The Healthy Truth

This month’s theme is health and fitness. And with the New Year finally here, many people are making their New Year’s resolutions. Some are trying to lose weight, exercise more, eat better, give up bad habits, or anything else that involves self-improvement. But what about the health of your relationship? That should come first before your own needs. If you haven’t thought of a resolution for that, I’ve got one that every couple struggles with on some level, a New Year’s resolution of honesty in the relationship. Honesty and trust is essential for a healthy relationship. As we all know, none of us are perfect. We have all lied and have bended the truth to get what we want, however, that doesn’t necessarily make us a liar, but dishonesty in a relationship can be destructful and ultimately lethal to a romantic relationship. I’m not just talking about the big, flat-out lies, but I’m also talking about the little white lies and lying by omission. “Lying by omission” refers to withholding information from someone because you know they will get upset if they hear it. This is a commonly abused self-defense mechanism and can be the most damaging to a relation-

The Big Picture

ship. Most of the time, we try to justify our lies or deceitfulness by saying “we’re just trying to save the relationship.” While that may be partially true in our own mind, in reality, we are being selfish and ultimately deceiving ourselves and the other person involved (the one you love). This causes more pain and hurt than just telling the truth would be. That is because dishonesty shatters trust, and a relationship requires trust to be successful. So how can you start this New Year with an honest relationship? The answer is simple, just be honest. I know that is easier said than done because our own selfish desire is to make things easy on ourselves, which means deceiving others to get what we want. But you aren’t the only one in your relationship, there are two of you, so you can’t deceive your other half. Tell the truth even when it might hurt, and don’t leave out important information. The truth can be painful, but a relationship with no trust can be destroying. And don’t think you can get away with lying, because as someone wise once said “Your sin will find you out.” Start out this New Year with a healthy relationship, an honest relationship!

Create a Fat-Burning Body

Reduce Body Fat % and GET IN SHAPE! Metabolism: It’s key to your weight-loss goals. Basically, it is your muscle-to-fat ratio. Think of your metabolism as the fat-burning engine of your body. If you increase lean muscle tissue, you increase the size of your “engine”, allowing more fuel (fat) to be burned. The more lean-muscle tissue, the greater your fatburning capacity! The No. 1 New Year’s Resolution is ‘REDUCE BODY FAT % and GET IN SHAPE’. If this is your resolution, let us help you boost your metabolism so you can succeed in keeping your resolution. The more muscle (and less fat), the higher your metabolism. This means more calories are being burned as you rest, work and play. That’s the good news! Unfortunately, as we age, muscle mass is naturally lost; causing our metabolism to slow down. And, losing weight too quickly is another way to lose muscle mass. When weight is lost too quickly (diet gimmicks), muscle mass is also lost. Then when you gain the weight back (very common) you gain FAT. Guess what? The fat makes your metabolism lower than it was before your “diet”. The engine analogy and the next three steps are all you need for a healthier, stronger, slimmer, more energetic life:

use it – YOU WILL LOSE IT. You don’t need to be a body builder or lift heavy weights. You can maintain your lean muscle tissue with many forms of strength training. If you don’t know where to start – start with a personal trainer. 3. Eat. Yes, EAT! Do not skip meals – especially breakfast. You body will begin to break down its own tissue because it needs energy. If you don’t eat, there isn’t any fuel for your “engine” so your body breaks down its fat and muscle reserves. When you do eat, your body becomes doubtful about when it will get more, so rather than burning the fat, your metabolism stores it and that means the fat ratio is still increasing. Eating 5 or 6 small meals daily keeps your metabolism going and keeps your blood sugar at a more even level – both of which prevent fat storage. Each of these steps will move you closer to your goal. So pick one. Get use to it, and then add another – the sequence isn’t important. Then, when they feel second nature to you, add the third and your body will reward you with an efficient engine that will keep the fat burning!

1. No more diets. They don’t work! Lose weight slowly. Rapid weight loss (more than 1 to 2 pounds a week) may look good on the scale, but you are losing muscle weight and still tilting that muscle-to-fat ratio in the wrong direction. Start by making small changes in the food you eat. Everything you eat has calories. Are you ingesting calories that are beneficial to your overall health or calories loaded with fat, salt and sugar? Remember: Energy in (calories) vs. Energy out (movement). 2. Strength Training. Spend at least 30 minutes, 3 times a week doing something that builds (uses) muscle. If you don’t

HAppy new year!

Reviewing Your 2011 Skincare Regimen

2011 is here. It’s time to make new resolutions or keeping last year’s. It’s also time to review your skincare regimen. Are you cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating your skin with the right products? Your skin changes from season to season and the products you are using now will be different than those you were using 6 months ago. For oily and normal-to-oily skin, use a foaming or gel cleanser every night and an oil-free moisturizer every morning. For normal-to-dry and dry skin, a cleansing lotion or cream is best. A lotion with a spf 15 or higher will help your skin feel soft and supple. I like to use a firming night cream with peptides or vitamin C. The eye area always needs special

Health & beauty

care. Always use an eye makeup remover. Some cleansers will leave an oily residue or gels will make the eye area feel dry. Eye cream and eye gels will help to soften lines and diminish the appearance of dark circles and puffiness. Using toner is a matter of preference. If you do use one, choose one with no alcohol. I like to put it in a spritz bottle and spray my face in the middle of the day for a quick pick-me-up. As the year begins, keep in mind these skincare tips and treat yourself to a product that will make a difference in how your skin feels and look!

Fitness and Health Edition Let’s face it, over the holiday the only exercise you got was moving from the couch to the kitchen. That’s okay, me too. And the food I took back to the couch with me wasn’t exactly Vegan. But, there is always a plus side to looking in the mirror and wondering what happened in a month which is a little motivation to reinstitute some good habits. Here are six helpful product ideas to jumpstart your journey back to looking and feeling like you want.

Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer - $20 The first step on the road back to looking good is to get moving again. Make it your goal to break a sweat every day. This device is a helpful way to document how many steps you’ve taken in a day. Watch as those steps turn into miles, and as goofy as it sounds, it’s really rewarding to see the number climb. Write down your number every night and try to beat it the next day. This device also measures calories you burn during a workout.

Clif Bar Energy Bars - $30/24pack One of the primary reasons we choose not to exercise one day is because we just don’t feel like it. When you eat nutritious foods that keep you energized, the chances of making yourself go exer-

14 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

cise are much higher. Clif Bars are a mix of carbohydrates, protein, and fiber that give you sustained energy. These snacks are also free of trans-fat, hydrogenated oils, and corn syrup. Unlike many healthy snack bars out there, these actually taste pretty good.

ASICS Men’s Gel-Nimbus 12 Running Shoes - $120 Shoes are vital in the world of fitness. Exercising in worn down footwear can cause strain throughout your body, causing you to burn through too much energy in your workout and quit early. There are many great shoe brands out there, but I have found ASICS shoes to last and hold up through many hours of running. Your feet have to hold up your entire body all of the time, so don’t be afraid to spend a little money on shoes to keep them fresh and prevent joint pains elsewhere.

Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Insulated Water Bottle with Loop Cap - $24 Water. I’ll say it again just to be thorough – WATER. There is nothing more important on this entire planet than water. And if you plan to get into shape and

stay motivated on your workout plan, you have got to be drinking water as often as possible. Klean Kanteen bottles come in a range of shapes and sizes, all so you can remember to stay hydrated. Buy one for yourself so you remember to take water with you to work or school. These are also a way to save money on plastic water bottle purchases.

Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition, and Health, Revised and Expanded Edition - $20 If there is something I have found that many people lack, it is having an adequate education about personal nutrition. This book will challenge you to think about your food choices each day. Educate yourself about food, after all, eating is a very basic thing we all must do to stay alive. Eat things you know will make you feel great and strive to learn more about anything you put into your body.

Rocky I know this is going to come across as a little cheesy, but if you need a little motivation to start exercising this time around, find things that can inspire you. For me, I put in Rocky and as soon as the training montage ends I’m outside throwing punches while running down the street. Anything you can do to help motivate your self is worth it, no matter how ridiculous.

Fitness Resolution

So6ixJanuary2011

Five Ways to Achieve Your Goal While there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look better as a New Year resolution, the problem with using appearance as a primary motivation to exercise is that it doesn’t last. Studies show that people who start exercising for body-shape and weight-loss goals alone not only work out less, but also are less likely to stick to it long-term than those who exercise for other reasons. An appearance-driven motivation is usually based on cultural pressures to conform to someone else’s idea of what’s thin or beautiful. It feels like something you should do and often results in poor long-term adherence. Who needs another should in their live? Moreover, better body perception develops when people work out for broader reasons of fitness and overall health. If people can view exercise less as an opportunity to look good and more as an opportunity to feel good, this in turn should improve their body satisfaction and self-esteem. And for people whose goal is to achieve some unrealistic body ideal, their efforts usually lead to frustration and then quitting altogether. Some people go to the other extreme: exercising excessively and developing eating disorders and other serious health problems. When people discover that wellness, not weight is the key issue; they find long-term satisfaction and enjoyment in exercise.

tion, individualized program, efficiency, safety, break through plateaus and improve technical skills. 3. Don’t pay too much attention to the scale. Weight is only one indicator of your fitness level; others include how your clothes fit, endurance and energy. 4. Find a fitness buddy. Make sure it’s someone who motivates you in a positive way to stick to your plan. Maybe it’s a group of co-workers or a friend. 5. Watch what you eat. You will get results faster if your nutritional habits mirror your new dedication to working out.

Five Ways to Approach Your Fitness Resolutions: 1. Ease into it. Going from zero workouts to hardcore sessions in the gym six days a week is almost a sure-fire recipe for a quick burnout. 2. Join a gym and meet with a Personal Trainer for a complimentary consultation. A personal trainer provides many benefits you can’t find when working out on your own. These include motiva-

Running trails

So6ixJanuary2011 By: Jacqueline Larocco

Walkin’ Around OKC New Year’s resolutions are being made, and many of them involve getting into better physical shape. But let’s face it, gym memberships are expensive, and who wants to spend their well-deserved Christmas bonus money on an at-home treadmill? Here’s the good news: Oklahoma offers many outdoor activities year-round that make getting into better shape not only cheaper, but enjoyable. It makes a huge difference in the health and well-being of a group of people if they have running and walking trails to travel on. Other large cities are filled with walking people. Ours unfortunately, is filled primarily with people in cars. However many Oklahomans aren’t even aware of the numerous walking trails available to us, especially in the metro areas. There are the more popular trails such as the Lake Hefner Trail which winds around Lake Hefner. The high-quality restaurants and boating docks are a nice attraction and the sunset can’t be put into words. The Earlywine Trail is another popular one, which circles around the South Oklahoma City YMCA, tennis courts, and a small public water park. This trail is much shorter, but provides an easily accessible walking trail for local residents. Downtown of course is its own paved park, but for Oklahomans that live downtown, a change of scenery is sometimes nice. Who wants to jog by the same buildings every day? Luckily, the Oklahoma River provides over a dozen miles of trails, winding along the beautiful river between Interstate 35 and Interstate 44. Oklahoma has passed several bills and started many projects that plan to increase the number of sidewalks and paved trails throughout the metro, so chances are there is one near you. (You can visit the Oklahoma City government website to look up trails in your area.) However if you plan on being a little more adventurous with your new “get

26 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

fit” goals, the Chesapeake Boathouse Experience may be for you. It is a great way to gather friends or family and involve them in your new resolutions as well. The boathouse offers tours and training on boating and kayaking, and even sets up small races for prizes. The Chesapeake Boathouse Experience takes place on the Oklahoma River, but they even offer to bring the river to you with an indoor mobile rowing system, which is great for church or school functions. Although it is only available for the winter holiday season, the downtown outdoor ice skating rink located in front of the Civic Center Music Hall provides a fun activity for everyone. The rink is affordable, and there are usually accompanying attractions such as concerts and festivals as well. There is one main reason that New Year’s resolutions don’t pan out. That reason is boredom. Fortunately for Oklahomans, we don’t have to use that excuse anymore. Change up your routine. Take the whole family out for a boat race on the Oklahoma River, and then the next day go for a jog with a friend on one of the many available trails in the state. That way when February rolls around, you’ll still be going strong on at least one of your resolutions.

How did you meet your husband David and why do they call him ‘Dr. Pants’? David and I met in February of 2000 at the Galileo open mic in the Paseo. I was living in Austin at the time, but was passing through OKC while on the road. I had always said I wasn’t the kind of girl a guy would cross a room to meet. After hearing me play my short open mic set, David came to introduce himself. It was the first time he proved me wrong, but certainly not the last. We were married 3 years later. Why do they call him Dr. Pants? Well, you might need to ask him that question, but the simple answer is that his band is called Dr. Pants. If you are under the weather, a prescription for a dose of Dr. Pants could definitely be the cure. What made you want to study opera at the beginning of your career? My parents enrolled me in classical voice lessons at age 10. I wouldn’t say I “wanted” to study opera. In reality, I wanted to sing my heart out at the top of my lungs ad nauseum. I was convinced the lead in the musical Annie was written just for me. I knew I wanted a life in music from a very young age. But my parents had the wisdom and foresight to harness all that creative energy. Studying opera gave me the fundamentals required to sustain vocal health over my lifetime, and helped me hone the vocal skills I’m known for as an artist today. Can you tell me about the inspiration for ‘Be My Record Label’? As an independent artist, I’ve chosen to go my own way outside the confines of a traditional record label. Truth be told, the traditional record label model is a dying entity. The industry is unstable. More and more the power is being dealt out across many artists as opposed to a select few. We are living in the renaissance of the independent. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter allow artist-to-fan connection like never before. Access is the word of the day. The difference between an independent artist and a major label artist is simple. One thing is certain: it’s not a difference in talent. The difference is purely financial. A record label is a checkbook. So,

Entertainment

So6ixJanuary2011

So6ixEntertainment

Raise Your VOice! A Little Q & A with K.C. Clifford

without the resources of a label, independent artists have to implement creative solutions to funding art. Were it not for my amazing fan-base, I would not have a sustainable career. I owe an immense debt of gratitude to them. In 2008 I wrote the songs for a new record, but I had no capital with which to record and promote a new project. So, I asked my fans to help me make it happen. I booked studio time on faith alone, knowing I would need to come up with $10,000 before I could even start the recording process. The fans blew me away. Within a month, they had partnered with me to the tune of 10 grand. Before it was all said and done, they had given me over $20,000 to record and promote my latest record, “Orchid.” Watch out traditional record labels: the power of the loyal music fan is not to be underestimated. I think it’s noteworthy to mention that the idea of “patrons of the arts” is hardly a new concept. Flip through a history book and you’ll find that generous people have put their money behind their artistic taste for centuries. I was and still remain humbled by the notion that what I do moves people. And moreover I’m floored that those people believe my music is something that a greater audience deserves the chance to discover. I’m just a girl who writes songs so I don’t feel crazy all the time. But my fans help me see that the music has a greater destiny. And for that I am ever grateful. They are truly generous friends. What is the first thing you would say to a young girl with an eating disorder who asked for your advice? Wow. That’s a big question and I’m pretty sure there’s not enough space allotted to this story for my full answer. The very first thing I would say? Get professional help. You are not alone. I remember the first person I met who was in recovery from bulimia. Talking to her was like coming up for air after what felt like years of suffocating silence. I left that meeting feeling hope for the first time. When you suffer from an eating disorder, you can’t imagine that anyone would understand the disgusting things you do in private. You are convinced of your own

Entertainment

terminal uniqueness. I truly believed that if anyone ever really knew me, they would run the other way, horrified. I believed I was unlovable. The intense hatred I felt towards myself seeped into every relationship, building a wall that kept me from experiencing the love, life and goodness I deserved, but could not receive. It has nothing to do with food. What would I say? Fight. Tell the truth as best you can. You don’t know this now, but you are worth it. I know you don’t believe you can overcome this disease, but I believe you can. I know you feel hopeless and you want to die, but I’ve seen the despairing darkness dissipate and I now live the hope that you can’t yet see. I know you feel like a total failure, like you will never be enough so why even dream? But I see who you are and know that is not your truth. So, in the meantime, I will believe and hope and dream on your behalf. I found my voice and I will speak for you until you find yours. I will stand in this gap until you can stand on your own. You are not alone. I have walked where you walk. The only way out is through. Yes, it’s a dark, terrifying road. I am not here to fool you: it is a dark, terrifying road, and the journey will not be an easy one. But I have traversed it, and lived to tell my story. I traveled the road not just for me, but also for you. That you too would know you can the find life, belief, hopes and dreams on the other side. I stand in the clearing, full of hope, full of life, full of belief, and yes, even full of love for myself. I will wait for you here and rejoice with every step you come closer to the light of day. You are not alone. How did you get involved in the summer songwriting camp for kids? My husband David and I are both passionate about songwriting. We created the Summer Songwriting Camp for kids in order to inspire the next generation of Oklahoma artists. We loved working with the students. Their zest for the process was incredibly refreshing! We are looking forward to holding our 2nd Annual Song Camp in Summer 2011. SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com 31

Look Good in What You Wear! As 2010 draws to a close, I have decided for the very first year ever to NOT have a New Year’s resolution. I mean the commitment to a resolution usually only lasts a few months right? This year I have decided to make a true lifestyle change to get in the best shape of my life. I started this journey shortly after my most gluttonous holiday, Thanksgiving. Weight has always been an issue for me. (Let me remind you, by the end of my freshman year of high school, I quit weighing myself when the scales tipped 310 lbs.) I now put the same amount of thought and energy into planning my diet and exercise that I put into designing a gown. I have realized, If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. Since I recently moved my home and business to Oklahoma City, the first step in planning my lifestyle change was to find a gym that met my needs. I need a 24 hour gym that offers cardio classes and is equidistant from my home and office. I found 4Star Fitness on May and couldn’t be happier. They have a state of the art cardio cinema, spin, yoga, and zumba classes weekly. This diversity keeps me from getting bored with my cardio. I also keep from getting bored by working out with a trainer twice a week. One of the best ways to really push yourself in the gym is to have a trainer guiding you to your goal and making sure you are not hurting your body. LC is the trainer of all trainers in my opinion. While it is impossible to overlook his perfectly chiseled physique, which is only a bonus to working out with him. He makes working out serious and fun all at the same time. LC is one of the most down to earth trainers and never makes you feel uncomfortable. He will also help you with a diet plan that has proven success. Sculpting results is his focus as well as my goal. Not only is he the best, I personally guarantee his rates are the best you will find also. Call today to see why I am so pleased. LC 405-819-8981. While diet and exercise are essential to living a healthy lifestyle, sometimes

32 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

I don’t see the results quite as fast as I would like. That is why I have added to my plan a few treatments at Bodytrends Salon & Spa. Harvey and Tashonda are the owners of this full service salon, spa, boutique, photography studio, and their services are unmatched in the state. The two treatments I am focusing on are called VIP and ACCENT. These are both nonsurgical spa treatments that melt fat, tone muscle, and tighten skin. I have checked into cosmetic surgery and just don’t want to go under the knife. My friends at Bodytrends have alternate solutions and are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Bodytrends also has an expert staff with Larry Chowning-The Infamous Hair God and Leigh Thompson-photographer of the stars to name a few. They have two locations in Oklahoma City and one in Tulsa. They track your progress for you so you can see how many inches/lbs. you lose. The results really are amazing. Check out bodytrendspa.com to see a full list of services. Everyone wants to look good and feel good about themselves. For me, I want to look good in the clothes I want to wear. That is my drive and focus. I truly feel the foundation of new friends I have planned into my lifestyle are going to help me accomplish my goal. I feel great about the changes I see from just a few weeks, and I am optimistic about 2011.

Laser Tattoo Removal:

By: Dr. Harvey Jenkins Owner: Body Trends

Erasing the Last Traces of Your ‘Ex’ Getting your tattoo may have seemed like a great idea at the time. He or she was the “love-of-your-life”. Of course, it made sense to tattoo his or her name on your butt. But sometimes, what may seem like a great idea really is not! First off, the tattoo you have may have been poorly done, perhaps by an amateur who learned his craft in a local prison. Or, perhaps, you may have entered a new profession, like law enforcement, where exposed tattoos may be prohibited. Most likely, you may have ‘broken up’ or divorced the person whose name is the tattooed on you. And you realize that you don’t want to introduce the world to the name of your ‘biggest mistake’ everytime you disrobe in front of a future “loveof-your-life”? It is called “Tattoo Regret”, and whatever the reason or circumstance, the tattoo must come off. Ways to Remove Tattoos There are several ways to remove tattoos, each differing in its ease, its reliability of removal and its ramifications. Traditionally, tattoo removal has been approached through chemical and mechanical means. Caustic Tattoo removal creams, like “Doc Wilson’s Wrecking balm” have been used. Mechanical means, like Dermabrasion has been used. For large tattoos, skin grafting, believe or not, has been used. But as you would expect, these methods are less desirable options, because they are associated with pain, bleeding, and the chance of infection. Furthermore, they result in a considerable amount of scarring and, in most cases, a suboptimal aesthetic result. Rather than substituting an ugly scar for unwanted tattoo, the public has looked to laser tattoo removal technology as the best solution for cosmetic concerns. Laser tattoo removal is now considered the gold standard for treatment for unwanted tattoos. Lasers being used for tattoo removal, date back to the 1960’s with argon-laser, the CO2-laser culminating in the use of lasers called Q-switch lasers. The lasers work through the selective photothermolysis principle, meaning the laser light targeting a specific color for a pigment within

the tattoo, collides with the pigment particle, and breaks it up into smaller particles which can be resorbed by the body’s immune system. The criteria that the laser must meet to be effective include: • must be capable of penetrating to the depth of the pigment in the skin • must have more affinity for the pigment than for the skin in order to minimize skin damage • must be delivered in short pulses to minimize heat transfer to the surrounding. skin • must have a pulse that delivers sufficient energy to heat the pigment enough to fragment it, or else no removal will be possible. The Medlite C6 Laser A Q-switch laser meeting the previous criteria and is well-suited for Tattoo removal. It is one of the safest and fastest lasers developed for this purpose, and the “C6” function allows for targeting of tattoo ink with 4 different laser wavelengths resulting in the most flexibility in targeting multicolored tattoos. It emits a highenergy pulsed laser with long wavelengths, short pulse duration and high peak power making it ideal for the removal of red, green, sky blue, dark blue and black tattoo pigments. It does so in a manner which is far less painful than other lasers, with a minimal, if any, scarring, and a very low risk of permanent tissue damaging. Removal Considerations Complete laser tattoo removal requires multiple treatment sessions, spaced 6 weeks apart. The degree of completion of the pigment removal and the number of sessions required depends on many factors: Skin type, tattoo location, color, amount of ink, scarring and layering. Certain colors, it should be noted, are easier to remove than others, and the ease of removal will impact the final number. Tattoos containing blue, black and red pigments are the easiest to remove. Yellow is harder, but may be difficult to see on skin. Green is the hardest color to remove. In general, with each treatment session,

the smallest particles produced by the laser are resorbed quickest. These particles will then be removed by the immune system over the 6-week duration. With subsequent treatments, new particles will be created through action of the laser. The result will be fading of the tattoo. In general 6-15 treatments are required for the average “professional” tattoo, whereas only 3-8 treatments are required for the average “amateur” tattoo.

Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods Market is Coming to OKC! The New Year brings forth many new things. New beginnings, new goals, and new resolutions are on the forefront of everyone’s mind. The number one thing on most people’s minds is usually weight loss. Diet fads, weight-loss tips, and gym memberships become extremely popular at the start of each year. Unfortunately for most, however, those New Year’s resolutions don’t usually stick with us past January or February. In order to make a real transformation, one must make actual lifestyle changes. Some of these changes can begin at home. It’s not only about what you eat when you are out, it’s about the eating habits you establish at home. Until recently though, Oklahoma has not had a wide range of choices for organic grocery stores in the past, but that will soon change. Metro Oklahomans will be happy to know that Whole Foods Market plans to open a large 35,000 square foot grocery store in northwest Oklahoma City. This addition to the metro will be the largest organic and whole foods grocery store in the state. It will be a new source for naturally produced foods, free of preservatives and artificial additives. The health aspect of this venture is only a small reason to celebrate when considering other ideas that Whole Foods is bringing to the table. Whole Foods Market has announced a national plan to decrease their ecological footprint by reducing gas emissions and energy use. Although the facility will be spacious, Whole Foods Market has made every effort to be eco-friendly. Not only did the company completely eliminate the use of disposable plastic grocery bags, but it also provides the opportunity for shoppers to recycle their used plastic bags. Oklahoma City has grown over the last several decades, and has brought in several major national corporations. This growth has played a major part in the decision to bring Whole Foods Mar-

ket to our state. Whole Foods Market is known for selling local fruits and vegetables, which means good news for Oklahoma farmers. The great thing about Whole Foods Market is that they provide a special selection of foods based on the community that they serve. This grocery store is not just for vegetarians or vegans. The choices and options that they provide cater to a wide variety of diets. The goal here is to turn people on to delicious and healthy eating habits, not to shove cardboard down everyone’s throat. In a 2010 study, Oklahoma ranked sixth out of the fifty states for obesity. Although we don’t seem to have it as bad as Mississippi or Alabama, being the sixth fattest state is still nothing to be proud of. As much as we would hate to admit it, Oklahoma could really benefit from the introduction of a healthy supermarket. So this year, don’t be afraid to include healthy eating habits in your New Year’s resolutions. The creation of a new healthy habit will definitely pay off more than that Ab Rocket you’ve had your eye on.

CrossFit Home Workout

A Simple Workout You Can Try At Home With the new year in full swing, many of us have set fitness goals that we’re excited to get working on. Some of us are focused on losing body fat, some on gaining strength, and some on just being more active in general. Time is a big issue for most of us and sometimes this means we have to squeeze workouts in at odd times. A nice shiny gym isn’t always available for you. I run a very busy gym and at times I’m just too busy to get a workout in, so I’ll do one at home. You can workout at home too, especially if you’re crunched for time. All you need is that fabulous body of yours. In this article, I’m going to outline a simple workout you can try at home. It’s a full body blast, guaranteed to leave you feeling pumped. There is really no equipment needed, just some space to tear it up - your living room will do just fine. This is an interval based workout, designed to let you push hard but recover as well. With these short bursts of intense work followed by a bit of rest, you’ll boost your metabolic rate. Sample CrossFit Style Workout

squats! Grab yourself a timer or use a stopwatch to keep track of time. Cool Down: 5 minutes walk or light jog Burpee • From a standing position, kneel down and place your hands on the floor, right in front of your feet

• Kick your feet back behind your body to push-up position and lower your chest to the floor

Warm-up: 3 minutes walk or jog followed by 50 jumping jacks Workout: On the minute, each minute, for 10 minutes, do the following: • 3 Burpees • 6 Sit-ups • 9 Squats

• Peel back up and bring both of your feet feet back toward your hands, either one at a time or together

At the beginning of each minute, complete the cycle as fast as you can. Any time leftover in the minute is available for rest and recovery. The faster you get it done, the more rest you get. See if you can make it the whole way through the 10 minutes. If you can, or if this looks too easy, extend the time to 15 or even 20 minutes -but keep in mind that this will be 60 burpees, 120 sit-ups, and 180

• Jump in the air and clap above your head to finish the rep

Sit-up • Lying on your back, bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor

• Keeping a long, tight torso, sit back and down. Pushing the hips back as you descend, make sure to kep your weight in your heels

• Reach forward and sit upright, bringing your chest to your thighs • Descend until your hip crease is below the top of your knee cap (as long as you’re not experiencing any pain in the joint) • Drive back up through your heels, standing tall at the top, with your hips and knees straight

• If you have trouble with your lower back hurting during sit-ups, try rolling up a large towel and placing it in the small of your back. Squat • Set your feet shoulder width apart and point your toes out just slightly
