LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Imagine walking into a square room with four walls, all painted white. The ceiling is white. The floors are gray concrete. There is one plain chair in the center of the room. You sit alone in the chair, and you observe the room. Inspired or not? Although potential always exists for inspiration, it’s not likely that the details of the stark room just described will serve as a source of creative energy. Now let’s begin again. Imagine you walk into the same space, but in front of you is a large window. Turquoise silk drapes frame the glass. Cherry blossoms, blue spruce, and azaleas are in view. You glance upward, and through a ceiling of glass you behold a boundless sky. To your left, the walls are adorned with vibrant paintings and intriguing photography. You turn to the sound of trickling water to your right – a combination of stone, metal, and moving water in a feature adjacent to the wall. Beneath you, soft woolen fibers. You’re in the same space as before, but this time it’s bedecked with art – with the human endeavor to imagine and create beauty. In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Nature, he writes, “The creation of beauty is Art.” As humans, we have an opportunity to form beauty through our thoughts, words, actions, and

month. Each class runs about two hours, and potters can choose from 6pm-8pm on Tuesday nights or Saturdays from 10am-12pm. Laid-back artists know that unexpected things can and do happen, so if need be, you can always make up a class without feeling you’ve been left behind. The first class typically begins with students handbuilding a piece and learning the basics. You’ll likely begin your first class using an oatmeal box as a support for the clay, and you will be well on your way to a finished piece you can be proud of.

Collin says that his curriculum encourages

longevity, so you’ll keep learning more as long as you continue to enroll in the courses. Classes are sculptures. He recently collaborated with fellow artist and teacher G. Patrick Riley on a piece of artwork for the Oklahoma Supreme Court, and he will be travelling to Dallas for a show of his work this October. You can see Rosebrook’s sculptures in front of the Paseo Originals gallery as you walk through the Arts District. The works of Bev Birkle, Bonnie Matter, Hector Cobos-Leon, Matt Murray, and eleven other associates are always on display in the front gallery. Bonnie Matter’s hand-painted earthenware is captivating. Matt Murray does a lot of alteration to his pieces. After throwing the clay, he will pinch and squish it into stunning and intricate pieces that are sometimes reminiscent of a genie’s lamp. Hector Cobos-Leon creates multi-colored large vases with warm hues and vivid textures. The gallery is filled with treasures in the form of dishes, wine glasses, vases, mugs, and mirrors. There is also a section of majolica for sale, a festively intricate design of dinnerware that

CASSIE STOVER Cassie Stover is the owner/artist of Hudson Tattoo [and art studio] in Oklahoma City. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Fine Arts, Cassie knew that she wanted to pursue a creative profession. Upon her graduation, tattooing had just become legal in Oklahoma, and Cassie saw the possibilities of a fun and artistic career. Cassie also loves to paint. So, in 2008, she decided to combine her love of painting and tattoos, which culminated in her own studio space. Cassie likes to host art shows every few months to showcase the work of local, visual artists and to be an integral and supportive patron of the art community in Oklahoma City. Cassie enjoys a variety of tattoo styles, but her own personal style leans more toward realistic subject matter. She likes the challenge of creating realistic tattoos and making tattoos appear as 3-Dimensional as possible. When Cassie is not tattooing, you’re likely to find her painting. As she aptly says about herself, “I love to paint.” Her style of painting is a bit of a departure from her style of tattooing. “Painting gives me the freedom to get to play with the paint, build layers, and textures etc. I enjoy the overall mess on the canvas,” notes Cassie. She also enjoys spending her free time traveling, going to shows, “Thundering Up”, laughing, and having drinks with her friends.

MATT JOSEF Matt Josef is an artist and entrepreneur. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Matt had his hands in creating art for his entire life. He has spent the past ten years honing his personal style, experimenting with a variety of techniques, medias, and subject matters. A self-taught artist, Matt has had nearly fifteen studios throughout Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and Oklahoma. His work is in both private and corporate collections across the United States and in Honduras. Matt is best known for his figurative oil paintings, but he has recently taken the leap into contemporary, modern, and abstract botanical paintings. Using multiple layers of paint and gold leaf, Matt creates from intuition, allowing each piece to develop into its own. In between painting, Matt writes, designs, sculpts, photographs, and dreams of his next adventure to inspire new creations. Matt is currently working on creating a line of designer T-shirts and reproducing his paintings into limited edition prints. He also designs contemporary southwest jewelry. Come in on one of the many live music nights, and experience it for yourself. Their delicious crab cake is a classic Maryland style crab cake with a heavenly Cajun twist. It’s placed atop a flavorful bed of bourblanc, which is a white wine butter cream sauce, and it’s topped with savory crawfish. A perfect complimentary entrée is the Seafood Sauté, a divine combination of Dutch potatoes, cheese, and chives baked with fresh shrimp, crab, and lobster meat. The dish is covered in Jazmo’z famous Boublanc sauce, Swiss and parmesan cheese, and baked again until golden brown. It should be a sin to consume this amazing dish.
