Hello loves! February is here. Yep, that was January that went by in the blink of an eye. Did you start the year off well? I feel like I did. The first month of the year is always one of my favorites. It’s a time to reset, make new goals, crush them, and set the tone for the rest of 2018. It’s going to be a great year; I’m going to choose for it to be, regardless of what life has in store! Isn’t that an exciting feeling? February arrived in a hurry, but I’m not too mad about it. This is one of my favorite issues of the year!
month at Yokozuna in Chisholm Creek. I’m pretty sure the cauliflower tossed in spicy gochujang sauce changed my life forever; it’s that good. I’m a sushi person, so it’s no surprise I fell in love with their creative rolls. You have to try them at least once. It’s the perfect spot for a date night, a get-together with your girls or even Valentine’s Day! Speaking of which, it’s the month of love, and I just love love. (I’ll be honest though, if we could substitute Valentine’s Day for a second Thanksgiving, I would not be mad about it.) This month, let’s make it a goal to scatter love. Show a stranger a smile, share a meal with someone lonely, call an old friend, and invest in yourself (self-love is just as important). It doesn’t have to be all about chocolate boxes and cards. Show love from all angles. Happiness matters, joy is important and love is valuable. Have a wonderful month!
I’ve always loved home décor. My love for home décor seems to grow as I grow older, but I think I just might be OK with that. There’s something magical in creating a space that makes you feel comfortable and at home, gives off a vibe of your personality and has meaning to you. Not to mention the visual appeal. In a sense, it’s a form of art, and you get to look at it every day. We’ve found some of our favorite pieces in local stores around the city. There’s something for every room, every budget and every style. Whether you’re taking on a new room project or just looking for the perfect piece, I encourage Love & Light, you to shop local when and where you can. There are so many amazing home stores right here in our backyard. Happy shopping! If you know me, you know I love good food. So I can’t leave out a mention of our amazing food review this

A Guide to
Indoor plants are the trendiest of the trendy right now for all different styles and aesthetics. They not only add actual life to a space, but they come with many benefits, like cleaning the air of unwanted or harmful toxins. They generate extra oxygen and some can even make you sleep more soundly. On that alone, we’re sold! If you don’t think you have a green thumb, don’t freak – a majority of these plants are extremely low maintenance and self-sufficient. If you’ve ever wanted to give indoor gardening a go, here are some great plants to start with.
INDOOR
Plants
ALOE 3
3
Aloe clears the air of benzene and formaldehyde and heals cuts and burns. This is a great one to keep handy in your kitchen.
BIRD-OF-PARADISE 5
5
The bird-of-paradise takes a little more work than your average indoor plant, but the stunning flowers it produces may just be worth it.
10

SPLIT-LEAF PHILODENDRON 4
3
Bring the tropics into your home with a split-leaf. This plant has a minimalist aesthetic and is super self-sufficient.
FAN PALM 3
2
Palm plants can live many years if properly cared for. They are very tolerant and quickly adapt to indoor growth.
so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2018
11
MONEY TREE 3
4
The money tree, also known as the “good luck tree,” is a popular plant in feng shui. It’s believed to invite good fortune and positive energy into the home.
CACTUS 4
2
A cactus is about as low maintenance as it gets. It makes a great starter plant for beginner gardeners.
CALATHEA PLANT 3
2
This beautiful plant features colored and patterned foliage. Native to Brazil, it thrives in warm and humid climates, so it might not be the best for someone who lives up north.
12
so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2018
Too much Water? SOME INDOOR PLANTS NEED PERIODS OF DRY SOIL, WHILE OTHERS NEED TO BE KEPT CONSTANTLY MOIST.
CHINESE EVERGREEN 2
1
This plant is also wonderfully easy to grow. It tolerates just about every indoor condition and is great for cleaning the air.
SILVER DOLLAR VINE 4
3
These do great hanging or sitting in a pot. Fun fact: this one is a member of the cucumber family.

13
RUBBER FIG 3
4
The rubber fig can be toxic if ingested by cats or dogs, so be sure your nosy animal doesn’t take a bite.
FIDDLE-LEAF FIG 4
4
To keep this plant healthy, wipe dust off the large leaf surfaces with a soft cloth.
JADE 4
4
Jade is another air-filtering plant. To make new jade plants, just cut off a branch and put it in water, and a new root should develop.
14
so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2018
SUCCULENT 2
1
In addition to being trendy, succulents are about as easy at it gets when it comes to planting. They are extremely low maintenance.
pro tip! ROTATE YOUR PLANT EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS TO PROVIDE EVEN SUNLIGHT.
SNAKE 2
2
Great for filtering out harmful trichloroethylene, xylene, toluene, and benzene. And it gives off oxygen at night, so it might help you sleep

CREATING WITH CONCRETE
with Byrd + Associates
Design trends are constantly shifting, rotating, as new concepts emerge and old ones come into a new light. Concrete is one growing trend that we can definitely get behind. It’s evolved into a complex multifaceted building material for both interior and exterior. The malleability and strength of reinforced concrete opens many doors for creating unique design elements throughout a space. Local architectural designer and builder Byrd + Associates walks us through the concept of concrete, one of their signature design trends.
Derek Byrd 44
so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2018
MANY FACES Concrete allows for so many creative options. Until now, concrete has been a staple for roads, sidewalks, driveways and occasionally the outsides of homes. Byrd + Associates is here to make concrete the norm for inside design as well as outside. It can be the face of a fireplace, the wall in a dining room or the countertop in a kitchen.
STANDS THE TEST OF TIME It’s common these days for homes to be slapped together in a few months and then deteriorate or become extremely outdated in 20 years or even less. Concrete lasts 100% longer than alternatives such as typical studs and drywall. While there is a difference in cost, the life span of concrete doesn’t compare to anything else. There may be more expense, but it comes with more benefits.
INSTALLATION Contrary to popular belief, concrete design is typically faster than stud, brick or even stone wall installation. Before you pour concrete, the plugs and electrical are already complete and there’s no finishing like paint or grout. From start to finish it takes roughly a week to complete a concrete project.
DID YOU KNOW? The older concrete gets, the harder it becomes. It takes roughly 64 years for concrete to fully cure.
We love this style. It makes a statement on its own and evolves throughout the years. It’s the perfect backdrop for a beautiful piece of artwork, or you can leave it bare to show the contrast of the bumps, cracks and divots. If you’re looking for a new concept to set your house apart from every other on the block, concrete should be your next project. It’s modern, raw, bold and perfectly imperfect.

PUPPY OF THE MONTH Meet Izzy! OWNER: TRACEE STRONG
This sassy yet snuggly pug is almost six months old. She’s already mastered the art of selective listening: she only listens when a treat is involved. She loves to play tag, but you are always “it” and she doesn’t mind playing FOREVER. She’s ornery, but when she cuddles all of the mischievousness melts away. When not playing or cuddling, she loves to chew on “SmartBones,” which help keep her distracted from chewing on just about everything else in sight, including furniture. Izzy is a bit of a fashionista already: she knows how to strut her stuff and wear her clothes well. She loves her two pug sisters, Dazy and Ivy. NOW DELIVERING NEW EXPANSION OPENING SOON WITH PATIO AND FULL BAR
EATS Flavorful, creative, unique, tasty, chic – just a few of the words that come to mind when thinking about Yokozuna. Yokozuna first got started in Tulsa, created from the McNellie’s Group, and it has finally made its way to OKC (we’re so glad!) in the booming Chisholm Creek development. They’re whipping up delicious and creative sushi rolls you won’t find anywhere else in the city, great noodle bowls, handcrafted cocktails and so much more. If you’re not a sushi lover, before you shy away, we’re telling you – Yokozuna has something on their menu for everyone, promise. They’re extremely diet and allergy friendly, plus they’re trained to modify different menu items for gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and even vegan needs without compromising on flavor. Everything we tasted was unbelievably good. I’m pretty sure my new go-to for lunch, dinner and everything in between is the tempura fried cauliflower; gochujang sauce is where it’s at. Do yourself a favor and order it before your meal or even as your meal, it’s that good. We appreciate great sushi and love rolls that are a little on the adventurous side. It’s not every day you run across sushi rolls topped with strawberries, but trust us – it works. Just about every roll on the menu has a creative flair to it. At first glance, some of the combinations of flavors seem unlikely, but Yokozuna’s sushi wizards make it all work and do it well. The sushi can’t take all the praise, though, because none of their other menu items, like their ramen, their curry and even the fried rice, can be ignored. They take great pride in producing one-of-a-kind and tasty food. And drinks, too: they’re fresh-squeezing all of their juices, so the quality is guaranteed. That attention to detail doesn’t stop at their cocktails. For everything from a 2-person lunch to a birthday party of 14, Yokozuna is sure to wow you and your favorite people. The chic atmosphere, the food and the friendly and accommodating staff make it a place for everyone and every occasion.

Since 1977, Ingrid’s has been serving up some of Oklahoma’s favorite German and European cuisine. The original location on N.W. 36th has been featured on the infamous “Diners, DriveIns and Dives” on the Food Network. In addition, the restaurant has won numerous awards in its many years in business. You’ll find authentic recipes, old-world charm and an unbelievable bakery. They’re making their own breads, pastries, desserts, cakes and so much more. You can’t go wrong with the classic wiener schnitzel with German potato salad, spaetzle, and purple cabbage. Ingrid’s has opened up a second location at N.W. 63rd and May Avenue to continue serving even more of you hungry customers! It’s a classic that we hope will be around for many more years to come.
BBQ joint is loved by locals and visitors alike. It’s a fairly small space, but it’s not lacking anything in flavor. You’ll find smoked brisket, pulled pork, chicken, beef sausage, ribs and beef ribs. They also make their own sauces in house, as well as sausages, like cheddar and jalapeño! If you’re feeling extra hungry, The D.H. Sandwich is piled high with brisket, pork and sausage and garnished with a rib. Yes, you read that right – garnished with a rib. If you’re an Okie then you have to go with the fried okra or coleslaw! It’s a great spot for lunch or dinner or to take home for your next party.
SO6IX SUPPORTS GIVING FOR GOOD
CENTRAL OKLAHOMA HUMANE SOCIETY Welcome to our new monthly section, in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

The Central Oklahoma Humane Society was founded in 2007. They work in close partnership with the OKC Animal Shelter and other local shelters. Their primary focus is on eliminating needless euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals in OKC. They’re getting animals healthy and cleaned up, educating adopters, offering clinic services, and providing a whole lot of love to these precious animals, who have a whole lot of love to give right back.
