Hello! Not only is November one of my favorite months of the year, but our November District Living Issue is one of my favorites too. As our city is spread out over such a large land area, its identity has become broken into multiple different districts. Our awesome city has boomed over the last decade, and we have seen each little district of the city come to life. New ones have formed, and each one has grown its own social and economic identity. New restaurants, new retail, and new entertainment destinations have joined old staples of our communities. While we all love the growth of each unique district and everything each one has to offer, it’s also been tough to keep track of what is going on with each one. So we have worked very hard to capture each district for you. We want this issue to serve as your guide and tool to explore each of them. We adventured around all of these places ourselves to take photos, find the hidden gems, and give an in-depth perspective of what makes each of these districts great. So many people keep telling me that every month they pick up So6ix and use it as a checklist for what to experience in OKC. It has become popular to literally take a marker and cross off each spot we feature. I hope you try it out this month. As you go through our beautiful
districts spread in this month’s issue, make a plan to go to most or all of these spots and try them for yourself, then cross them off in the book. I promise you won’t be sorry – we always feature the best our city has to offer, and we have tried everything we feature for ourselves. Enjoy! I also have to talk about our Okie Honor Nominations that have now kicked off. It’s our 3rd Annual Okie Honor Awards! Please take a minute to nominate several of your favorite Okies and local businesses. It’s extremely easy and quick. Just find the category that relates to who you want to nominate, open a fresh text message, type the code for the category, and send to 55678. You will receive a message back asking who you want to nominate, and just reply with the name. You will even get a special deal from the #1 basketball team in the world, the OKC Thunder. Have fun nominating! Thank you for your continued support!

It’s no secret that our city is booming, and in the best way possible. We now have more districts than ever before. Each district is unique and special in its own way, whether it be the look, what businesses and residences take root there, or the kind of entertainment it offers. There’s no shortage of great homes, places to eat, shops to shop in and entertainment to keep you busy. Whether you’re here for a visit, looking to move, or just interested in what’s outside your bubble, we hope you get out and enjoy these great districts of Oklahoma City.

O R G Back in the day Automobile Alley was home to numerous car dealerships, hence the name. Now the area is booming with trendy local restaurants – everything from burgers to high-end steaks and from breakfast to cocktails. This district is definitely not lacking in shopping or entertainment. Most of its homes or living spaces sit atop the ground-level retail spaces. It’s a young and vibrant area that caters to any age, but young professionals in particular are migrating here, with the average resident age being 32 years old. It’s a great place for socialites and an ideal location, just blocks away from Downtown, Midtown, Deep Deuce, Uptown 23rd and Bricktown.

NICHOLS HILLS+ CLASSEN CURVE N .W. 6 3 R D & N . W E ST E R N AV E . NICHOLSHILLS.NET Nichols Hills has long been home to many oil and gas businesses, so it only made sense that the area quickly began to fill with great shopping and delicious eats. It has continued to evolve and develop over the years and is a highly desired and talked-about suburb, home to some of the city’s most beautiful residences. Classen Curve opened in 2010 and has since remained the main focal point for Nichols Hills. It’s filled with great shopping, entertainment and food. Fun fact: after a separation from Oklahoma City back in the ’50s, Nichols Hills became a full-service city government, which includes water, police and fire services. So technically it is its own city, even though most consider it a district.

It’s only two miles in length, but it’s packed full of things to eat and buy. One of the best things about NOMA is its monthly activities for the community. The widely popular Coffee & Cars, where you can see and enjoy all things motor vehicles, is on the first Saturday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Northpark Mall parking lot. They also do food trucks, live music and more on the second Saturday of every month. It’s a new district, but it’s long been serving the residents of OKC with great shopping, food and homes.

This historic stretch in our city has many iconic architectural structures, like the Tower Theatre, the Gold Dome, the Milk Bottle Building and more. You can get down on OKC’s favorite cupcakes, take dance classes, and watch Thunder games while diving into hot wings. Each spring you can partake in Open Streets, when parts of N.W. 23rd are closed off for fun activities for roughly 40,000 attendees. And that’s just one of the many great things to attend in the area. It’s a year-round great time at Uptown 23rd.

It’s the original entertainment district, housing baseball, movies, events, arcades, the canal and water taxis, dance houses and more. This area has no shortage of great food to enjoy as well. Over the last few years Bricktown has also been emerging as a highly sought-out place to live, with a boom in apartment living spaces. Much of Midtown’s housing is made up of townhomes and apartments full of great amenities, with the bonus of walking distance to just about anything you could need. Midtown is also home to some of the city’s best rooftop views. You can grab a cocktail at Packard’s, O Bar at the Ambassador, or atop Café do Brasil. DOWNTOWN OKC OKLAHOMA CITY D OW N TOW N O KC . C O M Downtown Oklahoma City living has really come full circle. Back in the early days of our city, many lived in this area, but a lot of those people eventually moved away into the suburbs as our city limits continued to grow. Many people, both young and older, are now coming back to our (mini) concrete jungle. There are several living spaces atop our skyscrapers, giving Oklahomans a taste of the city life. Many restaurants and retail shops have migrated downtown to cater to people working and living here. Living downtown can have many perks; for one thing, you’re at the center of everything. No matter where you want to go in the metro, you can get there in roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Another plus: constant entertainment and activities within walking distance. This area is continuing to grow, and it showcases so many of the great things about living in Oklahoma.

It’s an artsy community, home to many different types of businesses: galleries, locally owned eateries, studios, performance venues and creative spaces. You can experience Oklahoma’s premier professional theatre company, the Lyric Theatre, which puts on a variety of phenomenal shows. You can paint and drink away your evening at Paint N’ Cheers or walk the Plaza Walls’ vibrant alleys. Many of the homes in the area are older and for a long time were not the most well-kept, but this is changing as younger crowds, including young families, move to the Plaza District. It’s a place that will continue to grow and grow, and we are ecstatic about it.

After dark, the south part of this area turns into a barhopping scene, with many great options to choose from. Western Avenue has become home to some of the most loved yearly festivals and events, like West Fest, Taste of Western, and now Wheels on Western, which celebrates all things cars on the last Saturday of the month. C O M Okay, so this area technically hasn’t been deemed a district, but we’re taking it upon ourselves to do so because there are too many great things on the far north side of the city to leave out. For starters, Chisholm Creek is a mixed-use development that has dining and shopping, living, golfing and businesses. The area is full of apartments and homes, and it has no shortage of things to do as it continues to grow. There are many entertainment spaces and miles of walking/biking trails planned, with easy access from major areas in the city and state. It’s a destination highly sought out by both locals and those visiting. We can’t wait to see how this trendy area grows in the coming months and years. As you work your way further west down Memorial, there’s a plethora of great dining and entertainment options that you’re going to want to try. Decorating your living space doesn’t have to break the bank or take up all of your time. With a little elbow grease, you can make any of these décor items all by yourself. It’s a great way to add your own personal touch to your living space and truly make it a home. Happy decorating!

Pumpkin Succulent Planters Credit: maisondepax.com
What You Need: •
Pumpkin-shaped container OR styrofoam pumpkins
•
Potting soil
•
Scissors
•
Varied small succulents
•
White paint
Instructions: 1.
If you’re using a pumpkin-shaped container that already has an opening and is the color you want, then you can skip this step. If you’re using Styrofoam pumpkins, using scissors or a box knife, cut a circle with an inward angle around the top. Dig out around the inside to leave a small bowl-shaped hole for potting. Paint the pumpkin white and let dry.
2.
Insert a sufficient amount of potting soil into your pumpkin and pot small succulents. Water as needed, but don’t overwater, as there is no hole for the water to drain from the bottom.

so6ix.com | NOVEMBER 2017
1.
Stack the three squares on top of one another in this order, from the bottom up: felt; one piece of flannel, right side up (if your fabric has different sides); and the other piece of flannel, face down.
2.
Pin your fabric sandwich in place and begin sewing around the edges with a 1/4” seam allowance. In the middle of one side of the square, leave a 2 1/2” gap so you can flip the coaster right side out.
3.
Trim any excess fabric from around your seam. At the gap, flip the coaster right side out. If you flip it correctly, the felt will be tucked inside between the two pieces of flannel.
4.
To close the gap, top stitch around the coaster on all four sides.

PUPPY OF THE MONTH Chusky
You might be thinking, “A what?!” A Chusky is a fluffy, lovely mix between a Chow Chow and a Siberian Husky, so you know this breed is guaranteed to be a fluff ball. These cuties don’t stay small forever, though. They can reach anywhere from 40 to 65 pounds, but they’re gentle giants. They’re extremely affectionate, loyal and loving. They bond very strongly with their owners and can be protective – in a good way. They’re fairly easy to train, and it’s recommended that you put in the time with them so they don’t become destructive or unruly. Chuskies need a decent amount of exercise and space to roam, so an apartment might not be ideal, unless you frequent the dog park. As this is a large breed, a nutritionally balanced diet is important. This is a great dog to snuggle with this coming winter. 48

EATS St. Mark’s Chop Room in Nichols Hills is the newest concept from the team that brought us the beloved En Croûte. This quaint and cozy spot is right next door to it’s sister restaurant. It’s an intimate neighborhood joint for steaks, fine wines and spirits in Nichols Hills Plaza. The name St. Mark’s came about from one of the owners, Drew Tekell, who’s dad Mark passed away last year – this was a way to honor him and keep his legacy alive. We love this special touch. This chop house is supporting local in everything they do. Their melt-in-your-mouth steaks are from Iron Horse Ranch in Macomb, Oklahoma. You can taste the dedication and love in every bite from both Iron Horse and St. Mark’s, combined. Their steaks are all done in a cast iron and super simple with just salt and pepper and finished with a homemade secret seasoning unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. The cast iron creates a perfect crust on the outside of the tender steaks, leaving them with the perfect texture and juices flowing on the inside. Even though we think their steaks might be the star of the show, they’re doing much more than just steaks. St. Mark’s is whipping up everything from truffle roasted chicken to butter roasted Maine lobster. We need to focus on this lobster for a second, because oh my goodness, it’s GOOD. That is an understatement, but just trust us when we say you have to order this at least once in your life. Moving on, we’re self acclaimed creamed corn aficionados over here, and we feel compelled to let you know that St. Mark’s Chop Rooms creamed corn is hands down the best we’ve ever had. It’s so creamy, so flavorful with flavors you’ve probably never tasted in a bowl of creamed corn. We won’t judge you if you order just a bowl of this for yourself, because we know we’re going to next time. Always, always, always finish off your meal here with a dessert. Their executive dessert and pastry chef is whipping up out of this world desserts that can’t be missed. If you can’t tell by now, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience at St. Mark’s. We also must mention their wine menu is exquisite. St. Mark’s is a place for special occasions, a place to watch a football game dressed casual, it’s a place for a girls night out and everything in between – it’s everything we never knew we needed. Bonus, they talk walk-ins and reservations so get on it. We encourage you to visit St. Mark’s soon, you’ll be more than glad you did. 50

Inspired by the owner’s family kitchen, the streets of Bangkok and restaurants as far south as Phuket and as far north as Chiang Mai, Thai La Moon is bringing you authentic Thai cuisine. This new spot is located in the Deer Creek area near Pennsylvania Avenue and 178th Street. Their appetizers, entrees and desserts are packed full of the flavors and aromas of Thailand. If you’ve been to Thailand, they want to remind you of the food you’ve had, and if you’ve never been, they want you to leave their restaurant with a yearning to visit. Their food is affordable and delicious. You’ll find spring rolls, tom yum soup, curries, duck, stir-fried noodles, fried rice and more. There’s no shortage of Thai sweets to finish off your meal, so make sure you don’t leave those out, especially the sticky rice. We have a feeling if you try Thai La Moon once you’ll keep coming back for more. It’s too good not to.
One of the newest coffee shops to grace Edmond with its presence, Hashtag is anything but your ordinary coffee shop. Hashtag is a waffle, coffee and dessert house where you can get the best combination there is – coffee and sweets! They’re whipping up waffle batter in fun shapes like fish and bananas that you can top with extras like chocolate, Nutella, blueberry, Bavarian cream and more. Their waffles are something special, with topping options of vanilla, strawberry or chocolate ice cream and caramel, chocolate or strawberry syrup. Since they’re best known for coffee, you’ll find deliciously made lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, macchiatos and regular coffee. It’s a great place for a quick morning pickup (but keep in mind they don’t open until 10 a.m.), a meeting or to catch up with friends. We have a feeling the kiddos might love this place even more than you. What kid doesn’t love a sweet waffle piled high with more sweets? It may be sugar overload, but it’s worth it.

Sun’s out, buns out – UR/BUN, that is, the coolest new concept. Korean steamed buns have finally made their way into Oklahoma and have found a home on Uptown 23rd at the historical Tower Theatre. If you’ve never had this Korean food favorite, the best way we can describe it is like a fluffy, flavorful cloud pocket of heaven – seriously. This quaint eatery has only a few tabletops and bar spaces lining the walls, but it lacks nothing in the flavor department. They have a simple menu, with different buns and two types of fries, but once you taste them you won’t need anything else. They also make some of the best made in-house sauces you’ll try. You can never order too many. What we love about this spot is that it’s so different from your typical restaurant. It’s quick, quaint, unique and oh so delicious. We encourage you to get out and try something new!
The Drum Room Fine Fowl & Fixin’s is your quintessential fried chicken and waffle eatery in Oklahoma. Located in the popular Western Avenue district near other local favorites like Sushi Neko and Musashi’s, The Drum Room offers up some delicious fried chicken options, but they’re best known for their fried chicken and waffles. Each chicken is seasoned with a secret spice blend and fried to perfection. While the chicken and waffles might be the star of the show, you don’t want to overlook some of their other items, like their fried chicken nachos or their fried okra. You can even order a fried chicken and waffle sandwich that is piled high with chicken, bacon and cheddar. Yes, it’s a fried heaven in here. There’s nothing too fancy about it and that’s the way it should be. It’s an iconic place to grab lunch or dinner with your favorite people and dig in on some fried chicken!

CHEF RAY'S STREET EATS
Some of the city’s most delicious street food comes from Chef Ray’s Street Eats food truck! Chef Ray’s began in 2015 after Ray had been a hotel executive chef for 33 years. It was his long-held dream to start his own restaurant, and he felt a food truck would allow him to continue chasing his first love: cooking. He takes absolute pride and joy in serving others great food face-to-face, and you can definitely feel it when you visit his truck. Chef Ray’s fare can be characterized simply as comfort street food. He goes to great lengths to prepare the menu items from scratch in small batches: everything from grinding their own mustard to making their signature hickory syrup and slow smoking the pork. Their fried chicken is the star of the show, and they insist on using only fresh hormone- and antibiotic-free chicken. It is seriously some of the most flavorful, juicy and tender fried chicken we have ever had, hands down. You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu, but we have to recommend their infamous chicken ’n’ waffles, featured on the Travel Channel’s “Food Paradise” show. It definitely lives up to the hype – order it, trust us. Their options change frequently so you know you’re never going to get stuck with the same monotonous menu (but don’t worry, the crowd favorites are always available). This truck has won many awards and once you’ve tried it, it’s no surprise why. Their State Fair award-winning banana pudding is what dreams are made of. Chef Ray’s Street Eats has been ranked in the top 101 food trucks in the US for 2016 and 2017. They’re doing more than just daily stops: they also offer a variety of catering solutions, ranging from drop-off to fully catered formal services. So keep them in mind for your next event! This truck is something special. The ownership, food knowledge, unique flavors, homemade quality and everything in between: Chef Ray’s is a food truck Oklahoma City is lucky to have. 54
