Mediterranean Meal: Olive Branch Café Have you ever walked into a restaurant and immediately felt as if you just picked the perfect place for an enjoyable evening with great ambiance and delectable food? Well this is precisely the scenario upon entering the Olive Branch Café. Not only are you greeted with smiles at the door, but your taste buds also go on a wild journey of zest and fervor. On the Corner of Sheridan and Hudson Avenue stands this authentic yet reasonable Mediterranean Café. You will automatically transcend into the Middle East with their appetizer of Hummus that can be both the spice to kick-start your meal and a perfectly creamy texture to ease your way into a delicious dish. For you meal, you have a number of tasty choices, ranging from a Jerusalem salad to piping-hot Kabob platters, which can include chicken, lamb, or gyro

10

meat with sautéed vegetables and specially seasoned rice. If you did not get enough hummus and pita the first time around, do not be discouraged, as hummus and pita is served with the entrees as well. Just when you think you have had enough excitement for one meal, homemade baklava is placed in front of you for dessert. Now you may choose to agree or disagree with my opinion, but this is by far the best Baklava I have ever had the pleasure of eating. With just one bite your body begins to sink with that feeling of complete satisfaction as it melts slowly in your mouth. So if you are craving something authentic and out of the ordinary, or just need a quick snack, The Olive Branch Café definitely deserves a top spot on your list of things to try in Oklahoma City!

HARLEY CLIFFORD

Dominates the Competition

Wakeboarding – a sport of speed, skill, and thrill! A popular sport for summertime fun where a motorboat tows a rider who skirts across boat wakes and waves and catches air in an attempt to perform tricks. For most people, wakeboarding takes a lot of practice just to stay upright and hopefully learn a trick or two. But For 16-year-old, Wakeboard Pro Harley Clifford, flying through the air behind a boat comes natural. Clifford, an Australian native, has taken the international wakeboarding scene by storm and has added a Pro Tour stop win to his growing list of accomplishments. On May 27, 2010 Clifford was declared the event winner at the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour stop in Acworth, Georgia. Clifford not only won the event, but also landed a handle pass KGB 540. It was the first time the trick has ever been done in a competition. “I’m stoked,” Clifford said following the event. “Sticking the KGB 5 and winning the first Pro Tour stop in the same day is just unreal.” The 16-year-old, Brisbane, Australian phenom came to Oklahoma City in early June to attend So6ix magazine’s River

SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

Fest 2010. He wowed the crowd with his skills on the water and sat down to discuss his exploding career. Clifford began wakeboarding at a young age and credits his youth outings with his family in Australia as the catalyst to his current career. “My family and I just always liked to go out on the boat. We probably started wakeboarding when I was about five,” said Clifford. “Everybody in my family was supportive and pushed me. They pushed me to wakeboard, and I loved it!” Clifford says he was about seven when he started competing. Since then, he has become one of the world’s best at his sport. Harley loves the ride it’s been. “It’s a pretty crazy feeling. The year before last year I was in juniors, and then last year I just decided to go pro and ended up winning pretty much every competition. So, it was a shock, and it was a cool feeling.” Some of his career highlights include being 1st overall at the 2009 Australian Pro Tour, two-time Wake Wars Champion, 1st place in the U.S. Junior Masters, first place in the 2009 Pro Tour in Texas, and first place at this year’s tour’s first stop. Despite all the pressure and past accomplishments, Harley takes it one run at a time, and he tries to enjoy the moment. “It’s pretty fun sometimes; sometimes it’s nerve-racking because I have to deal with all the pressure. But, I just go out there and try to prove what I can do. I don’t really worry about the tricks everyone else is doing.” At age 16, Clifford has grown quite the following. With big-name sponsors like Oakley and Monster Energy as well as others, Harley’s name will continue to grow his popularity in the states and overseas. The future is bright for Clifford! When asked if he wanted to continue wakeboarding for years to come, he smiled and said: “Yeah, yeah, definitely. Until my body can’t handle it anymore.”

and Sports Expo. Did we see YOU there?

14

The Biltmore Hotel was bustling with curious visitors at the OKC Health and Wellness Group sponsored Family Health and Sports Expo on June 12th. More than 30 vendors from around the state came together to educate the public on what they can do to live a healthier lifestyle and introduce some of the new healthy alternatives that are out there. Some highlights of the event included: Dr. Angela Collymore-Slovak and the OKC Health and Wellness Group work to inform the public on ways of improving Oklahoma’s overall health. At the Expo she spoke about antiaging and the benefits of anti-oxidants. She also had a booth with Arbonne International cosmetics, which has an extensive line of products that when used helps reduce the signs of aging and is naturally healthy for the skin. Dr.Vonda Shawver with Advanced Relief Chiropractic and Acupuncture spoke about managing pain through chiropractic relief and acupuncture. She stressed the importance of getting regular check-ups, as proper spinal alignment contributes to other systems in the body functioning properly. “Get an exam early and often; pain is the last step the body has in letting you know there is something wrong.” Dr. Don White, a Clinical Hypnotherapist, presented a lecture entitled, “Changing Your Mind and Changing Your Life.” Two years ago, he developed a CD series on typical things for which people seek therapy—everything from athletic performance to anxieties and anything that interferes with daily living. Dr. White is an internationally recognized expert in the field of hypnotherapy and peak performance. He has an office in Edmond and sees patients by appointments only. All appointments are one-on-one. Dr. Ryan Hanson with Hanson Chiropractic informed visitors about what health means for a family and how failing to plan for health can lead to undesired outcomes later in life. Dr. Hanson’s clinic works to promote “Maximized Living” and the clinic holds workshops on how to achieve this. Dr. Hanson is also the wellness adviser for the U.S. Olympic team for Oklahoma, and many of the U.S. Olympic teams utilize the “Maximized Living” program. Wrestlers, for instance, have found that an adjustment before a match increases their speed by 20%. Quite impressive statistics!

John Limber, owner of Swiss Cleaners in the OKC area was there with his product called Monavie, which is a health drink made from the acai berry and 18 other body-beneficial fruits from around the world. The product is loaded with antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Users say they have seen improvement in joint health, they have more energy during the day, they sleep better at night, and they have fewer aches and pains. Amy King of King’s Green Cleaning brought in her line of Shaklee products that are all natural and environmentally friendly. The planet friendly, pet friendly, and non-toxic cleaning supplies are the foundation of her cleaning business. King’s Green Cleaning uses only the safest cleaning supplies available. Angela Fox with A. Fox Services was there. Her company tests your water for impurities and helps you form a plan of action for making sure you and your family gets the purest and highest quality of water. She is raising money for the people in Haiti to get water purification drinking straws. The straws are $10 apiece, and her company has joined in the Haiti relief effort. Visit www.waterislife.com for more information on how you can help. Deborah A. Gray, a Licensed Professional Counselor with DAG Counseling Services, PLLC, was there to let everyone know about their services. “We are here for the community, and we are a client-centered agency, which means we feel like the client’s needs are first,” Gray said. A unique facet of DAG Counseling Services is that they provide summer programs for kids in which they not only offer counseling but also incorporate interactive, educational activities.

The Little Things

So6ixJuly2010 By: Michael Cross, (Dr. Tru Luv)

Sometimes the best gift isn’t expensive at all... Over the last couple of months, I’ve learned something simple yet so important when it comes to having an enjoyable relationship. Sometimes, I believe that people think too hard when doing things to make their partner feel happy or special. This pertains to men more than it does to women, but both sexes can benefit from the concept. The truth is that when it comes to pleasing that special someone, it doesn’t always need to be the perfect date or expensive gifts. Actually, the things that really make someone feel special are the little things. Don’t get me wrong, great dates and expensive gifts can really make someone feel special or wanted, but they shouldn’t be done all the time. People like to be treated well, and one small thing can make someone’s entire day. Special events have been used as an opportunity for people to remind their partners that they love them. But why does it only have to be done during special occasions? Don’t most couples want to feel they are special and loved all the time and not just once in a while? How can you do this for your partner? It’s easy, just think SIMPLE! Men, continuously shower your lady with compliments, bring her flowers at work, kiss her or touch her as you pass by, just to let her know you are there, make sure she knows that you are her man. Women, let your man know he’s important, attractive, and needed by asking him for advice, doing things to help him out, and showing him little bits of affection. Small things, like these, can be done every day, and they will constantly make your partner feel special, not to mention it won’t drain your bank account. Then, every once in a while, surprise them with a big gift or an amazing date. Couples, be sure that your partner is confident that they are your “number one.” Everybody wants to be captivating someone’s attention and love. Doing the

16

little things will constantly remind him or her of your love towards them. Big dates and expensive gifts shouldn’t have to be used as a method to remind your partner that you care when doubt arises; they should be “icing on the cake.” It’s the little things in life that impact a person the most. Continuously remind the one you love that he or she is your number one by doing the LITTLE THINGS!

Summer Shape-Up

Stay in Shape for Summer Summer time is upon us, which means it’s vacation time. If the beach is your final destination, no doubt you have put some blood, sweat, and tears into sculpting your beach body. Now, how do you enjoy your vacation, but not fall completely off the wagon and lose the healthy gains you have worked so hard for? I have seen it time and time again: dedicated folks working very hard to attain their goal, only to spiral so far out of control that they never return to their fitness program post- vacation. Hopefully, these simple suggestions can help you to enjoy your vacation while maintaining your quest for a healthy life. Food often becomes a focal point on a vacation— tasty appetizers, extravagant meals, and desserts to die for. While it’s all so tempting, consider skipping some items. For instance, forgo the breadbaskets served before meals as well as

the sides of rice that come with meals. And consider adding certain items to your plate, like a fruit appetizer, a mixed green salad, and some extra veggies with your main course. Also, with every meal, try to enjoy a good source of protein, and top it off with a bit of healthy fat such as avocados, nuts, and seeds. This will keep those trips down the desert menu from wreaking as much havoc as they otherwise could. Do not obsess about mealtime; just be sensible about your choices. Move around while you’re out of town. Ideally, you can find a scenic place to do this rather than the hotel fitness center. When is the last time you ran as fast as you possibly could? Try it a few times on the beach, and remember what it was like to move like a kid. Plan a hike, bike ride, or family walk. Pack a jump rope and spend 5-10 minutes jumping rope, or get creative with it. Try putting a few movements together for a quick workout. Three rounds for time of 50 jump rope, 30 sit-ups, and 10 push-ups. Include the kids in the workout. It is amazing what a stopwatch and the phrase “3-2-1-GO” can do to up the competition! Creativity is your only limiting factor. Most importantly enjoy your time away from the routine of real life! Smart choices and a little movement can make that pending return to real life a little smoother than without.

Rockin’ the blues:

By: Ali Plum

Shane Henry’s Beauty in the Struggle

Oklahoma’s music scene is ripe with talent. Synergy in the art and music industries has culminated in a showcasing of talent enjoyed by people on a local, national, and even international level. Shane Henry, born and raised in Verden, Oklahoma, is no exception to this phenomenon. Starting his music career at age 17 by playing in local bars a few times a week, Shane was quickly recognized as a unique talent. But Shane’s interest and connection to music started much earlier than his late teens; his father introduced him to “the greats”--Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan (just to name a few) at an early age. Shane considers himself blessed to have grown up in such a musically alive environment. With his dad on guitar and mom on piano, Shane’s first jam sessions were at home, and at a young age he knew he wanted to perform. He says it was a natural progression to pick up an instrument and play music. But his most inspiring moment of self-revelation came at a B.B. King concert, and he knew for certain that he wanted to seriously pursue music as a career. Early in Shane’s career, dreams and tour dates came true. The experience from his first tour proved invaluable to the next phase of his musical journey and solidified his natural ability to perform and connect with his audience. Lyrically, Shane’s music feels soulful, hopeful, and truthful. Melodically, his songs feel bluesy, with a paradox of retro-rock edge and acoustic intimacy. Shane’s latest album release is the antic-

20

ipated Beauty in the Struggle. A college tour in the fall along with other notable venues nationwide will reconnect Shane Henry and the fans he won over years ago when he embarked on his first tour at the age of 19. Shane’s passion and drive to make music and perform live in a quickly changing music industry is resolute. This same intensity goes into each stage of the creative process--from the birth of a song in the reflective writing stage, to the collaborative work that takes place in the studio, to the stage where he performs live--a feeling he describes as “the best drug; there’s nothing like performing for people who want to listen to your music.” Shane is clear in his philosophy, “You have to be willing to change, take chances, take risks.” His new album is proof of this philosophy. He’s trying new things and enjoying new collaborations with artists both locally and in L.A. Shane’s back to touring across the country, guitar in tow, still wowing crowds with his raw talent, ready to embrace where the road will take him next. After time and experience in the music industry, Shane says it’s still all about the grassroots. The magic of the moment between listener and performer at a live show is what it’s all about for him. Released on itunes in July, Beauty in the Struggle describes the last seven years of Shane’s journey as an artist...and in life. “I’m really happy with Beauty in the Struggle both musically and lyrically. It sums up what this record is about and what it took to make this album a reality. It’s about taking the approach of looking at things as the glass half full instead of half empty.” At times when it seems as if the world is trying to convince us that our glasses are half empty, Shane Henry’s heading out into that world with melodies that infuse optimism and honesty--one venue at a time.

Bon Voyage!

Summer Vacations and What to Pack Although some seem to dread the humid and hot summer days of Oklahoma, we always find one nice thing about summer…the vacation! Whether going to Colorado or Hawaii, preparing for travel can seem like a hassle especially when you do not have a clue as to what to wear or how to start packing. One thing that is great about summer-wear is a lot of it is light cotton or wrinkle free, which is something great for packing. Dresses are great for travel. They are easy, cute, and simple! When trying to pick a dress, remember to pick something that won’t wrinkle much, pick one with a good length depending on your destination, and one with color or patterns! Depending on your destination, you might want to pack a swimsuit or a swimsuit cover! There are so many swimsuits to choose from. Choose one that compliments your body and you feel great in! Swimsuit covers are the same way! Choose a cover up that is see through, terry cloth, or even a long tank will do! Rompers are another great item to take on your trip. Like dresses, they are easy and so comfortable, and they work as a great substitute for shorts with a lot of tops. Rompers can be found in casual styles and more dressy styles in case you want to go to a nice dinner while out on your summer vacation. Another option instead of a romper is a pair or shorts and a top. Shorts can be in all lengths: Bermuda shorts, boyfriend shorts, jean shorts, and many others. One pair of shorts can be paired easily with 2 completely different tops to create a dressy look or a casual look. One thing I always consider before packing is what shoes I am bringing. One pair of nice shoes and a pair of casual shoes do the trick! Accessorize your clothing after you have picked it out, and minimize what you bring. Pack light. Pack your style and personality, just not your entire wardrobe.

The Mind...

So6ixJuly2010 By: Bryan Crump

of Travel and Success Travel can save your life and open your mind to realities, solutions, and possibilities that may have seemed impossible before. Taking a road trip can be good for taking a break from the usual routine, relaxation, and learning. It keeps you from growing stagnant, and it provides you with the opportunity to develop, to be more progressive, and to advance beyond your current situation. You can inform yourself with what is going on in the world. I recently returned from a trip to California where I met with many business colleagues, artists, and professionals and learned new techniques that will stay with me forever. You can do this too, in whatever endeavor you may be pursuing. Travel allows you to meet others with like minds and experience beyond your own, and you can always learn from that. In every part of the world there are business conventions, summits, conferences, classes, and workshops on success, marketing, and more fields of business than you can imagine. Get on the internet and see what is going on in your hometown and neighboring cities. Bring information back to your community. When you share in your story of travel and things you have learned, you help to stimulate better change in the community and be an informative influence at the same time. Get involved. Every location has different things to offer, new ways of thinking, people of different talents and skills, culture, and a resource for networking. Traveling can help you to appreciate where you come from. Not only can you bring things back, but you can also provide useful information, skills,

26

and techniques to help others in your travels as well. What you see is what you get, so the more you see, the more you are aware of and in essence the more you have. Take time to see what is in the world beyond your own perspective and grow everyday. Every step moves you in a direction; where are you going? If you don’t have a plan, then you might stumble and get lost, but you can always find your way if you look hard enough. Just like building up yourself for successful goals, the same applies for travel; if you have a map, you know where you are going. It is better to be focused and to have a goal and plan than it is to be unfocused, cluttered, and chaotic. If being random is part of your creativity, that is fine, but make sure you are balanced. You should always have focus and know when being random is appropriate. Brainstorming is a perfect time for random ideas. As stated before, when you visit other places, you can see what works for others and what does not. Now is the time to open your mind to the world like never before. Inform yourself, meet new people, and grow.

great shopping and restaurants, to great concerts at the BOK Center. You can take in a game with the new WNBA team the Tulsa Shock, or a ballgame at the new ONEOK Field. Stop in at the Tulsa Hard Rock Hotel and Casino for a night of fun and entertainment. July and August are some of the hottest months for the state of Oklahoma, a trip to the Alabaster Caverns State Park in Woodward might be a good tourist destination to visit. A walking tour through the 59-degree (year-round) caverns is a great way to beat the summer heat. Or, you and your family can cool off at any one of the many great lakes, swim beaches and water parks in all regions of the state. For those of you who enjoy History, Oklahoma has a variety of museums, from studying dinosaur history at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History to Western History at the Oklahoma Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum; there is a museum for everyone. Oklahoma has many historic sites for you to enjoy. The Washita Battlefield Historic Site is a site along the Washita River where Lt. Col. George A. Vacation OK: Continued Peace Chief Black Kettle on November 27, 1868. Guided tours are available. The town of Guthrie is a historic site of its own. There are over 2,000 buildings covering 1,400 acres on the National Registry of Historic Places. Visitors can step back in time and enjoy a great piece of Oklahoma’s history. There are plenty of sites to see along with museums to enjoy while in Guthrie, take in a show at the Pollard Theater, lunch at Stables Restaurant, or a carriage ride through the town. If you are more of the outdoors type, Oklahoma has more than 200 lakes to enjoy fishing, water skiing, camping and boating. Roman Nose State Park is about an hour and a half from Oklahoma City, located seven miles north of Watonga; it has the states only canyon-style golf course. Tourists can enjoy the golf course, horseback riding, tennis, boating, hayrides and much more at this great state park. The South side of Lake Thunderbird has a new camping area open and a marina that was untouched by the recent tornadoes that hit the North side of the lake. “People can get to the lake on the Highway 9 side, we also have a newly renovated campground with state of the art facilities now open to the public,” Hardy Watkins, Executive Director for the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department said. “One of the things we are working to accomplish for those in the Oklahoma City and surrounding areas to understand is that they can have a great getaway in Oklahoma City and do some things that they haven’t done in awhile,” Watkins said. “They might rent a hotel room in Bricktown or downtown, and take in a ballgame, take in the riverfront, go to a museum, go to the Harkins Theater, or bowling at the Red Pin Lounge.” Oklahoma has so much to offer when it comes to vacation getaways on a budget. For more information and travel ideas visit www.travelok.com. Special thanks to Hardy Watkins and the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department for their time in helping writing this piece.

6 Summer Destinations

When planning a summer vacation, you should consider various factors, such as location, activities, budget and climate. Here are 6ix summer hot spots to think about as the season rolls on and the time to take a break gets closer.

structures such as palaces and cathedrals built hundreds of years ago or artistic creations housed in magnificent museums. And there’s a plethora of natural beauty too from the Swiss Alps to the German Black Forest to the beaches of Holland.

4. Washington, D.C.

1. Las Vegas, NV

Las Vegas is easily one of the most wellknown vacation spots in the world. Gambling, concerts, and clubs create the unbeatable night-life of “sin-city”. And the high-class shopping, spectacular spas, and fine dining make for a perfect day. Everyone should visit the Las Vegas strip at least once in their lives.

Like Vegas, D.C. is a must do for every American. From historical monuments, memorials, art, and architecture to fine restaurants, dazzling shops, and famous hotels, D.C. is a perfect summer spot. Not to mention a chance to tour the White House and have a glimpse of the site from where U.S. presidents have directed our nation.

5. New York, NY

2. Cancun, Mexico

A coastal city in Mexico that is frequented by spring-break enthusiasts and summer vacation fiends every year. Travel time to this destination, especially departing from Oklahoma, is quick and easy. The beaches are beautiful, and the entertainment is insane. Add to the mix luxury hotels, swimming with dolphins, boating, malls, and theme parks. Splendid summer getaway!

Take this from a guy who grew up in the state of New York. Visiting New York City is the place to go! Sky-scrapers towering above and streets below teeming with activity. Times Square, Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building…you name it.! And if you need a break from the hubbub of city life, check out Lake Ontario or Niagara Falls.

6. Hawaii

3. Euro

You can hardly go wrong with a trip to Europe. Whether you visit Rome, Paris, Berlin or buy a Eurorail Pass and go for a mix of cities, the experience will be life changing. The history afforded to travelers is awe-inspiring; you can view architectural

A list of summer hot spots would not be complete without Hawaii. The only state to be made up entirely of islands gives you just what you need: Island life. Beachside resorts, unparalleled local cuisine, and an eye-opening landscape. Tour the volcanic activity, go surfing, go fishing, tour the jungles, attend a luau, or just unwind on a beach. Hawaii is a favorite of many for a good reason!

The Botox Breast Lift In keeping with our culture’s obsession with youth, beauty, and fitness, it comes as little surprise that non-traditional approaches to solving cosmetic problems would become increasingly common. For women in their late 20s and beyond, particularly those who have had children, sagging breasts is a common cosmetic problem. Some women accept this change in body form as a rite of womanhood. Others look to surgery for augmentation, lift, or other enhancement. And for some women, any way to achieve the effect of surgery without having to undergo surgery is a better option. This demand has paved the way for the use of Botox in Breast lifting. Botox? Yes, Botox. The same Botox used in the removal of fine lines and wrinkles between the brow, “crows feet” around the eyes, and forehead wrinkles. When used in the normal indicated manner, Botox, a powerful purified toxin secreted by a bacterial organism, is injected specifically in the areas where the wrinkles form by dynamic motion of the muscles. The toxin deactivates the endings of nerves which stimulate muscle cell contraction. In so doing, the wrinkles cannot form in the area where the Botox was injected, and thus muscle cell cannot be stimulated. In time, the nerve endings send out new branches which later connect with new areas on the muscle surface, in a process which takes about 3-4 months, i.e. the interval of time between needing Botox injections again. It is not a “wrinkling” phenomenon that leads to breast sagging. It is the alteration of the balance of muscles which support the breast in the Botox breast lift. If the balance is shifted towards the muscles, which pull up rather than depress the chest wall torso and shoulder girdle, the result can be an apparent lift of the breasts, a lift that can mimic a surgical breast lift. The procedure works like this: powdered, purified Botox is reconstituted in a small volume of sterile saline solution. Small amounts are withdrawn in to a

syringe. Injections are delivered at multiple locations in a semicircular pattern above the breast in the pectoralis minor muscle and underneath the breast. Just as with any Botox procedure for facial wrinkles, no effect is seen until about 4 to 5 days. After that time, the muscles of the shoulder girdle and back develop a balance advantage over the frontal muscles which function to depress the breast. The result is breast elevation. The posture is also elevated. The lift effect is typically on the order of 1.5 cm. Although very elegant and simple in its design and application, the Botox breast lift does have its shortcomings. First, the amount of Botox required to achieve the lift effecting may easily exceed 200 units, which is approximately $2400. The lifting effect is only capable of lasting 3 to 4 months, which makes the cost of maintenance prohibitive for many people. Not all breast sizes or types apparently respond effectively to the Botox Breast lift. Very small breasts can do well. Large, pendulous breast tend not to do well. Also, injecting relatively large amounts of a nerve toxin into the area where there are vital organs is probably, for most people, not worth the risks. The America Society of Plastic Surgeons does not recommend the Botox Breast Lift. A poll of Medical Spas in the OKC area could turn up not a single practitioner who offers the Botox Breast Lift. One may have to travel as far as New York and California to have this procedure done. You can find out more about this topic at Body-bloggin.blogspot.com, the Official Blog of BodyTrends.
