Q

. I am 29 years old and am recently married. I don’t have a big savings account, but I do have some savings in my 401(k), is there anyway I can use that money now to help with expenses? … Mitchell 29, Oklahoma City

A . Mitch, I would tell you to consult a CPA or other tax professional before making any final decisions. This is a question a lot of young adults and families have asked over the past year, and there are different options available depending on your 401(k) guidelines.

In general, money withdrawn from your 401(k) prior to being 59 ½ years old carries a 10% penalty and will be seen as additional income that year. For example, a $Z1500 withdrawal assessed a $150 penalty and distribution taxed (ex. 28%). There is also the issue that most major plans do not allow for in-service withdraws, for instance, if you are still employed with the company. The only way to take a distribution is if you have left that company. There are, however, some options available. Some plans allow for 401(k) loans. You should check with your plan administrator to see if you have that option. If your plan offers loans it might be a better short term option that does not come with the penalties such as a withdrawal. A 401(k) loan is similar to bank loan. You can borrow a set amount of money (up to 50% of account) within a certain time frame (usually 5 years max) and you pay a set interest rate. Most advisors do not recommend 401(k) loans as a traditional lending vehicle, due to the difference between pre-tax and after tax dollars, but it is better than taking an early withdrawal with penalties. It is, however, an option and in hard times might be better source of funding for emergencies than something like a credit card

which carries extremely high interest rates. The last way that you can get money from your plan is a hardship withdrawal. These are very specific areas that come without penalty. Areas include medical expenses, some home purchases, college tuition, funeral expenses, and major uncovered damages to primary residence. Again, consult a plan and tax advisor for details and availability.

Q

. I have credit card debt and the interest keeps me from paying it off. Is there anything I can do to pay it off more quickly, or lower the payments without putting down a huge payment? … Jessica, 28, Edmond

Butts and Guts: Physical fitness is of the utmost importance when it comes not only to our appearance, but also to our health. When it comes to problem areas like your butt and your gut, here are a few suggested workouts that will help tone you up. Butts: Walking Lunges: This exercise will hit the whole thigh. Do not perform these if you have never workout before or if you have really bad knees. Tips: Make sure your knee does not pass the plane of your toe in a forward motion and do not descend below a 90 Degree angle with your knee. 3-4 sets of 10-15 reps with each leg. Stiff Leg Dead Lift: This exercise will hit your hamstrings and glutes (butt). Tips: Descend with the weight until your hamstrings stretch. Maintain a normal curve in your back and a slight bend in your knees. Move at your hips. 3-5 sets of 15-20 reps with moderate weight.

Guts: Cable Crunches: This exercise is great because you can vary the weight and angle of pull. Tips: Just move your rib cage by expanding and contracting the abs. There is no need to move your pelvis. Maintain a neutral pelvic tilt. Squeeze and flex the abs and go slow. 3-5 sets of 15-20 reps. Roll Ups: (a.k.a. reverse crunches): I like this exercise because it takes the neck out of the equation. Lay of your back on a bench press with your low-back pressed into the bench. Start with your hips slightly bent a little past a 90 degree angle. Slowly raise your lower back up off the bench as you roll your hips off the bench and raise your legs. Think, “I am pole-vaulting.” Tips: Do not lower your legs to far down. This will just work your hipflexors, not your abs more. 3-5 sets of 10-20 reps. This is just a sample workout that you could do every other day. Your nutrition and cardio levels will be a large factor in having a hard stomach and rear end. You cannot spot reduce body fat. You must burn the fat off in order to really have hard “butts and guts.”

Music, time and again, is something that shapes our moods and attitudes, and sometimes even the direction of our lives. So, which artists have been the most influential over the last 50 years and shaped the way we hear and appreciate the sounds? Let’s take a look. Based on research done by the Recording Industry Association of America, the following list was compiled using record sales in the United States. Some of these will surprise you, others are easily assumed. Now, let’s dive into some of the most powerful and intriguing artists of modern American history.

10. Elton John - 70 million. Most

widely known for his song, “Candle in the Wind,” recorded twice; once for Marilyn Monroe, and a second time after Princess Diana’s death. It is estimated that he has sold over 200 million records worldwide.

9. AC/DC - 71 million. This Australian

band stormed America’s radios in 1977 with their album “Highway to Hell” going gold on U.S. charts in 1979.

8. Barbara Streisand - 71 million. With

two Academy Awards, nine Grammies, four Emmys, and a special Tony Award, she has more than earned her way into the Top 10.

7. Pink Floyd - 74.5 million. Planet Rock radio station held a poll questioning the greatest album of all time, and “The Dark Side of the Moon,” won out, beating AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Meat Loaf. 6. Billy Joel - 79.5 million. From his first hit “Piano Man,” an undeniable classic, to “Only the Good Die Young,” and “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” Joel’s music is memorable, to say the least.

5. Eagles - 100 million. “Hotel California”

is a song that depicts the entire decade and culture of the 70’s. The southern California rock brings to mind the easy-going attitude of people.

4. Led Zeppelin - 111.5 million. Revolution-

ary in their approach to rock in roll, Led Zeppelin was the harder alternative to the poppy rock that the Beatles produced. Their legendary “Stairway to Heaven,” closely rivals the popularity of the Eagles “Hotel California.”

3. Elvis Presley - 120 million. Elvis took blues, jazz, country, folk, and many of what would be today’s genres, and created music that had variety. Elvis helped a racist culture accept a genre of music that was primarily accredited to African Americans. He inspired countless artists, despite his tragic end. 2. Garth Brooks - 128 million. Garth Brooks has six albums that achieved diamond status by the Billboard Music Charts. He is believed to have sold 220 million records worldwide. 1. The Beatles - 170 million. The Beatles have been labeled the number one greatest group of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, and the Billboard Music Charts. With countless number one hits, it is no surprise to find these guys at the top.

We are all familiar with the country hit “Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places,” and these lyrics still seem to ring true. Oftentimes, we find ourselves confusing love with lust, and while there is a fine line between the two, our culture has shifted and there appears to be some confusion about their differences. Results of this misunderstanding can be failed relationships, and years of empty love and endless searching. To fully understand this concept, let’s look at some of the places where people meet one another. Bars, clubs, and parties are most commonly regarded as the top venues to meet people. Relationships can form out of bar introductions, but more often than not, these relationships fail. Let’s look at the social norm for this kind of environment: generally, people are heading to bars and clubs to be seen by others. It is always important to be looking their best at all times, in case Mr. or Ms. Right Now comes along. Throw alcohol into the mix, and inhibitions are out the window. This is where the confusion between love and lust can come into play. We’ve already established that parties, clubs, and bars are generally lust-filled places. When we want to drink and be merry, we head out on the town.

However, people mature and naturally begin to desire a relationship with substance. When we begin looking for more than a fling, we frequently find ourselves right back where we started: at the bars. The results will be the same as they were before. There is potential to find love at a club or a bar, but those instances are few and far between. Failed relationship attempts can affect a person psychologically. They often believe that there is something wrong with them, or that they just aren’t good enough for anyone to stay with long-term. These thoughts of inadequacy are false, however, because there is someone out there for us all, you just have to know where to look. Sometimes it helps not to look at all. Being still and allowing love to happen on its own is often the best approach. It is important to note that there are people who frequent the bars who long for a healthy, long-term relationship, but they are not likely to be parading around asking for one. If you are looking for a serious relationship, it is my advice to look in places where you can really get to know someone on a more personal level, where there is little interference. Research shows that places like Church, the supermarket, bookstores, and the gym rank in the top ten best places to meet people. The key is to think like person you would like to meet. I suggest also considering the following places when looking for a companion: Work, parties of mutual friends, weddings, and social and community organizations. Start looking for love in the right places, and you may just find what you’ve wanted all along.

toric outfit would need charisma, charm, and passion in their blood. Maybe you love fantasy renaissance, and this era in particular transforms your imagination back to a time where the wizard, warlords, and knights battled to gain power and supremacy in their newly developed worlds. In the end your tough macho exterior is protected by human armor, but your true intimate nature is what wins the heart of the fairytale Princess.

Batman Costume: This is a classic,

and seems to be a favorite among people who love to be tough and mysterious. You have a big heart though, looking out for the vulnerable, and that is why this character appeals to you. This is a great suit with high-tech accessories accompanying the outfit. Don’t forget the design will expose all your physical attri-

Every one of us has a story to tell. Every life is valuable and unique. I love reading autobiographies of interesting individuals. Being a girl in the fashion industry, I’ve always been fascinated with the lives of fashion designers. Diane Von Furstenberg is one of my favorites. There is a litany of fine descriptors for Diane: strong, passionate, outspoken, powerful, independent. DVF is very accomplished in her business, and it feels as though the older she gets, the younger her consumers are, and that keeps her young and more relevant. By the age of 29, DVF was on the cover of Newsweek, achieving her goal of success at a young age. She believes that fear is not an option, so she always tries to face it head on. She loves to be alone, but she is never lonely, and describes her own style as effortlessly elegant and sexy. The word “effortless” is very important; it creates an ease and confidence because there is nothing more beautiful than a confident woman. DVF is best known for introducing the knitted jersey and the wrap dress that happened almost by accident. It has a traditional shape, like a kimono, without buttons or a zipper, and wraps around the body. The difference is that it was that it was created in jersey material and was tied

to the body, therefore accenting a woman’s shape. By using different prints and styles, the dress became more and more sexy. Diane Von Furstenberg has inspired many generations with her wrap dress. DVF understands fabrics, color, prints, and shapes very well. She loves for women to be themselves, and doesn’t like anything that is forced. The mission behind her clothing is to celebrate strength and confidence. The clothes emphasize femininity and spirit with colored prints, and have been described as “timeless.”

PISCES Your constructive vision is growing, and in par-

ticular, after the 24th you will feel the full weight of your responsibilities on your shoulders. Realize, however, that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. All eyes will be on you at this critical point in the year, when you will be called upon to show mastery of your talents to lead others both professionally and ethically, and to balance that with the other personal requirements that you have in life, namely your relationships with family and friends.

ARIES After the 9th you can meet an exciting, stimulating person who may have an important part to play in your life. You will admire this person’s individuality. It may or may not become a sexual or romantic relationship, but rest assured when Venus and Mars affect the romantic zone of your horoscope – which they will at this time – there’s no doubt you will have an instant attraction to someone you meet during this phase of your life.

TAURUS It’s very important to recognize your own good-

ness and strengths. Around the 18th when Venus enters into a favorable relationship with the Sun, you will feel aware of what you can and can’t do. There’s also an opportunity to you to connect with older friends who are wiser and who can advise you on strengthening your talents and achieving more in life. Take heed of what they advise.

A more amusing and fun time can be expected from the 10th till the15th. Plenty of entertainment is on the cards with parties and other social events cramming your diary. It’s also likely you’ll feel more zest and vigour for life and will find yourself in the midst of a younger group of people. There may be the possibility of meeting someone who can help further your creative interests or some wok project through your social connections.

CANCER You’ll develop a new relationship with someone at this time that may be based wholly and solely on your intellectual connection. Initially there may be an intense psychological drama that plays out but this is only because you’ll be feeling each other out and trying to gain a greater understanding of your philosophies and whether or not you are compatible. For those of you working in an environment that requires manual exertion, please be careful between the 28th and 30th. Overexertion can lead to strain and injury.

LEO You’ll be asked to help solve some riddle or problem this month as evidenced by Mercury moving through your zone of thinking. The task may be a difficult one but you’ll be up to the task after the 5th so accept the challenge. This may be one of those periods when the payoff is not necessarily money, but your good name will be enhanced as a result and your reputation can grow. Over and above this, you’ll enjoy the challenge of resolving an issue both your own and others’ satisfaction.

SCORPIO The health of an older member of the family may come into question, particularly after the 8th. Hospitals, asylums and other places which are not all that pleasant, but mainly of a medical proclivity will draw your attention. Some of you may choose to do some compassionate work that has nothing to do with responsibilities to relatives or friends who may be unwell or needing help. It could just be that you feel as if you owe your community some service and this would be a good time to do so.

SAGITTARIUS Your mind is completely scattered between the 5th and the 7th and this is due to the combined influence of Uranus and Mercury. These two planets activate your restlessness and make it hard for you to concentrate or achieve any lasting results in your work. Speak with friends between the 8th and 11th because they can open new doors and help you connect with a new network of people. This has equal value socially as much as commercially. This is a time when you can mix a little business and pleasure.

CAPRICORN Your mental state has to be perfectly in tune with your bodily state from the 25th till the 27th. If you are hell bent on doing something great in life it will be invalidated if your convictions aren’t true. Why are you doing what you do? Is it to impress someone? Is it for glory and adulation? Or do you genuinely love what you are doing? If love is your motive, you’re on the right path.

AQUARIUS The way in which you handle your responsibilities this month will determine the outcome of karma for a long time to come. You must be patient to realize the maximum effect of the efforts you put in now. But, don’t jump the gun and don’t be too hard on yourself. All good things come to those that wait. The Sun and Saturn are responsible for this new phase in your life and this commences between the 1st and the 4th of October.

VIRGO This month is one of considerable financial responsibility. The Sun with Saturn in your zone of finance is challenged by the Moon between the 1st and the 10th. You can’t afford to be emotional about finances and the way money is spent or saved. In other words, you have to be ruthless. You may try to make decisions with your heart but that won’t work.

LIBRA Your inspiration is a great tonic for friends and family throughout October. You can help others along the path of their own creative needs. But you do need to exercise care, especially after the 16th. Outlandish, hare-brained schemes that have no practical utility could cause you to lose some respect amongst your peers. It’s a good idea to draw a clear line in the sand between your professional obligations and your creative or inventive quirkiness. The two just won’t mix.

BRANDY MORRIS

The Oklahoma State Cowboys may have had a setback with their loss to Houston, but they are not allowing that to detour their BCS goals. The key may boil down to a few points, execution of plays and communication among the players. “Everybody has got to be on the same page on the offensive line,” OSU center, Andrew Lewis said. “Once we are set, everyone else has to know what they are doing.” Lewis, quarterback Zac Robinson, and wide receiver Dez Bryant all seem to be communicating on the same page. Last year, fans watched as Robinson and Bryant connected repeatedly. The two have developed telepathy in knowing where the ball is going to go. This year is not any different from last year. The connection is still there. “Dez knows where I am going to put the ball, and I know where he can go up and get it,” Robinson said. “Our goal is to put it in a spot where the defense can’t get it, when we do that it’s tough to beat, and Dez obviously makes great plays.” Robinson is a solid quarterback. He has the ability to scramble and make plays happen. “Zac has confidence, if he doesn’t see anyone open, he tucks the ball and runs,” Lewis said. Robinson and Bryant have been playing together since 2007, and have created a great chemistry on and off the field. “We both just love to play football, we never take ourselves too seriously,” Robinson said. “And most of the time we are on the same page, that has helped us out a lot.” Robinson has connected with Bryant for 29 touchdowns, which is more than any other passcatch combo in the nation, and is rewriting the record books for OSU. He has the record for touchdown passes at 56. He has surpassed the former quarterback and now Coach Mike Gundy’s record of 8,463 yards in total offense. He needs 1,163 yards to break Gundy’s record of passing yards.

OSU INTERVIEW (cont.) Bryant is making marks in OSU’s record books as well. He is third in all-time at OSU with 29 touchdowns and has tied Darrent Williams and Barry Sanders records with three career punt returns for touchdowns. He is No.11 in all-time at OSU with 194 points. He remains fourth in all-time at OSU with 2,425 receiving yards and is fourth all-time at OSU with 147 career receptions. Bryant leads the nation with 29 career touchdown receptions and in career yards per catch at 16.5 and leads the nation with 86.6 receiving yards per career game played. He is third in the nation with three career punt returns for scores and ninth in the nation with 548 punt return yards in his career. October will mark the beginning of conference play for the Cowboys. The Cowboy’s bye week is Oct.3. They will need the down time to get healthy, as several players are playing banged and battered. The team will travel to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies on Oct.10. The following week they celebrate homecoming, and play Missouri on Oct. 17.

COSTUMES (cont.) that’s not a problem, because not only do you want to save the world, but also share your appeal with a lovely lady. Cat Costume: Halloween wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t see this feline creature prowling around at your favorite party. To play this vixen, you need to have independence Cleopatra Costume: Probably one of the most memorable women in Egyptian history. Wearing this outfit tells others that you love control and power. You have complete confidence in your physical appearance, and you use that to your absolute advantage to hypnotize the crowd. You also thrive on attention, and you get it by showing off your flashy gold jewelry, from the sensual Egyptian influenced dress, to the infamous decoration headpieces shaped as serpents. I hope I helped with your decision this year, and who knows, maybe you might go against your character this year and dress up as something different for Halloween. Instead of being that Princess, maybe you can go as a Devil. Perhaps if you normally find yourself following a western theme, shock everyone and go as a Fairy. Whatever you decide to dress up as, remember that it’s one time out of the year that you can let your inhibitions go, and not only let people laugh with you, but also allow them laugh at you.
