L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F

Happy August! It sure is hot out there, but I’m trying not to complain, since summer is quickly dwindling away and I know that I’ll be sad to see it go. I’m trying to soak up the rest of summer for all it’s worth (even though I may secretly be a tad excited for fall). If you or your kiddos are heading back to school soon, I recommend getting out and about a few more times before the schedules kick back in. There are so many great activities and adventures our city offers; there really is something for everyone! Whether you’d like to give indoor skydiving a try at iFLY, cozy up in a quiet corner of the Northwest Library, get up close and personal with wild animals at the OKC Zoo or head out to an OKC Energy soccer game to cheer them on, we know you’ll have a blast making your way through our Oklahoma Adventures & Activities Guide. I encourage you to make memories where and when you can, no matter how big or small the activity may be. This issue highlights something near and dear to my heart: art! I’ve always had a passion for art, both creating and observing. Did you know how artsy Oklahoma is? We give you a small glimpse in this issue with our mural feature. Some seriously talented individuals have put their art on display on our city’s walls. Some of the murals are prominent and some you might have to dig a little deeper to find. I encourage you to get out and explore to find these one-of-a-kind beauties.

Lastly, if you’re trying to be more health conscious (I feel like many of us are making strides) and want to find something truly healthy, check out our food review of Organic Squeeze! Many of us know and love Organic Squeeze for their smoothies and fresh-pressed juices, but now they’re tackling a whole new ball game with delicious clean eats for breakfast, lunch and dinner at their Midtown location. You only thought you craved pasta before. Once you’ve had their spiraled sweet potato noodles it’ll be all you can think about. I hope you enjoy this issue and find a few more days in your summer to get out and explore. Life is too short to miss out on adventure, and with all of the resources our city offers and the continual growth we’re seeing, we hope you’ll step out and take advantage. Enjoy the rest of your August: invite someone to do something new with you, smile at a stranger, make new memories and just love people. Lots of love,

Lauren Wright

Wheeler Criterium Downtown OKC Airpark, 1701 S. Western Ave., OKC wheelercriterium.com Oklahoma City is home to a premier cycling event each month, the Wheeler Criterium! Hosted every Tuesday until September 9 at the Downtown OKC Airpark, this activity is ideal for family and friends of all ages looking for a way to add some excitement to a typical weeknight. Anyone can enter, whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a brand new racer. Everyone who registers gets to pin on a number and ride. Registration opens at 4:30 p.m. before the races begin. A few years ago, DNA Racing was looking for a spot where they could host a weeknight cycling event in OKC and found the perfect spot in the Wheeler District. The Wheeler Criterium isn’t just about bike races, it’s about community: bringing people together on a Tuesday night, visiting with friends and making new ones. There’s no cost to come hang out and also, come hungry: a few food trucks fuel each evening with delicious eats. Races happen at 5:30, 6:05 and 6:50 p.m.

Bricktown Beach 3rd Base Plaza at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark downtownokc.com The nearest beach to Oklahoma City is a little over 500 miles away, or a roughly ninehour drive – so why not bring a beach right to our city? Downtown Oklahoma City, Inc., with the help of JE Dunn Construction Group, built a temporary summer beach park in front of the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The sandy beach is equipped with many activities, like sand volleyball equipment, outdoor games, hammocks, lounge chairs with umbrellas, and more. This is a great place for people of all ages to come out, hang loose and play without having to travel too far. The Bricktown Beach is free to enter and will be open daily to the public, 24 hours a day, until late summer.

Northwest Library – Metropolitan Library 5600 N.W. 122nd St., OKC metrolibrary.org We know one great way to beat the heat of summer, and that’s to stay indoors at any of the awesome branches of the Metropolitan Library. We particularly love the recently built (2012) Northwest Library that sits at MacArthur and 122nd in northwest OKC. The 35,000-square-foot modern library’s features are representative of Oklahoma, with its study areas, enclosed in glass, that resemble oil derricks, and woodslat walls that are reminiscent of oilfield equipment crates. If you’re looking for a spot to take the kiddos, they host numerous events throughout the week, like storytimes, Children Reading to Dogs, and science and technology development events. Tens of thousands of books, magazines, newspapers, CDs, DVDs and more await you at the Northwest Library. 12

We personally can’t get enough of animals, and if you’re like us or you love to get out and explore, then you’ll LOVE the Oklahoma City Zoo. One of our favorite things about the Zoo is that they participate in numerous cooperative Species Survival Plan projects and are dedicated to the conservation of rare and endangered wildlife. With a diverse animal collection of 1,900 species, the OKC Zoo is a true adventure from start to finish. From the wildlife to the botanical garden and aquarium, there is something to see and do for everyone. You can now go behind the scenes and get up close and personal many of the animals like lorikeets, stingrays, goats, Galapagos tortoises and more. Also, twice a day you can come face-to-face with the tallest animals on earth and feed the majestic giraffes! How cool is that? Everyone on staff, including volunteers, at the zoo are extremely knowledgeable, helpful and oh-so-nice. They can answer just about any question you might have (and for us that’s about 452). The zoo keeps evolving and growing throughout the years, making it such an unforgettable experience, We recommend the Zoo-It-All ticket where you get to enjoy unlimited rides, shows and attractions and get the opportunity to feed select animals. And if you’ll be frequenting the zoo often (like us) then we recommend you look into a Zoo Membership for extra perks! There’s more than enough to see, touch, interact with, ride and experience all day at the Zoo – what are you waiting for?

Oklahoma City Energy FC Taft Stadium, N.W. 27th & May Avenue energyfc.com For a long time Oklahoma has had three major sports teams to be fans of: OU, OSU and the Thunder. Now we can add a fourth to that list – the OKC Energy! This soccer team is a part of the United Soccer League, and their home is the newly renovated and improved Taft Stadium. The home games are packed with great (and loud) energy from fans, delicious food trucks and stands, memorabilia, and a kids’ zone. There are many factors that make this such a fun activity. For starters, it’s a much different atmosphere than football or basketball. It’s a whole new experience! Whether you’re a die-hard soccer fan or know little to nothing about the sport, we think this is a must-do! Tickets start as inexpensive as $14 and can be purchased online or at the ticket booth.

Street Street Art Art Photography: Lauren Wright

Oklahoma’s art scene is ever-growing, and everywhere we look our town is being painted. Murals are popping up left and right throughout the city, crafted by both talented artists of our state and by out-of-town artists who are just passing through. Mural art is expanding into a whole new world of mind-blowingly beautiful pieces that can span hundreds of square feet. Some are prominent, on heavily traveled streets, and others you may have to dig a little deeper around town for, but once you find them we know you’ll be in awe of the raw and beautiful talent on display.

The Paramount in downtown Oklahoma City is now home to a humongous mural of New Zealander Steven Adams. Mr. G is a famed New Zealand graphic artist based in Sydney, Australia who displays his work all over the world. On his way to Minneapolis to spraypaint a piece in tribute for Prince, he made a stop in Oklahoma City to show some love for the New Zealand idol with a mural. Welcome Welcome to the Plaza the

Artist: Dusty Gilpin | treeandleafclothing.com Where: Plaza Walls Dusty’s art is fairly straightforward. He’s not much of a surrealist; he likes to draw cartoons, but his main goal is almost always to share a message. Dusty wanted to paint a mural to recognize a hometown hero or living legend, so he chose Domingo and Charles – two locals who helped define what the Plaza is. It’s a community, not a shopping center; everyone is welcome in the Plaza. This is a tribute to everyone involved in the Plaza community: the people who have lived in the neighborhood for decades, the new business owners,

Plaza Alley Walls plazawalls.org

Plaza Walls is a curated, rotating mural project in the Plaza District of Oklahoma City. The vibrant project was launched in September 2015 by co-curators Dylan Bradway and Kristopher Kanaly with the approval of the Oklahoma City Arts Commission and Urban Design Commission. Artists contact them requesting to paint, and they also reach out to artists to encourage them to participate. The downside is that they only have a oneyear permit that ends toward the end of September of this year, so they are trying to paint as much as possible up until then. They will be seeking a 2-3 year extension (fingers crossed) to continue this amazing project. They hope to add more property to the project and slow down the rotation of murals. The Indiana wall is currently changed every month. The Plaza Walls project is home to 5,160 square feet of over 30 murals by more than 25 participating artists, effectively transforming the area into a gallery. Plaza Walls is a one-stop shop for some of the coolest street art in our city, and we hope it’s here to stay.

1. Do you have a building style? If so, how would you briefly describe it? Our Building style is a fusion of timeless elegance mixed with transitional touches. 2. We can't wait to see your Street of Dreams custom home! If you could give us one little sneak peek, what would it be? I would give you a peek of the amazing ceiling running through the main area of the home and the raised gardens outside with glass rock fire bowls. 3. What's your favorite thing about being a home builder? Taking a client’s dream and going from dirt to masterpiece. 4. If you can pick one, what is your favorite design trend right now? Mixing elements to create details that wow. 5. What is your best advice to readers when it comes to custom home building/design? The relationship between a buyer and builder doesn't last for just one year, it lasts a lifetime, like their home. Interviewing builders and being aware of the costs, materials and processes is very important, along with an overall feel of how you will work together. 6. What's it like to be a part of Street of Dreams? And what are you most excited for with Street of Dreams? Being part of the Street of Dreams is a very exciting process and we are very excited to showcase a luxury home with well-designed areas to enjoy for years to come.

1. Do you have a building style? If so, how would you briefly describe it? We love mixing old with new. Many people say they love the character and charm of older homes but love the functionality and efficiency of new ones. Rader Building Company merges those concepts together to create a true masterpiece. Jennifer has a background in Design and Art History. Our Street of Dreams home has classic Colonial bones with a fresh modern twist. 2. We can't wait to see your Street of Dreams custom home! If you could give us one little sneak peek, what would it be? There are too many to choose just one, we’ll let you decide! You can grab a bottle of wine from the full-size, temperature-controlled wine room, head up the sweeping staircase to your very own driving range, catch a movie in the fully automated theatre, grab a slice of pizza from the Florentine pizza oven, relax on one of the many covered outdoor living spaces or splash around in the palatial swimming pool! 3. What's your favorite thing about being a home builder? Building a family’s dream home! We take our jobs seriously, because we understand that this isn’t just a house … it’s a home and the backdrop of your family’s lives and memories. This is where our clients will be celebrating all of life’s joys, from their baby’s first steps on our floors to prom pictures on a beautifully designed staircase. It is a gratifying career helping clients plan for the future so their dream home adapts as life changes. 4. If you can pick one, what is your favorite design trend right now? LIGHT AND BRIGHT! Homes are much more airy than they were a few years ago. Jennifer loves that heavy draperies have taken a back seat to roman shades, and fabrics such as velvet and brocades are readily available in in softer palettes. 5. What is your best advice to readers when it comes to custom home building/design? HAVE FUN! Discuss your contract in detail with your builder before signing. The more you know, the more you will enjoy the process. Building a home can be one of the largest financial and time investments you will ever make. And last but not least, make sure you choose a Certified Professional Homebuilder. 6. What's it like to be a part of Street of Dreams? And what are you most excited for with Street of Dreams? It is a true honor and privilege to be a part of Street of Dreams. We are by far the youngest of the builder groups and are excited to step up to the challenge. FUN FACT: We would tour open houses and were frequent visitors of the Parade of Homes as high school sweethearts. Being selected as a Street of Dreams builder feels like a dream come true! Looking forward to a great event while showcasing a home designed back in our high school days!

EATS More Oklahomans are becoming health conscious and conquering their fitness goals. With all these new changes happening, the owners of Organic Squeeze, Mike and Robert, have built a place that supports and encourages people to live and eat better for a healthier lifestyle. Organic Squeeze has been around for a while. They recently opened up their newest location in Midtown and plan on building Express outlets around the Metro. (We seriously can’t wait for this!) Most people know them for their heavenly smoothies and juices, but some have yet to discover their food bar.

What We Tasted

Well, we took it upon ourselves to try everything out for you guys, and believe me when we say IT WAS WORTH IT! The food was healthy but at the same time made us feel like we were having a cheat day – basically the best of both worlds! Their chef, John, is amazing and takes great pride in his recipes, which he creates from scratch. He also changes the Food Bar Menu weekly, drawing inspiration from different regions of the world. Much of the produce is locally sourced and organic. In addition, they have a public grocery section that provides all the ingredients they use in the kitchen, at very reasonable prices. So not only are they health conscious, but they’re environmentally conscious as well!

OATMEAL With fresh fruits, pecans and cinnamon

When creating the smoothie and juice menu, the owners wanted options that reflected the culture of Oklahoma: sweet with great taste, but still healthy. It took them about a year to finalize the recipes. That may sound a bit extreme, but when you try one of their products you’ll think all that time spent was well worth it! Our favorite juice is the Tenacity, and our favorite smoothie is the Muscle Westbrook, which tastes just like chocolate milk and surprisingly has no sugar in it. So trust us when we say that Organic Squeeze has definitely found the right balance of healthy and tasty. This summer one of their initiatives is to encourage kids in the community to drink less soda. All they have to do is make a pledge online committing to stay away from soda for a week and they are rewarded with a free smoothie every Friday! If they can go a whole summer without soda, they get to enter a drawing and have the chance of winning something even more special. (We can’t give all the secrets away, though.) While we were there, we found out that they’ll be launching a range of popsicles soon, both juice and dessert types. You should have seen our faces! The kid in us jumped for glee and we can’t wait to try them out. This review was a little different for us, because we could see the genuine passion they had to make a change in the community and be a source for people to learn about healthier eating habits. We could see that it was more than just a business to them, that their hearts are in this, and that made our own hearts smile. If you’re ever in the area, whether you’re trying to make a lifestyle change or just looking for a great spot to eat, we definitely suggest trying them out.
