L ETTE R F R OM THE S TAFF Are you a person like me who has so much love to give? Adores the color red? Can’t get enough of chocolate? Well lucky enough for us it’s the month of Valentines Day or as it’s typically called, February! Let’s all do a little small dance that it’s the last full month of winter as we are quickly approaching spring, yay! Our Health & Fitness issue is a great one. Many of us are still pushing forward in our New Year’s resolutions (I applaud you!) and still need inspiration as well as tips to continue towards a healthy and fit life. The latest craze seems to be the meal replacement shakes and various supplements; we break them down for you and help you to have an easier decision when choosing one. Do you need help sticking to your goals? We reviewed the numerous health and fitness applications for iPhone and Android that aid in eating and working out goals. Emily Sutton and Scott Hines of KFOR-TV, here in the city, were a blast to work with and are amazing role models for health and fitness. They are participating in the Arizona Ironman in

November 2014 and are doing it all for a great cause, Go Mitch Go. Visit GoMitchGo.com for ways you can help. My mantra for February:

Forgive someone Accept a compliment Rise above it Have more patience Go outside often Love yourself

Don’t overlook life’s small joys while searching for the big ones – happiness is all around you.

While the jury is still out on whether or not soy is dangerous, there are plenty of promoters on both sides of the argument. Formula 1 contains a lot more sugar than most other shake mixes and its sodium content is sky-high at 145mg per serving. The amount of protein is also skimpy, so you might want to look for a shake that gives you more of it. Formula 1 is allergen-free, and that’s a plus. It’s also one of the better tasting shake mixes.

You’ve both signed up and are participating in TEAM OKLAHOMA to do an Ironman in Tempe, Arizona on November 16, 2014. Tell us why you’re doing this.

Scott - The better question is why not? 2013 was a whirlwind of new experiences, obstacles and self-discovery. Ultimately, I've set out on this new adventure to become a maker of change. I want to inspire. I want to live intentionally. There’s also the cancer component of our mission. We've all been affected by cancer in some way. My sweet friend, Stacey Slaton, a young mother of two, recently passed away. My grandmother and greatgrandmother are cancer survivors.

Emily - I am a part of TEAM OKLAHOMA, a group of 13 Oklahomans training for the Arizona FULL Ironman in November in the fight against blood cancers! We are trying to raise $200,000 for The Go Mitch Go Foundation, a local non-profit inspired by Mitchell Whitaker, a Choctaw native that died of Leukemia at age 10. His last words were, “keep fighting.” I am also racing in honor of my Aunt Liz who is currently fighting Leukemia.

Your goal is to raise $200,000 to be sent to a direct connection at Integrative Cancer Research at MIT for this blood cancer research. How can we all help/donate?

Emily - 2 ways - donate or participate! You can sign up for a race – big or small and raise money 18

What are your eating habits like during the training?

Scott - I eat super clean and try to stick to the outer walls of the grocery store. I’m gluten-free and steer clear of processed foods, white flour and refined sugars. I load up on good fats, like avocado, nuts and olives. I eat organic fruits and

vegetables, grass fed beef, wild fish, organic eggs and chicken. I cook with coconut oil and drink coconut water and raw goat milk.

Emily - When I did my first full Ironman I figured I could eat anything I wanted since we were burning so many calories training.

During the

high mileage weeks, I am hungry all the time and eat like a teenage boy. It turns out that pizza and queso aren’t great recovery foods. This year I am trying to eat clean and lean towards Paleo. I call it “paleoalmost.”

The Quest for Better Skin:

REVERSING THE DAMAGE BY

Rebecca Brady, RN for The Medical Spa by Dr. Juan Brou

so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2014

In my line of work, I have seen all types of skin problems‌.hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, rosacea, tone and texture issues, large pore size and more. Some patients are genetically predisposed to have some of these features, while others acquire flaws by endless days of sunbathing, smoking, or stress. Patients of all ages come in to The Medical Spa; some looking for prevent and some looking to repair. Luckily for us, there are many different options for each type of skin problem! Most issues are not fully corrected by one single thing, but rather a cocktail of treatments tailored to the patient’s specific skin type. I am going to list our most common skin complaints and what you can do to correct them. so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2014

SOPHABELLA’S Wine Bar & Bistro

Whether you are in the mood for a romantic dinner, a casual lunch, Saturday or Sunday brunch, or even a new happy hour… I have found the perfect spot for any occasion. Sophabella’s Wine Bar & Bistro is located just south of Wilshire on May in Oklahoma City. This chic wine bar & bistro delivers far more than just a meal. We had the privilege of visiting with the owner, Bill Brazil, during our lunch. What a treat. We learned the history of this quaint Italian restaurant, about the love, passion and hard work that has been poured into making it what it is today. Over the past 14 years, Mr. Brazil has mastered the art of exquisite service and an exceptional dining experience. Named after his children, Sophia and Isabella, Mr. Brazil has grown this gem into one of OKC’s best-kept secrets. Sophabella’s Wine Bar & Bistro has definitely made its way into my heart. Offering over 70 bottles of wine on their list, all are reasonably priced. The entrées we experienced were perfect… absolutely perfect. The importance they put into quality and consistency is remarkable. All menu items are made from scratch with fresh ingredients, including the pasta, bread, chocolate cake, and even the sauce that takes 72+ hours to make. I speak specifically on the perfection of the following menu items: WINE: We chose the house wine, which both were delicious: • Red – William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon (Dark, Rich, full of fruit flavors, with a hint of toasted oak and caramel) Vintage 2011 • White – William Hill Chardonnay (Well balanced with flavors of fruit and spice, and a subtle hint of vanilla) Vintage 2011

• Filet Au Poivre - 8oz prime filet rolled in cracked black pepper, charbroiled in a 650-degree oven, and then topped with cognac cream sauce served with garlic mash potatoes and grilled vegetables. This prime filet seemed to melt in your mouth.

SOUP: • Lobster & Crab Bisque Soup – Served Every Day • Prime Rib & Mushroom Soup - Chef’s Special Delicious!

• Gorgonzola Stuffed Filet - An 8oz prime Filet stuffed with gorgonzola cheese and topped with a veal demi-glaze cream sauce served with scalloped potatoes and grilled asparagus…. The best steak I have ever had…. Hands down

PIZZA: • Margarita Pizza – Hard to believe pizza can taste this amazing. You just have to try it. It doesn’t have pizza sauce, just garlic, cheese, and tomatoes… ENTRÉE: • Chicken Marsala – The most delectable chicken marsala you could imagine. The marsala wine with the demi-glaze, garlic and cream sauce was the perfect way to serve homemade fettuccini.

44

so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2014

And my favorite……

DESSERT: • Gavino's Double Chocolate Cake – Homemade by Mr. Brazil’s mother-in-law. When was the last time you had a REAL chocolate cake?? Perfectly paired with the Palenti Gelato (Vanilla). • Chocolate Chip Cannolis – Tube shaped shells made of pastry dough, with a creamy filling. A staple in homes of Italy.

NEED TO KNOW! Saturday and Sunday Breakfast & Brunch • $1 Mimosas • Bloody Mary bar

2 Daily Specials – Inspired by Executive Chef / Owner Happy Hour 3pm – 7pm M – F • $2 Bud Light Draw • $5 Build your own brick oven pizza (Any topping, excluding seafood)

MIMI MARLATT BodyPump Instructor – Gold’s Gym

Meet Mimi Marlatt, Gold’s Gym, BodyPump Instructor! You can catch Mimi at the Edmond location off of Bryant and Danforth on Wednesday and Friday mornings at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday nights at 5:30 p.m. How’d all this get started? Mimi had been taking BodyPump for three years with Vickey, one of the managers at Gold’s. She eventually approached Mimi and asked if she would be interested in teaching the class. Mimi saw that it was a Les Mills workout and said of course! It took her three days to get certified through various classes and training. Working out and living a fit lifestyle has always been a passion for Mimi. Her husband, Chris, used to be a personal trainer for Aspen back in the day and then went on to other gyms around the city. Mimi herself, used to manage Anytime Fitness, which eventually led her to open up her own personal training studio. Life got busy with two kiddos and that business was sold and of course now you’ll find Mimi at Gold’s in Edmond! The BodyPump class is completely transforming. It consists of less weight and more reps, which is suitable for both men and women. The entire class is choreographed to music where the attendees will move through workouts that target all parts of the body such as squats, to chest, to back, to biceps, to triceps, etc. It’s designed for all ages and sizes that have a desire to come and get stronger. Mimi is happily married to her Athletic husband, Chris Marlatt. They have two sweet children that keep them fit as well, I’m sure. If you were to tap into her iTunes during her personal workouts, you’d hear Rihanna! As a workout instructor, Mimi strives to eat as healthy as possible with her favorite meal being grilled Salmon and her favorite cheat meal would have to be something like nachos. She explained that she absolutely loves working for Gold’s. “They have an amazing staff, great gym, my boss Vickey is amazing,” said Mimi. Swing by Gold’s and check out Mimi’s class! 60

STEVE CLAUSEN Owner/Personal Trainer – OneHealthyBod

Meet Steven Clausen, owner and personal trainer of OneHealthyBod, here in Oklahoma City. As a guy who has always loved sports as a child and that love eventually grew into weight training, he didn’t get a conventional inspirational push into personal training. His father had a stroke when Steve was in the 6th grade. Steve helped his father over the years in things like walking again; he knew from then on he was meant to help others become strong, healthy, and simply better. It didn’t take long for him to understand that if there is a will, there is a way. OneHealthyBod does many different things from personal training sessions, boot camp classes, and training various dance teams. If there was one way to describe the workouts, they are a mixture of plyometric exercises and high intense interval circuits. Think that OneHealthyBod does just boot camp? Think again. OneHealthyBod is the official trainer of The Oklahoma City Thunder Girls, Golden State Warrior Girls, The University of Oklahoma Spirit Squad, University of Tulsa Spirit Squad, and the University of Central Oklahoma Spirit Squad, and the Oklahoma City Biggest Loser Contest. They truly do so much more than people could even imagine, from Fitness Expo’s, Jump Start Run a 5 and 10K race for a great cause, and even training bikini models. Steve is so proud of marrying his beautiful and supportive wife, Holly. He is also very proud of developing a training system that helps change peoples lives. He truly means it when he says, “progress is my passion.” He can’t see himself doing anything besides personal training. Trying to get the body you desire is also very strongly related to the way you eat. Steve’s favorite clean meal is grilled chicken breast with sweet potato and spinach. Who doesn’t deserve a little cheat meal every now and then? Steve’s weakness would be double stuffed Oreos. YUM! What are Steve’s future goals or plans you ask? His response, “You’ll SEE.” To schedule an appointment with Steve Clausen, email steve@onehealthybod.com. so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2014
