Hello October! I cannot be the only one who thinks this year is flying. October…what?! If time could slow down just a little bit, that would be great – but in all honesty I’m not too upset October has arrived because it’s one of the best months of the year! We finally get some cooler fall weather moving in, it kicks off the holiday season, we’re immersed in football and we have an excuse to eat candy for an entire month. Yes, please! October also kicks off a great food season. Menus start to change, soups and chilis come into play and more hearty dishes are made. It’s a great time for brunch! (Okay, is there really a bad time for brunch? The answer is no.) In this issue, we break down some of our favorite brunch spots and dishes that you’ll have to work your way through! You’ll find everything from Guatemalan food to cupcakes. I hope your next few weekends are filled with all the brunch goodness this city has to offer! After you’ve worked your way through the brunch list, we have some killer cocktails you’re not going to want to miss out on. Our city’s many talented mixologists are coming up with inventive and tasty creations, from sweet, bubbly or fruity to bitter, savory or sour. Please remember to drink responsibly & happy sipping!

EXQUISITE EYEWEAR SINCE 1971

This issue couldn’t be more packed full of great food and beverages if we tried (seriously, it’s a huge food issue). Don’t forget to find all of our great food truck friends this month. You can find their October schedules towards the end of the magazine. Talk about great food – you’re going to want to find them out and about, pronto. Food is something that brings us all together. It’s a universal love and a universal language. As the world seems to become more divided, I hope we can take a few moments to share a meal with the ones we love, with someone new, and with those who may need it. Make some soup, try some brunch and truly enjoy the day you’re given over some great food. We hope this issue brings you joy, as it did to us. Happy Eating!

BRUNCH PHOTOGRAPHY: LAUREN WRIGHT

Brunch is all the rage right now and honestly, we hope it never stops. Who doesn’t love brunch? It’s truly the best of both worlds, combined into creations that make us very, very happy (and full). Numerous spots across the city are doing brunch in their own creative ways that you’ll have to try for yourself. Guatemalan restaurants, your typical breakfast dives, high-end steakhouses and even cupcake shops – no matter where you go, you’ll find a delicious brunch you’re not going to want to pass up. We hope your next few weekends are filled with all the brunch goodness this city has to offer, as you make your way through some of our local favorites around town.

Happy brunch’n!

N O N P R O F I T S P OT L I G H T:

Oklahoma Lawyers for Children, Inc. (OLFC) is a grassroots nonprofit founded in Oklahoma City that is dedicated to serving abused and neglected children in Oklahoma County. That OLFC is truly a nonprofit, meaning that it is not supported by tax dollars nor does it receive reimbursement for services by contracting with state or local agencies, is particularly noteworthy. On October 21, the organization will celebrate its 20th anniversary with its annual Venetian Ball and a celebrity roast of co-founders Don Nicholson and D. Kent Meyers by Roast Masters Mayor Mick Cornett, Mike Turpen and Andy Coats, and others, making this an event to remember. If you are not familiar with OLFC, let us share just a bit, but we encourage you to learn more on your own. OLFC is an organization of volunteer attorneys and citizens committed to providing outstanding legal representation for abused and neglected children who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in DHS protective custody (foster care). Oklahoma law mandates that each one of these children have an attorney to represent them throughout their time in foster care. OLFC provides those attorneys and also provides children and families with a vast array of services, including preparing guardianships, adoptions, educational assistance, mentoring youth aging out of the foster care system, and more. In June, during National Reunification of Families Month, OLFC held its second annual Celebrating Families 5k run/walk, which included reunified families, new adopted families, foster families, grandparents raising children, social workers and the entire village of community partners that work together to serve this population.

When a Golden Retriever and a Cocker Spaniel mix, you get a “forever puppy”! This cutie is smaller in size than a normal retriever and takes on characteristics of both breeds, so it looks like a puppy for much of its life! They’re extremely loving, gentle, playful and intelligent pups, making them great with families. They’re easily trainable and are known to listen to commands and obey. They do require some fitness every now and then, so a trip to a local dog park is always a great idea! 46

EATS From the founder of the original Shack Seafood comes Brent’s Cajun, located in Edmond. Brent Hickman, owner and executive chef, has been in the restaurant business for pretty much his entire life. He’s originally from Louisiana, and the restaurant business runs in the family, so you know you’re getting nothing less than authentic Cajun food. The décor and friendly staff at Brent’s Cajun will make you feel like you’re right on the bayou. The menu has a little bit of everything from the Cajun cuisine: you’ll find favorites like po’boys, gumbos, seafood, pastas and more. Each item is made fresh to order, so you can’t go wrong. We actually recommend ordering something different every time you stop by – you’ll be glad you did as you work your way through the extensive menu. Each dish we tasted was packed full of flavor and had the perfect amount of heat. You can taste the freshness and the quality, which is extremely important! In fact, the Oysters Brent, piled-high grilled oysters, is listed as one of the 365 best things to do in Oklahoma! We have to take a minute to praise the homemade desserts for a second – they were mind-blowingly good. Next time we might just have to order dessert first. Don’t judge us until you try them for yourself. In all seriousness, every single thing was amazing and unlike anything else you’ll find in the city. You’re not going to want to miss out on this tasty cuisine and unique experience, trust us. If you already frequent Brent’s Cajun, Chef Brent recently added some new traditional Cajun dishes that you must try. We also can’t leave out their amazing brunch served Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with spins on classics like Cajun-Style Biscuits and Gravy and Crab Cakes Egg Benedict. Lastly, with the beautiful Oklahoma fall weather rolling in, you’ll want to take full advantage of their patio and TVs galore for all things sports. Brent’s Cajun really has it all and we truly love it. We have a feeling you will, too.

Their drinks are unbelievably good, but you’re not going to want to miss out on the Babble Waffle, a bubbleshaped waffle filled with ice cream and covered in delicious toppings like cereals, chocolate, fresh fruit and more. The kiddos will love it, and so will you. There is a little something for everyone here. Whether it’s a sweet treat, a date night, a study session or a routine morning coffee, we have a feeling Babble & Sip will win you over.

we’re a little obsessed, thanks to Nashbird. This trendy spot in popular Automobile Alley is serving up spicy and delicious chicken in incredible ways. If heat isn’t your thing, don’t worry – they have multiple levels, from no heat at all to the spicy “hot dang!” and “crazy hot.” Whether you choose a basket, a sandwich or a biscuit, it’s all so good. While the chicken is the star of the show, you can’t miss out on their sides: watermelon cucumber salad, mac and cheese, onion rings and more. Feed everyone during your next football get-together with their hot chicken buckets! You’ll love it all, from the food and drinks to the atmosphere. It’s some hot dang good chicken!

Family-run Panang Thai Restaurant offers authentic Thai cooking. The family opened their first restaurant in 2007 and it has continued to grow. They offer the finest-quality Thai soups, curries, stir fries, salads, noodle and rice dishes and more. Panang has a great range of vegetarian options and they can make most dishes at a custom spice level from very mild to very hot, according to your preference. If Thai food is something you’ve been hesitant to try, don’t wait any longer – let Panang ease your worries. Trust us, once you try it once, you’ll keep going back. Another plus: Panang is extremely well priced, with many options for $10 or less. Have an event coming up? They also cater! With multiple locations across the metro, Panang is convenient and extra delicious.

steakhouse with a focus on culinary greatness and innovation. You’ll find novelties like 70-day dry-aged New Zealand grassfed ribeye, truffle Parmesan pomme frites, popovers, smoked bone marrow persillade, and more. They offer many local options, like Iron Horse Ranch beef from Macomb, Oklahoma! They’re not open for lunch, so you’ll have to enjoy their yummy creations at dinner and later. Obviously the beef is a focus feature, but we recommend giving their hand-crafted cocktails a try. They are all unique and extremely delicious – you won’t want to miss out. St. Mark’s is the perfect place for a delectable dinner just because, or for that special occasion.

LET'S DO GREEK

The Aguilar family has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years, bringing their expertise in Greek and Mediterranean foods to you! Their awardwinning restaurant has always been a hit, and it eventually grew wheels to become the Let’s Do Greek food truck! What started out as just a fun idea – a truck to use on the weekends – took off full steam ahead and has quickly become a local favorite, offering the freshest and tastiest Greek food around town. Their following is loyal and it’s no surprise why – it’s delicious! This family is putting their heart and soul into each dish. It’s their true passion and it shows. On the truck, you’ll find classics like gyros, hummus and hot pita, and baklava, as well as creative creations like their gyro bowls, which are served on a bed of basmati rice and hot pita, topped with a selection of veggies, feta, tzatziki sauce (theirs is the absolute best, FYI!) and more. You can’t go wrong with any choice on the menu, and we have a feeling if you’re aren’t already a loyal follower you will be very soon. The Aguilar family stays busy with running the restaurant and food trucks and catering. If you can’t find the food truck (odds are that won’t happen often) or if it just isn’t near you, you can visit their permanent brick-andmortar store on the northwest side of town for dinner. Although it serves some of the same items, the restaurant has a different menu than the truck, and you can order options like arepas (stuffed Venezuelan cornmeal bread), salatas, meat combination plates and more. If you have an event coming up, you’ll be the hero for ordering Let’s Do Greek. Also, gluten-free and vegetarian friends, there are plenty of diet-friendly options for you to choose from – yay! Let’s Do Greek has a little something for everyone. Each dish is authentic yet original. We can’t say enough good things about this truck and their food. Next time you’re questioning what you should eat, it’s settled – Let’s Do Greek!
