L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F Happy 2015! Wait … can you actually believe it’s already 2015? Where did 2014 go? It was such a fabulous and fun year, both for So6ix and for myself. A lot of challenges met, obstacles overcome and adventures had, and smiles and laughter in abundance. Each year as I have grown older, I have come to truly understand the importance of not only cherishing the year as a whole, but to cherish each day. It’s been important for me this year to get as healthy and as fit as I can. Working out and living a healthy lifestyle is my medicine. Throughout 2014, I set attainable goals and worked towards them. As you’ll read in this issue, setting realistic goals with regard to health and fitness is important. A lot happened this year in the public eye: see our recap of 2014. You might be surprised at how many large-scale events happened that you may have forgotten about. Trying to become a better you? We lay out simple things you can do to make your life even

better. You may be doing some of these already. Do you set resolutions at the start of each New Year? To each his own, but this year I went with broad reminders to myself of how I will strive to live my life and the attitude I hope to sustain.

Be giving Be thoughtful Be loving Be healthy Be smiley Be forgiving Be understanding Be truthful Be silly Be myself Let’s make this year the best one yet!

CROSSFIT: ELITE FITNESS Written by Kevin Malahy of Deer Creek CrossFit

How do you know if someone does CrossFit? Give them a minute and they’ll tell you. It’s funny because it’s true. For those of you who have friends, family, coworkers or a spouse that frequent one of our gyms, you’ve probably gotten annoyed at their compulsion to talk about all things CrossFit. What is it that makes CrossFit so powerful that those involved can’t keep from talking about it? What is CrossFit? From a legal standpoint, CrossFit is simply a brand, the way the NFL is to football or the UFC is to mixed martial arts. CrossFit is only CrossFit when performed at a licensed affiliate or at a sanctioned event led by a certified CrossFit trainer. From a training standpoint, CrossFit is virtually any type or combination of exercises that you can think of. As long as it falls within the legal parameters of CrossFit’s branding, it’s CrossFit. CrossFit adopted and utilizes a blend of various disciplines, in which it even offers a vast variety of specialty courses and certifications: weightlifting, football, endurance, gymnastics, kettlebell and strongman, just to name a few. CrossFit’s defining element of the super-intense, bleedfrom-your-ears, vomit-inducing circuit, or “MetCon,” more commonly referred to as a “WOD” (workout of the day), is not exclusive to CrossFit either. So then, what makes CrossFit unique? Ironically, it has become the members themselves. CrossFit revolutionized how our generation views fitness. It has developed a culture by which your measure of success is not based on how strong you appear, but rather on your internal fortitude. Proponents of this culture no longer want to just look strong, but to be strong, of both mind and body. CrossFit tests an individual’s willingness to be comfortable with being uncomfortable as means to achieve a desired goal. It has stripped away all of the comforts of conventional globo-style gyms. There are no mirrors, no cardio theaters … no shortcuts. Mark Rippetoe, a strength training coach and author known for his extremely candid and typically uncouth comments, has been quoted as saying, “Most of the problems with the bodies and minds of the folks occupying the current culture involve an unwillingness to do anything hard, or anything that they'd rather not do. I applaud your resolve, and I welcome you to the community of people who have decided that easy will no longer suffice.” But what makes CrossFit so addicting is that it becomes much more than a training system. CrossFit becomes a lifestyle, a social network and a family. CrossFit has a propensity for developing camaraderie between members. Enduring grueling workouts side by side with others creates a sense of togetherness often absent in traditional gym settings. Beyond classes, local affiliates regularly host benefits, throw parties and even plan vacations with the members. If you were to visit us on a Saturday, it wouldn’t be uncommon to see entire families in attendance, sometimes even with pets, alongside groups of buddies having a beer. Although the push for CrossFit to be viewed as a competitive sport has become more prevalent in recent years, most affiliates are very welcoming, with low pressure, friendly environments for all skill levels and ages. If you’re interested in CrossFit, I encourage you drop in multiple locations and talk with their members until you find the right fit for you. 10

TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

1

LAUGH OR SMILE EVERY MORNING. Laughing and smiling have many positive benefits. When you smile and laugh, you release the feel-good endorphins that make you less stressed and more happy. Laughing releases emotions, and it’s a great way to expand the lungs and give them a good stretch. Go ahead, smile and laugh a little more!

READ A BOOK. Whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, get lost in a book. Scientifically, readers are the best kind of people to fall in love with. Readers will listen to you and truly understand you, and according to a study they’re wiser than nonreaders. If you’re not looking for love, read just for the fact that you may learn something new!

3

KEEP YOUR MIND SHARP. Crosswords, word searches, Sudoku, poker, brain games, you name it … they’ll help you keep your mind sharp. Your mind is the most important part of your body. No matter your age, it’s crucial to keep it sharp.

KEEP A JOURNAL. So many things can happen in a day, let alone a week, month, or even a year. A journal doesn’t have to be filled with lengthy entries. Write about an event that happened to you, or just put down the best part of your day. When you look back, you’ll remember things you may have forgotten about. Reading about the best part of your day, every day, is a great mood booster!

5 16

2 4

FLOSS. No more fibbing to the dentist. Make this a healthy habit. Regular flossing is shown to help prevent heart disease. Want to save money? Flossing can save you up to $150 per tooth for a cavity filling. Last but not least, flossing can prevent tooth loss. That’s all folks – floss your teeth!

so6ix.com | JANUARY 2015

6

GIVE HIGH FIVES TO PEOPLE JUST BECAUSE. Who doesn’t love a high five? Do it for the smiles.

SAVE YOUR LOOSE CHANGE IN A JAR FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR. Most of us aren’t very good about paying with exact change (except moms, because for some reason that’s their thing). The bottoms of our purses or pockets are usually filled with loose change. Start putting it in a jar at the end of the day or week, and keep filling that jar up for a year. Cash it out and you’ll

7

have a nice, easy little bonus.

8

LEARN AND MASTER A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. So maybe you didn’t pay too much attention in your high school or college language courses, but this is a skill that can not only make you more money (in some jobs), but will allow you to travel worry-free. Rosetta Stone is great if you can afford it, but there are also free apps and programs available, like Duolingo and Learn a Language. Put your mind to it, and you can master French in no time!

PUT BACK A LITTLE EACH MONTH. We agree, spending money is way more fun than keeping it, but if you put back even just $100 a month, you could have thousands of dollars saved by the time you’re 50. If you can’t wait that long, just save as much as you can each month and take a big trip at the end of the year, or buy yourself something special. You’ve earned it.

10

9

UNPLUG FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK. Disconnect to reconnect. Turn off that phone, delete those social media apps, put an automatic response on your emails and turn the TV off. Take an entire week to disconnect. (If you have to plug in to work, just get as disconnected as you can.) Electronics suck up so much of our time, and it’s important to get away from them once in a while. so6ix.com | JANUARY 2015

17

11

WRITE YOURSELF A LETTER TO BE OPENED IN FIVE YEARS. Take a minute to reflect, and ask a lot of questions. When your future self reads it, you’ll be shocked at how much has changed in five years, both in your own life and in the world.

ONCE A YEAR, GO SOMEPLACE YOU’VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Simply go to a new park or a restaurant you’ve been dying to try. If you’re lucky enough to travel, visit a new city, state or country at least once a year. You can learn a lot by getting out there.

13

TRY TO BE SILENT FOR ONE MINUTE A DAY. After that minute is up, write down every thought and feeling that comes into your head. You might be surprised at what all is going on in there. Reflect and react in a beneficial way.

NAME A BAD HABIT YOU HAVE AND MAKE A GOAL TO BREAK IT. Scientists say it takes 21 days to break a habit. Focus on something you know you should stop doing – smoking, biting your nails, gossiping, eating too much fast food – and make it a goal to break the habit.

15 18

12

BE KIND TO YOURSELF.

so6ix.com | JANUARY 2015

This one’s simple. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

14

16

FIND WHAT DOESN’T SERVE YOU, HELP YOU GROW OR MAKE YOU HAPPY, AND LET IT GO. Life is way too short to spend your precious time on people or things that are not good for you. Rid yourself of any toxicity in your relationships and habits.

DRINK MORE WATER. We could probably name 100 benefits that come from drinking more water, but we’ll just list a few. Your skin will be clearer and younger looking, your insides will be healthier, your hair will be shinier, and you’ll have less stress. The point we’re

17

driving at here is that it’s good for you!

18

LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY. This is a great one that our parents taught us. What you learn can be as complex or as simple as you want. You can learn how to spell a new word, find out about something going on in the world, or try a new food (and learn that you hate spinach). Make it a goal to increase your knowledge every single day. You’ll be glad you did.

LISTEN. Take the time to truly listen to people. Sometimes that’s all they need. Make an effort not to say something about yourself when someone tells you something personal.

20

19

LIVE. Just live. We gave you some guidelines, but you know what’s best for your life and your happiness. Live the most fulfilling life you can. You only get one.

EATS Though almost unknown until recently, Peruvian cuisine is conquering the palates of the most renowned chefs worldwide. Situated in the historic Kamps building on 25th and Classen, which was built in 1910, La Brasa is serving up a blend of fresh ingredients and the perfect fusion of traditional cuisines. They pride themselves on matching traditional Peruvian flavors as closely as possible on each dish, each of which is prepared fresh to order. On walking in, you can feel the rich history, which is overlaid with new décor with a modern and metropolitan twist on rustic. James Vu put a lot of heart and effort into his new concept. He handpicked everything, from the decorations right down to every single ingredient that goes into the flavorful dishes. After a successful run at a deli, Vu’s passion led him further into food, and his new venture is sure to excite and please taste buds all around. La Brasa’s staple is their charcoal-roasted whole chicken, which is marinated in more than 20 spices for 24 to 36 hours. It’s to die for! Vu’s main goal is to leave a legacy for his beloved children, and after sampling flavor-packed dishes and seeing the heart and passion behind this restaurant, there is no doubt he will succeed. Though only having been open for just a little over a year, La Brasa is already ranked number one on Urbanspoon’s list of top-recommended restaurants, and it has one of the highest ratings in Oklahoma City on OpenTable. La Brasa is able to accommodate large parties or a quaint date for two. With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, it’s the perfect Flavortown adventure to try with your lovebird. Having traveled all over, Vu has been inspired by some of the top chefs in the world. I was extremely impressed with La Brasa, from start to finish. The ambience, the presentation of dishes, the flavors and the uniqueness were all on point, and I can’t wait to go back.

What We Tasted: Pisco Sours – the national drink of Peru. Lime, egg whites, simple syrup and bitters. Portontino – Pisco Porton, St. Germain, lime juice, raspberry and champagne. World Cup Queso – canaria beans, guacamole, chorizo and jalapeños in homemade queso. Shrimp Ceviche – shrimp, onions, jicama, diced avocado, cucumber, mandarin oranges, jalapeños and rocoto peppers, marinated in lime juice. Pollo a la Brasa – delicious 20-spice chicken marinated 24 to 36 hours. Spit-roasted over charcoal to deliver a crisp, moist, succulent bird that is second to none. Served with aji verde (cilantro cream sauce) and aji amarillo (Peruvian pepper sauce). Lomo Saltado – stir-fried strips of beef filet mignon with tomatoes and red onions and seasoned potatoes with soy sauce and a pinch of garlic, served with jasmine rice. Miso-Glazed Chilean Sea Bass – served atop garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus.

www.astrology.com.au romantic side can be expected even though Jupiter occupies your Romance sector until August. Your social life should also be abuzz as your new moon because on the 11th house of friendships. Expect this year to be one filled with social activity.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18) Happy New Year Aquarius! There is a spiritual tone to your horoscope this year with the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Pluto in your 12th house. Look deeply into the nature of your past and how you have become who you are. MADI PONTIKES OneHealthyBod Personal Trainer

Health and fitness have been a large part of Madi’s life since she was young. She would run half marathons and a full marathon, and she eventually joined the OneHealthyBod bootcamps, which combine cardio, strength and endurance. Feeling good has always been a high priority for Madi. She just loves the rush of endorphins from a great workout. She loved seeing how the bootcamp-style workouts changed her body, and before she knew it, she was hooked! She took it one step further and trained for her first Bodybuilding Bikini show. After three competitions, Madi earned her pro card. Having worked so hard and feeling quite accomplished with the results of her dedication, she knew she wanted to guide others to achieve that same feeling. She became certified through the National Fitness Professionals Association (NFPA) and began her career in personal training in May 2014. Her favorite part of her job? Madi adores the people she works with and brags about her great clients, who make training so fun and rewarding! Her future plans are to continue to compete in multiple Pro Bikini shows in 2015, with the goal of going undefeated. She plans to qualify for and attend the Yorton Cup World Championships. She placed second in the fall of 2014, so she is set on winning in 2015. As for New Year’s resolutions, Madi does not believe in making those. Why? She believes that when she decides to do something, she should get started on it right away before it turns into an afterthought. It is too easy to let resolutions become more of an idea and less of an action. Madi’s piece of advice: do not focus too much on the number you see on the scale. In Madi’s perspective, the main goal in life is to be happy and healthy. Every body is beautiful in its own way, so try not to get too caught up in what you wish you could change about yourself. Instead, take time each day to revel in the amazing things your body can do. To find a way to get you feeling fit, healthy and happy, you can contact Madi at madi@ onehealthybod.com. 44

KEVIN MALAHY

Managing Partner & Head Coach of Deer Creek CrossFit

The last 10 years of Kevin’s life has been packed with great opportunities, accomplishments, moving around, and a whole lot of working out. Kevin Malahy has been a personal trainer for the last 10 years and a certified CrossFit coach for the last eight. Kevin has been an athlete his whole life. As captain of his football team, he had the opportunity in his senior year of high school to assist in weight lifting. He felt completely comfortable in that setting, and he eventually moved on to serving in the military. While serving, he met a few people that he liked to work out with, and he knew that was what he wanted to do. He started working on his certifications and trainings, which eventually got him where he is today. Kevin was doing CrossFit-style workouts before it became nationally recognized. He was focused in circuit training, and one day he was challenged by a CrossFit gym owner to come try it out. The more he did it, the more he respected it, and the more he respected it, the more he liked it. Kevin has been with Deer Creek CrossFit since it opened in January 2013. His piece of advice? Set specific attainable and measurable goals. He sees many people come in who say they want to lose 10 pounds, but they don’t know how or why, or they want to lose it by next week, which is not realistic. It is important to set measurable goals on a timeline that you can see yourself making progress on. Also, dig a little deeper on the “why.” You may soon realize it’s tied more to emotion than to just a “want.” Kevin plans to keep growing with CrossFit and with the gym. He has a passion for working with athletes and kids and he hopes to integrate into the schools. Kevin does some conditioning with Deer Creek swimmers and other athletes. He does not want to be limited to one demographic, and he plans to expand more into the Deer Creek community. In his spare time, he coaches wrestling and football at a local middle school. He enjoys giving back to the community, especially through the gym: they will be delivering presents to families in need this holiday season.
