L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F
Well, Hello August! You’ve snuck up on us quick. How is summer already coming to an end? Soon the 100-degree days will fade into cooler temperatures, school will be back in session, shorts and flip-flops will become pants and boots, football will return (hallelujah!), and somehow we’ll be working our way to the final months of 2017. But let’s not jump too far ahead of ourselves. Let’s soak up this month for what it’s worth and squeeze every last bit of summer out of it! As one last hoorah to summer, we’re back with our second year of our Adventures and Activities feature, and we’ve brought you a whole new list to guide you through some of the city’s best, everything from bike sharing with Spokies to free art walks to rock climbing. If you’re a local, we totally want you to be a tourist in your own city, and if you’re just passing through, welcome to our great state! There’s no denying our state and city are growing and at a rapid pace, with tons of new businesses, trendy restaurants and retail stores going up left and right. Have you passed by a construction sign lately on your routine drive and thought, “What is that?” Well, we’re clueing you in on some of them in this issue. Check out Coming Soon: OKC to get the 411 on what’s going down (or I guess you could say up!) in the city. We have a feeling you’re going to be very excited about a lot of these. We are!
If you’re a lover of good food and a chic atmosphere like I am, you have to try The Pritchard Wine Bar in the fun and vibrant Plaza District. It’s trendy and overflowing with excellent food. No matter what you order, be sure to get the pickles and the pecans. They’re both life changing, and I honestly think it’s time we start convincing The Pritchard to sell them in bulk amounts to-go . You can’t go wrong with any choice on the menu. Check it out on your next date night or girls’ gettogether! This past month has been a blast putting this issue together for you all. I hope you have as much fun reading it and trying out some new activities and adventures. There are countless things to see, do, try and taste. We hope you get out there and make new memories as often as possible. Our city is truly something special that I hope none of us ever take for granted. Love & Light,
Lauren Wright

OKLAHOMA CITY STREETCAR Our ever-growing city needs more modern and convenient city transportation, and we’ve found the answer with MAPS 3 and EMBARK. The residents of OKC voted in 2009 to self-fund a 4.6mile modern streetcar system and it’s officially underway! If you’ve been in Bricktown lately, you’ve seen firsthand the construction going on to put in the streetcar track. The Oklahoma City Streetcar will include 22 different stops linking major employers, businesses, attractions and residences in Midtown, Automobile Alley, the business district, downtown and Bricktown. There will be six streetcars and each will hold approximately 100 people. They’ll be able to get from one area to another in a matter of minutes. The streetcars are set to begin service at the end of 2018. For more information visit embarkok.com

ANGRY SCOTSMAN BREWING Oklahoma City is seeing a boom in craft beers and breweries, and that’s a great thing! One of the newest to the scene is Angry Scotsman Brewing, and they have found their new home at 704 W. Reno in the booming area just west of downtown Oklahoma City. Angry Scotsman is planning a brewery, taproom and beer garden once the overhaul of the vintage 1930s building is complete. It will have great views of the skyline from the planned 5,000-square-foot patio. We foresee many summer nights on this patio and can’t wait for the building and brewing process to get underway. It looks as if a new Aloft hotel is in the works for northwest OKC, an area that is booming with new businesses and housing. The new Aloft would sit south of Memorial Road between May and Pennsylvania, in the area behind Lowe’s. The only Aloft hotel currently in Oklahoma City is in Deep Deuce near Bricktown and downtown. The new Aloft would feature conference rooms, the WXYZ Bar, a courtyard and a pool. Opening is planned for 2019. For more information visit alofthotelshub.com.

TARGET STORE – MEMORIAL
Target is revamping their stores. They want to offer guests an elevated experience but at the same time make sure they are keeping up with the demand for fast and easy pickup, giving customers every reason to keep shopping at Target. In 2017 they plan to remodel 110 stores, and the store at Memorial and Penn is the one they’ve chosen for Oklahoma City! The general look will be different: you’ll see a more modern and sleek version of Target than ever before. There will still be two entrances, but one will have displays of Target’s exclusive brands and seasonal items while the second one will focus on ease of shopping, with quick order pickup, grab-n-go food and more. The new and improved Target is set to debut in October before the holiday rush. For more information visit corporate.target.com.

THE DOUGLASS First it was Douglass High School, then it was Page Woodson School and now it is an apartment community. This 1910 school building is near the OU Health and Sciences Center, east of downtown. This area is becoming a more popular area to live, particularly for students, those in the medical field and those who just want the convenience of living close to downtown. The old school has been turned into 60 residential apartments and five modern meeting spaces, and the 1930s auditorium has been restored for community use. The apartments are located at 600 N. High Ave. and have a combination art deco/urban industrial feel. You’ll find studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom options. There are three properties: The Douglass, The Douglass Next Door and The Seven at Page Woodson. For more information visit pagewoodsonokc.com.

UNCLE JULIO’S Uncle Julio’s is a popular Mexican eatery with 21 locations in Texas alone, and they will soon make a new home in the booming Chisholm Creek development of Oklahoma City. They’ve chosen a spot just off Memorial Road, on the west side of a proposed lake. This restaurant plans to have a large bar and massive patio overlooking the lake and fountains. Uncle Julio’s serves madefrom-scratch Mexican food. It’s not your average Tex-Mex: they use a combination of fresh, locally grown ingredients. It’s a great place to get together for special occasions, with the family after a ball game or with the girlfriend for happy hour. We can’t wait to welcome Uncle Julio’s to Oklahoma City! For more information visit unclejulios.com.

Hudson Avenue east to S. Robinson Avenue. The south section is bordered on the north by I-40, extending south to S.W. 10th between S. Walker Avenue and Robinson, and S.W. 15th between S. Harvey Avenue and Robinson. The north section is scheduled to be completed in 2019 and the south section will follow in 2021. DOWNTOWN CONVENTION CENTER If you’ve lived in Oklahoma a while, you’ve seen many things change and grow over the years, and also age. Cox Convention Center has been home to many events, conventions, graduations, shows, concerts and more over the last 45 years. As our city continues to thrive, it’s time for a new convention center. The new downtown convention center from the MAPS 3 project is set to break ground this year with the hope that it will attract major conventions, help create local jobs and bring millions of dollars of business and tax revenue to the city. It will have a 200,000-square-foot exhibit hall, a 45,000-square-foot meeting space, and a 30,000-square-foot ballroom with a 4,000-square-foot panoramic balcony. The center will be bounded by S.W. 4th Street, S.W. 7th Street, Robinson Avenue and Shields Boulevard. The designs proposed are for a modern look. It will have a smokehouse on the north end of the property, a bar outbuilding, covered pergolas and an area for food trucks. In addition, there will be fire pits, lawn games and covered/uncovered seating in a large outdoor green area. There is currently no announced opening date.
LAKE HEFNER BOATHOUSE REMODEL OKC Riversport Adventures is thriving at its downtown and Lake Overholser locations, and they have added Lake Hefner on the northwest side of town to the mix. They offer kayak and stand-up paddle boarding rentals. They’re hoping for a remodel of the existing harbormaster’s building at 4407 S. Lake Hefner Drive, which would greatly increase the number of recreation programs at the lake. They would use it for water sports and shore-side fitness activities. The improved facility would feature large doors opening to the lake, an expansive roof terrace and an observation deck with a new bar. The adjacent marina would include boat, kayak and stand-up paddling rentals, bicycle rentals, and food concession and meeting facilities. They are currently seeking partners and fund-raising. We sure hope this plan comes to fruition soon! For more information visit riversportokc.com/lake-hefner.

HeyDay Bricktown also offers monthly events like wine tastings, so be sure to check their calendar online. The food is absolutely delicious, so come hungry and bring the whole family out for an entertaining time!

PUPPY OF THE MONTH Basset Hound
Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro? A Basset Hound’s sure do! These distinct-looking pups with their lowhanging ears are not only cute but are also great hunting dogs. They have incredible hunting instincts and scenting abilities. Because of this, Bassets are easy to train and eager to learn. They’re extremely patient, making them great family dogs, especially for those with young children. They split their time evenly between being lazy and working hard, so whether you’re on a mission or you need a cuddler, the Basset is an all-around great breed. 48

READS Fiction: LILAC GIRLS – MARTHA HALL KELLEY Although this book is classified as fiction, it was inspired by the life of a real WWII heroine. This is a novel of love, redemption and secrets that were hidden for decades. It tells the stories of three women spanning from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland as they strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.
INTO THE WATER – PAULA HAWKINS More psychological suspense from the bestselling writer of The Girl on the Train. A single mother and a teenage girl turn up dead at the bottom of a river in the middle of town. Their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged.
WONDER – R.J. PALACIO Get ready for this one to pull at your heartstrings. Auggie Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school until now, in fifth grade. This warm, uplifting story will have you laughing and crying within minutes. Soon to be a major motion picture starring Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.
Non-Fiction: THE GLASS CASTLE – JEANNETTE WALLS This remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption is being made into a movie starring award-winning actress Brie Larson. It’s a true story about a dysfunctional but uniquely vibrant family. So, as always, we recommend reading the book before you see the movie!
4 tsp sugar Handful of mint leaves 6 oz raspberries 6 oz blackberries 4 oz cherries, pitted and cut in half 3/4 cup Smirnoff Red, White & Berry vodka 1 cup limeade Crushed ice
BIG MAGIC – ELIZABETH GILBERT Inspirational writer Elizabeth Gilbert digs deep into her own generative process to share her wisdom and unique perspective about creativity. She offers potent insights into the mysterious nature of inspiration. After reading this book, you’ll want to embrace your own curiosity and let go of needless suffering so you can live your most creative life.
Club soda
DIRECTIONS: 1.
Rim four glasses with sugar if desired. In the bottom of each, muddle 1 teaspoon of sugar, a few torn mint leaves, 2 raspberries, 2 blackberries and 2 cherries until liquefied.
2.
Pour 1 1/2 oz Smirnoff into each glass. Top with 1/4 cup limeade, crushed ice and a splash of club soda. Enjoy!
WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR – PAUL KALANITHI At age 36 Paul Kalanithi, a neurosurgeon, was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor making a living treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. This memoir is a profoundly moving story on life and death.

EATS You don’t have to take a plane across the Atlantic to find a trendy French establishment – you can just walk into The Pritchard, a chic wine bar situated in the booming and vibrant Plaza District. The first thing you’ll probably notice is the stunning décor. (Come decorate our house, please and thank you.) The Pritchard Wine Bar is upscale yet casual in all the right ways. It’s not just a wine bar but a delicious restaurant as well, and their food is top-notch. Get a few friends or family together and you’ll probably be posted up here for a while. The largest part of their everyday menu is a selection of bar snacks, cheese plates and small plates to munch on and share while you try wines from all over the world. The menu is eclectic and has a little bit of everything. Executive Chef Shelby Sieg keeps it seasonal, so you can expect to see two to three different dishes on the menu every four to five weeks or so. But don’t fret, the whole menu won’t change, and the most popular dishes probably won’t either, like their beloved Brussels with Spanish chorizo. One of the many things we love about this spot is that they use local ingredients whenever possible: local meats from Native Meat Company, honey from Honey Hill Farm, local pecans and more. You know you’re getting the freshest ingredients of the highest quality in every single dish. We guarantee that meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans will all love this place equally. The Pritchard is very accommodating to dietary needs: their regular menu is already almost 80% gluten free, and they are able to tweak many of the dishes to cater to those with specific food needs. If you’re like most of us, there’s a good chance you’re into brunch, and you’re going to fall in love with The Pritchard’s. This unique menu is served every Saturday and Sunday and you’re not going to find one like it anywhere else. Chef Shelby truly knows what she’s doing. The Pritchard Wine Bar is a special place and the experience was unforgettable in both taste and feel. If you find yourself here, you’re never going to want to leave – trust us. 50

Locally owned Mama Rita’s is the newest Mexican kitchen in town producing delicious border-style Mexican food. We love the complimentary cheese sauce, salsa and endless handmade flour tortillas. Try not to stuff yourself before the meal actually comes! We recommend the marinated fajitas: high-quality meats so full of flavor, in warm tortillas and topped with all the fixings. Our stomachs are growling right now! We also recommend the authentic Mexican street tacos, the street corn and the homemade ceviche – it’s to die for. Try one of their unique margaritas or drinks after work with friends. We love this places all around freshness and tastiness! They have great happy hour specials, and it’s not limited to just one hour, thank goodness! Get out there and give Mama Rita’s a warm welcome into the OKC food scene.
This trendy spot is serving delicious coffee and tea drinks like macchiatos and matcha lattes. Their food is worth a try, too! They’re whipping up trendy and yummy brioche toasts, topped with cream cheese and fruit spread, peanut butter, banana and honey, and more. It’s a great place to stop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seeing as they’re open every weekday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and they stay open even later on Friday and Saturday. They also have an extensive sandwich menu that you’re going to want to work your way through, with some fun creations like the Hamlet: thick bacon, apricot spread, sharp white cheddar and a balsamic glaze on wheat berry bread. Their prices are extremely reasonable. Stop by, sit back, relax and stay a while – you’re going to want to!

MOB GRILL
Coming from a long line of family in the food business, it was almost inevitable that Marco Morrow would dive into the food world himself. When he did, it was with a food truck: MOB Grill! His beloved burgers had been a favorite of friends and family for over ten years before MOB Grill was formed. MOB, standing for Marco’s Onion Burgers, has been serving up burgers for three years now and have cooked over 76,200 of them! We have a feeling that number will continue to rise once you’ve tried one for yourself. There’s something about the combination of marinated, caramelized onions on a juicy cheeseburger that makes you feel comforted. So simple, yet so delicious. Add a side of their crispy twice-fried French fries and you’re guaranteed a great day. MOB’s burgers have won them several awards: #1 Hamburgers, #1 Food Truck and a Top 5 Food Truck Finalist. Once you give it a try, you’ll see why. It’s co-owned and run with Seth Barker, who has a passion both for these burgers and for people. You’ll often see him on the truck serving up burgers with a smile – say hello! In addition to being out and about throughout the city, MOB Grill can be hired for tailgates, parties, weddings, charity events and so much more. Have a private event coming up? Your guests will love everything MOB. The menu is simple: burgers, more burgers, and fries. You really can’t go wrong with any choice, but of course the original MOB Burger is a great place to start. If you’re feeling adventurous you have to try the Butcher, a MOB Burger topped with 12-hour pecan- and mesquite-smoked pulled pork. You’ll never question “Where’s the meat?” with this truck. Oh, and we should probably mention they’ve converted seven vegans so far – yep, their creations are THAT good. Next time you see the MOB crew out and about, be sure to stop and have a burger. We’ll just go ahead right now and say, told ya so!
