Happy August! Well, summer is absolutely flying by, I think, so I’m trying to soak the rest of it up for all it’s worth. I can’t believe we’re saying “Happy August” already. I could do without the intense heat, but I know come January I’ll be wishing for it back. What have been your favorite parts of the summer? Mine have been time at the pool, patio dinners with family and friends, the unbelievable summer sunsets, and golf. I’m all about being outside, so before summer is over make sure you check out all of the great events happening around the state for one last hoorah, like the balloon festival or the Wheeler Summer Music Series at the Wheeler Ferris Wheel! CHICKEN N PICKLE Chicken N Pickle, a Kansas City–based chain, is planning to bring its recreation and entertainment business to north Oklahoma City. Chicken N Pickle will be located near the new Flix Brewhouse and other restaurants and offices on the property that was once home to OPUBCO. Currently, Chicken N Pickle only has 3 other locations, making OKC its fourth. The heart of Chicken N Pickle is pickleball, which is similar to tennis but on a smaller court with hard paddles. It’s one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and is a big hit amongst all ages. The chicken in the name comes from their large restaurant and bar area that features rotisserie chicken, pork and beef with hand-cut fries paired with craft beer from local breweries. It’s a place for good food and fun games and we’re so in.

TOWNEPLACE SUITES BY MARRIOTT AUTOMOBILE ALLEY
Automobile Alley continues to expand at a fast rate and has become one of the top destinations for locals and visitors in the downtown area. TownePlace Suites by Marriott sees that growth and wants to become a part of it by building a 7-story, 111-room hotel. It would combine 3 levels of parking and 4 levels of hotel that would include a bar connected to an outdoor patio, meeting rooms, a fitness center and guest rooms. TownePlace is positioned as an extendedstay hotel with kitchenettes and larger-than-average rooms.

ARRIVE HOTELS MIDTOWN
Trendy and chic Arrive Hotels & Restaurants, based out of Los Angeles, is bringing their 6th location to Midtown. They’re proposing a 6-story, 110-room hotel on 11th Street that will also include restaurant and retail space. The hotel is expected to share decoration elements from the original Palm Springs location with decor from West Elm and CB2 and features like Apple TV and Malin+Goetz bath products. Construction should begin early next year. 36

Good Egg Dining, the creators of your beloved Cheever’s, Iron Star, Red Prime, Republic and so many more, are creating a new concept for the first time in more than two years. They’re taking over the former space of Empire Slice House in the Plaza District and bringing in a laid-back taco shop. They’re going to have a small menu of mostly tacos with a few appetizers and salads, margaritas, swirls, and some fun cocktails. It’s rooted in Tex-Mex, but you can’t push any of the menu items into a specific Mexican category. They’ve completed gutting and reworking the previous space into a dining room with a large bar area and a patio that will be semi-enclosed. Great tacos, margs and a clutch playlist – we’re sold.
PENN CENTRAL
After years of planning, Penn Central, a massive mixed-use project near Penn Square Mall, is moving forward. The 12-acre space near one of OKC’s busiest areas has been rezoned and we’ll be welcoming this massive project with open arms. While all of the fine-print details are still in the works and more voting has to take place, the preliminary plans are for a movie theater, apartments, offices, retail, restaurants, a hotel and 3 parking garages.

CHISHOLM CREEK PHASE 2 Chisholm Creek in northwest OKC has become a favorite destination for all of Oklahoma City and it’s continuing to grow. They’re moving into Phase 2 of building, which is located in the middle of the development. They’re going to be putting in 5-story buildings that will feature office space, more apartments, retail at the ground level and 2 parking garages. To the south of the lake, a boutique hotel will be going up that plans to have an outdoor pool and rooftop deck. In addition, Alamo Drafthouse, the popular bar and movie theater from Texas, is planning to make a new home in OKC. Building for Phase 2 is planned to start before the end of the year.

VASA FITNESS The currently vacant Buy for Less building at Penn and N.W. 23rd will be getting a facelift thanks to VASA Fitness of Orem, Utah. They’ll be spending $5 million to transform the almost 60,000-square-foot space into a state-of-the-art workout facility. You’ll find amenities like an indoor pool, group exercise classes like spin and aerobics, a basketball court, free weights, racquetball courts, steam, sauna and tanning, plus childcare.
HOTT WINGS Hott Wings is one of the newest establishments to find a home in the new Edmond food hall and multi-use development, The Railyard. Hott Wings is the sister restaurant of Eddie's Bar & Grill, a locally owned spot that is known for their award-winning wings. Set to open late August, Hott Wings will feature all of your favorite wings, plus some. It'll be a great spot to hang out with your favorite people eating to-die-for wings.

THUNDER ALLEY Thunder Alley is BACK and in a whole new way! Thunder Alley will find a new home on the south side of the Arena and act as a gathering space and entertainment venue before and after Thunder games and other arena events. The space would have a covered basketball court, spaces for food trucks and so much more.
NEIGHBORHOOD JAM MIDTOWN The beloved breakfast and brunch eatery Neighborhood Jam is bringing its jam to Midtown in the location of the former Boulevard Cafeteria. A new 2-story, over 32,000-square-foot retail and office building will have Neighborhood Jam as the anchor tenant. There will be plenty of room for additional retail, restaurants and offices in this space.

FLOWER CHILD
Phoenix-based health-food chain Flower Child is bringing its first location to Oklahoma near Classen Curve and Nichols Hills Plaza. They have numerous vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, fresh and light dishes in a fast-casual restaurant concept. You’ll find options like bowls, wraps, salads, soups, fresh-pressed juices, and their delicious avocado toast.

Shyon Keoppel and James Vu are partnering up again. They’re taking over the corner of 10th and Hudson directly next door to Dust Bowl Lanes for a whole new concept called Fan Club. Fan Club will be a large bar with a patio, with both indoor and outdoor seating, a sports theater, karaoke rooms, an arcade and a large dining area.
UP-DOWN The fun just doesn’t stop here in OKC. Up-Down, a regional arcade and bar, wants a new home in OKC. They’re taking over a 2-story building under construction in the Plaza District that will have over 50 retro arcade games, plus classics like Skee-Ball, pinball, Nintendo and life-size Connect Four and Jenga. Up-Down charges a quarter for each game played and offers pizza by the slice and dozens of craft beer and cocktail choices.

Main Event is going to have a new rival, as Japan-based Round1 is planning on bringing its fun hour to Quail Springs Mall. Its 50,000 square feet will be packed full of bowling, arcade games, billiards, karaoke, ping-pong, darts, and a restaurant and bar that will have direct access to Quail Springs Mall and the parking lot. There are more than 110 locations in Japan, which has access to some of the newest technology when it comes to games, some that are found exclusively at Round1.

MADE-ONDEMAND
Amazon is nearing completion on its ginormous fulfillment center near Will Rogers World Airport, and they don’t want to stop there. Amazon wants to bring one of its new made-on-demand centers to OKC, which produces items for March by Amazon, a service where content creators upload their own artwork, have items printed (typically clothing), and have them marketed on the Amazon website. A similar plant was just opened in Philadelphia and it has 48 industrial printers with 16 dryers, as well as pollution control equipment, and can work around the clock.

An independent boutique hotel, the Shay Hotel, is making its home in Midtown with hopes of being a destination for both locals and visitors. The hotel will feature 25 rooms, a restaurant, bar and coffee shop on the ground floor, and an adjacent suite that can be rented as a room or used as a private dining space. The main attraction is the stunning pool, which will have its own bar as well as the option to cover it for private events. The goal is to have the hotel and pool up and running by summer 2020.

Their cocktail menu was created by the oh-so-talented Julia McLish of Barkeep in Midtown. Every single cocktail is built around The Smoking Boar’s flavors, so they pair perfectly with whatever you order. Like Grandma’s Solo Cup, which is peach-tea-infused Old Forester with lemon and simple syrup, or one of their smoked cocktails – yes, smoked. We have a feeling that no matter whether you’re a die-hard meat eater, a vegetarian, gluten-free or even vegan, you can find something you absolutely love at this BBQ joint. Almost half (48%) of traumatic brain injury (TBI) emergencies are because of falling.
TBI hospitalizations rates are highest among those aged 75 years and older.
An estimated 2.8 million people sustain a TBI annually.
Every year 80,000 to 90,000 people experience the onset of long-term or lifelong disabilities associated with TBIs.
Our brain is our body’s computer, it’s what makes us go – and many people and families have been affected by traumatic brain injuries. Brainxcite is here to help. Brainxcite provides free services to those who lives have been affected by TBIs within the state of Oklahoma. They work with local hospitals to provide Brain Injury Care Bags and education to families who have loved ones admitted to ICUs, trauma units or rehabilitation centers with any form of brain injury. The care bags include games, pencils, pens, writing tablets, matching games, cards, flash cards, pick-up sticks, picture books, softballs or toys, and coloring books and crayons. They’re also making sure out-of-town caregivers don’t go hungry and helping them get around by providing gas and meal cards. Brainxcite was created after a family was affected by a TBI. Through their own experience they realized it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and that the journey is more manageable with a helping community around you. Brainxcite is an extension of innovative TBI therapy. They’re providing the necessary tools that will build upon the therapy’s team resources to achieve optimum brain functionality. They serve as a partner for the survivor and their caregiver throughout the recovery journey. They have also partnered with several professionals in the industry, like a speech language pathologist and a specialized trainer to brain injury survivors, to really help meet the needs of those who have been injured. They’re pulling out all the stops to help these people reach their full potential and more.
