L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F

Hello Spring! I’m so ready for spring to be here. Not that I don’t love winter and all the fun and tradition that comes with it, but I’ve had my fill and I’m ready for my favorite season of the year. Spring is the most beautiful time to be in Oklahoma. Nature begins to come alive with color and bloom and seems to wake up from a long hibernation. The city wakes up a little too, and everyone starts getting out of the house for patio season. Spring brings limitless activities and adventures, events and monthly gatherings throughout the city and at our numerous parks and lakes.

down the different types of nail services. You will also love the unique and helpful fashion apps we feature, which can help you pick and manage your wardrobe.

New seasons also bring new styles. Every March we look forward to showcasing what some of the best stores and boutiques in the city have for the spring season. Local stores always work hard to find unique trends and bring them to the city to keep all of us in style (thank goodness). We hope you enjoy our photo shoot in this month’s issue. Our staff worked very hard with local models, salons and boutiques to bring it together.

We hope that you enjoy our March issue. Thank you OKC for your continued support that allows us to do what we love. We will always work hard to keep you in the know and showcase why it’s great to be an Okie!

One of the big highlights of my month was getting to do the food review at Moni’s Pasta and Pizza. Holy cow, it’s a delicious Italian restaurant, and its reputation and popularity are quickly catching up to its quality. Next time you’re feeling some Italian food, Moni’s is a must.

This issue is also packed with great fashion articles. We partnered up with Polished Nail Salon, who helped us showcase the must-have nail colors of spring and break

nail knowledge For many women, nail salon time is part of the monthly routine, but some people don’t even know where to start. There are also plenty of common misconceptions about artificial nails that can cause confusion. We break it down so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Acrylic Nails

A consistently popular option, acrylic nails are one of the longest-lasting and most durable types of artificial nails. They can be painted any color and are a great surface for designs.

Pros:

They’re durable through everyday wear and tear! Acrylic is a great option for people who are active.

Cons: If not properly done and removed, they can leave the natural nail slightly brittle or damaged.

Gel Nails

Gel nails are formed on top of your original nail through a liquid chemical gel, which is then set and hardened under a UV lamp. The UV lamp releases a heat and light which cure the nails to be styled as desired. Like acrylic, gel nails come in numerous colors. One of the most common misconceptions is that there are two different kinds of gel: gel and shellac. Shellac is actually just a brand. So make sure to ask for gel nails, not shellac.

Dip Powder Nails

Dip powder nails are the perfect balance between real and artificial. There are multiple layers that go into making a dip nail: base coat, powder and sealant. This mani lasts up to three to four weeks, which is ideal for anyone. Although it’s been around for a while, it’s just now starting to gain popularity. Don’t be scared when you see that the powder isn’t the exact color you’ve chosen – it will change once the sealant coat is added.

Nail Polish

The most natural salon option you can do for your nails is just painting nail polish on top of your natural nails. Although it doesn’t last as long as any of the other options, it is virtually non-damaging to your natural nails. There are countless colors and designs available. It’s also the quickest process of all the salon options.

Pros: Gel

nails are considered more natural looking, since they are formed on top of your real nails, and in most cases they do much less damage to the natural nail.

Cons: Gel nails can be more costly to maintain.

Pros: It lasts on average from three to four weeks. Cons: As with any kind of material put on your nail, it can be slightly damaging or harmful – although many believe dip to be the healthiest option.

Pros: Typical

nail polish is non-damaging to your natural nail beds.

Cons: The color only remains unchipped for a few days at a time.

Fashion + Tech: Apps Stylect Apple + Android Cost: Free Think Tinder, but for fashion. The Stylect app is a great way to find the perfect shoes and fashion items at great discounts. It’s been downloaded more than 1.5 million times, so you know people are kind of addicted. You can search through different categories, like shoes, clothing, coats, and home décor items. When you find something you like on Stylect, it will give you a breakdown of the product with information like the fabric, style and pattern, so you know exactly what you’re interested in. At that point you can either add it to your basket or to your wishlist for purchasing later. One thing we love: many of the items available are already discounted by a percentage. Stylect wants you to know about the sale, so they’ll notify you of what sales are happening and what has been reduced in price. You’ll never want to stop swiping, we promise.

Affordable yet fashionable: we’re always down for a good sale.

Technology has made a strong presence within the evolving fashion world. You don’t have to drive to the mall and spend an entire day finding the perfect dress for your event or the perfect pair of jeans to fit your body type anymore: there’s an app for that! There are so many great apps out that are immensely useful and productive, and here we’ve named just a few that we love. Believe it or not, there’s an app for just about every fashion-related question, need or want. Even if you’re skeptical of these services, we urge you to give them a try if you’re curious. From insane discounts to style assistance to hassle-free shop-from-home deliveries – you can transform your style and wardrobe with just a little help from your device. Check them out!

Hunt Apple + Android Cost: Free

Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen an outfit on a stranger and wondered what brand the shoes were, or had the perfect shirt in mind but couldn’t find it anywhere. The Hunt brings roughly 4 million of your newest and most wonderful fashion friends together to help each other out, you included. All you have to do is post a photo of the item you’re on the hunt for, or type in a few details, and the Hunt members will be able to tell you where you can buy it, the brand, or other helpful information. You can input your budget so the Hunt members don’t recommend a similar buy $400 more than you’re willing to spend. Here are some of the valuable features to try:

• • • • •

Start a hunt for an item you’ve been dying to have. Solve a hunt for another member if you know where they can find their must-have trend. Poll the community to ask which shoe to wear with your outfit or which purse to buy. Vote on others’ polls. You can lend your style advice! Browse different tutorials, beauty blogs and so much more.

Shop for anything you find on The Hunt, and you can even save the products to your wishlist for later.

Stylebook Apple Cost: Free

Get the most out of your closet with Stylebook. For the price of a bag of chips or your daily latte, you get a closet assistant with more than 90 amazing features that help you curate your closet and plan outfits and accessories with a few clicks and taps. At first it’s a tad tedious uploading images of all of your clothes and accessories to the app, BUT if you can get past that, it’s totally worth it. You’ll have your clothes at your disposal for planning and pairing for anything that may come up. You select items out of your closet to create versatile looks, and the app saves them. You can even do amazing things like plan for a vacation with the app. No more overpacking: it organizes and plans out what you’re going to wear and when on the calendar. There are more features than we can break down here, but each different tool is extremely useful, and you’ll quickly wonder how you lived without Stylebook.

What we love: you can click on OUTFIT SHUFFLE and have the app shuffle your closet uploads like a deck of cards to reveal what new outfit ideas have been hiding in your closet all along.

22

so6ix.com | MARCH 2017

Polyvore Apple + Android Cost: Free Polyvore is an app that lets you be your own stylist by helping you discover outfit ideas and shop products you love from the top brands and retailers. Creating outfits and looks has never been simpler, but watch out – it’s addicting. All you have to do is find items you like and match them all together to complete a full outfit from head to toe. It’s super helpful for when you’re stressing about what to wear or what things would look reasonable together. If you don’t have the style bug, Polyvore can help you discover new products, looks and the latest trends to get you in the know. With very little time, you’ll know exactly what you’re doing, what looks you want and how to be the most stylish you can be.

Tailored for you: You don’t have to browse through every kind of shoe, and we love that. If you’re only into pumps or high-top sneakers, you can look through those exact categories for what’s in style or for sale and where.

PS Dept. Apple Cost: Free

Have you ever been all over town to three different stores in one day looking for something specific, but you can’t seem to find it? Say hello to your new fashion personal assistant: PS Dept. There’s almost no effort at your end: all you have to do is send a shopping request of what you’re looking for via the app to one of their many experts. They do all the legwork and source it for you. If you find something you like from the selections, your card is charged for the product that you purchase on the app. Overall, it’s a genius app: you get the assistance you need without having to waste your time searching all over. Many of the options on this service are high-end luxury fashion brands like Chloe, Stella McCartney and more. PS Dept. takes care of everything: searching, ordering, ensuring the product is delivered and helping to handle any returns. What happens if the item you want is out of stock where they found it? No problem. The team will scour the globe for offline inventory. If it’s out there, they’ll find it for you. This app will have you feeling like royalty. Happy shopping!

You should note: there is a 5% service charge for sourcing products found outside the app’s retail network of brands. A plus: by being a customer of the PS Dept. app, you get access to discounts before anyone else and first dibs on VIP preorders that go live.

Cloth Apple Cost: Free

If you’ve lived in Oklahoma even just for a little bit, you know that the weather changes drastically almost daily, no matter the season. People either love it or hate it, but we can all agree that sometimes it’s hard to know what to dress for when one day might be 73 degrees and beautiful, and we might get an ice storm the next day. Cloth helps you sort through what you’re going to wear to match the weather. They have a partnership with the weather service Weather Underground, giving you access to real-time weather data, which in turn plays into the rest of the app with helping you with what to wear. You can shoot, save and organize your favorite outfits to help keep you organized. You can instantly see your best outfits for the current weather. In addition, with Cloth you can access the best real-time street style right from your phone. You can see what real people are wearing around the world by city, category or weather. One thing’s for sure: it’s a time saver!

Major Plus: If you’re running iOS 8 or later, you can wake up to an alert with the weather and a recommendation on what you could wear to coordinate with the conditions outside. Hello extra 10 minutes of sleep!

Meet the Italian sweetie, the Lagotto Romagnolo. This breed was just recently recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2015. They are known to be keen, affectionate and undemanding, great for families who are looking for a go-with-the-flow kind of dog. Lagotto Romagnolos love to take long walks and are an overall healthy breed in general. If you’re looking for a hypoallergenic pup, this might be the one for you. Their curly hair doesn’t shed and only requires occasional trimming. They’re a whole lot of fluff and a whole lot of love!

EATS East Coast eats have arrived in Edmond! Moni’s Pasta and Pizza sits in the Deer Creek area – not the usual kind of place that comes to mind for authentic Italian cuisine, but this restaurant will make you feel like you’re on the coast of Italy. The original owner of Moni’s, Moni Kaba, lived and worked in Italy since the age of 15, where he discovered his true calling of owning a restaurant. He moved to the US in 1974 and opened his first restaurant in Connecticut before exploring and expanding to Florida, Texas and eventually Oklahoma. In 2014, Moni’s was looking to sell, and they found the perfect fit in husband and wife duo John and Rachel Foster. Rachel is a classically trained chef with experience under Gordon Ramsey’s sous chef in Los Angeles, and John brings his business experience to the table. Moni’s is now more popular than ever, with delicious food you’ll be thinking about for days. They’re serving up the true East Coast Italian classics: numerous pasta dishes, homemade Caesar salads, and gourmet pizzas the size of a car tire. When you first walk in the restaurant, you immediately notice the warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s cozy. You feel as if you’re in an old pasta eatery in Naples or down in Little Italy in New York City. It’s more than just a place to eat – it’s an experience. One of the many things we love about the food at Moni’s is the unique and delicious flavor combinations. For example, their pizzas are anything but ordinary: yes, you can order them plain, but we recommend pairing fresh bacon with ricotta and pepperoni, or the Diangelo, which is topped with a fried egg. One thing we heard locals rave about over and over was the bread. We thought, bread? Really? Let us tell you: it’s worth all the raving. It’s handmade every day and will probably change your life. You can feel the love and effort put into every dish, into the pasta, the seasonings and the sauces. Everything is fresh and filling. Bring an appetite and leave room in your fridge for leftovers. The portions are generous, and we’re not complaining – you’ll want to eat it again and again. We love that there is now a local spot that serves up true Italian dishes boasting rich tradition and flavor. For lunch, dinner or even just dessert, Moni’s is a place we know we’ll keep coming back to.

One of the newest spots in town, En Croûte is a restaurant, bar and fromagerie in Nichols Hills Plaza. En Croûte is cozy and eclectic: it has the feel of a quaint European café, but with an American twist. Its casual menu focuses on highquality ingredients. There are plenty of snack-type foods, like charcuterie boards and freshly baked breads and pastries, and plenty of choices around the clock. You’ll find items like omelets and Dutch baby pancakes for breakfast, tasty sandwiches and fresh salads for lunch, and a little more upscale fare for dinner, like the Lamb Shoulder and Sausage or the Pan-Roasted Rainbow Trout. En Croute is quickly becoming a local favorite among us Okies: it’s totally different from what we typically get in the city, and we love its uniqueness.

If you’re a wing and beer person, you’re in luck with Chick N Beer! This new restaurant and bar on 23rd Street is focused on unique and bold wings with an emphasis on all things local. Their wings are made from Crystal Lake’s free-range chicken, and all the beers on tap are from the finest Oklahoma breweries. The comfortable atmosphere will make you feel right at home while you eat wings and drink beers with your buddies. They do so many delicious flavors, like Mango Thai Chili and BBQ Honey Red Curry, but they don’t forget about good old traditional wings. Chick N Beer does more than just wings, though: you’ll find delicious appetizers like kimchi fries, roasted shishito peppers, sliders, sweet potato fritters and so much more. Seriously, you’re going to want to try everything on the menu. They’re open for lunch and all the way through late-night.

Tamashii Ramen is serving up authentic ramen (the real deal!) made fresh using Japanese techniques. The owner and chef spent some time in Japan learning from local ramen chefs, to bring the taste and feel of Japanese ramen shops right here to Oklahoma City. You get the authenticity without the travel! Like their restaurant space, the menu is quaint, and you can’t go wrong with any choice on it. Each ramen bowl can be customized to your liking, with options like jalapeño, butter corn and roasted seaweed. They also have vegan ramen if you’re interested only in the delicious broth and veggies. While the ramen is the star of the show here, don’t ignore their garlic fried rice. It’s handmade to order and you can taste the care and attention. Their potstickers are fantastic too, filled with flavorful pork and cabbage. Tamashii is a great place to try something new!

Power House, in the historic Farmers Public Market District, is beloved amongst Okies of all stripes: foodies, musicians, cocktail connoisseurs and more. The first thing you’ll notice is the historical charm and eclectic character of the building and the unique surroundings. Then you’ll notice that this spot serves up seriously delicious food. One item they’re famous for is a must order: Chile Pork Verde. They also have interesting eats like Spicy New Mexico Peanuts, Scott’s Chipotle Chile Fudge Pie, and Hawaiian Pig Biscuits with homemade habanero jam. If you’d like a drink to pair with the amazing food, they have their own list of specialty cocktails and a full line of craft beers with an emphasis on local Oklahoma brews. It’s a great place to hang with friends and catch a local musician playing while enjoying truly good food and drinks.
