L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F

Hello June! So we’re now almost halfway through 2017 and halfway through the So6ix issues for the year – how is that even possible? Time flies when you’re having fun, and it’s been a fun year so far! Tons of great events, new restaurants to try, great concerts and so much more going on in Oklahoma. Speaking of things to do, it’s gearing up to be a busy month full of numerous festivals and festivities. What better way to kick off summer? Throughout the metro and even outside it, there are more than 50 events going on every week and weekend in June. We break down some of these great events for you. A BBQ contest, historic car shows, wines and crafts, hot air balloons, woodworking – there is a festival for just about anything and anyone this summer. It’s a great time to get out and explore our great state and all it has to offer. You may learn something new, meet great new people, see something you’ve never seen before – and you’re guaranteed to make memories you won’t forget. Many of the festivals are free to get in and are family friendly.

When you’re not festival-n’ this summer, get out and find our city’s great food trucks! Sit outside, soak up the warmth, and support these local eateries on wheels. You won’t regret it, and neither will your belly. You can find their calendars in this issue. Festivals, food and fashion – it sounds like this summer is already gearing up to be one to remember! We can’t wait! We hope you have a wonderful, fun and safe month and that you make memories that will last a lifetime. Love & light,

Lauren Wright

DESK DETOX + Alleviating Back Pain with Soul Yoga

Sitting is the new smoking – it can wreak havoc on your body. Weight and pressure settling into the hips can cause tension to creep up and down the body. Our shoulders are not designed for all the forward movement we do when sitting at our computers, and our posture can suffer. As a result, the upper back can take on a new rounded shape. These habits can cause effects that radiate through the neck, upper back and chest as well. Set a timer every 20 minutes to move away from your desk, stretch, and do what feels natural. Halfway through your workday or post-work, add these 5 yoga poses to get your body feeling good again. Kick that nasty sitting habit!

so6ix.com | JUNE 2017

INTERLACE + NECK ROLLS From a seated or standing position, reach hands behind the back and interlace fingers, bringing the palms together. Bend the elbows and set the clasp on the outside of the right hip. Make sure to draw the right shoulder down and the right elbow back. Hold this arm position and breathe in. As you breathe out drop your left ear toward your left shoulder, stretching the side of the neck. From there, begin to roll your chin across the front of your chest and move your right ear toward your right shoulder while focusing on your breathing. Repeat the neck rolls for 5 deep breaths, then repeat on the opposite side.

CAT/COW VARIATION For this one, you’ll get into a tabletop position on all fours. Keep your hands under your shoulders while spreading your fingers wide. Put your knees under your hips, hips’ width apart. Turn your hands to the side and around until your fingers point toward the knees, the heels of the hands are flat, and the underside of the forearm is turned forward. Inhale, drop the belly, and look up, broadening through the chest while lifting your tailbone to the ceiling. Exhale, press into the floor, and round the upper back, lifting the belly and drawing the tailbone downward. Alternate between these two postures for 5 rounds.

HALF-HAMSTRINGS STRETCH From the tabletop position, step your right foot up to the top of the mat, landing in between your hands. With hands on either side of your front leg, inhale and draw your front foot forward until you feel a stretch in the back of the thigh while also keeping your back hip stacked over your back knee and both hips square to the top of the mat. The front leg does not have to be completely straight to benefit from this stretch. Flex your toes back toward your shin to stretch the back of the calf. To activate more deeply, shift your sitting bones back as your chest moves forward down the long leg. Hold for 5 deep breaths and then repeat on the opposite side.

LOW LUNGE From the half-hamstring stretch, ground the weight back into your front foot, aligning your front knee over the ankle. Draw the back leg toward the back of the mat and lower your back knee down on the lower quadriceps muscle, making sure you are forward of the kneecap. For less of a stretch, keep your hands framing your front foot; to deepen the stretch, inhale and bring both hands on top of the front thigh. While engaging your core, lean your back hip forward until you feel a stretch on the front of the back leg. Hold for 5 deep breaths and then repeat on the opposite side.

RECLINED FIGURE FOUR Lie on your back and stack your feet flat on the mat under your knees. Place your right ankle on top of your left thigh just below your knee and flex the foot. Keeping this position in the legs, inhale and lift your legs off of the mat. Reach your arms around to the back of the left thigh while resting your head and upper body on the mat. Draw your thigh toward your chest and keep your feet flexed. Use your right elbow to apply pressure to the inside of your right leg and open up the right hip and thigh into the stretch. Hold for 5 deep breaths and then repeat on the opposite side.

When summer rolls around it seems like there are more activities than we know what to do with – not that we’re complaining! We hope we don’t hear you say you’re bored or that there’s nothing to do, because we’re letting you know about the best festivals happening here in the metro and around the state, celebrating everything from corn to ice cream, from woodworking to historic cars. There is a festival for just about everything and everyone this summer, and we encourage you to get out and visit some of them! Many are located in quaint towns where you’ll be able to support local communities, and you might learn a little about our state’s history along the way. Most of the festivals outside of OKC aren’t more than a two-hour drive, and many of them are much closer. So this summer, grab the family, hop in the car for a quick road trip and get out and experience something new! You’re going to find so many wonderful things our great state has to offer.

PUPPY OF THE MONTH Eurasier

This fluffy pup is somewhat of a newcomer to the doggy world. A cross between the Wolf Spitz, found in Germany, and the Chow Chow, they eventually bred true, and this new breed was born in 2008. Eurasiers are devoted to their family, but aren’t the world’s biggest cuddlers. They’re independent, smart and make great watchdogs: alert, but not too noisy. For a medium-sized breed they have a relatively low activity level and can live happily in a home, apartment or condo. Don’t be afraid of the thick coat; they’re fairly easy to groom. Just give them a good brushing once or twice a week. This is a great family pup! 46

READS FICTION

A MAN CALLED OVE – FREDRIK BACKMAN Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon. He has staunch principles, strict routines and a short fuse. Behind the cranky exterior is a story and a sadness. This is a feel-good read from overnight sensation and Swedish blogger Fredrik Backman. You’ll cry, laugh, hurt and smile. You won’t forget this one anytime soon. THE MARTIAN – ANDY WEIR You might be a little late to the party: the movie based on this book was released in 2015. Regardless, the book is worth a read. An astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assumes him dead. This book’s full of thrills, science, ingenuity and comedy.

REDEEMING LOVE – FRANCINE RIVERS One of the highest-rated and highest-sold books through Barnes and Noble, this book is a retelling of the biblical love story of Gomer and Hosea, set against the backdrop of California during the Gold Rush of the 1850s.

NON-FICTION AT HOME IN THE WORLD: REFLECTIONS ON BELONGING WHILE WANDERING THE GLOBE – TSH OXENREIDER This book chronicles Oxenreider’s adventure around the world with her family, seeing, smelling and tasting the widely varying cultures along the way, and discovering what it truly means to be at home.

INGREDIENTS:

• • • • • •

1 oz gin 1 oz Campari 1 oz sweet vermouth 3 oz freshly squeezed blood or navel orange juice 1 1/2 to 2 cups ice, preferably crushed Fresh thyme sprigs, for garnish

DIRECTIONS: 1.

In a blender, combine the gin, Campari, sweet vermouth and orange juice. Add ice and blend, starting on the lowest setting and increasing to the highest setting.

2.

Check the consistency. If you’d like it thicker, add more ice. Pour into chilled glasses and garnish with thyme or fresh orange. Enjoy!

ALL THESE WONDERS: TRUE STORIES ABOUT FACING THE UNKNOWN – THE MOTH Forty-five unforgettable true stories about risk, courage and facing the unknown, compiled into one book by the storytelling phenomenon The Moth. You’ll read stories from all walks of life, from Louis C.K. to an Afghan refugee to a young female spy from World War II. An eye-opening and impactful book. THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE – DIANE ACKERMAN The Zookeeper’s Wife is now a movie, but as always, we recommend reading the book first. This is a true story in which the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo saved hundreds of people from the Nazis after their zoo was bombed.

SUN'S OUT BUNS OUT

EATS Sun’s out, buns out – UR/BUN, that is, the coolest new concept to grace our city. The creator of Chae, Daniel Chae, has brought Korean steamed buns to Uptown 23rd at the historic Tower Theatre. If you’ve never had this Korean food favorite, the best way we can describe it is like a fluffy, flavorful cloud pocket of heaven. Stepping into UR/BUN, you feel as if you’ve walked into a hip eatery in New York City. It’s small, narrow and quaint, with only a few tabletops and a couple of bar tops that stretch the length of the walls. UR/BUN’s simple menu comprises six different steamed buns, two different types of fries, soft serve and soda pop – but honestly, once you taste these flavors, you won’t need anything else. The bun options are pork belly, fried chicken, duck, mushroom, crab and a daily special. Each individual bun is filled with other tasty components, like house-made pickled onion. We can’t say it enough: these fluffy clouds are packed full of flavors you didn’t know you needed in your life. We will always eat fries in any form, and UR/BUN’s veggie fries, made of roasted parsnips, carrots and sweet potato, are fried to a perfect combination of crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They may just become your favorite thing. Can we talk about their sauces for a moment? Made in-house (hallelujah!), these flavorful creations include burnt honey thyme (AKA perfection), house jang, sweet gochujang, and Szechuan. Trust us: order the extra sauces, you can never have too many. The people are great, the location is great and most importantly, the food is beyond great. We love the concept and are proud to have UR/BUN in Oklahoma City. We recommend you make a visit very soon!

FOOD TRUCK FEATURE

SAUCEE SICILIAN

For the last three years, Saucee Sicilian has been dominating not only Oklahoma’s food truck scene but its pizza scene as well. Their praise actually goes beyond the Oklahoma borders – they have been voted one of the top four pizza food trucks in the nation for the last three years. That’s a huge honor! The idea behind Saucee Sicilian started when owner Gannon wanted to get out of the medical industry and work for himself doing something he truly loves: making Italian food. Inspired by his great grandmother, he and his mother decided the public should be able to enjoy their delicious family recipes and make every day feel like a family Sunday dinner. And so Saucee Sicilian was born! It’s special to see a truck run by a mother and son who have a passion for serving the public. If you’ve ever visited the truck, you know they love what they do. And we’re pretty sure it makes your day too, because everything they’re serving up is beyond delicious. Their menu features many different creative pizza options; their infamous meatballs, Sauce & Balls; and the Buona Vita, a melty chocolaty dessert you can’t pass up. Saucee’s work has not gone unnoticed by Oklahomans or by the culinary world. Recently they were listed as one of the top pizzerias in the world in a new book titled “Where to Eat Pizza,” a guide to the best pizza places from a restaurant critic with the New York Daily News. Fun fact: Saucee is serving up close to 2,000 pizzas per week during the spring, summer and fall! That’s how you know it’s good. Don’t miss your chance to find them this month! We can’t get enough and we have a feeling you won’t be able to either. 54
