L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F

Well hello there! How are we already in September? This year is cruising along quite quickly, and it doesn’t look like there are any signs of it slowing down. Secretly (well, I guess, not so secretly now), I’m pretty excited we’re in September! Football, Thunder season is just over the horizon, everything fall is approaching (yes, I’m a typical girl about fall), the holidays are upon us. And it brings us to our coveted fall fashion issue! This issue is always a fun one to put together, for many reasons. This month we partnered with EMBARK, the local bus system, to create a very urban and fashion-filled photo shoot. EMBARK couldn’t have been more helpful. They catered to our needs, and the buses are genuinely fun to be on! Having lived in New York City for a while, I am all too familiar with public transit, but after riding on EMBARK for the afternoon with our crew and lovely models, my expectations about public transportation have been forever changed. P.S.: The downtown and Bricktown route is FREE. How cool is that? Discover downtown with EMBARK.

Also, since Jack got to introduce it last month (and rightfully so), I personally would love to welcome you to the new, improved and face-lifted So6ix! I am so proud of our magazine, both of where we have come from and the direction we are headed in. We work tirelessly every month, putting in long days, to bring you the best product possible, and I’ve never been more proud of what we have created! This is such a fun issue, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Thank you for picking us up! Do what you can, with what you have, and be the difference.

Lauren Wright

This month we were honored to visit the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to see the extraordinary things they are doing. September is Hunger Action Month. One in four children and one in six adults in Oklahoma struggle with hunger. Many of us, including myself, are extremely blessed, and food is never a worry or burden, but to thousands living in Oklahoma this is not the case. There are so many ways we can do more to make a difference in these people’s lives. Be sure to visit regionalfoodbank.org to see all of the ways you can help.

You are in on the trends and you don’t care who knows it. Maybe not the girliest of girly trends, but you know what to wear and how to wear it. The blacker the outfit the better. Comfort plays into your life a little bit, whether it be for an outfit or for your social comfort zone. We’ll find you at all the hottest concerts in town with the big names, but you also don’t mind grabbing a drink and watching your local guitarist get down in a dive spot on a Thursday night. Cold isn’t your friend, or is it? Either way, your feet are warm and you’re stylin’.

Get it girlfriend! Your middle name is Sassy with a capital S.

so6ix.com | SEPTEMBER 2015

You’re typically the one in charge, and you’re going to look good while doing it. You’re up to date on the celebrity gossip and you don’t mind being one (a celebrity) yourself. You know how to have a good time. It’s a great thing to know who you are and what you want, but be sure to use manners along the way. You’ve got your head held high as you strut your stuff, and we dig it.

COLD FEET? Cold feet = unhappy me.

HOW TRENDY ARE YOU? It’s maybe not my main priority, but i keep up.

Who cares as long as I look hot.

WHO’S YOUR BOSS? I am my own!

You rock to the beat of your own drum. Comfort over style any day. You love to get in a good workout no matter the time of day, even if it interferes with happy hour with the gal pals. You often find yourself with more guy friends than girls. Don’t ignore a true and good gal pal when you find one; they can be hard to come by. You love a good challenge and nothing’s going to stop you once you have your mind set.

The taller the heel, the closer to heaven … as long as it’s comfortable. Wedges are kind of like a bike with training wheels, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! You’re conscious of your body, but it’s not your main focus 24/7. People’s opinions are important to you, but you’re not dwelling on them all day long. Wear those five-inch comfies like you own the runway.

You’re a sweetheart and you know it. Everyone just wants to give you a hug. You’re sugar, spice and everything nice. Can you ever really have enough pastels? Comfy is the way to go. Who wants to be four inches taller anyways? You’re the trendy Instagram queen and we’re jealous. The perfect lighting is your heaven. Keeping it grounded and changing the world, one ballet flat at a time. so6ix.com | SEPTEMBER 2015

DOT Therapy is setting a new standard for skin rejuvenation in fractional laser skin resurfacing. Its benefits are numerous, including minimizing wrinkles, softening skin texture, improving skin firmness, and reducing hyperpigmentation and facial scars. We do this treatment once a month in our office, and you can expect 5-7 days of downtime.

BOTOX Easily the most popular treatment for both men and women, Botox is the fastest way to get rid of the wrinkles and fine lines of your frown, forehead or crow’s feet. It’s super effective, has no downtime and works within 3-4 days on average.

2

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Nobody likes shaving, and our laser is the ideal way to quickly and safely remove all that unwanted hair. We can perform this treatment on virtually any part of the body! It saves time and money and gives you a newfound confidence. (Hint: this works best on patients with dark hair.)

3

FACIAL FILLERS Fillers can restore lost volume in the cheeks, temples and lines around the mouth, and be used for lip augmentation. We will carefully choose the filler that best fits your desired look and need. Fillers have little or no downtime.

4

5

7

ULTHERAPY SKIN TIGHTENING Ultherapy is the only noninvasive procedure approved by the FDA for lifting the skin on the chest, neck, chin and brow. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound to lift and tighten loose skin over time. There is no downtime, so you can get back to your day-to-day activities quickly! This treatment lasts about two years.

MICRO NEEDLING

This procedure can be used on the face as well as other parts of the body, and it helps all types of texture issues, especially acne scarring. We use a special stem cell formulation during your procedure to enhance repair of damaged cells and improve collagen thickening. This procedure takes an hour or less in most cases and has no significant downtime. Most patient do 3-4 treatments.

8

CHEMICAL PEELS Peels are very helpful to get rid of dull skin, reduce pore size, improve texture, reduce freckles, sun damage, and other types of pigmentation, and brighten your overall complexion. We carry several levels of chemical peels, depending on how light or aggressive you want your treatment to be. These are a great complement to microdermabrasion.

COOLSCULPTING

Say goodbye to stubborn fat. Say hello to the body you once had, with our clinically proven, FDA-cleared, totally nonsurgical treatment for fat reduction without the downtime. Coolsculpting freezes the fat cells and your body disposes of them naturally. Most patient have two treatments on the same area about 30 days apart. You can expect roughly a 20% reduction of fat volume with each treatment.

LASER SKIN RESURFACING

9

MICRODERMABRASION

This is the ultimate pampering treatment! Many believe microdermabrasion hurts, but on the contrary, it’s better than a simple facial: you get a relaxing treatment that includes steam, massage and professional product use. You also get the main benefit of microdermabrasion, which is less dead and dull skin sitting on the surface of your face. Patients love the way their skin feels when they leave the office! You can also do microdermabrasion on your back, if you are prone to breakouts.

10

PHOTOFACIAL (IPL) As we get older, our skin starts showing all the long days spent out in the sun with freckles, sun spots and redness. Photofacials can get rid of discoloration in only a few treatments, and they also treat large pores, red broken capillaries, and melasma. The ideal time for this treatment is the fall and winter, when you have no tan.

PUPPY OF THE MONTH KEESHOND I mean seriously, come on! Look at it! This breed is just the cutest ball of fluff. They are also all-around great dogs. They’re affectionate, good-natured companions, they have very outgoing and friendly personalities, and most importantly, they get along great with people and other dogs. It doesn’t stop there: these pups are smarties, so they can be easily trained. Keep in mind that unless you live in a cool-temperature spot, these thick-coated dogs aren’t suited for spending the summers outdoors. We just want to squeeze one! 28

“FIGHTING HUNGER... FEEDING HOPE”

MEET OUR HEROES OF THE MONTH, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma!

The Regional Food Bank is the largest private hunger-relief charity in the state, providing enough food to feed more than 110,000 hungry Oklahomans every WEEK! Sadly, the reality is that one in four children and one in six adults are never quite sure where their next meal will come from or if there will even be a next meal, making hunger a continuous struggle. It’s a very real crisis that many deal with on a daily basis. Hunger does not discriminate; it affects people in all walks of life in all kinds of different situations. How often do you really think about the change jingling in your pocket or accumulating in your cup holder? Did you know that for every $1 donated, the Regional Food Bank provides FIVE meals to hungry Oklahomans? In 2014 alone, the Regional Food Bank distributed 47.8 million pounds of food throughout Oklahoma. More than 96 cents of every dollar donated to The Regional Food Bank goes directly to hunger relief. That’s huge compared to some major nonprofits! The Regional Food Bank is an angel on earth to hungry children. Its Backpack Program provides chronically hungry children with nonperishable food to take home over the weekend, where they will be without school-funded meals. The Summer Feeding Program distributed enough food to provide more than 160,000 meals to 4,714 children over the summer, when food can be very sparse. The Regional Food Bank serves our community with these and countless other programs. It takes more than just food to make a difference, but selfless employees, volunteers, donors and advocates. These gracious people give their time, HAVE YOU BEEN LOOKING money, energy and skills to give back to those who are truly in TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE need. You have not truly lived until you have done something for IN YOUR COMMUNITY? someone who cannot repay you.

The Regional Food Bank is always looking for smiling volunteers, monetary donors, food and product donors, hunger advocates and more.

Coincidentally, September is Hunger Action Month, and we are encouraging all Oklahomans to join the fight against hunger. You can check out the various events happening across the state throughout the month of September to help raise awareness and funds to help fight hunger at regionalfoodbank.org.

The drinks are fun, and the Cajun twist on a classic Bloody Mary just screams southern. Pair it with a brunch item and we’ve just about gone to heaven. Oh, did we mention that? The Shack does brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s such a tasty way to switch up your typical brunches. You can try options like a Cajun omelette or Cajun-style biscuits and gravy. YUM! Count us in. The number one thing I loved about this food is that it was full of flavor. You can taste the fresh seafood flavor, the spiciness of the Cajun seasoning, and every other spice that is packed into each dish. From the main dish down to even the simple white rice, it’s all delicious. P.S.: We’d like to go for a swim in the mudslide cake, please (it’s that good).

After nearly a decade, this longtime favorite has reopened to serve you many of the classics that made the original Tommy’s a landmark. Although they’re serving up old favorites, they have plenty of new and innovative menu items that are packed full of flavor. We love the upscale environment, yet it’s still casual, not stuffy. You get the best feeling when you see the wood-fired brick pizza oven in the middle of the restaurant, because you know you’re about to have some real-deal Italian food. We recommend you start off with the crab cakes, and don’t pass up the Tommy’s Caesar salad. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes, but we love the Bianco Verde, Tommy’s Original Lasagna, and any of the brick oven pizzas, just to name a few. During the warmer months, enjoy a tasty cocktail atop the second-story patio, equipped with umbrella tables, cute string lights, and a great view.

As some of the world’s biggest sandwich fans, just the name gets us excited! The Sandwich Club is one of the newest members of the restaurant scene, opened up by two former techies who made their way in Silicon Valley. These buds wanted to set their own schedules and follow their dream to open a sandwich shop, and what better place to do this than in Oklahoma City! This quaint spot is serving up some interesting combos that are oh-so-tasty, to say the least. Here are a few of the crazy combos we think are great: “Sweep the Leg”: chicken, bacon, pepper jack, cream cheese, sprouts, jalapeño chips and honey mustard. “Snake Plissken”: turkey, chicken, bacon, pepper jack, cream cheese, jalapeños, red bell pepper, hot sauce and chipotle gourmaise. “Omega Mu”: roast beef, bacon, cheddar, horseradish sauce and Sriracha. Another plus: this spot serves up Big Sky Bread, a local favorite!

HURTS DONUT COMPANY

CLASSEN GRILL

746 Asp Ave., Norman, OK 73069 417.300.6106

5124 Classen Dr., OKC, OK 73118 405.842.0428

We know what you’re thinking: it’s just another typical donut shop. WRONG. 1. You can get your donut fix any time of any day, because they’re open 24 hours. 2. This spot is home to some crazy combinations that we have never seen before. Hurts’s first location was in Springfield, Missouri, but we sure are thankful they decided to bring their delicious donuts to Norman, Oklahoma! Grab a seat inside and enjoy the crazy creations, or relax on the couch while you study or even outside on the patio under an umbrella. Some of their most popular donuts come from their “Cereal Killer” line, made from some of the most popular cereals, like Froot Loops, Cap’n Crunch, Cocoa Puffs and more. We think it’s a MUST that you try the S’more Donut when available. (If you don’t know by now, we are the world’s biggest s’more lovers.) One of their newest creations is the Nutty Professor: white cake donut with chocolate icing, Nutter Butters and a peanut butter drizzle. YUM!

Over the last three decades, this spot has become like a second home to many. Classen Grill offers delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch options, some with a Mexican flair. If you’re stopping in, don’t forget to have a glass of their fresh-squeezed orange juice. They have just about any breakfast creation you can come up with, and if they don’t have it, you can create your own custom omelettes, side add-ons and more. Classen Grill has traditional options like eggs Benedict, hash browns, eggs and toast, but if you’re feeling a little creative try something like the Memphis French Toast: two pieces of white bread stuffed with bananas, peanut butter and honey, then dipped in cinnamon batter and served with bacon, their Colorado burrito or biscuit debris. Don’t be alarmed if you have to wait a little while. This spot is particularly popular with longtime locals, but it’s worth the wait!
