L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F
Six years ago, I sat down with our team and told them I wanted to do something crazy. You see, at that time I had been producing a small college-focused piece called College Crowd Magazine. I had started College Crowd Magazine in the fall of 2007, when I was finishing up at UCO. I knew then that there was a huge need and want for such a product. College Crowd Magazine was a big success and very popular on all the Oklahoma campuses. So when I sat down six years ago, I told the team I wanted to change up the magazine: I wanted to go big with it. I had a very ambitious goal in mind. I wanted to make a magazine that didn’t just focus on college kids, but catered to everyone, and instead of just putting it out on college campuses, I wanted it to be available everywhere else, too. So we came up with So6ix. The very meaning of the name is “everyone.” By combining the words “social” and “mix,” we could make a monthly publication that covers everything local to our city – to reach everyone, no matter the person’s social scene, gender or ethnicity. We then proceeded to flood the city with 100,000 magazines for our release in August of 2009.
Now here we are six years later, and So6ix has made another big leap. For this issue, which is dated exactly six years from the first issue of So6ix, we have expanded the magazine to bring you the greatest product possible. We have been working on this tirelessly for months now, and are extremely thrilled and beyond proud to bring you this new product. We are very thankful for six years of tremendous support from our great city. To everyone who has continually picked up the magazine each month, to the businesses who support our work to make this free for everyone, and to our amazing family and friends, we love you all and want to say thank you for supporting us in all our efforts to make the best magazine we can and the best source for everything our great city has to offer. We hope you enjoy our Six-Year Anniversary Issue!
The last six years have been phenomenal. We have put on countless events. We’ve done photo shoots with Thunder players, news anchors, Miss Oklahoma winners, and local celebrities, and we’ve worked with hundreds of amazing business owners to support them and help them grow. We have also seen our company grow in other areas: we’ve done such work as producing TV commercials, building websites, providing text mobile services, and releasing our own cutting-edge mobile application.

Food
Truckin' PHOTOGRAPHY: LAUREN WRIGHT
It’s easy to fall in love with the latest craze across the nation: food trucks. For the last year or so, food trucks have become increasingly popular among all ages and in all areas, not just the “trendy” spots. There’s just something about food being mobile, homemade and cooked to order in front of you. These owners and workers put in long hours and hard work to satisfy massive groups of people with quality food. Food trucks are quickly becoming a staple of summer, and we love it. Walk, bike or drive to one of these food trucks near you.
Twist Gourmet Pretzels Pretzels: a long-time favorite and staple in many homes. A soft homemade pretzel topped with truffle Parmesan, mozzarella cheese and basil, or spinach and artichoke dip, served from a food truck by two great people? An instant favorite! Twist Pretzels is serving up pretzels in delicious ways you would probably have never imagined. These creative pretzel variations will rock your pretzel world! Lance and Becky King, a duo that started out as a baker for Café 501 and a graphic designer for education software, found their love for making pretzels one birthday, and voilà, the pretzel bakery was born. These traditional Bavarian-style pretzels are 100% vegetarian and 100% delicious. Lance and Becky hope to eventually find the perfect kitchen space to expand in, so they can produce more of these tasty treats, due to such high demand (which is no surprise!). We tasted the Chuck (cheddar and jalapeño) and the Margarita Flat Tire, and they were oh-so-delicious. We also recommend you try the bread pudding, made with pretzels and vanilla cream sauce, topped with a berry compote. They love to keep it interesting with the pretzels, which will keep us coming back for more!

Snow S’more Snow S’more is my newest obsession, and there’s no other way of putting it. 1) If you stop by this food truck, the owners, Alison and Leo, will probably become your new best friends, because they are just that awesome, and 2) you’ll only want to eat Snow S’mores for every meal the rest of your life, seriously. Snow S’more is whipping up delicious s’mores unlike any other you’ve tasted. They make the graham crackers and marshmallows from scratch, and they use flavor variations of local Bedre Chocolate, all served out of a custom-designed Airstream. It doesn’t get much more awesome than that! You’ll find s’more combinations like the Elvis: graham cracker, milk chocolate, peanut butter, bacon and marshmallow, and the Curious George (a best seller): graham cracker, almond chocolate, almond butter, banana and marshmallow. You can add to a classic s’more tasty treats like bacon, Nutella and raspberries. Gluten-free? You’re in luck! They offer a gluten-free graham cracker to accompany these amazing ingredients. They’re S’MORE (see what we did there?) than just a s’more truck, they offer shaved ice and craft coffee, too. We’ll take 47 s’mores, please.

I can’t think of a better summer treat than Katiebug’s. Pulling up to this trailer will make your heart melt into a puddle… it’s the cutest thing ever! A mom and daughter duo are whipping up delicious shaved ice treats handcrafted from homemade organic cane sugar syrups, fresh fruit, teas and local herbs: real ingredients that are REAL good. These all-natural shaved ice treats come in so many flavors, like blueberry hibiscus, coconut chai, cobblers (blackberry, blueberry, cherry and peach), habanero lime, mint, sweet tea and so many more. If they recommend you try it topped with sweet cream, listen to these ladies! It’s so yum. We tasted the hibiscus pineapple. It was extremely refreshing and summery! Perfect shaved ice is important when making a snow cone, and Katiebug’s ice is perfectly fluffy and airy. Don’t let summer pass you by without enjoying Katiebug’s.

The Loaded Bowl In a state that prides itself on “meat and potatoes,” being vegan in Oklahoma isn’t always the easiest. The Loaded Bowl set out to make vegan food accessible, desirable and affordable for everyone. Sure, it may take a little more thought and creativity, but they’ve proved you can make just about any traditional meal vegan. Being gluten-free myself, I understand the world of restricted eating and was excited to see a truck offering such healthy and environmentally friendly foods, like vegan mac and cheese and lasagna, with a few gluten-free options in there, too! For you skeptics out there, The Loaded Bowl will prove vegan food can smell, look and taste delicious – it’s not just a myth. I was impressed by the quality of food being delivered by The Loaded Bowl. Just a heads up: they pride themselves on their cashew mac and cheese, and they should, because it’s one of the best in the country – yes, country! While The Loaded Bowl is dishing out delicious vegan food, they are also a meal planning business. They offer premade meals in reusable glass containers for those who are busy on the go, don’t feel like cooking or just can’t get enough of The Loaded Bowl. We sure can’t! WWW

MOB Grill Coming from a long line of family in the food business, it was almost inevitable that Marco Morrow would dive into the food world himself. MOB Grill, standing for Marco’s Onion Burger, is the real deal. It’s so simple, yet so delicious. Something about the combination of marinated, caramelized onions on a juicy cheeseburger with a side of crispy twice-fried French fries just makes you happy! This is quality food with top-notch taste. This close group of friends and family are putting in long hours and a lot of preparation on the MOB Grill truck, but it’s worth it when customers are saying, “This is the best burger and fries I have ever had!” They’ve converted three vegans – watch out, Loaded Bowl! The menu is extremely simple, but you can’t go wrong with any of the choices. Your taste buds will be thanking you. Someday MOB Grill hopes to open a brick-and-mortar store (yay!). Until then, we’ll keep coming back to this tailgate on wheels. P.S.: Try the cheese on your fries, just trust us. WWW

Smokin’ Greens
Before we go any further, I’m just going to start off by saying the Maui Waui Jalapeños are one of the greatest things I’ve ever tasted. And honestly, this is coming from someone who could eat cream cheese out of the container with a spoon all day long. The combination of Anaheim peppers stuffed with cream cheese, bacon and pineapple and then charcoaled is one of the most amazing combinations since mac and cheese. Hats off to you, Smokin’ Greens. Obviously, we love Smokin’ Greens (no pun intended)! It’s refreshing to find a truck that serves healthy options but with no lack of flavor. Every dish is packed with healthy vitamins and nutrients while being low in saturated fats, preservatives and sugars. All of the grilled ingredients are cooked over charcoal on a Japanese konro grill, giving a delicious char to ingredients like chicken and pineapple. We love the healthy options and we are officially hooked! Levi Schmidt, owner and manager, has something special going here with Smokin’ Greens, and we know this is only the beginning for this tasty truck. WWW

The Hall’s Pizza Kitchen Pizza is one of those foods that you can’t really go wrong with. It almost always sounds delicious, and there are so many different flavorful topping options and styles of crusts, so it’s no surprise pizza is one of the world’s most favorite foods. With that being said, Hall’s Pizza might be one of my new favorites. What started as a family tradition of Saturday night pizza for the Halls eventually made its way into the food truck world, and we are so thankful it did! In my opinion, wood-fired pizza is one of the best ways to eat it. The crust is just … MMM. The Halls’ daughters are two of the sweetest girls, and they sure know how to make a pizza. They don’t stop there: you can try delicious salads, cookies and drinks, too!

Phill Me Up Cheesesteaks Give me all of the Philly cheesesteaks in the world, and I could die happy. Okay, maybe that is a little dramatic, but these Phill Me Up cheesesteaks are really delicious. EATS Rich in history and in flavor, The Coach House has been serving up perfect food for almost thirty years. They’re soon to celebrate their 30th anniversary, come November. When you walk into warm, inviting space of The Coach House, there’s an overwhelming sense of history. This is a spot that has been the background for numerous memories over the years: celebrity diners, wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners, wine room dinners of great prestige, first dates, and anniversaries. Through the longtime leadership and partownership of world-renowned chef Kurt Fleischfresser, The Coach House has been propelled into excellence. Now, Chef David Henry (trained by Kurt) is using his immense talents in the kitchen to whip up deliciousness. One of my favorite things about The Coach House is that the dishes aren’t only innovative and full of flavor, but they are like a work of art to look at. My mom always taught me growing up that presentation is so important, and in the food world that could not be truer. These dishes are plated and presented with artistic character. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about everything, from where the food comes from to how it’s prepared, to what wines would be perfectly paired with your meal. It’s important when dining that your questions are answered, and they always do just that. The Coach House has something for everyone’s tastes, and it’s not just a place suited for fancy once-a-year occasions. This is a place where you can soak up our city’s rich history, enjoy a light lunch without making reservations, or try something new that isn’t in your everyday comfort zone. Fun fact: many of The Coach House’s ingredients come from local sources, making this an extremely eat-local-friendly restaurant. Every single dish contains layers and layers of flavors married together for perfection. We can’t wait to go back and continue to try the seasonal creations of Chef David Henry, as we celebrate this landmark of thirty years.

Hot melts and cold beer, that’s what The Mule prides itself on. Located in the heart of the Plaza District, this local spot is serving up amazing sandwiches with some not-so-common sandwich ingredients. For example, you’ll find fig puree, pecan smoked bacon, pear, cashew cheese, and more on their menu…and guess what, we love it! This is a great place for getting together with friends for a drink after work, or for the entire family on a Saturday afternoon before taking a stroll through the Plaza. They offer a taste of deliciousness for everyone. Be sure to check out the extensive beer menu, you beer connoisseurs. We recommend you try the Macaroni Pony: jalapeño cornbread, chipotle BBQ pulled pork, 3-cheese mac and cheese, and pickles, or their sweet treat, the Grand Lake Monte Cristo: white bread, peanut butter, raspberry preserves and dark chocolate with a heaping scoop of Roxy’s salted caramel ice cream…yum!
Broadway 10 has a new little brother, and we can’t get enough of it. Sidecar is the quaintest neighborhood bar in Automobile Alley. This spot has an original full-length glass garage door that opens to outdoor seating for a great view of Automobile Alley year-round. Not only do they have amazing drink options and an extensive list at that, they offer wine on tap – yes, tap! Like wines from the barrel in a vineyard, storing their reds and whites on tap keeps them from exposure to light, giving their wines a richer taste without the stuffiness. With great convenience to downtown, midtown and Bricktown businesses, Sidecar is the perfect place for meeting friends or your loved one to celebrate a successful day at work. During these warm-weather months, take full advantage of the outdoor seating and soak up the sunshine.

Located on the western edge of historic Campus Corner in Norman, Blackbird Gastropub opened its doors over four years ago and is a favorite of students and residents alike. Blackbird is known for their great menu as well as a dynamic bar. They also often host events like whiskey and wine tastings for the public to enjoy. This spot has delicious and intriguing options, like spinach and artichoke pot stickers and pot roast sliders on ciabatta rolls with truffle oil mash and fried onions. If you’re looking for a lighter option, try the honey smoked salmon salad in a blue cheese vinaigrette with dried cranberries, with walnuts, apples and parmesan. Enjoy the extensive scotch and whiskey list and a cigar in the Bird’s Nest, a second-story area of Blackbird’s equipped with couches and a warm atmosphere.
A true taste of Italian food right here in Oklahoma City, Papa Dio’s is serving up the real deal. This classic spot is run by Bill Bonadio, both owner and chef. One of the many great things about Papa Dio’s is that they offer two different sides to the restaurant. They have a casual or family side for a quick stop after a soccer game or meeting up on the way home from work. They also offer the Wine Bar side, which is more upscale but offers the same casual dining prices. Love lots of options? Then this spot is for you: It has over 160 menu items that range from imported pasta, to shrimp, and even fried pizza. Papa Dio’s offers five different types of lasagna. FIVE! We recommend you give the lobster ravioli a try, the original fried pizza, or a pasta with Trieste sauce (combination of alfredo, pesto and red sauce!). Looking for something new to do in the city? Papa Dio’s does Wine Dinners, which offer delicious wines married with special courses for a tasty experience.

A step into Dust Bowl is a step back into the good times of the 1970s. This quaint bowling alley in the heart of the ever-growing Midtown district hosts 12 lanes. Its retro-feel space is equipped with a lounge, a full-service bar and a VIP room with two to four lanes. What makes this place even better? Fassler Hall is just a quick hop upstairs, so before or after you bowl you can enjoy the expansive beer garden and German food favorites. This place is anything but your typical bowling alley, and that’s all the more reason we love it.

PACKARD’S ROOFTOP
201 N.W. 10th St., OKC, OK 73103 405.605.3771 Rooftops are taking over from patios as the next craze, and this may just be one of our favorites in the city. With an amazing view of the city skyline and the beloved twinkly lights, it’s picture perfect. Thankfully, Packard’s thought to equip the rooftop with a bar, and the bartender serves up tasty cocktails to enjoy with your friends after a long day at work. Sit atop this rooftop on any given day and soak up the views of our great city and its incomparable sunsets.
THE PATRIARCH CRAFT BEER HOUSE & LAWN
9 E. Edwards St., Edmond, OK 73034 405.285.6670 Edmondites rejoice! We finally have a “trendy” spot to hang out at and enjoy the warm summer months. Don’t get us wrong, we’re so happy for the growth of Midtown, Downtown and other districts, but it’s time that Edmond received a place of its own. The Patriarch is a renovated 1900s home that has been turned into an all-American craft beer car, with 48 taps flowing with the finest local and national brews. The house has kept its 111-year-old charm, and has been combined with a wonderful outdoor space and equipped with string lights, large tables, and spots for food trucks to serve up their deliciousness. Enjoy a glass of liquid America in the great outdoors of Edmond. P.S.: Bring your puppy!
THE MULE
1630 N Blackwelder Ave., OKC, OK 73106 405.601.1400 Hot melts and cold beer, we’re in! The Mule is one of those spots where you read some of their creations with a “hmm,” quickly followed by a “yum!” The Mule is a sandwich pioneer of sorts, with creations with cashew cheese, pears or eggs sunny-side-up, as well as jalapeño cornbread. We love the atmosphere, we love the food presentation, and we love its spot in the Plaza District. It’s a great spot for an after-work drink from their extensive beer list, a Saturday lunch with your love, or a Sunday brunch with your favorite friends.

PIE JUNKIE
1711 NW 16th St., OKC, OK 73106
405.605.8767
Owners – or as we like to call them, geniuses – Leslie and Darcy knew what they were doing when they opened up a pie shop. Even if you’re not the biggest fan of pie, if you take a bite from one of theirs, you’ll quickly become a pie junkie – we’re just warning you. They’re whipping up some of the classic favorites, but also creating masterpieces like drunken turtle, s’more, and bird dog buttermilk. There are many restaurants that are exclusive to one type of food, but a pie eatery might just be our favorite. This quaint little bakery is doing their best to keep up with demand, but they do run out of pie, so be sure to make an early stop to this one. Pie Junkie will easily give your grandma a run for her money!

With four different room themes to try, and one room only having a 9% escape rate, you’re in for an exciting challenge. Do you think you have the smarts for solving puzzles and cracking codes? Let’s see if you can escape.
INDUSTRY FLEA
10th & Hudson
Industry Flea is the newest location to step into the city’s monthly rotation of festivals and marketplaces. This open-air market of artisans, shops and vintage finds runs the last weekend of the month from March until September. Industry Flea is the sister event to The Holiday Pop-Up Shops, and we love it. It’s nice to not have to wait an entire year for the holidays to search and shop for great finds. It’s extremely casual and family friendly, and located in the heart of Midtown. A must-see!

WAFFLE CHAMPION 1212 N Walker Ave., #100, OKC, OK 73107
405.525.9235
Waffle heaven – oh wait, we mean Waffle Champion! This spot is the champion of the waffles, for sure. They’re serving up waffles more ways than we can count, and this place is a favorite in our books. But wait, it gets better. Not feeling the waffle? Any of the waffles and toppings can be deconstructed on a bed of waffle fries. Can this be real? Yes, yes it is! Located in the heart of Midtown, it’s the perfect spot for breakfast, brunch or lunch. We chose Waffle Champion as one of our favorites for the amazing atmosphere, unbelievably delicious eats, and perfect location (and maybe also because they serve mimosas). so6ix.com | AUGUST 2015

POPS
660 OK-66, Arcadia, OK 73007 405.233.2020 Located on historic Route 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma, Pops is a must-stop spot, whether you’re traveling through on vacation or live just a hop, skip and a jump away over in Edmond. The award-winning architecture of the 66-foot-tall giant pop bottle and building itself are a sight to see, with the pop bottle lighting up during the nighttime hours. Walk inside and you can take a seat at the old-school soda counter to have a hand-dipped ice cream milkshake, enjoy a classic burger, and of course try one of the over 600 different soda options. You’ll find flavors that range from the classics, like root beer and cream soda, to obscure tastes like ranch, bacon, jelly bean and fudge brownie soda. Pops is truly an adventure for all ages. so6ix.com | AUGUST 2015

MYRIAD GARDENS
301 W. Reno Ave., OKC, OK 73102 405.445.7080
We could honestly write a book on the all of the things we love that are happening at the Myriad Gardens. Over the last few years, the Myriad Gardens have really come alive through their remodel of the grounds and the addition of dozens of daily, weekly and monthly events. The gardens host live music on the Myriad Great Lawn, weekly summer movies presented by Sonic, starting at sundown on the big screen, and weekly walk-ups for the kids, like Make-It Mondays and Tasty Tuesdays. Truly, the list could go on and on. Enjoy an icy cold handcrafted shake at Ice House and cool off with a stroll through the splash pad, or keep it simple by bringing your favorite read and enjoying a sit on a quiet bench underneath the breezy trees. It’s a spot for all ages, and it should definitely be utilized while the weather allows.

COOLGREENS
Nichols Hills | North May | Norman | Edmond | Downtown OKC Being healthy is a lifestyle, and Coolgreens is doing everything it can to make this lifestyle as easy as possible. By refusing to have any processed foods or trans-fat items on the menu, Coolgreens makes our healthy decisions that much easier. You won’t find anything fried or microwaved here; instead, you’ll find many local ingredients and dishes packed with nutrients and antioxidants and full of immense flavor. We have very few places with truly clean dining-out options, and that gives us all the more reason to love Coolgreens.
BLEU GARTEN
301 N.W. 10th St., OKC, OK 73103 We can’t give Bleu Garten enough love. Finally, Oklahoma City has a spot like all of the other trendy big cities, like Austin, Dallas, Portland and San Francisco. It’s refreshing to see a food truck park in our city bringing friends and family together under the Oklahoma sky, day and night. Food trucks of all sorts stop by here for lunch, dinner or both, and Bleu Garten has a full-service bar to accompany your eats. Bleu Garten doesn’t stop at just drinks and eats: they offer clean restrooms (hallelujah!), shaded seating, misters, heaters, music, theater entertainment and games like corn hole and giant Jenga. We recommend you make some summertime memories here.

THE WEDGE PIZZERIA 4709 N. Western Ave., OKC, OK 73118 405.602.3477
You probably know by now that wood-fired pizza is our favorite, because we’ve only mentioned it approximately 47 times – give or take. The Wedge pioneered wood-fired pizzas in Oklahoma City, as they were the first to offer it here! Lucky for us, they now have two locations. We still love the original spot and its quaintness: it has no more than 20 tabletops and a cute backyard patio. We love the fresh ingredients and authentic Italian offerings, like prosciutto-wrapped pears with goat cheese, and the perfect Margherita pizza. Definitely end dinner with their homemade gelato. It’s hard not to love this true taste of Italy in our own backyards.

Whether you’re experienced and licensed, or like me, not really sure what you’re doing but you know you want to try it, Wilshire Gun is a great entertainment and educational destination. They offer courses and training, or if you’re just coming for fun, you can shoot a few rounds and then enjoy a drink and a bite to eat at the Range Café. Looking for more fellowship? You can join their Caliber Club to get access to exclusivities like their private hangout spot, equipped with a full bar and humidor room. Wilshire Gun is unique and modern, and we love it.

Made with Oklahoma love, and you sure can taste it. The PB&J isn’t your traditional sack lunch find, but it will give it a run for its money, that’s for sure. Smoked pork, brisket and sausage piled high and topped with creamy slaw for a match made in heaven. Try the homemade sauces!

FLAT TIDE SURF: SUP
Approximately 3901 E. Overholser Dr., Bethany, OK 73008 I’m pretty sure we have a new obsession. Located on the northeastern parts of Lake Overholser sits Flat Tide Surf, the mobile stand-up paddle boarding company. If you’ve never done it before, think surfing meets kayaking, with much less speed. It’s a whole lot easier than you think. Sure, it takes some muscles, and you can actually gain some by simply paddling around the lake, or by joining one of Flat Tide’s yoga or bootcamp classes that take place on the water and yes, ON the paddle boards. The view is stunning and serene as you paddle up the inlets of the North Canadian River and under the Route 66 bridge. You’ll find us here for a relaxing summer evening or when we need to get our workouts on. So basically, if you need us, we’ll be here.
DODGERS GAME
2 S. Mickey Mantle Dr., OKC, OK 73104 We cannot contain our excitement to finally have a minor-league baseball team that is affiliated to a prestigious team like the Los Angeles Dodgers. We chose the Dodgers as a must-see, must-do for the fact that it’s located in the heart of the city, and what’s better on a warm summer night than eating peanuts, having a cold drink and enjoying a classic baseball game with friends? It was very exciting to see a large crowd all clapping, yelling, singing along to the entertainment and casually strolling through the concourse. We are proud to be the OKC Dodgers
