L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F Let me just go ahead and get this off my chest that I am a little (a lot) obsessed with this issue and time of year. The crisp air has started to make its move on in, the leaves are slowly but surely changing to pure beauty and falling, and I’m into everything home interior at the moment. If I wasn’t in the magazine world (which I absolutely love), I would like to imagine I’d find myself running a cute little blog of DIY and home subjects from redoing a home or space all while showcasing my photography and eating a cutesy cupcake, yes I had to add that in there. This issue, as you’ll see, is everything home and living. Besides the do-it-yourself projects, I’d have to say I absolutely love the ladies that are Okies (one at heart) and are showcasing the chic and fun side of home interiors. I know that I personally would never put home and living and Oklahoma together as a market, but I was pleasantly surprised. We have such a market for DIY, repurposing, chic interiors, fun lifestyles, contemporary pieces, vintage finds, and more. You don’t have to be standing in the middle of SoHo, NYC or Highland Park, Dallas (even though I’m madly in love with those places). The beauty of home and living is right here in our backyard and being made into something great by our Oklahomans. Take a read through our many different home and living pieces that can help you to organize your kitchen or get some beautiful handmade art on the bland wall even if you have never seen yourself as the crafty type. Push your

boundaries, try new things, and change it up from time to time, this life is too grand to be anything but boring! This is normally where I’d give my closing statement and say toodles, but I just have to take a moment to brag about Zorbas Mediterranean Cuisine. Our food review at Zorbas, which you’ll find on pages 46 & 47, was nothing short of phenomenal. I have woken up every day since and have craved a gallon of their house made creamy hummus and I Just feel like you needed to know that. Stop what you’re doing and go try their food; you won’t regret it. I hope you enjoy this issue and the month of November as it symbolizes many great things. Enjoy your friends and family and don’t forget to stop and give thanks for even the smallest of things, for those are usually what matter most. The whole idea of a home is to have a place that displays your taste and personality, truly showing your character. Your home says a lot about you. CONS As with any type of building material, there can be disadvantages. One downfall is that the containers are not really suited for climates that have extreme heat or extreme cold. (We’re looking at you, Arizona and Alaska.) They can be insulated, but many do not want to go through the trouble or spend the money to insulate one of these. Unless you’re the architect or builder, container-housebuilding specialists come few and far between. Also, as with any other material, you have to keep in mind the weathering it will take. Eventually rust can become an annoyance. To try to prevent

Not only are they now easy to grab and all in one spot, but also they’re pretty to look at.

Spray evenly with chalkboard paint. • Let the lids completely dry. Use chalk color of your choice to write your labels • Fill the jars and set them in the pantry, on the counter, or fill up a drawer! 16

My hand is raised high! This tedious task will get you organized, cooking recipes you forgot you had, and filling up the drawer with new items. We love the idea of a wooden box that you can hand paint, cover with craft paper and modge podge, or a vintage box that has stolen your heart. • Cut the cardstock to fit end to end in the box, leaving a spot for a tab, or you can buy pre-made tabs at a craft or supply store. • Label the cardstock such as soups, desserts, snacks, etc. • Print or handwrite your recipes on to note cards and place in corresponding category. Gallery walls are the perfect way to hang what you want, fill up a lot of space, and make the entire wall a focal point in the room. What is great about this, there’s no rules. Obviously you’re going to need some framed pieces to hang and maybe a couple of pieces that aren’t necessarily framed, but that’s totally up to you. We love the idea of framed art that is a combination of some that’s handmade and some that’s bought, but again that is totally up to your tastes and skill set. Credit: Brit.co

y p p a H Dots ‘Cause I’m happy! These dotted canvases make the perfect addition to any room. They add a little flair that is often needed. What’s great here is you don’t have to just stop at one canvas, make a square with four, nine, or place the canvases into rows. The world is your canvas, literally in this case. Choose any colors that fancy you! We love the idea of a pop of color that isn’t necessarily a theme throughout your space or sticking within the same color scheme but choosing different shades for a more organized look. Steps: • Believe it or not, these canvas polka dots were made with a small potato that had been cut, but you can also use a polka dot sponge paint brush • Start by measuring the canvas into even rows of where the dots will be placed • Choose colors that you think would compliment your space or add a pop of color; you can stick with shades of blue and gray or go for every color of the rainbow to add color to a monotone home. • Start dipping the brush into your desired paint color and transferring to the canvas • Let dry and hang! so6ix.com | NOVEMBER 2014

Materials: • Paper • Paint (optional) • Glue • Canvas or Wood Panel • Circle Punch Cutter • Pencil Steps: • Using the measuring tape, divide the board into equal horizontal lines not further apart than the diameter of the circle cutouts. Mark them with a pencil. • Using a circle punch cutter, cut out circles in the desired paper, or use white paper and spray paint it after it’s laid out and glues, to become your desired color • Using glue, layer and overlap the circles starting from the bottom and moving up to each row. • Cut off the access paper on the edges of the surface • Let the lids completely dry. It’s the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and we are thankful for many things, a few of them being for delicious recipes and a chicly set table. We are major fans of tradition, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spice it up a little with additional recipes, a fun new way to set the table, and of course DIY decorations. It’s that time of year we can eat, drink, and be thankful together (in style)!

Happy Thanksgiving Banner We’ve made something similar for Halloween, except out of burlap and paint, remember? This time we’re spicing it up with a little glitter or colored paint and on actual letters not burlap. This is perfect to hang on the wall behind your table setting or hang in the entry way as guests arrive. Credit: HGTV.com Materials: • Wooden or paper letters • Modge Podge • Glitter or paint • Twine • Hot Glue & Glue Gun Instructions: • We’re totally leaving it up to you here what you want to spell for the holidays! We went with, Give Thanks. Choose the letters needed to spell your saying and lay them out. • Using paint or modge podge, paint your letters evenly and sprinkle with glitter if desired. • Once dry, flip the letters over, face down, and place hot glue on the back of the tops of the letters. You may do one letter at a time so the hot glue doesn’t dry and place the twine into the glue. Pull fairly taut. • Hang in desired area and enjoy!

A Runner & Pumpkin Filled Table Our advice: every table needs a runner. This is the piece that can completely pull the table together, add a pop of fall colors or a touch of rustic-ness (we made that word up). The one pictured is from Crate & Barrel, but if you’re up for a DIY runner – go for it girlfriend [or boyfriend]! This is the season for the pumpkin to shine! Check out your local farmers market or favorite grocery store and pick up an abundance of smaller sized gourds. You know us; we’re all about DIY. You don’t have to leave them completely plain, spice it up with a little paint or gold glitter to add some flair to the table. Credit: Brit.Co

Cranberry Ginger Fizz Have a delicious drink waiting for your guests as they sit down. This is sure to warm them up and give them a little refreshment before the indulging in delicious dishes begins. Club soda & cranberry can be served for those under 21. She showcases her chic and crafty life for all to see and it’s inspiring. Meet Brittany Here: 1. You grew up in New Mexico, what do you think about moving to Oklahoma and our art/design scene here? My appreciation for art/design was molded by my experiences growing up in New Mexico, a place I found to be rich with a variety of cultures and creativity. One of the many things I love about Oklahoma is how much the community supports local art and business, I’ve never experienced a place with so much local pride before. 2. Where do you get your inspiration/passion for decorating, creating, and art? Environments and photographs inspire me. Whether being in an eclectic pizza restaurant in the Plaza District, or a campsite, a friend's home, thumbing through a magazine or sailing through Pinterest, I'm always absorbing the images and environments around me. 3. What are your future plans or goals? I would love to merge my passion for early childhood education and art into one and write and illustrate children's books one day. I'm also currently in the processes of redesigning my blog and creating a source where I can share my thoughts and ideas and do more custom work, particularly couple/family portraits and wedding stationary suites. 4. What's your favorite spot in your home and why? Under our gallery wall on our big plush sectional. This is "my spot" and

Piece of advice to those who are looking to redecorate an area or add in some art? Don't give in to the temptation to complete or finish an area immediately. Start with what you've got and let the space or room evolve with meaning. Let yourself be surprised through the process! 6. Favorite color, go! RASPBERRY! 7. You created all of the art for your wedding (invitations, signage, programs, etc.). Where did you get your craftiness from? This credit goes directly to my mother. She ensured that I was surrounded with open-ended materials and tools as a child and always had her hands in some sort of project as well. I have vivid memories of her frequently moving furniture and art around the house, spending hours creating a mural on a wall at my grandmas house or her boutique, and constantly creating an environment, wherever she was, that was beautiful. 8. What's your favorite part about decorating, designing, and creating? Everything tells a story. Our homes tell the stories of our lives, what we value and who we are. The art I am able to create tells a story as well, and I enjoy taking those stories and communicating them through ink. 9. Tell us a fun and random fact about yourself! When people learn about what I do now I find that they are often surprised that I was Miss New Mexico USA 2011. I love sharing this fact because my year as Miss New Mexico USA and my experiences competing at Miss USA were equally humbling and formative to who I am now. I was teaching Pre-K at this time and when my students were learning about graphing I had them choose the color of my evening gown for Miss USA, which ended up being blue! EATS Upon walking in to Zorbas you can smell, feel and eventually taste authenticity that has been in the making for over 20 years. Heading the kitchen is executive Chef Nordeen Bennai that has an extensive background in cuisine around our city. He was chef at the well-known Café 501 for 13 years and has had his hands in many other restaurants around town. Growing up in Morocco, Bennai was constantly influenced and immersed into strong and diverse flavors. Upon coming over here 30 years ago, he brought with him a taste of home and it vibrantly shows in his dishes. There was not one thing we tasted that didn’t leave me saying “WOW.” You know the feeling with you walk into your mothers kitchen and you have a delicious home cooked meal where you can feel the love put into it and the flavors and authenticity of it are incomparable to anything else? That’s how I felt at Zorbas today. It was those bites of delicious dishes that tasted like they were made in my mothers kitchen with hours of love and layers of flavor. Chef Bennai is gluten free himself, so we can assure you there are delicious food allergy free options! Our senses were first awakened by the mango habanero margarita, deliciously surprising (if you like a little zing)! The Mediterranean twist on the Osso Buco was uh-maze-ing; we were on the bus to flavor town. Being such a hummus lover I’m pretty particular about my hummus, all I have to say is can I buy theirs by the gallon with a large spoon please? In all seriousness, the food, drinks, staff and overall experience were nothing short of amazing. I can’t wait to go back, ASAP!

COOKING WITH CHEF ROBINETT AUTUMN CHOP SALAD Serves 2 1 head Butter Lettuce 1 ea Honey Crisp Apple, small diced 1 oz Chopped Toasted Hazelnuts 2 oz Blue Cheese Crumbles 2 slices Bacon, cooked and crumbled 6 ea Mission Figs, quartered 4 T Olive Oil 1 ea Bottled Balsamic Reduction Preheat oven to 375F, core and chop the apple into small pieces, toss with 2 T olive oil, place on sheet pan and roast in the oven until soft and slightly browned. In the meantime, remove the core of the butter lettuce and roughly chop into bite size pieces, place in mixing bowl. Then, add hazelnuts, blue cheese, bacon, figs, and remaining oil, toss until well coated. Divide into two portions onto plates or in bowls, chill until apples are ready. Remove apples from oven when browned and softened and allow to cool slightly, then top salad with roasted apples, drizzle with balsamic reduction. Enjoy!

CARISSA STEVENS Founder & Owner of Scout Studios

Carissa Stevens grew up in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. She and her mother spent their time flying all over, to places like Hong Kong and Indonesia. They would find themselves at side street shops, where they would dig through materials and pieces and come back home with inexpensive items. Carissa’s notion was that these items would never amount to anything until she got her hands on them. It was in those moments that she thought, “I could see myself doing this forever.” Her dream is now a reality with Scout Studios, an e-commerce site and blog duo that allows Carissa to live out her passion for repurposing while documenting the process. Carissa prides herself on being able to find pieces in the most unlikely places. In fact, one of her favorite pieces came from on the side of the road on Big Trash Day and is now a beautiful green bamboo chest that would add a pop of color to any space. She is a firm believer in being able to find cool stuff anywhere, not in just the popular marked-up shops. Her advice: forget where you are and really see the piece for what it is. Forget that you’re not in a fancy shop in Dallas or New York City, and look at the piece’s bones. What are “bones,” you ask? Carissa explains: A piece with good bones, or a good structural base, is like a blank canvas. When something has good bones, it can be repurposed in almost any way. It’s important to stay away from things that are warped, molded or torn apart completely, because these don’t have the bones you’re looking for to ensure quality redoing. If it has good bones and you see a vision for it, snag it up! Carissa made a bold move when she started down this path. Scout Studios will sell a little bit of everything when it comes to décor, but we can assure you that it’s all being handpicked and personally redone by Carissa and her boyfriend, with the exception of upholstery. Some items, like pottery and blankets, will be sold as-is. Outside of her venture, Carissa immerses herself in the community and the arts. Each year she co-chairs a committee for the Arts Festival.
