Hello, April! It’s officially spring, guys! Maybe I was just a big baby this winter, but it seemed to last so long, with endless gray days and the coldest temps in a long time. I’ve never been more ready for it to warm up, for the sun to shine and for things to keep blooming! I’m welcoming April and all it brings with wideopen arms! As a foodie and an Okie, one of the best things about spring and warmer weather is all of the great local food trucks and patios. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to know what to try this season. So we are giving you a spring preview of some unique food trucks that are serving up seriously delicious cuisine. Find the truck and then find yourself an outdoor spot to sit back and enjoy it. One of my favorite things we hear from our readers and followers is how much they love it when our food issues center around some type of theme and feature dishes from local spots around town. Many people have shown us how they have created lists of featured dishes to try, and some even carry around

the magazine with an actual Sharpie to cross things off as they go! So this time around we’re sharing some of the best meat dishes from around the metro, for all you carnivores out there. Food issues are always so fun to work on. The Oklahoma food scene is something to be seriously proud of. The owners, chefs, workers and everyone in between are all working hard to ensure Oklahoma is overflowing with what we’d argue is some of the best food in the world. I really encourage you to get out there this spring and support the local food scene. Great food, great people and great times are to be had here and I urge you to partake in it. Happy Eating!

PLATO’S PROVISIONS (405) 464-3041 Plato’s Provisions is one of the newest food trucks on the scene, having opened in August 2018. Husband and wife duo Taylor and Clinton have a passion for cooking and saw a demand for more vegan food in OKC, and so Plato’s Provisions came to life! This mobile eatery is 100% vegan/ plant based, but you’ll have a hard time convincing meat eaters of that – because it’s literally so good and authentic-tasting. Their menu options are inspired by Middle Eastern/American fusion. Their most popular dish is their gyro, which is handmade in small batches using wheat flour and a blend of spices. Each serving contains around 15 grams of protein and is soy-free and never frozen! This truck is whipping up delicious vegan food that’s not only nutritious and satisfying but also relatable and convenient. After trying out Plato’s, we have a feeling you’re going to be inspired to incorporate more plant-based eating into your life. Taylor and Clinton are both young and ambitious, and we have a really good feeling this local concept is going to be around for a good while. We couldn’t be more excited.

TACO NATION (405) 456-9090 Tim & Leanne Ulrich, who we might just need to go ahead and refer to as the Taco King and Queen, have had a love for tacos and Mexican food for as long as they can remember. And what better way to spread that love than with a mobile taco bus? Growing up in Southern California, they ate loads of Mexican food, and they have so many fond memories of discovering all of the flavors in street tacos as the food artist brought the tacos to life. When an unlikely journey brought the California family to the heart of OKC, they brought their passion and knowledge with them. As they starting having friends over to their house for taco parties and dinners, Tim realized how much joy he gets from making food for people. The dinner party sizes and the love for tacos both continued to grow. They followed that joy and produced Taco Nation! Trust us when we say these tacos are one of a kind. We’ve eaten a LOT of tacos, and I’m not sure we’ve had a fresher, better-tasting taco, seriously. They’re making most things from scratch like their sauces (that you’re going to want to drink with a straw). They buy and utilize local ingredients when and where they can like the microgreens, locally sourced tilapia and ground beef! They’re putting love into every single order. For the people, by the people.

ROCKIN ROTOLO (405) 561-1475 Rockin Rotolo has been whipping up to-die-for pasta dishes since 2017. Jennifer Marshall and James Etzler first met in 2014 and found a common love, talent and passion for creativity and cooking. James was a mixologist for Wsky Lounge and Savings and Loan Co., and Jennifer had a penchant for making insanely good pasta dishes. When a food truck became available for purchase, they took the leap and put their dreams and hard work into this mobile pasta heaven, if you will. Rockin Rotolo is serving up Italian dishes from scratch – yes, everything from scratch. The pasta – yes, seriously – is from scratch and so are all of the sauces, and even the fresh-made ground Italian pork sausage. They’re incorporating fresh, local and organic vegetables into each dish, so you know you’re getting quality. For our friends with dietary needs, they always have plant-based and paleo options on the menu. One of our favorite things about the truck, besides the obvious (the food), is how much it gives back to the community. You’ll often see this truck out helping others. The menu changes seasonally based on local ingredients. It’s not often you can get a made-from-scratch meal, so when you see Rockin Rotolo out and about, be sure to stop by. You’ll thank us later.

OHMYGOGI OKC (405) 640-2890 Oklahoma’s first Korean/Mexican Fusion truck, OhMyGogi OKC, is taking the city by storm. Owner Michael Park has been operating OhMyGogi OKC for about a year now and the following has quickly grown. OhMyGogi OKC is actually the sister truck to the thriving and widely popular original truck in Houston, run by his little brother Nathan Chang. The opportunity was available and now the Oklahoma truck came into our food scene with a little twist and some subtle changes from the original truck. OhMyGogi’s food is a little touch of Korean influence wrapped up in popular Mexican dishes. Their main ingredient, Gogi Steak (short for bulgogi), is a very popular Korean BBQ-style shredded rib eye steak marinated in a sweet soy sauce blended with various herbs and spices. It packs a lot of flavor that you’ll very quickly realize you can’t get enough of. They throw it into some Oklahoma favorites like tacos, quesadillas, loaded fries, and burgers. You can even add Asian condiments like kimchi and spicy mayo. You might be a little hesitant about combining the Korean aspects with Mexican, but trust us – you’ll quickly get over your hesitation. It’s insanely good. This truck is producing only the highest-quality food and educating Oklahomans on the tasty world of Korean Gogi. We have a feeling if you try it once, it might just become your favorite food.

carnivore Even with the food world being taken over by dietary preferences like vegan, pescatarian and vegetarian, there are still a lot of die-hard meat fans – carnivores, if you will. Being a landlocked state, full of prairies, it’s no secret that Oklahoma has some of the best meats around. We sought out some of the best dishes from local restaurants across the metro for all you “meat and potato” loyalists. These savory dishes are all unique and packed with flavor. We suggest working your way through the list and trying them all! Photography: Lauren Wright

THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME The Greatest of All Time: the G.O.A.T. Think LeBron, Jordan, pizza, Federer, Apple – and now you have to include The G.O.A.T. Beef Jerky Company. Founded by J.R. Towe, the G.O.A.T. Beef Jerky Company began as a hobby. J.R. was gifted a dehydrator for Christmas one year, and he started experimenting with different jerky recipes until he perfected the texture and flavor. Of course, the jerky had to be reviewed by family and friends, but he didn’t want them to know he was the creator so the feedback would be unbiased. It passed with flying colors. They gave rave reviews and asked where they could get more – oblivious to the fact that the jerky was homemade by their own J.R. With a dream, passion and a lot of hard work, J.R. quit his corporate job and has since worked to build the G.O.A.T. Beef Jerky Company from the ground up. Now his highly praised product is available to the masses. J.R. wants his products to be the best of the best, so all the beef used is organic, meaning that the cattle are ethically raised with no growth hormones or antibiotics and have 80% free-range access to graze on the grass. This means you’re getting the highest-quality gourmet beef jerky with the best flavor. 44

so6ix.com | APRIL 2019

ORIGINAL The taste is outstanding and many flavor profiles comes to life in each bite, with the natural flavor of the beef standing strong. You’ll get hints of mustard and brown sugar that pull together a well-rounded original beef jerky flavor.

HOT The Hot recipe carries the same outstanding and unique flavor profiles but brings in a kick. It’s not overpowering, but just right if you like a little bit of spice. Instead of only using your typical cayenne spice, J.R. incorporates wasabi powder to give it that extra kick and a unique flavoring that you’ll crave. The brown sugar adds a nice balance on your palate, so you get a little sweet with the spicy.

We love springtime and we love local companies – and what better way to soak up the weather than with some local beer and jerky? With the help of G.O.A.T. and COOP Ale Works, Anthem Brewing Company, and Angry Scotsman Brewing, we’re giving you the 411 on what beers pair with this unbelievably good jerky.

EATS Let’s take a little culinary journey to South China, but without ever having to leave Oklahoma City, shall we? When you step into Kwan’s Kitchen, you are transported to a village in the south of China. You’re immediately immersed into a serene atmosphere with waterfalls and koi ponds and met with delicious smells from the handmade dishes coming from the kitchen. Kwan’s offers authentic Cantonese cuisine with a twist. Chef Kwan spent eight years as head chef of a French-Chinese restaurant in Belgium, and he always dreamed of opening up his own restaurant someday. With the help of his business partner Don Kerr, he’s brought the dream to life right here in Oklahoma City. Chef Kwan has put a lot of heart and careful creation into the menu. You’ll fine unique dishes that combine Oklahoma roots with Cantonese flavors. Kwan’s Kitchen is 100% locally owned and operated independently, but it is far from the Oklahoma perception of “mom-and-pop” Chinese. It’s an upper-class experience and you won’t find anything like it anywhere else in the state. Not only do the dishes and flavors separate them from the rest, but also the presentation. Forget what you thought about Chinese food coming in a white paper carton: these dishes are a work of art. During your experience, you’ll forget you’re sitting in Oklahoma. It’s such a unique and special feeling to be transported by the food and the atmosphere to a whole new country. Kwan’s is upscale, but without the snobby attitude, and it’s accessible to anyone. They even offer a casual lunch (and yes, you can get in and out quickly) where they offer 20+ high-quality and delicious items for only $10. It is one of few local Chinese restaurants with a full-service bar. They offer unbelievably great craft cocktails, and they also feature a separate French bistro menu. Kwan’s has been open for roughly a year now and they’re continuing to grow. They’ve put a lot of heart and soul into this place and you can feel it through and through. From the cuisine to the atmosphere, Kwan’s Kitchen is something special.

They offer delicious eats like pizza, salads, snacks and desserts. Definitely don’t miss out on their brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. They have an extensive drink menu with beers, ciders, wines and fantastic cocktails. Extra bonus: you can bring all of these into the theater with you! This is a spot you’re going to want to visit ASAP, trust us.

S US HI NE KO 4318 N. WESTERN AVE., OKC, OK 73118 405.528.8862 | SUSHINEKO.COM One of the longest-standing sushi restaurants in the state is a favorite for sure. Sushi Neko is locally owned and operated and their food is oh-so-delicious. They have an extensive menu and some of the freshest sushi you’ll ever eat – you’d never guess they’re in a landlocked state. They have creative rolls with ingredients like tempura bacon – yes, bacon! Our favorite rolls are the ones stuffed with cream cheese, because can you really go wrong with cream cheese on anything? The answer is no. If you’re not a sushi fan they have plenty of other menu items, like delicious steak, rice dishes, curry noodles and so much more. As the weather warms up, we recommend heading straight for their new renovated patio and enjoying a sushi roll or two.

BLACK WALNUT 100 N.E. 4TH ST., OKC, OK 73104 405.445.6273 | FACEBOOK.COM/BLACKWALNUTOKC Deep Deuce has a new restaurant – say hello to Black Walnut! Black Walnut is blending American cuisine with the neighborhood’s cultural history, making for eclectic and vibrant menus. When the weather is nice, you’re going to want to grab one of their delicious cocktails inspired by locales from Bali to Brazil and head to the spacious patios for happy hour. This concept comes from the creators of La Baguette Deep Deuce, so you know the food is good. Their menu is composed of four different parts: sweet and savory, fresh and light, smoky and satisfying, and casual and comforting. We recommend trying something from all of them. You won’t be disappointed.

SAUCED ON PASE O 2912 PASEO, OKC, OK 73103 405.521.9800 | SAUCEDONPASEO.COM A long-standing favorite in the Paseo district, Sauced on Paseo is still whipping out delicious pizzas. Sauced on Paseo makes pizza the New York way, with thin crusts, delicious cheeses and the best toppings. You can buy pizza by the slice and pair it with one of their fresh salads or go for an entire specialty pie. They have options like the Green Lantern, topped with Bartlett pear; the Loaded Hawaiian, which adds a kick with jalapeños, or the Gardenia, which loads on the veggies. Those are just a few. We recommend working your way through the menu. If you feel like you want to try them all, order the Suicide Pie – it’s one slice each of 8 different specialty pizzas! On nice weather days, grab a slice and head out to their patio to watch the Paseo come alive.

GIVING FOR GOOD

BEST FRIENDS OF PETS Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

FIDO 1 in 3 pets will go missing. They are more likely to make it back home with proper ID tags or microchipping.

In 2017 they completed 1,145 spays and neuters. 97% of these were for pet owners with limited income.

In 2017 they IDtagged 509 pets.

They work with 30 different vets and animal hospitals on their spay and neuter assistance program.

Best Friends of Pets has evolved throughout the years and gone by different names, but their mission has never changed: to help save pets. In 1994 they began helping to increase pet adoptions and improve conditions for pets in the metro. Now they are helping low-income families to spay, neuter and ID their pets to help reduce the number of homeless and euthanized pets at animal shelters. They operate a spay and neuter assistance program that makes it affordable for many pet parents in central Oklahoma. They work closely with 30 different participating veterinary and nonprofit clinics throughout the area. Based on your income and family size, you can apply for your pets and help stop the needless loss of life. Did you know 1 in 3 pets will go missing? BFOP wants to help stop this with proper identification. You can sign up for a $5 tag that comes with your name, address, phone numbers, pet’s name, and other information to help make sure your pets are safely returned home if they are lost. Best Friends of Pets is giving so many families the opportunity to protect their furry little best friends.

HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE

VOLUNTEER

Donations are used a lot of different ways, and you can make the difference in the life of a pet!

They’re always looking for volunteers for various projects and tasks, like marketing, checking requests for spay/neuter applications, making out packets, engraving pet IDs, writing content, and so much more.
