Letter from the editor
FEBRUARY – the winter holidays have come and gone. Trees, ribbons, and lights galore are packed away; cakes, cookies, and candy have been replaced with fruits & vegetables and weight loss aspirations; New Year’s resolutions are either well under way to becoming habitual… or well under way to being tossed aside; and the cold chill of Oklahoma’s biting winter winds have swept in. While this outlook might appear slightly bleak, the advent of red and pink and hearts and chocolates and love-bedazzled looks of Valentine’s Day is at our doorstep. In this issue of So6ix we are turning our attention to love and romance with all things Wedding & Bridal. Peruse through our pages, and you will find information on the latest fashion trends for weddings, tips for stress-free wedding planning, ideas for a delightful honeymoon, suggestions for unique gifts, and more. Whether you are a future bride or groom, a member of a wedding party, or a wedding guest, helpful and interesting ideas are aplenty in the So6ix February issue.

Original Art...
for a Unique Wedding Gift Finding that perfect wedding gift for a close friend or family member isn’t easy. One idea guaranteed to be unique and memorable is to choose a piece of local, original art. Multiple choices exist in Oklahoma for beautiful works of art; one great option for finding just the right piece is a trip to Istvan Gallery. Istvan Gallery has just celebrated its third anniversary and added two-thousand feet of new show and studio space at 1218 N. Western in Oklahoma City. Artists Steven and Christina Kovash op-
erate and oversee the space they founded in 2007. It includes three studios, and the walls are filled with oriental watercolors on rice paper, photographs, jewelry, light sculptures, and hand-blown glass. The building was originally a furniture manufacturing warehouse, which makes it a perfect place to showcase art. You’d never know how large and roomy its interior is by just driving by. A figure that looks like it hobbled away from a Mexican Day of the Dead festival greets you in the front parking lot. For the winter holidays, it wore a Santa hat.

Original Art for a Unique Wedding Gift
When I walked into the back toward Blue Sage Studios, I was pretty sure I saw someone welding. What I actually beheld was glass being blown and polished by hand. Demonstrations are open to the public almost daily, and the most gorgeous glass art is for sale. There are dishes, avant-garde pieces, and bud vases available for purchase all over the workplace… perfect for wedding gifts. By the exit is a Mayan showcase. Small wooden carvings of animals are covered in colored beeswax. The result is as intricate and vibrant as the Native American beadwork Oklahomans know and love so well. Printmakers and crafters of furniture also show work here. The galleries host poetry readings, art meetings, and private events. Perhaps most fun are the “story slams.” Past themes of this open-

Back in November, Istvan was the place to be for the hottest watch-party in town for Andrew Rice and Al McAffrey. Founder Steven Kovash knows Oklahoma City is a cultural hot spot of the southwest, and he wants to spread the word. His goal is to foster a network of local artists who can motivate one another to move forward professionally and creatively. He wants everyone in the city to know an honest-to-goodness artist and to be personally invited to an opening. To that end, potluck dinners are hosted monthly at the gallery. Come one, come all. Bring your favorite dish…and dish about the local art scene. Ice and sodas are provided. You are welcome to bring a beverage of your choice, adult or other. Friend Istvan Gallery on FaceBook to be kept abreast of coming openings and events and to see photographs of art currently hanging in the galleries and studio spaces. A True Love Marriage Wedding season is approaching, and love is filling the air. Whether it’s because of all the weddings, Valentine’s Day, or wrapping up the holiday season, for some reason, everyone is focused on finding “true love.” But since the theme this month is centered on weddings and bridal, let’s talk about that old, popular Bible passage about marriage that seems to be read at almost every wedding ceremony. Well your choices are really limited, so you probably guessed it…Ephesians 5. The reason I’m going to talk about this is because it is probably the most misunderstood but most powerful and beautiful pictures of marriage that you can find. I’ll explain why in this article. “Wives, be subject to your own husbands…for the husband is the head of the wife…Husbands, love your wives.” This is what most people get from the passage that is read at a wedding ceremony. Sounds pretty lopsided doesn’t it? Sounds like the wives are inferior to the husband and that the husband has all the power in a marriage and has it easy. Well it should sound that way if that is all you are paying attention to, but here is what the full passage says: “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body (the church). But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives. Just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:22-25) That’s a lot different from what was quoted earlier. But what makes it different? Why is it so powerful and beautiful? And most of all, why is it so commonly misunderstood? Whether you are religious or not, this passage has a lot of truth about true love. Why do you think it is read at so many weddings? But what is the real picture being painted by the reading of this passage? I’ll explain.
12 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com
The reason it is so misunderstood is because it sounds as if the man has all the power in the relationship (being the “head”) and the wife is to submit to him. It also sounds like the man has it easy: “love your wives.” There’s no submission. But reread the whole passage. The wives are to be subject to their husbands “as to the Lord.” In Christianity, this is referring to the church being subject to God (giving up completely of themselves to serve the Lord). That part is easy to see, but what about the husband? The husband is to love his wife as “Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” Again, whether religious or not, everyone has heard of Jesus dying on the cross to save the church. Wow! That means He sacrificed Himself for the church, and that is how husbands are to love their wives! Husbands are to completely give up of themselves for her, the same way as the wives are giving up of themselves for the husband. If you ask me, that looks like a pretty powerful and beautiful picture of what marriage and true love is really about…giving yourselves up for each other. It is a selfless act for both the husband and the wife! The next time you hear that passage read at either your wedding or someone else’s wedding, think about that truth. True love is giving up completely of yourself for someone else, and it’s not just the wives who need to do it, but even more, the husbands! Give yourselves up to one another completely, and true love will pour from your marriage!

Let Me Eat Cake
So6ixFebruary2011 By: Beth ANN Ruble Photography By: Clifton Roberts
Need a Wedding Cake? Look no further.
You and your guests will remember your wedding cake both in loving memories and photographs for years to come. Several local bakeries can make the cake of your dreams come to sweet fruition. Ruth Rickey, founder of Ruth’s Sweete Justice Bakery & Sugar Art Shoppe, has made a name for herself nationally and baked custom cakes for Toby Keith and Rod Stewart. Ruth doesn’t advertise; she doesn’t need to. She has been featured on The Food Network several times. Wedding and groom cakes are Ruth’s specialties, and she has a huge showroom devoted only to wedding cakes at 7602 N. May. Ruth travels the world to compete. She and her friend, Janet Rosebeary of Guthrie, just won the grand prize on the first WE TV Wedding Cake Wars. The competition was in Maryland, and the gals had three days to design and make a tiered wedding cake. They thrilled the judges with an African safari motif. In 2009 Ruth became one of only fourteen international ICES Certified Master Sugar Artists. The test requirements included a three tiered wedding cake, a
14 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com
single tier cake with butter cream icing, and a non-cake sugar piece. Ruth had only eight hours to complete these yummy labors of love, and she passed with flying colors. Completely self taught, Ruth has studied under numerous cakemasters of national renown. Best known for her gumpaste dolls and sugar painting, Mrs. Rickey crafts edible flowers so masterfully they’re often mistaken for actual blossoms. Ruth’s Sweete Justice Bakery has an excellent wedding brochure available online. She and her team can craft anything you desire from the traditional to artsy to modern. Bring her a photo if you have something specific in mind, and she’ll whip it right up. Three to four flavors and fillings will be ready for you to taste at your consult, and you are welcome to take leftovers home for family members

who couldn’t be there with you. Another delicious, local bakery is Raspberries ‘n Creme which started in a small shop on Western Avenue in 1981, moving to 2925 Lakeside Circle in 1996 where it has room to house the sumptuous Nikkellette’s Café. Nikkellete is a composite of the names of the owner’s three grandchildren, and every menu item is a recipe of her own creation. Raspberries ‘n Crème creates luscious, tiered wedding cakes. Each of these beauties are decorated with whipping cream and fresh flowers. For orders over $300.00, they will deliver. Mishelle Handy of Edmond is available

by appointment only at 405-348-5938. Her delectable artwork has appeared in Brides of Oklahoma magazine. Mishelle has some great advice on her website: Rule one? You can never go wrong with chocolate. And why not incorporate a design from your gown into the cake? She also suggests giving some of her custom cookies to your guests as gifts as they’re more unique and certainly tastier than another monogrammed matchbook. Most importantly, ask your baker for specific freezing instructions. It will make all the difference when you thaw it for that first anniversary celebration.

Forget Diamonds!
So6ixFebruary2011 By: DR. HARVEY JENKINS OWNER: BODY TRENDS
VIP BodySculpting is a Bride’s Best Friend The great thing and also the scariest thing about your wedding is that every minute of it will be documented on film. Each photo will be heavily scrutinized, not only by you immediately following your honeymoon, but within 10 years, by the harshest critics of all, your future children. Unlike many photos, your wedding pictures which capture one of the most important moments of your life will last forever. Withstanding the pressures involved in executing the perfect wedding is the hard part. Reducing inches rapidly in the places that count so that you look fabulous in your wedding gown is simple. VIP, a type of Bodysculpting technology, is your solution, and perhaps a solution for your bridesmaids and groom, for rapidly achieving a sleek physique, when you don’t have time to lose inches and pounds in a gym, and when you are not interested in visiting the plastic or cosmetic surgeon.
What is VIP BodySculpting?
VIP is a time-tested and revolutionary bodysculpting technology developed in Italy that utilizes E-stim or electrical stimulation. In a VIP treatment session, the client is placed on a massage table and several electrodes placed strategically over the body to provide series of deliberately forceful muscle contractions. The contractions, which are ‘concentric’ meaning that the contractions occur with muscle cell shortening with each contraction. The contractions are much stronger than what you can produce voluntarily, for example, like the ones you produce in the gym doing abdominal crunches or squats. A 45-minute session of the VIP bodysculpting treatment called Transion (pronounced tran-ZEE’-un) is analogous to doing about 1000 sit-ups or crunches in the gym, without the pain, lactic acid buildup, or sweating! You simply lay on the table, and the VIP machine does all of the work for you.
18 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com
In the first session, losing ½ inch to 4 inches is typical. With additional sessions spaced 2-3 days apart, more inches can be lost. And because the muscles develop “memory”, the individual muscle cell fibers become enlarged and have a higher resting-tone. As a consequence, the muscles become more metabolically active. When this occurs, the muscles increase the rate of metabolism of fat stores and excess body fat diminishes. For other body concerns, different VIP treatment types can be used for quick, painless, and noninvasive enhancement. Isogei (pronounced I-SO-jay) utilizes E-stim to produce isometric muscle contraction, which occurs without muscle shortening, rather than concentric muscle contraction as in the VIP Transion treatment. Isometric muscle contractions of the pectoral muscles of the chest or the gluteal muscles of the buttocks provide a ‘lifting effect” that is analogous to a ‘breast lift’ or ‘butt lift’ that a cosmetic surgeon might perform. The result will be a noticeable improvement in bust line and in the overall fitting of the wedding gown or tux.
When to Start VIP Bodysculpting?
You can begin VIP Bodysculpting at anytime. You can have a treatment 2 days prior to your wedding and still lose inches in time for the big day. You can start before you choose your wedding gown or as the gown is being made. If you can plan a full-series of treatments, you can invest on a treatment package to lose all of the necessary inches and pounds to achieve your ideal weight and body shape. VIP may be combined with other nonsurgical treatments including Laser Fat-melters (Zerona) and Laser skin-tighteners (Accent XL) to give the best cosmetic result. Bridal parties featuring VIP-treatment sessions in the week before a wedding is becoming a very popular pre-wedding bonding experience. It is also a great way for the

Investing in You
You have invested a great deal of time, energy and money in making your wedding the best moment of your life. Make sure you invest equally in yourself and the way you look. The most important thing is not the diamond. It is you! Don’t use the dress to cover your flaws. Correct them instead with the simplest way possible. And every picture of your wedding that memorializes the moment will be picture-perfect. Dr. Harvey Jenkins MD PhD is a Harvard-trained Orthopedic Spine Specialist practicing in South OKC. Choosing...
the Right Dress for Your Body Type When I look back on my wedding, I don’t remember much in detail. It was a busy day, and I obviously had a lot on my mind. I vaguely remember the cake. I can barely recollect who all was there. I don’t remember where we ordered our food from. But there is one thing I do remember very clearly – the dress. The dress is the headliner of the wedding, at least for the bride. It is one of the first things that we think about after we get that rock on our finger. However, as soon as you step foot in that dress store, everything you thought about dress shopping goes out the window. There are literally thousands of dresses at your fingertips, and you have no idea where to start. Suddenly, you find that you’re lost in this ambiguous sea of white and cream. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. Most dress stores today have websites with photo galleries of their dresses. Use them. Narrow down your search before getting to the store. That way, when you approach that sales lady, you can tell her exactly what you want. You are more likely to get the dress of your dreams, you know, THE dress. But where to begin? How do you narrow such a large selection down in the first place? The best way to accomplish this is to decide which dress shape most compliments your body type: If you have an hour-glass shape, pick either a two-piece dress or a dress that has a corset. This will accentuate your smaller waist while showing off your best assets. One thing to keep in mind for this dress shape is to choose a bouquet that will not overwhelm your dress. If you want to show off a small waistline, then don’t pick a big chunk of flowers that is going to hide your midsection as you carry it. Same rule applies to the veil. Something shorter that stops just below your shoulders is best. Women with pear-shaped bodies generally like to hide their hips and accentuate their bust. A-line dresses, or princess
Health & beauty
style, is best for this. The waist is tighter, emphasizing the torso and bust. Then from the hips the dress flares out, hiding the hips and balancing out the body. For this dress shape, longer veils elongate lines and make the body look sleeker. Drop waist or princess dresses flatter women with fuller waists. Drop waist dresses elongate the torso. Add some

So6ixHealth&Beauty
Continued from page 21
Choosing the Right Dress for Your Body Type heels and you’re even better off. Usually an up-do with a larger amount of jewelry pulls the focus to the top and away from the midsection. Fuller busted women have one goal: show off what they have without looking over-the-top. Corset dresses are great for this. There’s a reason that women have worn corsets for centuries; they make us look good. One thing to avoid though is a strapless dress. This isn’t to say that all strapless dresses wouldn’t work, but make sure the dress you decide on has a strap option, just in case. Wider-set straps help diminish the appearance of a large bust. If you’re shorter than the average woman, or just over-all petite, stick to the minimum. Don’t go with a huge ball gown dress. Mermaid dresses can tend to be a bit overwhelming as well. Thinner A-lines work best to elongate the frame. Stick with simpler jewelry and a
22 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com
So6ixFebruary2011 By: Jacqueline Larocco finger-tip veil. Don’t forget to add a pair of heels. If you’re on the other side of the spectrum, and you are taller than your groom, a mermaid dress can really contour your body and show off curves. The tight-fitting, flare style of the mermaid dress shows off hips and can make a tall woman look more proportional. However, A-line and princess dress shapes also work. Avoid empire dresses, because they can actually make you look taller and instead of flaunting your height, can make you look towering. If you go to your wedding planner or dress assistant with a dress shape in mind, it can make it significantly easier to choose a dress from the large selection. Don’t worry so much about color and embroidery at first. You initial goal is to find the dress shape that flaunts your body the best, and then you can get picky.

Breakfast Bake
Packed Full Wedding Planning Days? Try This Recipe. In preparation for an upcoming wedding and the multiple parties and events and appointments surrounding a wedding, it’s easy to forget some simple yet important daily routines… like breakfast. Breakfast is arguably the most important meal of the day, yet many of us don’t have the time to cook a good breakfast every morning. I mean, who wants to lose valuable sleep as a result of getting up early and making a mess in the kitchen? One of the best ways I have found to tackle this issue is to prepare a breakfast bake. What is a breakfast bake? It’s simple: throw some eggs, vegetables, and spices into a casserole dish and bake it. Make it big enough to last the whole week, and you’ll have a quick, healthy option for breakfast each day. There are tons of options for ingredients. Pick your favorites, and try them in a variety of combinations. I suggest making the bake on Sunday, in the afternoon or evening. This way you’ll have it available for the whole week. Here’s an idea to get you started, and you can add or delete ingredients as you wish:
add the onions, peppers, and asparagus. Sauté the veggies until they release some of their moisture or the onions turn clear. • Grab your 9” x 13” baking dish and coat the inside of it with butter or oil. This will make it easier to get the finished product out of the pan when you’re done. • Add the sautéed vegetables and pour the egg mixture over the top. • Bake in the oven at 350 degrees, some where between 30-60 minutes, de- pending on your oven and how many eggs and vegetables you used. Check the mixture as it cooks by shaking the pan. If the mixture jiggles, it’s not ready yet. Watch closely as it gets close to being done, as you don’t want to overcook the eggs. There will be some carry-over cooking inside the dish after you pull it from the oven, so be sure to take it out when the middle is just under being done. • Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before carving it up and placing it in your favorite travel-ready vessels. This is such a time-saver for me, and
• • • • • • • •
I’m sure it will help you too. Starting your day off with some protein and veggies will curb your blood sugar response as well, giving you ample energy for your busy day and leaving you feeling more satisfied until lunchtime rolls around.
9” x 13” baking dish 1-2 dozen eggs 4 strips bacon, cooked and cut into small slices 1 yellow and 1 red bell pepper, julienned ½ cup diced onion 1 bunch of asparagus tops, diced ¼ teaspoon black pepper ½ teaspoon each of salt, garlic powder and onion powder
Directions for cooking: • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. • In a large mixing bowl, combine the eggs and spices and whisk until the mixture comes together. Set bowl in the fridge to let the flavors mix a bit. • In a medium sauté pan, cook the ba- con strips until slightly crispy. Drain the excess fat from the pan and then

Make Your Make-up Count
Okay! So you got the ring! Congrats! Put your thoughts together and start planning your big day. Aside from the dress, the invitations, and the flowers, set time to put your best face forward. If you are doing your own makeup, here are a few tips to keep in mind: • Use a face primer to smooth out skin. It will also help keep your makeup on longer. • Use a mix of textures on your eyes. Mix matte and glaze shadows to create dimension. • Line your eyes as close to your lashes as you can. This will define them and make them pop! I like the gel liners as they won’t smudge. • Curl lashes and use waterproof mascara. This mascara will help keep their curl and it won’t run if you cry. • If you opt for false lashes, choose single ones rather than a strip. They will look more natural. • Fill in your brows with an eye shadow that matches your hair color. This will
24 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com
frame your eyes and define the face. Apply concealer to the inner corner of your eye. • Always use a foundation or powder that matches your skin and buff it with a puff to assure evenness. • Apply blush to the apple of your cheeks and brow bone, and shimmer powder or cream underneath the eyes and to your décolleté. • Use a lip color that compliments your flowers then line your lips. Blot, use powder and reapply. Wait to apply lip gloss till after the ceremony and before the reception. That way, the gloss won’t transfer to his lips. • Finally, use a makeup setting spray. This will keep your makeup looking fabulous all through the ceremony. Good luck with your makeup. If you find yourself too stressed out or discouraged, seek the advice of a professional makeup artist. They are available to help you select colors and offer additional makeup techniques.

“Ah-Ha” Dress Moments
Weddings are supposed to be one of the most beautiful days in a woman’s life, and all of the planning can prove to be quite overwhelming. I work with so many brides that have no idea where to start in picking or designing the perfect dress. Here are a few pointers to make this decision a little easier. One of the first things you probably picture when envisioning your wedding is the dress. Picture yourself on your wedding day. What are you wearing? What silhouette is your gown? What fabric? Is it embroidered or beaded? What color is it? With so many choices for the dress, it can be overwhelming to look through hundreds or thousands of them. Some brides feel that after looking
26 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com
through racks and racks of dresses, they all begin to look the same. Before you even set out to try them on, envision your wedding day and how your dress looks, and jot down a list of things that describe the dress of your dreams. You don’t have to know all the wedding dress terms. Just write down a description of the gown you’re envisioning. Example list: “princessy, satin, some shade of white but not pure white, strapless.” You should always have a bit of knowledge about dresses (and know some of the lingo) before you even set foot into a bridal shop. There are also many bridal magazines that will provide a ton of information, including Brides, Modern Bride, Bridal Guide, etc. All of these magazines have websites, where you can find quick information without paying for the magazine. Decide on a silhouette. Wedding dresses are made in several different silhouettes. Before considering anything else, know which type of gown will flatter your figure the best. Look at photos of each type. *Ball gowns have very full skirts and generally will look beautiful on any body type, unless the bride is very short and small. In this case, it may be overwhelming to her small frame. Ball gowns generally either have crinolines built in or a slip you must wear to support the shape of the gown. Be advised that this extra fabric can be heavy and bulky and will require extra care to wear. *A-lines usually have a fitted bodice with a skirt that flares gently from the waist to form an “A” shape. They generally work for everyone as well, and are a terrific choice for someone who is pear-shaped or would like to hide lower body flaws, but does not want a ball gown. A-lines are not as full as ball gowns. *Sheaths flatter women with slim, balanced figures. They shouldn’t be worn by brides who dislike their figures. This gown will not hide any flaws. A lot of sheath dresses are bias cut and clingy. If you think your thighs or butt are too big, you’ll probably be miserable in this type of dress. Don’t try to pull it off because
FASHION
So6ixFebruary2011
you found a gown you love in this style. You don’t want to risk being uncomfortable or self-conscious on your wedding day, or regretting your choice every time you look at wedding photos. *Empire waist gowns have a skirt that falls from just below the bust line. Although usually listed with various waistline types and not always considered a type of silhouette, they are a wonderful choice for a casual, non-formal wedding, or weddings in a tropical climate. They’re usually made of light, flowing fabric like chiffon. They’re also excellent for pregnant brides, because they provide extra room in the waist, making them a comfortable choice. They also won’t draw as much attention to the belly as a dress with a lower waistline would. You must also consider the circumstances of your wedding as well. Formal ceremonies usually call for floor length gowns and long trains, while informal ceremonies (especially destination weddings) are a terrific place to wear a shorter gown without a train at all (or a “sweep” train, which just barely brushes the floor). Another example: in some cases, strapless gowns are considered inappropriate for very formal ceremonies. If you’re getting married in the winter, you may not
FASHION
So6ixFashion want to be wearing a very light, thin fabric unless you plan to be inside the entire time. If you’re having a beach wedding in the middle of July, you may not want to wear a heavy fabric like duchess satin. While the most traditional ceremonies will call for a white gown, in many cases, wedding dresses don’t have to be pure white anymore! Many women choose dress colors that best complement their skin tones, ranging from diamond white to ivory to champagne to actual colors (pink, blue, red). Pick the color you feel most beautiful in. Lastly, you should decide on your budget. When considering budget, you don’t need to set a very specific price. Just make it a general range, such as $1000 - $1500, or even $1000 - $2000. You can always break this rule later if you’re able to and really want to, but it helps to have a general range. If you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, then you can have it custom made. My custom dresses start at $2000 whereas a custom Vera starts at $15,000. Custom dresses typically take at least 12 weeks to produce, so factor that into your planning. Some experts suggest devoting 10% of the overall wedding budget to the bride’s attire. Just be sure to remember that “attire” includes not just the gown itself, but the other stuff as well: veil, shoes, slip, jewelry, etc. Almost every bride has that “AH-HA” moment when she tries on the perfect dress. Just trust your instincts. Remember that it is YOUR wedding day so you can really do whatever you want. Be yourself, be unique, and be beautiful!

How to Get a Good One. Coles Garden is just minutes from downtown Oklahoma City, right across from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum at 1514 NE 63rd. Creator Allen Coles had so many visitors from around the world touring his lush, perfectly manicured gardens that he decided to open the fifteen acres to the public for weddings, receptions, and corporate gatherings. Mr. Coles passed away in 2006, and the new owners, Willie and Jenny Wood, have kept his dream alive in an elegant manner that I’m sure he would have approved of. The Royal Garden, enshrined in roses and box holly, seats 400 guests. In the Waterfall Garden, a seventy-five foot waterfall splashes lovingly into a Koi pond. Packages with linens, draped tables, Chiavari chairs, and even a security detail are available. Opening up to a massive veranda, the Royal Room has exquisite French doors and the grounds are graced by a circa 1900 Persian Wishing Swing. The Groom Suite comes equipped with a pool table and huge flat screen. The Regency Room is enclosed, but provides the feeling of being outdoors with its open air and breathtaking garden view. Call Lynda McCasland at 478-1529 to find out about a vast array of wedding and reception packages. The old Will Rogers Theatre at 4322 N. Western has been given an expert make over by Western Concepts. This company has in its famous family Sushi Neko, Musashi’s, Will’s Coffee Shop, The Lobby Bar, and The Coach House. The historic theater is perfect for a wedding reception with its art deco detailed bar, large wood dance floor, and elevated stage. The staff can provide you with ice carvings, chocolate fountains, and specialty linens. They boast a brand spanking new state-of-the-art sound and lighting system as well. The Wedding Planner
So6ixFebruary2011 By: Jacqueline Larocco
an ESSENTIAL LIST! Planning a wedding is one of the most stressful undertakings a couple can begin. A wedding celebration typically involves a large number of people who all have to come together and work diligently to make a few hours very special for two people. It can be daunting for the bride and groom to begin the planning process. Who wants to think about flower arrangements, cake choices, bridesmaid dresses, and tuxes for six months straight? Thousands upon thousands of couples are planning to get married this summer, and since June is usually the busiest month for weddings, the majority of people have about five months left of planning. This may not seem like much, but it is possible to plan your dream wedding; you just have to create a check list. The first thing you want to do before anything else is put together a wedding folder or binder. This is where you can keep receipts, business cards, questions that you have for your vendor or anything else that can fit. The last thing you want a week before your wedding is to wonder, “Now, who did we order our
42 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com
flowers from?” Trust me, you’ll forget. The next step is to figure out your budget. Most couples have financial help from family, but a lot of couples these days go at it alone. Either way, you have to have a strict budget, because it is all too easy to go over your spending limits. You think, “Hmm, that cake is fifty dollars over our cake budget, but I really like it. Let’s get it. Besides, it’s only fifty.” But pretty soon the extra costs add up, and before you know it you are two thousand dollars over budget. This isn’t to say that you should sacrifice what you want, but keep a running tally of how much things cost, and do your best to stay within the budget. Keep this information in your folder so that you can find out at a glance just how much you’ve spent and on what. Picking a wedding party adds a lot of pressure to the planning process. It’s one of the first things you have to do after budgeting, and you don’t want to leave anyone out. But there is one very important thing to remember: the more bridesmaids and groomsmen, the more dresses, tuxes, shoes, gifts, and consequently, the more money! If you find that your wedding party count is exceeding a handful of friends, perhaps it is time to make the decision to limit it. There are plenty of other options for those who wish to still be a part of the wedding. Ushers don’t necessarily need to be dressed in a tux, and they are actually quite helpful as guests arrive. And girlfriends can stand at the sign-in table or hand out programs. Another easy alternative for that friend who is left out: hand them a video camera and tell them you want them to capture as much as possible. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t hire a videographer for your wedding, but it offers a more informal viewing of the big day, and gives your guests a chance to wish you well on camera. The guest list is another thing in
The Big Picture
So6ixFebruary2011 which the more people you invite, the more money it will cost. Food, cake, and location are all affected by the number of people attending. If you can’t fit more than two-hundred people in your small hometown church, then don’t invite four-hundred guests. Most cakes are also priced based on how many people they feed, so it is important in your budgeting process to think about the guest list ahead of time. If a smaller wedding is what you really want, but you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, you can have a small wedding service, and then throw a separate party for everyone else at a friend’s house. Make it a potluck and you’re looking at a practically costfree reception. Registering for gifts is easier today than it used to be. Now you can simply go online to a store’s website and click on the items you are interested in. But make sure you do this early on in the planning process, so that friends and family will have time to decide on what to get you. Also, if it’s been several months since your aunt has purchased your gift, and a week before the wedding she sees you still don’t have that blender, she might just go out and get t for you. When people have had several months to think about the gifts, you’re more likely to get what you want. Then comes the dress. This can be fun, or it can be tedious. It becomes tedious when you have tried on your fortieth dress and your poor bridal party is passed out on the couch in front of the store mirror. Most wedding dress shops have websites, and most of those websites have photo galleries of their dresses. Go online before your dress appointment and look through which styles interest you. If you go to the shop with an idea of what you want, it makes it easier on everyone and much more enjoyable for your friends. These are all things that are generally done sixth months before the wedding, so if you’re planning a June wedding, hopefully you’ve already gotten started on them. Here is a checklist of to do’s after you’ve managed to secure a place, se-
The Big Picture
So6ixTheBigPicture lect a dress, register, and hire your vendors. It would be a good idea to keep a checklist in your binder to help you stay on track. Five to six months before the wedding: • Select and order invitations. You generally don’t mail out the invitations until two to three months before the wedding, but if there are mistakes, you want plenty of time to fix them before having to send them out. • Start planning your honeymoon. Airlines are busy in June. It’s a good idea to get a head start on airline tickets if you plan on traveling. • Shop for bridesmaids’ dresses. Bridesmaid dresses are usually a simpler process than the bride’s dress, so this can be done at a separate appointment after the bride’s dress has been ordered. • Meet with the officiate. Whether it is a preacher who you’ve known since you were four or a stranger who works at the local chapel, you’re going to want to go over plans with him/her. Many couples like to personalize their vows. Four to five months before the wedding: • Cake time! Some bakeries require a long notice on cake orders, especially for June weddings. Be sure to do a taste test if you haven’t tried the bakery before. • Wedding shoes. Decide on which shoes your bridesmaids will wear. A good way to cut costs is to ask them to purchase the shoes themselves. They get to keep them, and unless you picked lime green as your wedding color, they should be able to wear them again. • Music/entertainment. If you are having live music, now is the time to book them. Three months before the wedding: • This is the time to finalize everything. Make sure that the cake, photographer, entertainment, invitations, and every-

thing else you’ve booked or ordered is going to be there on the day of. This is where all those business cards in your binder come in handy. Take one day to set aside for this and call all of your vendors to confirm. • Purchase the rings. Take your future hubby to the jewelry store and select the wedding rings. Sometimes if you special order them, they can take several weeks to come in.
So6ixFebruary2011 By: Jacqueline Larocco in to get your license. For Oklahoma it is within ten days of the wedding. Don’t forget to have someone bring it to the ceremony. Planning ahead of time makes the week before your wedding much easier to cope with. It also helps you to stay in budget. You want your wedding day to be enjoyable, not hectic. Just remember, last minute decisions and procrastination just don’t work for weddings.
• Send out invitations. Three months is usually a good amount of time, especially if you sent out save-the-date cards previously. Two months before the wedding: • Newspaper announcement. This is the best way to let people who aren’t close enough to have been invited know that you’re getting married. • Bachelor/bachelorette party. It used to be customary to have the big party the night before the wedding, but it is becoming more and more common to have the bachelor or bachelorette parte a couple of months before. This way, you won’t be too busy to enjoy yourself, and let’s face it, who wants to show up to their wedding after a long night of partying? Talk about a headache. One month before the wedding: • This is the time where all your planning comes to fruition. This is when you get to meet with your hairstylist that you booked, see the flowers and bouquets you ordered, and arrange the seating chart at the venue you chose. Make sure to try on your dress a week before the wedding. Let’s be honest, the planning was stressful and there is always that chance that you put on a few pounds. It is much better to get any little mishaps taken care of a week before the wedding. • Get marriage license. Check with your state office and see when you need to go

Preparing...
For Your Wedding Day February is the month of love and connection for many people. It is a time to celebrate the relationships we hold dear and for some, to make the commitment of marriage and growth towards a future together. If you are in that category, here are a few tips and words of advice to help you prepare for your wedding day and the days ahead. Communication is key in many things in life and especially in putting together a well planned wedding. There are many people that specialize as wedding planners, but there are still things that you should make sure to be aware of, prepare for, and be involved in. After all, it is an investment in your relationship and a day you will hopefully want to remember for a long time.
The Dress for the Brides and Bridesmaids These days there are so many choices in dresses and styles, but remember this is your day. You want something that speaks about you. You may want to feel beautiful, express your character or just be comfortable. The dress is something that most brides take a lot of time deciding on, but sometimes there are things that just speak and call out to you. Take your time and look around. There are some great places to find dresses, but don’t make rush decisions.
The Big Picture
The Tux and Attire for the Grooms and Groomsmen To own or rent? For the groom, you may want to keep the Tux because you never know when you may need it for a formal dinner or any other event, and it can be a reminder of your union as well. It can be good should you and your spouse ever want to do more pictures as well. However, there are occasions where it may not be in the budget, so renting is a viable option. Just as advice given to the ladies, take your time to make a decision. You want to be comfortable and look sharp. You don’t want to be breaking a sweat or freezing to death. Finding the right fit is important too, and if you buy, you can have the suit custom fitted, which is a huge benefit.
Photographers A photographer is something most people get, but they don’t always realize how important good communication with the person capturing moments of your day can be. You want to go over the shots you want taken, let them know of any concerns you might have. A good photographer knows the shots to take, but there may be extra moments to capture, like a great Aunt from out of town or a family group that only gets together on rare occasions. When I shoot events, I try to bring a few assistants as well. Having a photographer with a team can capture several things going on at once and get different angles of various moments

Preparing For Your Wedding Day such as: The Vows, The Ring Exchange, The Kiss, The Toast, The Dance. You want to cover concerns about lighting and flash during the ceremony. In general, flash photography should not be done during the ceremony as it distracts from what’s taking place. Some great photographers I have worked with may have one flash at the entry way to capture the bride and bridesmaids before or right as they walk in, but once at the altar, you want to keep the focus where it belongs and distractions at minimum. Photos to keep in mind: 1. Engagement: Bridal (pictures in your dress before the wedding), Moments (dates, kissing, family, etc.) By having these pictures done early, you can have them at the reception for friends and family to learn about you and your new partner in life. Plus, they give you more content for your wedding album. 2. The Wedding: preparation, shoes, dress, bouquets, bridesmaids, groomsmen, personality, doing makeup, flower girl and ring bearer, the ceremony (exchange of vows, rings, the kiss), family pictures, groom and bridesmaids, bride and groomsmen, the wedding party, priest and couple, leaving the chapel. 3. The Reception: the toast, cutting the cake, the dance, family moments, kids playing and dancing, the exit (rice, bubbles, confetti), getting in the limo. Ask in advance for all the shots you want, but if inspiration hits, don’t be afraid to ask the photographer or their assistants to capture something special. Venues, Chapels, Gardens and Reception areas. Your venue is important. Some questions to ask are: Is there adequate parking? How much room is inside? What are the costs and benefits? Give yourself choices and comparisons until you find the right fit for you. If you find a venue that is well put together, you don’t have to worry about light for the photos, parking for family and friends, and of-

So6ixFebruary2011 By: Bryan crump ten times there will be an area to hold your reception afterwards. Keep in mind the time of year you are booking as well. For instance, you probably don’t want to have your wedding outdoors in the middle of winter. Makeup and Hair This is something that most brides and bridesmaids have to rush around to get done in addition to the many other tasks for the day. Don’t be afraid to get assistants to help you and your key players so you can have time to get your makeup, hair, nails and anything else you might need to prepare.
Travel Do you rent a limo, rent a vehicle, or travel on your own? Deciding this early can help you get good deals, save you money, and help you to arrive in a way that is fun and comfy. The Cake, Flowers, Decoration & Catering You will want to plan for all this in advance, and the more prepared you are, the better. Give those that you are hiring to help you on this day respect and consideration, and it will always benefit you in the long run. With proper time and planning, arrangements and results can be accomplished that can be difficult or impossible if you wait until last minute. Invitations Get these selected and sent out early. Send them two to three months in advance so people can schedule time off

and make plans to attend. Don’t be afraid to send a save-the-date reminder. You can send a card in the mail or use things like Facebook and online event sites to create a list of people to be updated on information as well. Cover as many angles as you can. CREATE A CHECKLIST & CHECK IT OFTEN Write down anything you can think of that you need and give copies to those helping you. Check off things every day until and during the big day. You don’t want to forget something and kick yourself for it later. Wedding Professionals Consider consulting with a wedding planner; they have multiple resources that you may not even think to look for or even know about. There are people who plan weddings for a living, and if you trust a well recommended professional, you can get some of the most wonderful results. These are only a few of the many things to consider when getting everything ready. There is always a lot more than can be covered, so don’t be afraid to take time to do your research, make phone calls, and ask questions. Create a vision board early, so you have images that inspire you for everything you want. A journal, scrapbook and/or notebook are also good ways to jot down your ideas and gathered information and resources. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Big events are best done with a team, and it can take a lot of stress off your shoulders if you can find people to trust who help make things happen and get things done. I wish you well, and congratulations on your big day. May you all have wonderful relationships with excellent communication and beautiful moments. Live long and Well.
