Hello! The New Year is here and I am so excited for it. A new year always comes with so much hope and ambition. We all get a fresh start on living the way we want and being the people we aspire to be. I’ve got my list of things I will be focusing on this year for better health, relationships and finances. I hope you’ve made commitments to make this year great and improve certain areas of your life as well. It’s never easy to make changes to your lifestyle, but it is always worth it not only for you, but for others in your life. I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors this year. No doubt many of you will make eating healthy one of your New Year’s resolutions, as so many of us do. We compiled a great list of local restaurants throughout the metro that are offering healthy choices. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and fit friendly – you’ll find a little bit of something for everyone.
me. We watched all month as so many people and businesses worked so hard to get votes. You’re all winners in our eyes! Social media platforms were covered in Okie Honor messages and graphics by what seemed like everyone in OKC, and the overall participation in the voting was tremendous. Just in the two weeks of final Top 5 voting, over 50,000 people voted for who is #1. We are proud to show off all the winners from each category in this issue. We had multiple categories that received votes in the thousands, but where first and second place were separated by only a few votes, so we’ve also included all the runner-ups for each category. It just goes to show: each vote matters. Please congratulate the winners when you visit their businesses, and look for their custom artist-made #1 plaque!
Congratulations are in order for all of our awesome Okie Honor Winners! The continued growth, Happy New Year! recognition, participation and success of the Okie Honor Awards each year keeps shocking
Oklahoma Has Spoken and Voted
You all voted – 50,000+ votes in a 15-day period to be exact – for who you think is #1, on everything from restaurants and yoga studios to food trucks and realtors. You all have told us who you think is the absolute best, and now we are excited to share the winners of the 2018 Okie Honor Awards!

CrossFit has one of the largest followings of any fitness style, and it was only founded 19 years ago, in 2000. There are CrossFit gyms in 142 countries across 7 continents. It quickly became one of Oklahoma’s most desired workouts, with CrossFit gyms exploding across the metro. CrossFit is a mixture of varied functional movements performed at a high intensity. The movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. The program is designed for universal scalability – so if you’re a newbie you’ll still be doing the same workout as everyone else, just maybe less weight or fewer reps, and you’ll never be left behind.
IT'S A WORKOUT FOR ALL AGES.

Pilates is a system of exercises using a special piece of equipment that is designed to improve your physical strength, flexibility and posture and enhance mental awareness. It draws in little aspects from many different types of workouts, like yoga, strength training and meditation. Pilates typically lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. It’s demanding but it’s not always going to make you break a sweat (it depends), since it’s not your typical cardio. It’s all about concentration and breathing, but you’ll definitely feel it in your muscles during each exercise. PILATES ON WESTERN 3712 N. Western Ave., OKC pilatesonwestern.com

Bootcamp-style training is popular. It gets results, fast! Bootcamps are in a group setting and are offered multiple times a day in a fixed schedule. The circuit training and high intensity combined make for a powerful workout. It’s hard work, but you’ll see a difference in your fitness and stamina. Most bootcamps interval based on time or reps and combine both cardio and multijoint strength exercises.

Orange Theory is intense in the best way possible. It’s a science-backed, technology-tracked, coach-inspired group workout designed to produce results from the inside out. Each Orange Theory workout is only an hour long, so you know you’ll be able to make time for it in your daily schedule. You’ll be maximizing your heart rate during the hour between cardio and weight/body work. Each day the workout is different and you’ll move between a rowing machine, a treadmill, and different weight area exercises, like squats, abdominal work, back exercises, and even arm exercises, just to name a few. You wear an Orange Theory heart rate tracker that will provide you data at the end of your workout. With Orange Theory you’ll get your metabolism revving and

Yoga has evolved and grown across many different yoga studios. Each yoga studio has a different method and style of teaching and even different classes you can take. Strictly meditation, hot yoga where you’ll sweat (a lot), strength training yoga – there’s a style for everyone. While yoga is typically a slow form of exercise compared to others, there is a great benefit for the entire body, mind and soul.

GYMS ARE NOTHING NEW, yet many people still prefer this method of workout compared to the newer styles. Gyms are readily available and most of them are open 24 hours. With options like group classes, swimming pools, cardio, weight training and more, there is something for everyone and every age. If you’re new to a gym, sign up for a few classes with one of their trainers so you can learn the gym, learn how to use the equipment, and even learn a few workout regimens before taking over your own training.

PuppyMONTH OF THE
MEET SEBASTIAN!
Owners: Cody Schroeder & Sharon Phelan Say hello to Mr. Sebastian, the four-month-old Morkie! This cutie is a mix between a Maltese and a Yorkshire Terrier. He is a happygo-lucky guy who is ready to play, play, and play some more. But when it’s time to nap, he can nap hard. He’ll snuggle up and sleep wherever. He will probably be your best friend if you feed him some turkey – Thanksgiving turkey is his favorite! Thanks to his loving relatives, Sebastian got his fair share over the holidays. His family loves how happy he always is to see them when they walk in the door. He loves everyone he sees, so if you see him out and about, he’ll probably want to give you some lovin’! Want your puppy to be entered for our local puppy of the month? Email: LAUREN@SO6IX.COM 50

EATS You know that feeling you get when you find someplace special that’s unlike all the rest? That you want to share with everyone? That you just can’t get enough of? That’s Panang Thai. Husband and wife duo Mac and Pin started Panang in 2007 and it’s grown exponentially since then. They’ve expanded to four locations across the metro in north and south Oklahoma City, Moore and Edmond. Let me just say this before we start: if you want to stop reading because Thai food isn’t normally your thing – don’t. Panang will convert any hesitant eater into a fanatic. We dined at the north Oklahoma City location, and the wait staff who took care of us couldn’t have been nicer or more friendly. The atmosphere is modern, warm and inviting. Mac has always had a love for food, and his wife, Pin, has always loved cooking. This combination mixed with a whole lot of hard work, dedication and love has created some out-of-this-world Thai dishes. The menu has so many great options: curries and stir fries, seafood, soups and salads, fried rice, noodles and so much more. The dishes are a mixture of family recipes that have been passed down from Thailand and other places in Asia, and some are chef driven and created. Panang makes every sauce in-house and you can taste the love in every bite. Each dish we tasted was so full of flavor and unlike any other Thai food we’ve had in the past. Whatever you do, order the Four Seasons Salmon. You’ll want to drink the sauce (not joking; it’s that good). It’s one of the best dishes we’ve ever tasted, not just at a Thai restaurant but anywhere in the city. The combination of the crispy salmon with their house sweet-and-sour curry sauce is unbelievably delicious. You can’t go wrong with any option on the menu though, to be honest. They have plenty of meat dishes, but they are also extremely vegetarian friendly. Almost every dish is offered with the option of vegetables or tofu. Have a food allergy? They also take great care of those who are gluten free or dairy free. Extra bonus: not a single dish or food item contains MSG. It’s really, really hard to pick a favorite thing about Panang, but at the top of our list is their incredible lunch special offered Monday through Friday. It’s only $8.75 and you get to select the dishes you’d like from four different sections. The offerings change daily and it’s literally a platter of food that you probably won’t even be able to put a dent in, for under $10. Do yourself a favor and stop by any of their locations for lunch real soon. If you can’t tell, we should probably just go ahead and say it – we love Panang. It’s a quality place, it’s run by the sweetest family, and it’s really, really, really delicious. N. OKC 752-8400 • S. OKC 691-9989 • Moore 759-7676 • Edmond 285-5188 52

M AGAS IN TABLE 3 N.E. 8TH ST., OKC, OK 73104 405.212.2751 | 8THSTREETMARKETOKC.COM The trendy 8th Street Market has a new tenant: Magasin Table! This Vietnamese casual counter is the sister restaurant to the acclaimed Magasin Kitchen in New Orleans. You’ll find traditional food items like pho, buns, banh mi sandwiches, rice bowls and spring rolls with their own little modern Oklahoma twist. Each dish is full of bold flavors, and they’ve got a perfect combination of both sides of the sweet/ spicy spectrum. They are constantly rotating and reinventing their menu, so it’s a place you’re going to want to stop in often to see what’s new and what you must try. We definitely recommend the pork stir-fried noodles. The pork is honey glazed – it’s delicious.
O STER IA 6430 AVONDALE DR., NICHOLS HILLS, OK 73116 405.254.5058 | OSTERIAOKC.COM Osteria is the newest eatery to make a home in Nichols Hills. This new concept comes from award-winning chef Fabio Viviani and local well-known chef Jonathon Stranger. They’re offering a bold and fresh perspective on classic Italian food with a communal neighborhood appeal. The menu is seasonal, so you know you’re getting the best of the best in each season. This is a menu you’re going to want to work your way through. You’re definitely not going to want to miss the truffle potato skins or the Wagyu meatballs, and the fresh salads are all full of flavor. All of their pasta is made in-house, so of course you can’t go wrong there. Each menu item is so unique and well thought out that you can taste the love and authenticity in every dish. Osteria is open every day from 5 p.m. to midnight, but it’s a hot spot so we recommend making reservations.
THE K R OW ’S NE ST BBQ 715 N.W. 16TH ST., OKC, OK 73106 405.430.0116 | THEKROWSNESTBCC.COM The Krow’s Nest is now a part of the long-standing Saint’s in the Plaza District. It’s the fruition of a dream shared by four lifelong friends. They’re producing delicious BBQ for dine-in or catering. They’ve worked countless hours perfecting their flavors, spices, rubs and sauces. They offer the classics, like pulled pork, sliced or chopped brisket, sausage and ribs, but they’re also cooking up delicious piled-high sandwiches that are a must-try, Like the Triple Chrome Dipp – smoked sausage topped with pulled pork, chipotle mustard and a smoked Angus patty. The sides are the star of their own show, with options like seven-cheese mac and cheese and sweet and spicy coleslaw. We can promise you won’t leave this spot feeling hungry. Bring your stretchy pants.
INDU STRY GAST RO LOUNGE 2800 N.W. 140TH ST., OKC, OK 73134 405.470.1261 Though Industry Gastro Lounge is new to town, it’s already building a following of sports fans and beer lovers alike. This modern sports lounge has more TVs than you can count and a great scratch kitchen to keep bellies full. Most people come for the beer selection and numerous sporting events televised daily, but their food menu shouldn’t be overlooked. They have plenty of great options, like pizza, smoked and grilled items, burgers, sandwiches and delicious sides. They offer a wide selection of local brews to watch the Thunder game with, and the lounge’s size makes it a great place for large groups and gatherings.

GIVING FOR GOOD
WOUNDED VETERANS OF OKLAHOMA Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.
40% Wounded Veterans of Oklahoma assists veterans from all foreign wars, fire departments, police departments and sheriff’s departments.
There are 375,000 registered veterans in the state of OK, with an estimated 425,000 more who are not registered.
The organization does more than 60 hunting, fishing, camping and hiking trips EVERY SINGLE YEAR.
40% OF VETERANS in the state are age 65 and older.
There are more than 400 HOMELESS VETERANS in Oklahoma at any given time.
Wounded Veterans of Oklahoma is stepping up in a big way and focusing on helping veterans within the state of Oklahoma with their everyday struggles and needs. It was founded by James Martin, a veteran himself. He spent 15 years serving in the United States Army and is a disabled veteran. Wounded Veterans of Oklahoma is a 100% volunteer organization. They do a little bit of everything, including taking veterans out on outdoor excursions where they’re able to get out and about, as well as providing opportunities to talk with others and share and bond over their experiences. They want to reach out to as many veterans as possible to help them make ends meet and adapt to civilian life. They help families who might be struggling monetarily with providing a Christmas for their children. They also provide carry and conceal classes. There are many veterans who feel alone, who are struggling because of injuries or circumstances and aren’t able to work or make friends. This organization steps in and creates one giant family among veterans and wounded veterans from all different branches, from the military to local fire and police departments. They’re giving back to those who gave so much so we can enjoy our freedom.
HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE
Donations help with projects and outings for the veterans and much more. 100% of donations go to the veterans and families.
