Hello! Every year when fall arrives, I am reminded of how much I love it. The outdoors turns into a kaleidoscope of color everywhere you look. As leaves keep dropping and the temperature continues to creep downward, I think of Thanksgiving, Christmas and all the family time that I love so much. I come from a very large family to say the least. My parents’ home is filled with so much love around the holidays, as all five of us children come home to enjoy our time together, catch up on everything we have been up to all year, and stare in awe at how fast all the kids are growing up. I am the youngest of five children, with four older sisters. All four of my sisters have children, so I’ve been an uncle all my life, and I adore my nieces and nephews and the time I get to spend with them. We all wish there was more time to spend with those we love, so the holidays are always such a great time in my life. We have a great issue for you this month! As our home issues keep growing, opportunities to work with more professionals in the industry have really helped us put together some great issues. So6ix takes great pride in working almost exclusively with local businesses and bringing our readership a true guide to everything local in OKC. We know that most of you are already very familiar with what
big national brands have to offer, and you want to know what you can find here in your own backyard from the locals. Hopefully as you turn through this issue you will find tons of products that you love and can get right here at a local Okie business. We’re staying up with the trends, which in turn means you get to stay up with the trends! Also this month we worked with and featured several professional and extremely talented local interior designers. All of them are well established and have very inspiring portfolios of past and current work. Working with each of them was a great pleasure and we are very proud to be affiliated with them and showcase their great talents in So6ix Magazine. I hope that you enjoy this issue. We worked very hard and put our best into every page. Thank you so much for your optimism and continued support for everything we do. Sincerely,
LET’S GET ORGANIZED! with the Container Store
BATHROOM Is your master bath or guest bath a clutter collector? Do you have an unending amount of expired bottles, makeup, and cleaning supplies? You can get this fixed and make your bathroom a place of peace again. Steps: 1. Take out everything underneath the sink and go through it. Make piles for keep and trash. 2. Measure your space below and be sure to take into account the area of the sink drain. 3. Work around these obstructions by using stacking bins and drawers. Within those drawers you can place extra-small bins or containers to store items like Q-tips, cotton balls and nail polish. 4. Use a handled tote to make grabbing cleaning supplies easy and keep them neat. 5. Make use of the doors on the cabinets. This can be a great space to hang cabinet door organizers that can hold bulkier items like hair dryers and hot tools. 6. If your drawers have become hectic, measure and find a drawer organizer that gives each item a space of its own to minimize clutter.

Our home should be our haven, but with life comes stuff and with stuff comes clutter. Drawers get stuffed, closets overflow, cabinets become a wreck and well – you get the picture. Does this sound familiar? If so, it might be time for you to get organized! Organization leads to peace of mind, which is so important in our hectic and busy lives. It also gives you extra time because you’ll eliminate searching and wasted shopping trips buying items you already have. We know this can be a daunting task – but we promise it’s worth it in the end! Here in OKC, we’ve just gotten our very first Container Store and we could not be more excited! They’re the infamous king and queens of organization, with solutions for everything: closets, garages, laundry rooms and even traveling. With their help, we’re going to get you organized! You can thank us (and them) later. You can do this! Set aside an evening or two, a small budget and you’ll be sorted out in no time.
GARAGE The garage can become a madhouse for storing and collecting just about anything and everything. Do you even have room for your car or bikes anymore? The garage can become a problem area for both men and women, but it doesn’t have to be! Steps: 1. If you’re a little overwhelmed, pick an area you want to start with, like tools, a storage space or recreational items. Once you know what you want to start with, start clearing out the space. Make your keep, donate and trash piles. 2. One of the best ways to store tools is on the wall, where they’re easily seen and accessible and don’t take up any floor space. Elfa utility boards are a vast improvement over traditional pegboards. Specialty hooks let you arrange tools and supplies anywhere on the board. 3. If you use Elfa for your wall, be sure to create a workstation near the tools and hardware. Add shelving, drawers and a work surface. The shelves that have connecting bins are great for items like rags, blades, sandpaper and larger tools. 4. For the sports gear, a multi-sport storage station with a heavy-duty rack and open bins is a great way to keep equipment separated and organized. 5. For seasonal items, large bins that are labeled and stackable are a great way to save space. They’ll also keep items clean and in proper condition while keeping them organized.

CLOSETS Whether you’re working with a small closet or a larger one, there’s a good chance it’s a little cluttered and you’re not maximizing your space to get the best use out of it. Whether it’s in your bedroom, a kid’s room or a guest room, the Container Store has so many different products that can make the most out of every inch of your space. Steps: 1. You’re going to want to take everything out of your closet to create a blank space to get started. 2. Your clutter problem might be a result of having too much that you don’t wear or need. Go through everything before putting it back and make keep, donate and trash piles. 3. Measure the width, depth and height of your closet space and shelves. This will help you know what size products you can work with. 4. Don’t let valuable space go to waste – use containers that maximize vertical space. Instead of letting the top shelf become a dumping ground, keep items from toppling over by storing handbags and seasonal sweaters and shoes in stacking drawers, shelves or labeled bins. 5. Make use of the floor. Stacking shoe shelves are an easy way to keep extra shoes from getting lost and keep everything in view. 6. If you’re working with a smaller closet, be sure to make use of the back of the door with solutions like hooks and hook racks. 7. If you have seasonal items, you may want to get clear storage boxes to put away items you only need in certain seasons, like coats, scarves, and shorts. You’ll be able to easily see their contents.

KITCHEN Kitchens typically have a lot of cabinet space, drawers and countertops, which can quickly lead to clutter. Let’s face it – we own a lot of stuff, and most drawers and cabinets aren’t built to hold as much as we have. But thanks to the Container Store, we can optimize all these spaces so we can better see and use what we have. Steps: 1. Whether you’re organizing the fridge, pantry, cabinets, drawers or countertop, take everything out. Then decide what you want to keep, donate and trash. 2. To make the most of your space, make sure you measure to get the most efficient and properly fitting organizational products. 3. When working with a large, deep cabinet that is typically used to store pots and pans, you can use commercial-grade pull-out cabinet organizers that are designed for holding heavy cookware and appliances. This will also keep you from having to shift everything around to dig in the back of the cabinet – you can just pull out the drawer and retrieve what you need. 4. For silverware and spice drawers, the Container Store has great drawer inserts that will give every item a place. 5. Between all of the snacks, appliances and extras, there’s a good chance your pantry has become a mess. The Container Store has so many multipurpose bins that will give every item its own space. The Large Undershelf Basket is always a great way to give you extra space in a shelf area without taking up space on the base of the shelf. Store your bulky box or bag items like pasta, cereal, nuts and coffee in stackable airtight containers.

Interior Design Tips Wallpaper is beyond IN. Find a fun patterned wallpaper that either complements your color palette or room, or becomes a focal point of design when used on one wall.
Finishes & Textures When decorating in the same shades, add different finishes and textures to give depth to the space, like these velvet chairs and mirrored end table all in shades of gray.
Pops of Color The power of white paint is undeniable but with a pop of color like this mural, it brings a colorful focal point to the room and design.
KMC Interiors kmcinteriorsinc.com
M
eet Meghan Cates! She is the mastermind being KMC Interiors and is taking old spaces and bringing them new life. Located in Oklahoma, KMC Interiors got its start in 2010 after Meghan’s passion for design started as young girl where her studies eventually took her to Florence, Italy where she studied art, interior design and architecture. Her design philosophy: there are no rules, and everything goes! Sounds like our kind of gal! Everyone’s style evolves and trends come and go, but what’s the most important is creating a space that inspires and is love by the client. Her interior design services focus more on remodeling and the architectural elements of interior design, space planning – including floor plans and 3-D renderings, project management and material and lighting selections for both residential and commercial spaces. No project is ever too big or too small. If you’ve ever wanted to redo a space, you probably had the most trouble with seeing the potential of a space but that’s where Meghan comes in and can space plan, redesign and create that vision. Yes, remodeling can be a little stressful any which way you look at it but Meghan really makes the process as fun and stress free as possible! Having a sense of humor through the process helps, because anything can happen, but anything can be fixed and laughing at the end of a hard day is so much better than crying. We can promise you that she will make you feel comfortable and relaxed through the entire process. KMC design style is pretty eclectic. You’ll find her mixing classic and modern elements together with neutral paint selections and furniture and then bringing in pops of color on accent pieces, tile, cabinetry or a fabulous rug. The possibilities are endless.

Exposed Wood Beams Although wood beams might make you think farmhouse, that’s not always the case! They add a great rustic touch and extra charm to even the most modern spaces.
Two-Tone Cabinet Colors Homeowners are embracing two-tone kitchen trends. Using two colors gives the kitchen more personality, and it’s a great way to bring in more color if you tend to go with a neutral or white wall.

Rhonda Kieson Designs kieson.houzz.com
S
ay hello to award-winning Rhonda Kieson! She is a local designer who has won Best of Houzz in either design or service for the last seven years – so you know she’s doing something right! Her projects range from small to huge, from a one-hour paint consultation to a two-year assignment that includes everything from designing new spaces to placing the last pillow. A major bonus – she has great rapport with all of her vendors, which is invaluable when things needed to be done “yesterday.” Rhonda wears many hats: she is an interpreter, a communicator, a liaison, a catalyst, a choreographer, a mentor, a worker bee, an extinguisher and a pragmatist. The designing is the easiest part. She can be the general contractor or she can be a part of the team; it’s always different and always enjoyable for both Rhonda and the client. She doesn’t confine herself to a specific style. When asked, she says, “My clients have a style. I make it happen.” Rhonda truly takes into account everything the client needs and wants and makes the entire process a great one. Every day is different, every client is unique, and the possibilities are endless, and she likes it that way.

PuppyMONTH OF THE
MEET CHARLIE!
Owner: Angie & Dick Heigle Say hello to this cutie, a 10-month-old Bernedoodle (a cross between a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle) named Charlie. This breed is well known for being intelligent, goofy, gentle and loyal, and all of these describe Charlie to a T. She will love you even more if you have her favorite treat – French fries! There’s a good chance if you get to meet Charlie, her tail will be wagging relentlessly. Charlie sure loves to play. She’ll play just about anywhere, but she absolutely loves the outdoors. She’ll sit and contemplate the ducks and geese that go by on the lake outside her house for hours. This sweetie has the perfect amount of puppy in her, and that makes her such a fun-loving girl! EATS Ocean fare and fish galore! Ocean Taste is the newest seafood restaurant to grace Oklahoma with its presence. Sure, there are a lot of menus around town that might feature a fish dish or two, but great seafood establishments are few and far between. That’s what makes this spot one of the newest favorites in town! Ocean Taste is bringing delicious fresh seafood straight to Edmond, Oklahoma. They have a variety of options: shrimp, crab legs, lobster, crawfish, green mussels, stone clams, catfish, oysters and so much more. You can order everything in different variations: four different types of seasonings, five levels of spice, and boiled or fried. We definitely recommend their popular boiling bowls! They’re piled high with the seafood of your choosing and filled with potatoes, corn and more options like boiled eggs and sausage. When they bring a bib to your table, definitely put it on – trust us. There’s no getting around it – it’s messy, but in the best way possible. If you’re swinging by during lunch, they have a great lunch menu that doesn’t skimp on the size. If you’re visiting with a large group, go for the Seafood Carnival, which comes with 5+ pounds of seafood and sausage with plenty of sides – it’s a party! We love that the menu is simple yet customizable. You’re getting truly good seafood that tastes incredibly fresh and is packed with impeccable flavors. There aren’t many traditional seafood joints left in town and Edmond is beyond lucky to have this one. Get out there and try this – run, don’t walk. From boiled pots served with corn and potatoes to fried fish baskets with French fries to fresh salads, hush puppies and baked oysters, you can taste your way through the ocean.

HA NK ’S COFFE E 1227 N. WALKER AVE., OKC 73103 405.778.6294 | HANKSCOFFEE.COM One of Midtown’s favorite little coffee shops is the quaint Hank’s Coffee! They’re providing great coffee and efficient service at a fair price. The atmosphere is welcoming, with vintage charm and modern amenities. Their great patio looks down one of the main streets in Midtown where you can see all the hustle and bustle. When you hear “coffee shop,” you immediately think coffee, of course. Yes, they do amazing coffee, but it doesn’t just stop there! Hank’s is serving up delicious wines and beers, several different types of tea, and some great food. They definitely play on the seasons and we love it: try their delicious pumpkin chai and pumpkin butternut spice flavoring. GIVING FOR GOOD
FOOD & SHELTER INC. Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.
Food & Shelter Inc. serves breakfast and lunch 7 DAYS PER WEEK to any person who is hungry – which on average is 250 MEALS PER DAY.
21% OF HOMELESS PEOPLE in OKC are families with children.
They own and On any given night, there are between operate a transitional housing program of 1,300 AND 32 HOMES, where 2,500 homeless families can live for individuals in the up to 2 YEARS with Oklahoma City care and support. Metro area.
It takes 85 HOURS PER WEEK at a minimum-wage job to afford rent on a 2-bedroom rental home.
For over 30 years, Food and Shelter, located in Norman, has been housing and feeding women, children and men who are hungry and in crisis. They believe food and shelter are basic human rights of every individual in the community, and they’re providing them to the most indigent residents, many of whom live on little to no income. They serve breakfast and lunch 7 days per week to any person who is hungry, and it doesn’t stop there – they provide food baskets to hungry families who may have to choose between buying food and paying rent. This helps with extra meals beyond lunch and breakfast and gives relief to those who can’t make it up to the campus. On the shelter side of the program, they provide short-term, long-term and supportive housing for individuals and families who are homeless. Just last year they completed the construction of their beautiful campus, which features 32 amazing homes for those in need. Not only do the residents here find a home, but they find friends, a support system and acceptance. No person can overcome life’s most difficult obstacles if they are hungry and worried about where they will sleep. Food & Shelter Inc. is feeding those who are hungry, wrapping their arms around the lost and alone, and helping them find their way back home.
