It’s springtime! I don’t know what has made this year different from past years for me, but I am so done with winter. Maybe it’s because this winter didn’t seem to give us very many “nice” days. Anyway, spring is here and I am extremely excited about it. Our awesome city gets livelier as people crawl out of their hibernation caves and get active. Patio season, lake season and golf season start to fire up. Green grass, full trees, blooming flowers and warm weather are on the doorstep! Last year at So6ix, we took a hard look at everything we are doing. We wanted to figure out the good, the bad and what we need to work on. We have always tried to support local and promote the locally owned and operated businesses throughout our city. Everyone always says they love how we feature little hole-in-the-wall restaurants and showcase local artisans. We know it’s very hard to keep up with or even find out about a lot of the local businesses, even though they’re right here in our backyard. While we have done some of these things very well, somewhere in there we were not giving local retailers the attention they really deserve. Local retailers work so very hard to hand-select products they believe in, gain expertise, and help you find the

right things for you. They provide a convenience unmatched by the internet, share advice and know-how to help even after your purchase, and present a hand-selected assortment of goods that are unique to their stores. We are very excited to be showcasing local retailers in several issues this year. We have dedicated 4 issues to giving you an inside look at local retailers and their products, and we’ll even introduce you to the people behind these awesome shops. They were all hand-chosen by us because we know and stand behind each of them as great and reputable businesses that will do you right. So when you’re doing some shopping this month, please check out our great locally owned and operated partners. Not just because supporting local is very important, but because these people and their businesses are great and they will take great care of you. Thank you,

shop Local meet your local stores & owners One of our most favorite things about the state of Oklahoma is the endless support of all things local. This movement to shop for locally made products and frequent local businesses makes us so proud of our fellow Oklahomans. Our streets and districts are booming with locally owned shops selling items that vary from clothing to gifts to shoes to home décor. The owners of these stores are what make them special. They take pride in their stores and in their state, and it shows. With the convenience of online shopping, it’s more important than ever to support the local shops. If there’s something you’ve been searching for online, there’s a good chance you can find it locally and for a better price. Each item in these stores is handpicked and carefully chosen by the owner, and more often than not the selections are one of a kind. We hope that you get to know your local business owners and invest in them as much as they have invested in you and this community. As always, we encourage you to shop local when and where you can. 28

Blue Seven is a local staple. Owners Caleb and Julie Arter have owned Blue Seven for over 13 years now, and it has grown tremendously over the years – they’ve almost taken over their entire shopping center building. From quirky gifts that are all about Oklahoma (many of them locally made), to the largest candle selection you’ve ever seen, to an entire denim room, to men and women’s fashion – there truly is something in this store for everyone. There is probably not another store that sells such an eclectic mixture. You’ll find things you didn’t know you needed (or honestly, that existed). The friendliness of Caleb and the staff, the homey feel of the store, and the experience as a whole has made the shoppers here into regulars. If you haven’t stopped in, do yourself a favor and please do. 30

Chances are if you’re a longtime resident of Oklahoma City, then you know of Gil’s. Gil’s has been a shopping destination for both men and women since 1987. The store might look quite different since then because of its growth and from keeping up with the times, but it’s still owned and operated by local Gil Mitchell. The store wouldn’t be where it is now without the help of his buyer and manager, Jamicia Wylie. The two have been a team for years and years. Gil and Jamicia often frequent fashion markets to stay on top of the latest trends for both men and women. They keep a great mix of both in the store. One thing that can’t be overlooked about Gil’s is their infamous Denim Bar. It’s a bar, for jeans! You’ll find every high-end brand, color, wash and fabric you can imagine. If you’re looking for a new pair of jeans, this is your spot.

Rosegold is one of the newest boutiques on the scene, but it’s quickly taking it by storm. Rosegold was built on the notion that everyday women’s wear should be simple, elegant and of good quality. Rosegold opened its doors in May of 2016 and just recently opened up shop in Tulsa, in February. Owner Amber Kern has worked in fashion for over a decade in both Austin and Los Angeles, and she wanted to bring a fresh fashion perspective back to her home state of Oklahoma. She has brought in brands that she’s truly excited about with the goal of contributing to the growth of our community. Rosegold is a thoughtful collection of established favorites and indie designers, and it primarily focuses on American-made and ethically/sustainably sourced brands. This shop is not just fast fashion. They have pieces you don’t see everywhere else, and that’s so special. You’ll find everything from casual apparel to loungewear and accessories. It’s a must-stop on your shopping day.

The newest owner, Dave Trent, worked under the original Dick Story, starting in 1977 and lasting until 1996 when he finally purchased the shop from his mentor. In the 23 years since, Dick Story Optical has grown exponentially. There is an art to framing the face and Dave Trent is gifted with that art. The store is quaint but packed with the most fashionable trends in eyeglasses and sunglasses. Dave Trent works directly with each customer to help them find the right pair for them. farm to high fashion

Tener’s is the mecca of western wear. Tener’s has been a long-standing staple in Oklahoma since it opened its doors in 1930 in the Stockyards. In the mid-’70s it moved to the current Oklahoma City location, and they have since opened other stores in Edmond, Shawnee and Texas. You’ll be greeted by the smiling faces of their great staff, who are ready to help you pick out anything: boots, belts, hats, outfits, gear and more. Tener’s showcases recognized brand names and all different styles, from things you’ll wear out on the farm to high fashion you can wear out on the town. At any given time they have more than 1,000 pairs of men’s boots, 800 pairs of women’s boots and 300 pairs of children’s boots to choose from. If you’ve never been, it’s a sight to see. Literally, it’s “cowboy” boots for as far as the eye can see in every color, style, heel size, toe shape, finish and price point. There’s something for everyone and every style. No cowboy is complete without a hat, and at their hat bar you can find the perfect fit for you for any season. If you don’t think “western wear” is for you – we encourage you to at least stop in and see. You’ll be surprised at how many high-fashion pieces they have that can be everyday wear. Tener’s is a gem and we’re so glad to have it here in our city. so6ix.com | MARCH 2019

Balliets has been a legacy in Oklahoma City since it was founded by Edna Balliet in 1936 in the historic Skirvin Hotel. Now it is proudly owned by local Bob Benham, who has built Balliets a brand-new home in the popular Classen Curve. This store is unlike any other in the city. The building’s luxury design makes it the perfect home for their goods. We love that they have so many wonderful skilled stylists in all departments to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. But they aren’t shopper stalkers, don’t worry. This is a high-end department store on a local level. They will come to know you by name and by your style, and that’s something you can’t get at a large city department store. One of our favorite things about it is the Balliets spa room, where you can enjoy luxurious facial or body treatments for ultimate pampering and relaxation. Balliets is carefully curated to reach a wide range of customers. Shoppers of every age and style preference will find something they love at Balliets while always being right on trend. CHEF CURRY TO GO

EATS Chef Kendall Curry and his wife, Lisa, are doing something special at a quaint and casual dining spot over on Western Avenue. Chef Curry To Go is whipping up a twist on modern American comfort food. Chef Curry, the owner and executive chef, has been a part of the Oklahoma City restaurant scene for more than 27 years. He’s had a hand in some of the most beloved and recognized restaurants in the city. After starting out at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, he racked up 15 years at the Ranch Steakhouse, 501 Café, Rococo, and West. Having built his reputation for exquisite cooking, now he is putting all of his passion, creativity and love into his own restaurant. The atmosphere is so welcoming and you’re always greeted with a smile from one of the Currys, and they take care of you like family. Don’t be fooled by the name – yes, you can take it to go, but there are plenty of seats where you can enjoy a warm lunch inside. (Side note: we love that they’re supporting local artists in their décor, so be sure to check it out while you’re there.) Not only is Chef Curry To Go using the freshest ingredients, but every order is cook-to-order, meaning you’re going to get the hottest and most delicious food possible. These dishes are unreal: each one is packed full of fresh flavors, and you can taste the love in every bite. Not only do they offer some of the best food in the city, but they make it easily accessible. They do online ordering, curbside pickup and even meal prepping. If you can’t make it in as often as you’d like or are working towards some health and fitness goals, their meal preps are a great option for weekly lunches and dinners. You can order online or over the phone by Friday and it’s ready for you to pick up the following Monday between 2:30 and 6:00 p.m. If you’re looking to feed a large group, you definitely want Chef Curry catering your next event. You and the guests will both be equally happy! We can’t brag on Chef Curry and his food enough. Try it for yourself and you’ll know what we’re talking about. It gives you a feeling of “home,” and there’s something very, very special about that. 5701 N. Western Avenue, OKC, OK 73118 | 405.608.8050

The menu has so many great options: curries and stir-fries, seafood, soups and salads, fried rice, noodles and so much more. Panang makes every sauce inhouse, and you can taste the love in every bite. Each dish is so full of flavor and unlike any other Thai food we’ve had in the past. Our favorite part: their lunch special. It’s offered Monday through Friday, and for only $8.75 you get a mountain of food with different selections every day. It’s a quality place run by the sweetest family, and their food is really, really, really delicious.

S O CIA L D E CK + D INING 1933 N.W. 23RD ST., OKC, OK 73106 405.602.8705 | BESOCIALOKC.COM A new restaurant, Social Deck + Dining, has found a home in the spot that was formerly Chae Korean. Jordan and Jamie Winteroth love the ability restaurants have to bring people together like family. They love food and they love people, and that makes for a great recipe for Social. The menu feels familiar, with a lot of American cuisine. If you’re a brunch person, lucky for you – they are offering brunch every day of the week! You no longer have to wait until Saturday or Sunday. They have so many great shareable plates, and we recommend the breakfast board. It’s like a charcuterie board but for breakfast! If you’re more in the mood for dinner food, they have a great menu with plenty of salads, meats and soups to make your day. This restaurant is literally the best of both worlds.

UNIO N WOOD FIRE D GRILL 2920 N.W. 63RD ST., OKC, OK 73116 405.608.8866 | UNIONWOODFIREDGRILL.COM Union is one of the newest concepts in town. It’s inspired by a combination of popular worldwide cuisines, great wines, cocktails, and the star of the show – the wood-fired grill. Chef-owner Jonas Favela uses only the finest ingredients from local and dependable sources. You’ll find American, Italian, Latin and Asian flavors along with French and Italian techniques for memorable food and experiences. We definitely recommend their Jumbo Lump Crab Cake or their skillet cornbread cooked to order – it’s southern to a T. Of course you can’t miss out on any of the meats or fish cooked on the wood grill, which gives it the best flavor. It’s a great spot for special occasions, a typical Tuesday night dinner, or a stop for apps and drinks with friends after work.

LA BAGUE T T E D E E P D E UCE 100 N.E. 4TH ST., OKC, OK 73104 405.445.6272 | LABAGUETTEBISTRO.COM The longtime beloved restaurant La Baguette has opened up another location to service the midtown, downtown, Bricktown and Deep Deuce areas! La Baguette Deep Deuce is stunning. Of course, the food is the most important part, but the design and feel of the new Deep Deuce location should not be ignored. It’s a sister restaurant to their infamous location on May, and it still houses the same bistro and bakery tastes. The Parisian café has plenty of American twists that make the food unique yet familiar. It’s a great spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner – they truly have it all. Swing by after work for some of the most delicious cocktails around.

KEEP OKLAHOMA BEAUTIFUL Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

KOB painted 63 community structures in 44 communities with 865 gallons of paint.

In 2018, 2,673,383 pounds of trash were cleaned up over 2,003 miles.

6,740 flowers and bulbs were planted last year.

10,558 trees and seedlings were planted last year.

It’s such a beautiful thing to watch our state grow at a phenomenal rate, and we need to do everything we can to keep it clean and beautiful. Keep Oklahoma Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. It is run through contributions, grants and corporate partners. They have several yearly events to help encourage taking care of our state, and to teach the public how to do it. One of the events is Fresh Paint Days, where volunteers seek out unsightly community structures and renovate them with donated paint and supplies, a little creativity and a lot of elbow grease. Another program is the Great American Cleanup – everything kicks off on March 1 and ends on May 31. Don’t miss this opportunity to spruce up your community this spring. Our state is busily continuing to grow and fill up with new faces and places, and it’s up to us to keep our space clean and thriving for generations to come.

HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE

VOLUNTEER

You can donate funds to Keep Oklahoma Beautiful to help pave paths to a more healthy, sustainable and beautiful Oklahoma.

Volunteers are always welcome for events that help beautify our state.
