Happy June! It’s the month that marks the beginning of summer – let’s all do our happy dance! Did everyone have a good May? I feel like it flew by, but what’s new? Since we went straight from winter-ish to summer-ish, I hope everyone was able to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather we had! I did my fair share of golfing, painting outside and finding the best patios to enjoy. If you thought May was great, just wait until you see what June in Oklahoma has in store for you all! In this issue you’ll find a breakdown of the best festivals and festivities to attend all summer long in the metro and surrounding areas. We’ve got celebrations for everything from ice cream to hot air balloons, from blackberries and wine to country music and crawfish. Not only are most of the festivals family friendly, but a majority of them are FREE! We definitely recommend checking out the websites of each so you can plan ahead for age limits, schedules and pricing. So you can’t say this summer is going to be boring – it will be anything but. We encourage you to get out and visit some of them and experience something new. You’ll be glad you did! With summer rolling in hot (pun intended), we rounded up our favorite fashion must-haves for summer with our local boutique and fashion store friends. Outfits, sunglasses, accessories, shoes and more – you’ll
discover great finds for both men and women in a wide range of prices, styles and colors. As always, we encourage you to shop local when and where you can! Happy shopping & happy reading! Speaking of which, one of my favorite sections of this month’s issue is Summer Reads, where we recommend books to read this summer. If you know me, you know I’m a major book nerd and proud of it! So naturally, I get excited when other people want to read along with me. Be sure to check it out, and if you have any book recommendations for me, I would love to hear from you! lauren@so6ix.com I hope you all enjoy this summery issue and it gets you into the swing of things! I hope you soak up each moment this summer and make new memories along the way. Little moments and big memories are some of life’s greatest joys. Love & Light,
Lauren Wright

He’s only 1 year and 2 months old, so he has plenty of playful energy. Sometime that energy can come off as mischievous, but in the fun-loving, sweet way, of course. But honestly, how can you say no to those eyes? You’ll probably become his best friend if you feed him jerky strips, his personal favorite. Max has quite the talent for digging holes underneath fences, in collusion with the neighbors’ dogs, and loves a good game of fetch in his spare time. After all the playfulness subsides, he is full of loving cuddles. Max is an absolute joy to his family. Want your puppy to be entered for our local puppy of the month? Email: LAUREN@SO6IX.COM 50

EATS HunnyBunny Biscuit Co., or as we refer to it, Biscuit Heaven, is one of the newest faces on booming 23rd Street in Uptown. This genius concept comes from the creators of Interurban and Packard’s, two beloved spots that have been feeding Okie bellies for a long time, so you know they know what they’re doing. HunnyBunny found a home next door to the historic Tower Theatre. They’re serving up breakfast, lunch, and if you find yourself there in between those times, brunch! The menu, as you’ve probably guessed, is 90% biscuits – really, really delicious biscuits. The biscuits are made from scratch and you can definitely taste the love, flakiness and butter in each bite. HunnyBunny has created some really tasty and unique biscuit sandwiches. You’ll find all kinds of different toppings within these fresh biscuits, like pepper jelly, jalapeño cream cheese, peanut butter, or pickled green tomato relish. Each biscuit is piled high and packed with flavor. After tasting quite a few, we found it’s literally impossible to pick a favorite. So we recommend you just start at the top of the menu and make your way down the list over multiple visits. Biscuits are the star of the show throughout the rest of the menu; even the salad comes with biscuit croutons! Though everything we tasted was seriously delicious, we feel we need to take a minute to brag on the biscuit French toast. It’s not your normal French toast with fluffy bread (obviously), and WOW. It works, and it works really well. It could be the thickness of the biscuit, it could be the large amount of sugar – either way, we’re die-hard fans now. Whether you’re into sweet or savory, whether you’re a little kiddo or even a grown-up trying to eat healthier (go for the yogurt & fresh fruit), there’s something on this menu for you. It’s a great spot for a business lunch, a ladies’ brunch or a hearty breakfast before school. You should probably be able to tell by now, but we’ll spell it out for you – we L-O-V-E HunnyBunny Biscuit Co., and we have a feeling you will, too.

O K IE POKIE 2418 N. GUERNSEY AVE., OKC, OK 73103 405.605.5272 | FACEBOOK.COM/OKIEPOKIEOKC After Guernsey Park closed this year, its creators and owners – the same people who brought you the local favorite Chick-n-Beer – opened this new concept in its place. Okie Pokie has quietly been in the works for the last three years. Poke is summed up as next-generation sushi. It’s a bowl of fresh fish cuts that is completely customizable, from the rice to the toppings. It’s been widely popular for a while in coastal states like Hawaii, California and Florida and has finally made its way to Oklahoma City! You can either dine in the restaurant or take it with you. It’s casual but so fresh and oh-so-delicious. You can choose from premade poke bowls, but we recommend building your own bowl so you can eat exactly what you want, how you want. Be a little adventurous with your choices; they’re all delish!
BUTTERMILK PASE O 605 N.W. 28TH ST. SUITE A, OKC, OK 73103 405.605.6660 | BUTTERMILKOKC.COM Buttermilk Paseo is the newest sister restaurant to the beloved Waffle Champion. If you’ve been in OKC a while, then you probably recognize the name from the food truck that fed a lot of people a lot of great biscuits. The concept grew and made its way to the Paseo for a brick-and-mortar restaurant. The menu features biscuit sandwiches, biscuit minis and a few delicious sides and extras. I wish we could pick one must-try biscuit sandwich, but honestly we recommend making your way through the entire menu. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on the cheeseburger biscuit, chicken and gravy biscuit, or cinnamon toast mini biscuits covered in vanilla buttercream. Hello happiness! You can enjoy this spot at breakfast, brunch or lunch – they’re open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day.
M A M AV E CA ME XICAN & PER UV IAN RE STAURANT 4433 W. BRITTON RD., OKC, OK 73120 405.286.5535 | MAMAVECA.COM Mamaveca, originally in Norman, has opened a second location in northwest Oklahoma City! Mamaveca showcases a traditional approach to both new and old Mexican and Peruvian cuisine. Peruvian cuisine combines the flavors of so many different cultures and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the greatest in the world. Now you can get a taste of that right in your own backyard, without having to travel to another country. The owners are striving to offer the truest flavors at affordable prices. There is something on the menu for everyone, with Peruvian dishes like the Lomito Saltado and Papa a la Huancaina, and Mexican classics like tacos, burritos and chimichangas. The extensive menu is filled with so many great dishes that you’ll have to try for yourself!
TAZIKI’S MEDITERRANEAN CAFÉ 1389 E. 15TH ST., EDMOND, OK 73013 405.285.9005 | TAZIKISCAFE.COM Taziki’s is a popular restaurant that has been taking the country by storm, and it recently found a home in Edmond! Taziki’s was created after the owners vacationed in Greece and fell in love with the food and culture. They did their best to capture the feeling of family and friends around the table, combined with the healthy Mediterranean lifestyle. The menu features real, homemade food with interesting flavors. They’re putting the emphasis on health by offering primarily plant-based foods, replacing butter with healthy fats like olive oil, using a lot of herbs and spices, and keeping everything fresh. They have plenty of delicious salad options, fresh-grilled gyros, Mediterranean deli-type options, and platters that will leave you happily full. There is something for everyone on their menu, especially those with dietary needs or allergies! 54

GIVING FOR GOOD
CENTER FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.
2,003 counseling sessions were provided for children and families.
93% of children in counseling reported an increase in knowledge and use of techniques to improve behaviors.
Bringing Up Babies completed 677 home visits, providing education to new and expectant parents.
The Baby Pantry provided 66,862 diapers to families in need.
586 volunteers dedicated 7,149 hours to help further the CCFI mission.
*Based on the 2016 Annual Report
Center for Children and Families began in 1969 as a shelter for youth (birth to 18 years old) who needed a safe and nurturing place while waiting to be placed by foster care. While the mission is still the same – to improve the lives of children – they have branched out their reach to many different ways of healing children, empowering youth and strengthening families. They offer strength-based programs and services to aid and educate families coping with abuse, neglect, divorce, separation, teenage pregnancy, out-of-school care and more. In 2016, 12.8% of Cleveland County’s children were living in poverty, almost 700 cases of child abuse and neglect had been confirmed, and roughly 12,200 children experienced hunger. That’s just in one county alone. These experiences directly shape these kids’ futures and we are certain the Center for Children and Families is making a massively positive impact.
HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE
VOLUNTEER
They are so many opportunities to give: their annual fundraiser, holiday wish lists, in-kind donations through the Baby Pantry, or their program-specific wish lists and planned giving. See their website for more information.
They offer a variety of volunteer opportunities available year-round for individuals and organizations who are interested in making a difference in a child’s life. Must be 18 years or older. Younger children can volunteer with adult supervision in special assignments. Contact Melanie Hetherington at 405-364-1420 or MHetherington@ccfinorman.org.
