, dancing, or aerobics classes together, diet and cook healthy meals together, pick up healthy activities or hobbies together including sports, walks, exercise, classes, or anything that will keep you fit. Not only will this boost your personal confidence, but it will increase your confidence in each other and will strengthen the bond of the relationship and keep the passion alive! Don’t “let yourself go.”

3. MESA VERDE, COLORADO See how the Puebloans evolved from roaming tribes of hunter-gatherers to a culture of art and architecture. Guided tours begin in comfortable coaches and lope through the Chapin Mesa. You can walk right into cliff dwellings and see artifacts that bring these ancient Native Americans back to life in your imagination. The Morefield Campground lies in a breathtaking canyon about four miles from the entrance of the park. Also inside the park is the aptly named Far View Lodge: views of four states can be seen from its balconies. Disney Family Fun Magazine recently featured Mesa Verde as one of the country’s best parks for families. Several tours, generally four hours long, are guided by park rangers and highlight the earliest archeological sites. The Cliff Palace alone contains 150 rooms and is rich with kivas, ancient rooms reserved for religious rituals. This park strives to preserve its valuable sites for future generations and share the history of the Ancestral Puebloans.

2. HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS Nestled in the Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs harkens back to a gentler time. Rest your head at The Park hotel where

Entertainment

So6ixEntertainment Harry Truman stayed and you’ll be right next to the gorgeous hiking trails. Lovingly preserved Bathhouse Row offers massage and bathing packages that pamper in Old South style. Hot Springs was the nation’s first federally protected area in the park system. For centuries it served as a neutral zone where members of all Native American tribes could come to bathe in peace with one another. Its healing thermal waters and preservation of ritual made this a medicinal pilgrimage prior to the advent of modern medicine. With its vibrant architecture, a visit to Hot Springs is like walking around in a postcard and the promenades and trails of the Ouachita range are perfect for those who want to stroll leisurely as well as outdoor enthusiasts.

1. INNER HARBOR, BALTIMORE This is a historic wonderland both night and day. Dotted with sites of the Civil War and the first Continental Congress, all the diverse beauty Baltimore has to offer can be found within a few blocks of the waterfront. See an intricate, life-sized model of a Humpback whale, visit a coral reef, and learn about the health of our oceans at Maryland’s number one tourist attraction, the National Aquarium. The Maryland Science Center, long ago a meeting place for amateur scientists, is one of the oldest scientific institutions in America. It now boasts a massive planetarium with a three dimensional IMAX theater. Don’t miss the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, the only interactive black history museum of its kind. Water taxis and cruises of the harbor are available at all hours and the streets are full of five star local fare.

Summer fun...

By: Jacqueline larocco

on a budget

When summer hits, many Oklahomans take advantage of school being out to jet off on yearly vacations. This country provides great opportunities for wonderful vacations, whether it’s skiing in Nevada, surfing in California, or visiting big cities like New York or Chicago. Or what about the lucky few who get to travel out of country—Europe anyone? However, most Oklahomans don’t have the means, time, or finances to take such vacations. But not to worry! Whether you’re trying to plan a family vacation, a group-friend outing, or you’re looking to get away with that special person, Oklahoma and its surrounding areas have the perfect spots for having a great time. For families, the Dinosaur Valley State park is located just south of the Oklahoma border in Glen Rose, Texas. The kids will love this one! Not only does the park come equipped with 70-foot models of dinosaurs, real fossils, and some of the best-preserved dinosaur tracks in the world, but the park also provides fun activities for kids and families. Camping and picnicking are available, and hiking and mountain biking are offered for the more adventurous ones. Dad can go fishing in

20 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

the morning, and then the family can go swimming in the river in the afternoons. This is not your average park. You could stay a little closer to home and visit the Chisholm Trail museum. This museum provides a great educational experience that is both fun and captivating. For the kids, activities such as making your own brand, riding a “bucking bronco,” and learning to rope a steer will keep them busy for hours. For mom and dad, paintings and sculptures in the Garis Gallery of the American West are sure to please. The museum also provides selfguided audio tours. Camping is one of the most popular choices for young adult groups looking for a fun time. It provides an open atmosphere and keeps out the distractions of television and electronics. Whether you’re taking a senior trip to mark the end of school or gathering with old friends again, camping is fun for everyone. The great thing is, Oklahoma provides many places for this. Lake Tenkiller on the Illinois River is one of the best spots for camping. It not only provides cabins for those who lack the

desire to sleep directly under the stars, there is also some of the best water rafting in the state! Float trips down the river range from rafting, canoeing, kayaking, or tubing. You don’t have to be an experienced rafter either. They provide everything you need, even if it is your first trip down the river. The river is so nice in some places you’ll even see people swimming. The best part about the Illinois River is that it is huge, meaning there are a lot of choices for resorts, cabins, and camping grounds. Different areas cater to different groups (families, friends, spouses, etc.), so check out as many as you can before deciding on one. One of the best places in Oklahoma that provides everything for everyone is perhaps the Quartz Mountain Fun Park. The name says it all. For families, it provides great activities for kids such as bumper cars, a water slide, and a Tilt-a-Whirl. Parents will like it because it’s not expensive, and a little money at the Quartz Mountain Fun Park will go a long way. Aside from the Fun Park, Quartz Mountain provides things for adults as well. Hiking, boating, and golfing are just a few of the many activities in the area. There is even an Off-Road Vehicle Park for the more daring ones who enjoy ATV and motorcycle riding. Oklahoma provides so many activities it would be hard to even cover the tip of the iceberg. So before you start thinking about traveling far out of state, stop and take some time to look over what you can do right here at home. In today’s economy, it helps to have these resources within driving range. So pack up the car and have a blast. Divorce...

By: john graves

Advice for Couples Dealing with Divorce Divorce can be a painful experience— emotionally and financially. Fortunately, folks who understand the functions and limitations of the system in this area of the law can ease the pain and avoid unnecessary delays and expense. Oklahoma’s divorce system is based on the principle “no fault”, meaning that if either party believes the marriage is over, a divorce will be granted. A divorce consists of at least one of four major issues: child custody/visitation, child support, alimony, and a division of property and debts. Understanding each of these unique aspects is vitally important, as they are crucial to your case. Every divorce is different; everyone’s personal situation is different. There is no “one size fits all” solution for separating couples. Consulting an attorney and financial advisor, if appropriate, should occur early on. In most instances, courts award joint custody of children. Joint custody means that parents will share parental responsibility for their children and participate jointly in making decisions that relate to the kids. It also means that former spouses must effectively communicate with each other, at least regarding the kids. If the parents are unable to maintain communication, or if one parent is unfit to exercise custody, the court may grant one parent sole custody and grant visitation to the other. In most custody disputes, a court will assign a mediator to the case, an unbiased third party, who can assist both parties in reaching an agreement that is best suited for the children. It may also be appropriate for the court to appoint a guardian ad litem, an independent lawyer representing the children’s best interest that investigates and makes a report and recommendation to the court. Both parents are required to support their children. In Oklahoma, child support is based upon a calculation involving your income, your spouse’s income, and the needs of your children under the guidelines established by your state. Credits can be given for things like insurance payments on behalf of the children and

Thebigpicture

servicing marital debts. Child support can be increased for day care, extraordinary medical care, etc. Alimony will only be rewarded after a review of one party’s need and the other party’s ability to pay. Both of these factors must be proven in court. Under Oklahoma law, the court must make “equitable distribution” of marital property and debts. Many factors, including child support, custody, and alimony awards, may cause the court to make an unequal, but otherwise equitable, division of property. Many times a spouse that may have received substantial property receives less because the assets of the marriage are offset by significant debts that the other party must pay. There are many moving parts to these calculations and this one area where it is particularly important to consult with qualified counsel to assure a positive outcome. Attorney fees can be a significant issue. Depending upon the financial condition of the parties, the court can order one party to pay some or all of the other’s attorney’s fees. This does not happen in all cases; it is determined on if one party has a greater ability to pay than the other. It is important to remember this issue when trying to decide whether to accept or reject settlement attempts. It doesn’t do any good to spend $1,000.00 in attorney fees trying to resolve a dispute over property worth $1,000.00. From my experience, here are a couple of “do’s” and “don’ts”: Have reasonable expectations of your case. If there are kids involved, keep communication open with the other side. Seek professional help to deal with your emotions. If necessary, let kids be kids, and keep them out of the divorce. Think long term, and listen to the professionals in which you place your confidence. John H. Graves is an attorney practicing in South Oklahoma City and the owner of The Law Office of John H. Graves, PLLC. Everyone’s situation is different. This article should not be relied upon for legal advice for your situation; always consult qualified counsel. No attorney client relationship ever exists until there is a signed engagement letter. See Ad on Page 21.

Job Board Tricks

Increase Your Odds with Candidate Job Board Tricks space, dates, and quantitative numbers on your resume. Avoid spelling errors, unprofessional email addresses, and a format that is not easily skimmed and no more than 2 pages. 4. Update Your Profile Weekly. Job boards list resumes by most recently updated and allow recruiters to use search by resumes updated daily, weekly, and monthly. Keep your resume at the top of the pack by updating it weekly. You can also take advantage of CareerBuilder’s advantage option which automatically provides you this service but at a fee.

Major job boards like CareerBuilder and Monster are one of the most popular ways for companies to develop a candidate pool when looking to fill an open position. CareerBuilder alone boasts 2 million unique users per month according to a report by Cnet News last year. With unemployment at its highest since 1982 and candidate competition increasing, how does a candidate stand out from the virtual pack when posting a resume on a major job board? 1. Your Resume Title. First impressions are important and the title of your resume will determine whether your resume gets a first look. Include action words in the title that best describe your experience and are different from the norm. An example would be a Certified AMX Audio Visual Professional. 2. Include an Objective in Your Online & Resume Profile. An objective describes what career opportunity as well as industry you are interested in learning more about. Recruiters spend roughly 10 seconds or less per resume. Keep your objective simple, direct and to the point. For example, Seasoned and Certified Human Resource Director interested in opportunity within the non-profit industry. Limit your objective to 1-2 sentences. 3. Resume Format. Include bullets, open

Thebigpicture

5. Use Searchable Buzzwords & Keyword Terms. Recruiters resume mine for qualified candidates also by keyword search. Include terms relevant to the industry or job you are interested in. Include any specialized certifications and their abbreviations as well as other specific qualifications to increase your exposure. 6. Include Your Contact Information. Recruiters do not have the time or patience to contact a candidate that uses an anonymous resume on a job board. Increase your exposure odds by including your contact information, including email and phone numbers. Monster has a feature called, Privacy Plus that allows users to block up to 20 companies from viewing your resume. Horoscopes

Horoscopes July 2011 Aries An important transit of Mercury after the 20th requires you to rethink some of your workplace practices. Mercury is very analytical; therefore, you will be rethinking some of your attitudes and processes. This is a great thing because it will make you more efficient, which in turn will free you up to do more fun things. Incidentally, this efficiency will sit well with your employers. You can be more productive as a result. Taurus You’re thinking more deeply about how you can make yourself happy in life, and this will be difficult because of the continuing influence of Saturn on your life. You can come to an understanding after the 3rd, when the Sun produces a challenging aspect to Saturn, and it could be that you finally start to accept where you are, rather than resisting it. The Buddha once said that the source of pain and suffering is resistance itself. Let go, accept where you are, and work with the tools and the skills at your disposal. Gemini You’ll be feeling warm and fuzzy in your relationships after the 9th as Venus and Jupiter lend you emotional support. You will, however, experience a few little glitches in your communications and intimacy between the 13th and 19th. At this time it is probably better to spend time alone rather than forcing the hand of someone who is not as amenable to your advances as you would like them to be. Using silence can help them develop more respect and honor for you. Cancer The Sun emblazons your work zone and professional esteem after the 13th, even though you may be landed with some ad-

Thebigpicture

ditional responsibilities that may be a little distasteful. By taking these extra tasks in your stride, you’ll prove to others you’re capable of dealing with the difficult as well as the easy. This is the mark of leadership and precedes some notable new opportunities for you. Don’t be afraid to step up to the plate and assume the responsibility, which will come with added benefits.

Leo This month Venus enters your Sun sign. What a stroke of luck! Venus is all attractive and promises a wonderful new makeover, new hairstyle, fashion, fabrics, and other items of luxury that can be used to beautify and enhance your personality. I’ve noted that some people under this transit, particularly if Mars is involved, might want to engage in some cosmetic surgery to enhance their facial features. In any case, after the 15th you’ll be feeling as if you are on show; present yourself in the best possible light. Virgo You mustn’t discard those who have been loyal to you; however, there is an indication that Mercury and Uranus will cause you to act erratically between the 5th and the 9th. By all means foster new friendships, but don’t do so at the expense at those who have been loyal and supportive of you in the past. You may find that some of the new friendships you make may not be all that enduring. Libra The solar eclipse which occurs on the 11th has deep and lasting ramifications for your professional life. Remember that with the power you achieve now, additional responsibilities will also need to be shouldered, so try to educate yourself and associate with others who are prepared to deal

Hold your head up, and don’t be drawn into petty arguments. Scorpio Hope. You’ll want to continue exercising your strong physical drive this month through taking on some new exercise regimes, challenging physical activity, or an outdoor hobby. With Mars transiting the precarious zone of your horoscope, take every precaution necessary to avoid mishaps. This may also be telling upon your lack of self-care, hygiene, or general wellbeing. Sleep more, take your vitamins, and don’t take on too much work. Sagittarius Venus is on the warpath between the 8th and the 11th. It has aspects to Uranus, Pluto, and Jupiter. A sudden turn in affairs could be caused by some problems over money or debts. It’s always a bad idea to mix friendships with finances, or business with pleasure. Venus and Jupiter in friendly aspect can help resolve this problem. Mars, as usual, is steamy and impulsive after the 13th and may adversely affect your Sun sign. You must slow your pace, think carefully about your plans, and don’t do too much.

Aquarius A full moon occurs on the 15th and fortunately for you this takes place in a zone of your horoscope indicating recuperation. It appears that you will listen to your body’s signals and take the time to treat yourself, pamper yourself. Take some time out. This is also a period where, even if you do associate with friends, you’ll want to try out some new social scenes and prospects that are out of the ordinary. New and interesting people, possibly even foreigners, will have a part to play in your life during this phase. Pisces The full Moon on the 15th occurs in Capricorn and highlights your interest and financial stability and security. You may need to sacrifice aspects of your life at this time to solidify your bank balance and to feel confident that your future financial opportunities are not going to be jeopardised. Saving hard will be a key aspect of this cycle. Between the 23rd and the 27th when the Sun enters your 6th zone of health and work practices, you may need to redefine what’s important in your life.

Capricorn On the 9th the planet Venus and Pluto enter into a rather complex tangle, which could mean you are not able to resolve some aspect of love. After the 10th you have to do some investigative work and this will predominantly relate to finance, money, facts and figures. However, It could also have something to do with a deeper understanding of a relationship. This may have to do with issues of jealousy, possessiveness and other negative emotions that impact poorly on your long-term prospects for a happy relationship.

Linebacker Legs

By: Dr. Harvey Jenkins

Avoiding Furry Linebacker Legs on the Beach this Summer

Many women are cursed with legs more furry than the average linebacker. Some men get ‘ingrown” hairs. Others have ear hair or back hair. Only the lucky ones of us are blessed to have hair exactly in the places we wanted and none in the places we don’t. The majority of us pluck, shave, or trim this hair, others use waxing, sugaring or even harsh chemicals to rid ourselves of these nuisances. Few of us realize that there is a relatively new, convenient and simple way to manage the problem of unwanted body hair. The way is GentleLASE, Laser Hair Removal and it is now available in OKC, just in time for the this summer! How It Works: A laser is a highly focused and filtered energetic beam of light. The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis. Lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating dark target matter, like Melanin, in the area that causes hair growth, (the follicle), while not heating the rest of the skin. Light is absorbed by dark objects, so laser energy can be absorbed by dark material in the skin (but with much more speed and intensity). This dark target matter, or chromophore, can be

46 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

naturally-occurring or artificially introduced. The GentleLase Laser Hair reduction laser selectively targets melanin, considered the primary chromophore for all hair removal lasers currently on the market. Melanin occurs naturally in the skin. It gives skin and hair its color. There are two types of melanin in hair: eumelanin (which gives hair brown or black color) and pheomelanin (which gives hair blonde or red color). Because of the selective absorption of photons of laser light, only black or brown hair can be removed. Both men and women seek laser hair removal services to have superfluous or unwanted hair removed or reduced. It is commonly done on lip, chin, ear lobe, shoulders, back, underarm, abdomen, buttocks, pubic area, bikini lines, thighs, face, neck, chest, arms, legs, hands, and toes. Laser works best with dark coarse hair. Light skin and dark hair are an ideal combination, but new lasers are now able to target dark black hair even in patients with dark skin. Is GentleLASE Laser Hair Removal Painful? One criticism of Methods of Laser hair removal has been discomfort. Epidermal cooling or skin cooling using a refrigerant or cooling agent to the skin immediately before the laser pulse to the skin has been determined to allow higher energy transfer and reduce pain and side effects, especially in darker skin. So, a particularly uncomfortable process is made very comfortable by the inclusion of this comfort feature by the GentleLASE system. How many Treatments are needed? Multiple treatments, usually 6-8, but as much as 12 depending on the type of hair you have and skin color, have been shown in numerous studies to provide long-term reduction of hair. Current parameters suggest a series of treatments spaced at 4-6 weeks apart

health&Beauty

So6ixJuly2011

for most areas, although the timing of treatments has still not been standardized. The number of sessions depends on various parameters, including the area of the body treated, skin color, coarseness of hair, and gender. In addition, since hair grows in several phases, (anagen, telogen, catagen), and laser can only affect the currently actively growing follicles, (anagen), several sessions are needed to kill hair in all phases of growth. Coarse dark hair on light skin is easiest to treat. Finer hair and hair on darker skin is harder to treat and may require more treatments. Certain areas (notably men’s and women’s faces) may require considerably more treatments to achieve desired results. So, junk the football jersey and get out the Bikini. With GentleLase Laser Hair Removal, you’ll be OK! Dr. Harvey Jenkins is a Harvardtrained Orthopedist & Spine specialist, practicing in South Oklahoma City. Feel Fabulous in the Skin You’re In

Summer is definitely here and with the temperature rising above 100 degrees, many of us are a little hesitant to bear all on the beach. Bikinis and swimsuits are not exactly the most discreet items of clothing, and given that most people would never dream of parading themselves about in just their underwear, it is no wonder that the prospect is a slightly scary one. Instead of hitting the gym or starting out on a new fad diet, however, why not simply try to learn to love the skin you’re in and make the most of your assets, just as they are? There is plenty of flattering swimwear solutions available if you are willing to take the time to seek them out. If the mere idea of donning a bikini in public makes you uncomfortable, simply don’t do it! Go for a stylish one piece instead. If you are still feeling a little shaky, add a sarong, a kaftan or a tunic to start with and build up your confidence one step at a time. Swimsuits are also a fabulous way to enhance your shape, whatever it may be. There are all kinds of swimsuits available that can boost your bust, suck in your tummy, shrink your bum and

48 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

give you all the comfortable support you require. If it’s a confidence boost you need, a great one piece is definitely the way forward. Bikinis are sometimes a little trickier. The most popular ones are the string designed halter necks that tie up so they can be adjusted to fit a wide range of sizes. However, the fact is that this design is not flattering on everyone and offers very little support to those with bigger busts. A good trick is to mix and match separates. There are now a good number of retailers that allow you to choose a bikini top in one size and briefs in another. Not all of us are the same size on the top as we are on the bottom, so instead of trying to squeeze one half into something that doesn’t fit, pick and choose your sizes from a range of possibilities. Those boasting boyish figures usually have it easy when it comes to bikini buying. They don’t have to worry about unsightly tums and bums and cleavage support is rarely an issue. However, if you are looking for ways to boost your bust look out for halter neck gel bikinis that will give you that extra bit of volume to your bust line.

Women really are at an advantage when it comes to selecting swimwear designs, as the number of women’s designs far exceeds the number of men’s designs. Women’s swimsuits come in one-piece designs, swim dress designs, sarong swimsuits, tankini suits and several bikini designs. Whereas men’s suits are available mostly in the stan-

Fashion

So6ixJuly2011 dard racing style, swim trunk and swim short designs. The list of swimwear accessories is as great as the swimsuits to be had. The accessories are an important part of your beach or lake excursion, and can include; straw hats, crochet hats, sun hats, short chemises, cover ups, thongs, sunglasses, tote bags, mesh bags and most importantly beach towels. Children’s swimwear offers some excellent options for those little one’s just learning to swim. There are great thermal wear suits available, which keep children nice and warm, the innovative suits are made from a specially treated heat reflective neoprene material. Thermal wear suits and special sun protective swimwear also offer UV protection from the sun. There are special water shoes for children that protect their small feet and help to prevent slips. Then of course there is the wide variety of designs and fabrics available to choose from. Designs for girls come in one and two piece while the boys’ suits most often come in the short and trunk designs. Confidence is paramount. If you are not comfortable, you are sure to damage your confidence so make comfort your first priority. Make fashionable your second priority by adding an oversized hat, designer shades, or a chic cover up. Even an oversized necklace or cuff can add va va voom to your beach ensemble. Why not go for a skin boosting spa treatment and a pedicure before you leave? These are all things that will help you to feel fabulous in the skin you’re in.

ON SUGARING OR WAXING

The burden of hair removal has been an issue for women for ages. Let’s be honest here, women don’t want hairy legs, and pulling out the razor everyday can really become a chore. Band-Aidcovered nicks and cuts aren’t very attractive either. Many women out there have not ventured into the arts of sugaring or waxing yet, but don’t let the many myths about painful waxing make you shy away from it. The best way to decide whether or not to head to your local salon is to know the facts about which method is best for you. Did you know that methods of hair removal have dated back to ancient Mesopotamia, Greece and Egypt? (One museum located in England has bronze hair tweezers from 1900 BC!) Women of the ancient world felt that they were cleaner and fresher when they were hairless. Apparently, that ideal stuck because women today are still seeking the easiest and most effective way to get rid of unwanted hair.

50 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

Waxing has been efficient for ages. It removes the hair from the root, causing a longer lasting smoothness and over time can produce less regrowth. Waxing ingredients differ depending on the salon, but most use non-organic ingredients. This puts you at greater risk for allergic reactions. There are a few salons that do use natural ingredients, but you’ll pay a bit more for those. Also, wax is not water-soluble, meaning that stray bits of wax cannot be easily removed with water. But this also means that it gets the job done. Waxing is still one of the most effective ways of removing large areas of hair quickly. So if wax is so widely used and effective, then why bother looking into sugaring? For starters, it is all-natural. Just sugar, water, and lemon juice are mixed together to create a paste (some add honey or oils). No unwanted chemicals or harmful ingredients are added, meaning it is safer and healthier for your skin. The paste or gel sticks to the skin, but it’s

health&Beauty

So6ixJuly2011 not sticky like wax. The mixture is water soluble, so any residue left on your skin can simply be washed off with water since the ingredients are all watersoluble. Sugaring also only attaches to hair and dead skin cells. Waxing often pulls up live skin cells in addition to everything else. This is not only more irritating for your skin, but also causes more pain. Although sugaring is not pain-free (you are still pulling hair from the roots…), it has been said by many that sugaring is a bit less painful than waxing. Another reason that sugaring could be less painful is that the solution is pulled off in the direction of the hair growth (in most sugaring methods), but wax is almost always pulled off in the opposite direction of the hair growth, causing more pain. Sugar mixtures are also not heated like wax, so there’s no chance of burning your skin. However, there are some things to be aware of when choosing either of these

health&Beauty

So6ixHEALTH&BEAUTY methods. Some salons advertise that they do sugaring, but really they just mix regular wax with sugar. This is not authentic sugaring, and therefore you do not get any of the benefits of sugaring. Don’t fall for this one! Check out the salon before you decide and make sure they are using the real stuff. Be careful about trying to do sugaring at home. The consistency has to be just right or it won’t stick to the hair and you’ll just end up with a bunch of sticky goo all over yourself. If you are unsure of yourself but still want to try hair removal at home, it is better to buy an at-home waxing kit, complete with the right ingredients and materials. Make sure your salon is sanitary and has trained professionals. The wrong concoction or application can cause your skin to become very irritated, or worse, you could contract an infection. Choosing a method can be daunting, but as long as you are well informed, you can make a conscious decision for what is best for you.

and what they Want: South Beach Style

Much like LeBron James, I decided to take my talents to South Beach for a week of pure indulgence. Surrounded by the beautiful sites, gorgeous people, and amazing fashion, I must admit I was in total heaven. During my stay, I attended the monthly “What Women Want” fashion show at the famed Nikki Beach. This month’s event featured a fashion show by Met Jeans and Stella & Dot. The attending fashionistas relaxed while sipping on champagne provided by Veuve Moisans and enjoying cupcakes by Enchanting Creations. The afternoon event focused on fashion and relaxation with Midori hosting a tasting of Kim Kardashian’s new cocktail, Stand Out Midori and Splurge Studios on hand for makeup applications and mini photoshoots. The relaxation theme was topped off with the runway show that allowed women to look amazing in simple combinations of jeans, a basic tank top, and incredible jewelry. To truly make it a

Nikki Beach style afternoon, the party didn’t stop. DJ Felipe Kaval was at the turntables keeping the beats going and people dancing. If you are headed to Miami anytime soon, I would suggest that you try to make it to a “What Women Want” event. From the featured fashions to the gift bags to the live entertainment, this monthly event is something you definitely don’t want to miss out on! Oklahoman’s Serving in the Summer Each year MDA supports nearly 90 summer camps across the country. The Oklahoma MDA Chapter just completed their summer camp this past month at the Central Christian Camp in Guthrie, OK. Trang Cao, a local model of So6ix, is the Camp Director and Healthcare Coordinator for the Oklahoma branch of MDA. Cao said, “I just really want to commend the community for their loving and caring support of our camp. Our camp was just June 19-24th and we had a camp of a 125 people, and our kids loved the activities and volunteer staff there!” The Muscular Dystrophy Association is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy, and education. MDA supports more research on neuromuscular diseases than any other privatesector organization in the world. MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and support services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. With national headquarters in Tucson, MDA has more than 200 offices across the country, sponsors some 200 hospitalaffiliated clinics and supports more than 330 research projects around the world. “You don’t understand how truly touched I am that I have an opportunity to be graced by these children. They’ve taught me so much about what not to take for granted and how to live life to its fullest. This week can really alter your perspective on what’s really important in your life,” says Cao. Muscular dystrophy affects each person differently. Advocating to the public about having volunteers who can commit to a week of camp is something the MDA organization always needs. Some are able to walk but may fall easily.

Some have wheelchairs. Some will need help with the bathroom, bathing, getting dressed and eating. Some campers might have respiratory equipment that they use. “All of our volunteers are such amazing, intelligent and caring individuals. It takes a lot of maturity to take care of another person’s hygiene and needs. When I look for volunteers I look for all of those characteristics and eagerness to help others.” The cost of sending one child to MDA camp for one week is $800. The Oklahoma camp has close to 50 campers a summer. The camp is a non-profit and donation based only. If you want to help out with the camp next summer, please contact the local MDA office at 405-722-8001. “It only takes one muscle to make a difference and that’s your heart.”
