May is here! Last year, when we took a look at upcoming homethemed issues for 2019, we wanted to bring fresh ideas to the table. Our Home Issues have been extremely popular since we started focusing on the industry a few years ago and showcasing all kinds of local vendors and their products and services. We work with phenomenal interior decorators, home builders, real estate agents and local home furnishing stores who help us put together the best magazine we can. The trick has been trying to utilize and showcase the work of all these great local professionals and fit it into a single issue. We have done our very best to change up the theme of our home issues each quarter so that we can diversify and pay proper tribute to all the great local home businesses in OKC. So, we have a new theme we are very excited to roll out in this Home Issue: making your backyard life even better! In combining our current partners’ products and services with several new ones, we have put together a great pictorial shopping guide to help you with your Outdoor Oasis. You will find everything from amazing pools and top-of-theline spas to outdoor furniture, fancy fire pits and amazing landscaping. All of this comes not from images pulled off the internet from companies all over the world, but from local vendors right here

in OKC, helping you to support local business owners in our community. There is a lot going on in the month of May. We have Mother’s Day and Memorial Day this month, when we give due respect and attention to people who definitely deserve it. Also this month is the annual Made in Oklahoma Festival in Midwest City. This is such a great event every year that brings together tons of locally produced products: clothing, shoes, arts and crafts, food, beer and wine, all made in Oklahoma. This is all complemented with professional concerts from local musicians, making make this a mustattend event each year. Make sure and come out for it this month, and come by the So6ix Magazine booth and say hi! Thank you for picking up our magazine and for your continued support. You’re the reason we work so hard to make this magazine the best it can be. Sincerely,

FRIDAY & SATURDAY | MAY 10-11, 2019 REED CONFERENCE CENTER | SHERATON MIDWEST CITY HOTEL Midwest City’s eighth annual Made in Oklahoma Fest, presented by Hudiburg Auto Group, is back May 10 and 11 at the Sheraton Midwest City Reed Conference Center, located at 5750 Will Rogers Rd. The festival has officially partnered with the MIO Coalition. Admission and parking are both free. On Friday the event is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday’s hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The festival features a full day of activities and entertainment, with fresh new experiences lined up for attendees as well as yearly favorites. Festivalgoers will enjoy live performances from local musicians on both indoor and outdoor stages; the coffee and car show, featuring cars, trucks, and motorcycles; a educational Children’s Zone; a painting class from Pinot’s Palette on Saturday; and over 80 local vendors, including wineries, breweries, distilleries, restaurants, food trucks, artists, and merchandise retailers. Be sure to come thirsty. Oklahoma wineries showcase an extensive variety of whites, reds and special blends all made in our great state. Breweries will offer a selection of ales, lagers and specialty varieties as well, all for sampling. And trust us when we say you’re definitely going to want to.

Commemorative festival glassware and 10 tasting tokens can be purchased on-site for $22 so you can enjoy some of each! It’s a great opportunity to taste and try what these purveyors have to offer, whether you’re already familiar with them or not. We love this event for so many reasons. Number one, the people. You get the rare opportunity to meet several of the vendors and owners firsthand and personally learn about each product. And two, the goods. You can taste and try and learn about so many different products: food, drinks, soaps, shirts and more. You’ll probably walk away feeling a real sense of pride to be supporting local. We know we always do – we believe it’s so important, and what better way to do so than with a “one-stop shop” at the Made in Oklahoma Fest? There are plenty of activities and things to see and try for every age, so plan to bring the whole family out and enjoy the day. It’s a quick drive, just minutes from downtown OKC. This “state of great tastes” provides an unparalleled showcase of local flavor and culture. More information on the entertainment lineup and vendor directory is available online at MadeinOklahomaFest.com.

This ad does not do a MassaRossa Luxury Home justice.

Sure, the photograph makes it look amazing. The luxury. The craftsmanship. The indulgence. You probably even said to yourself, “Now, this is a house I could live in!” But you shouldn’t make that decision based on an ad. A MassaRossa Luxury Home is to be experienced. That’s how a house you could live in becomes

the home you choose to live in.

MEET SINATRA!

Owners: Price, Robyn and Avalon Sonkarley This handsome fella is a 10-month-old Pomsky pup (Pomeranian mixed with Siberian Husky). Sinatra loves living in Deep Deuce and he frequents the dog park near Anchor Down to help take care of any fallen French fries while catching the Thunder game. Sinatra lives up to his name, being a crooner and a charming ladies’ man. His favorite person in the world, though, is his baby human sister, Avalon; he’s so proud of her! With a swish of his constantly curly tail, a stroke of his silky fur and one look into his ol’ blue eyes, you’ll be swooning for this friendly fluff ball.

BEDLAM BAR-B-Q

EATS It’s a state divided, and not always by sports teams – sometimes it’s by BBQ loyalty. If you’ve been an Okie a while then there’s a good chance your loyalty lies with Bedlam Bar-B-Q. This long-standing Oklahoma staple has been serving up our community some of the best BBQ in the state for the last 16 years. This family-run and operated business is the result of a lot of love and hard work over the years. Their family recipes have stood the test of time, while at the same time the menu has continued to grow because of their creativity in the kitchen. The atmosphere feels like home, and you can see tributes to Oklahoma history throughout the restaurant. One of our favorite parts of Bedlam Bar-B-Q – besides the food, obviously – is the amazing back patio. You’ll feel like you’re on a back porch in the breezy countryside while still conveniently being in the heart of the city. If you want to really soak up how great their patio is, be sure to swing by every Saturday night for live local music from 7-10 p.m. Bedlam is making sure to serve you the best of the best no matter what you order. They offer all-natural when and where they can, like their beef, which is all-natural and grass-fed. You won’t find high-fructose corn syrup in any of their tasty BBQ sauces. Their hot BBQ sauce is one of the best we’ve ever had in all our years of BBQ tasting. It’s the right amount of heat and sweet, and you’re going to want to put it on everything (don’t say we didn’t warn you). But in all honesty, their smoked meats are so good just as they are – they truly don’t need any sauce, and we mean that. Each piece of meat is carefully tended to for hours and hours at every stage of the process, resulting in award-winning smoked meats. Of course, it’s important for a restaurant to have really great food (which Bedlam does) and an atmosphere that you enjoy being in (which Bedlam does). But since Bedlam is locally and family owned and operated, you’re treated like family from the moment you walk through the door, and that’s something special that you can’t find just anywhere. This is some of the best BBQ in the state, hands down, and we have a feeling if you try it once, it might just change where your BBQ loyalty lies. 610 NE 50th St, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73105 | 405.528.7427

CA FÉ UYE N 501 S. MUSTANG RD., YUKON, OK 73099 405.577.6266 | FACEBOOK.COM/CAFEUYENOK Yukon is home to one of the newest Vietnamese restaurants in town. Café Uyen is serving up authentic Vietnamese dishes and drinks. The drink menu is almost as extensive as the food menu, and for good reason – they’re insanely good. You’ll find refreshing fresh fruit teas, rich milk teas that are so full of flavor and sweetness, and dessert drinks like smoothies and brown sugar boba milk. Come hungry so you can try the delicious authentic Vietnamese cuisine. From grilled pork sandwiches to rice platters, vermicelli dishes and rice noodle soups, there are so many great dishes to taste and try. Everything in this quaint little spot is packed full of flavor, and we have a feeling if you try it once, you’ll be back again and again.

THE PR ITCH ARD 1749 N.W. 16TH ST., OKC, OK 73106 405.601.4067 | PRITCHARDOKC.COM The Pritchard is far from your average wine bar. It’s an all-day neighborhood café and bar serving up breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. And you’ll still find all of the boutique wines and craft cocktails of a great wine bar. The food should be praised: each dish is carefully crafted with the most delicious ingredients and flavors that you didn’t know you needed. They have small plates like meatballs in a walnut romesco as well as larger entrees like short rib pasta and fried chicken thighs. Don’t skip out on their housemade doughnuts for dessert, dipped in salted caramel ganache. If you haven’t tried their brunch, you’re seriously missing out. It’s so good, and honestly you’re going to want to go weekend after weekend to make your way through the menu.

WHIS K E Y BISCUIT BAR & GRILL 322 N.E. 2ND ST., OKC, OK 73104 405.673.7944 | WHISKEYBISCUITOKC.COM Deep Deuce has a new spot that’s serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner. Despite its name, you’ll find more here than just biscuits – much more. Their menu features breakfast items like omelets, wraps, quesadillas, platters, waffles and avocado toast, plenty of lunch items like po’boys, burgers, salads, nachos, wings and sliders, and dinner entrees like steak, mahi mahi and pork chops. There is something on this menu for everyone – promise. Whiskey Biscuit stays open late, so you can come enjoy delicious beers and cocktails in the lounge while snacking on some of your favorites.

CA FÉ K ACAO 3325 N. CLASSEN BLVD., OKC, OK 73118 405.602.2883 | CAFEKACAO.COM Café Kacao has been the dream of the Del Cid family for close to a decade, and it continues to grow and thrive each and every day. This breakfast hot spot is full of homestyle Guatemalan favorites and Latin-themed cuisine. It’s literally impossible to pick a favorite off the menu, so we suggest just working your way through it. You can’t go wrong with the classics like huevos rancheros, chile rellenos, tacos, and smothered burritos, but you’re also not going to want to miss out on choices like the Machaca, Migallas Con Chorizo, or Cobanero Omelette. Whatever you do and no matter how full you are, make sure you order the French toast. It’s a classic in itself, with the crispy brioche bread cooked to perfection.

GIVING FOR GOOD

LOVEWORKS LEADERSHIP Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

85% of students reported picking up a technical or social skill at Loveworks.

Loveworks serves a student population representing grades 4-12.

To date, the program has reached over 10,000 students ages 9-18.

With Loveworks, students increased letter grades in more than 275 courses, with over 150 As replacing previous Bs, Cs, Ds and Fs.

Since 2011, Loveworks Leadership has been changing the lives of students ages 9 to 18. They do it all, from mentoring and teaching to guiding to feeding these kids. Their programs are designed to empower the creativity, resourcefulness and potential within each student. They are helping to develop their character and academic and leadership abilities to ensure future success. Hundreds of volunteers and community leaders come together to help make the leadership projects, community outreach programs, personal character development events, and mentorships happen. They’re discovering these kids’ potential, helping them shape their own stories, affirming their ideas and helping them pursue action. They mentor and feed kids snacks and dinner in their afterschool program. Loveworks hosts weeklong Summer Leadership and Business Start-Up camps that provide hands-on learning tailored to each student’s unique interests. Kids can try out robotics, fashion, art, photography, video game design and so much more. They’re truly getting an amazing experience they may never have had if it weren’t for Loveworks. 70% of students believe they have discovered their passion through Loveworks, and 85% reported picking up a technical or social skill. The impact Loveworks has on these kids’ lives will have profoundly positive effects for their future, and for society as a whole.

HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE

VOLUNTEER

Donations are used in a lot of different ways. Mentorship and leadership resources, snacks and dinners, sponsoring Concept grounds, and so much more – your donation makes a difference in making the students’ dreams come true.

Loveworks is fueled by volunteers and they can always use more! You can apply to volunteer in numerous ways, including afterschool programs, summer camp leadership, the culinary team, administrative duties, and morning leadership classes.
