L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F

September is now here and I couldn’t be more excited. As much as I love the summer and all the fun that comes with it, fall is always filled with so many wonderful things and makes for a nice change. Take a big breath and say it with me now – FOOTBALL IS BACK! We are already beginning to feel that cool breeze in the air that signifies the football season is here. I’m convinced that football is part of the Okie DNA. Oklahoma always has phenomenal college football powerhouses in our state, and with that comes so much anticipation for success. Norman will be buzzing this month with a new expansion to Gaylord Stadium that rivals any stadium in the country, and I can’t wait to see it rocking when Ohio State comes to town! The Pokes look to be very strong this year, and the long-awaited appearance of Cowboys legend Barry Sanders’s son will have our attention. I couldn't be more excited for this season, and I know that goes for many of you Okies out there too. It’s also time for funnel cakes, corn dogs as long as your arm and fried everything. Our great State Fair is back. On top of all the great food, carnival rides and games to play, there is an awesome lineup of concerts this year. Eli Young Band is one of my absolute favorite

Red Dirt bands that you have to see at the Fair. Every day there will be free concerts at the Adventure Road Entertainment Stage, and I’m already picking a few that I don’t want to miss. September is an awesome month, and we have a great issue for you. This is our annual Fall Fashion Issue, and this year is all about denim. All the best boutiques in the city show off the latest street-style denim trends, from pants and shirts to jackets and jumpsuits. This issue is packed with great things about the State Fair and the Plaza District Festival, a preview of the new restaurant concept The Hutch on Avondale, and a peek at 21C’s fantastic restaurant, Mary Eddy’s. We had a lot of fun working hard to put this issue together for you this month, and we hope you enjoy it. See you at the State Fair!

NW 16TH STREET

The booming and vibrant Plaza District is hosting its 18th annual Plaza District Festival on Saturday, September 24 from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Located on 16th between Indiana and Blackwelder, this creative district, with its ever-growing selection of restaurants, shops and galleries, has become popular with locals and tourists alike. The festival is free and open to the public. You’ll find many different events and activities, everything from all-Okie musicians and performers to art-related activities, a kids’ zone, nine popular local food trucks, and booths with 30+ Oklahoma-based visual artists. It’s going to be a great Saturday to come out and support everything local in the heart of our great city, the Plaza District.

With more than 90 submissions, it was a difficult task for the Plaza District to only choose 35 local artists to show off what they do and make. This year features a combination of both new and returning Oklahoma artists. You’ll find a variety of media: paintings and photography, woodwork and stained glass, children’s books, jewelry, T-shirts, purses, designer dog treats and so much more.

EATS

In addition to the already great food options in the Plaza, like Empire Slice and Roxy’s Ice Cream, the festival will be stacked with nine delicious local food trucks to keep festivalgoers’ bellies happy. You’ll find BBQ, donuts, shaved ice, vegan options, and Jerkey, just to name a few.

PLAZA WALLS MURAL EXPO

Local public art is taking the city by storm and we are loving it. In our August issue, we highlighted the Plaza Walls and many of the wonderful murals that turned this dark alleyway into a colorful public art gallery. It’s getting a makeover during this one-of-a-kind event, which will debut 20 new murals by 20 artists. These spray-paint enthusiasts will begin painting the Plaza Walls the week of September 18 and will debut 5,200 square feet of brand-new murals on Saturday, September 24, during the Plaza District Festival. In addition, the infamous Indiana wall will get its September makeover by Jason Pawley from September 9-24. Festival attendees will be able to watch Pawley live-paint this mural’s final touches.

The Finnish Lapphund was not recognized by the American Kennel Club until 2011, making it one of the newer labeled breeds. Although these pups may be reserved with strangers at first, they are intelligent, alert and eager to learn. They’re typically calm, friendly and submissive at home and with their owners. They have great energy without being hyper.

Coming Soon

Formerly known as The Coach House, the long-standing landmark on Avondale is getting a gorgeous overhaul into what is now The Hutch on Avondale. The Hutch is headed by Chef David Henry, previous head chef at The Coach House, and Kyle Fleischfresser, and their goal is to open around Labor Day. If you frequented The Coach House or stopped in for special occasions you may recall the darker concept, with a lot of rich wood and elegant seating, and the tasty food creations. The Hutch is keeping the tasty food but they have completely gutted the insides to showcase a more modern and open look. One of our favorite new features is a Chef’s Bar, where you can reserve a premier spot on a barstool in front of the open window of the kitchen and enjoy a tasting menu prepared by the head chef. The Chef’s Bar will be available once the restaurant gets settled in. With beautiful new décor comes a new menu: modern food with a spin on Okie favorites. Every single thing, down to the condiments, is completely house-made. They plan to source everything local where possible – that’s reason number 57 why we already love The Hutch. Your meal can be as quick or for as long as you’d prefer. You can have multiple courses served for a more formal setting, or you can stop in for a quick bar snack and drink after work. Shed the suit and tie (unless that’s your thing) and unwind at The Hutch. We have a feeling this spot will be the new Nichols Hills hangout. Not only is the food going to be top-notch, but so will the cocktails. Kyle Fleischfresser is known for many great things in the food world, and crafting cocktails is definitely one of them. He’s researched all over the world and will be serving the best concoctions at The Hutch. The bar will also come with a well-curated wine and spirits list that will pair well with any occasion. You will see some familiar faces on the staff that you grew to love at The Coach House, but there will be plenty new friendly faces to get to know as well. The heart of The Coach House will still be in the Hutch. We already love this concept and can’t wait to see it take Nichols Hills by storm. If you want to know where to find us this fall, it will be at The Hutch on Avondale.

They plan to source everything local where possible – that’s reason number 57 why we already love The Hutch.

STREET OF DREAMS 2016

Avalon Custom Homes www.avalon-home.com

Willco Homes www.willcohomes.com

F

O

Avalon Custom Homes is a premier custom home builder in the OKC and Choctaw areas. They’re different than your average builder, offering hidden storm shelters and panic rooms, full foam insulation and tankless hot water systems. Since 2001, Avalon has built beautiful custom homes that truly meet the desires and dreams of their clients.

Owned by Sheryl Willingham, Willco Homes is built on the foundation of unparalleled quality craftsmanship and personalized attention to detail. They work hand-in-hand with every customer to build not just a residence, but a home that reflects their tastes and individual personalities. This personalized service coupled with exceptional quality assures the delivery of a distinctive, tailored home.

1. Do you have a building style? If so, how would you briefly describe it? Our building style is traditional custom homes. However, every house is different depending on the client and the design elements they would like to incorporate into their home and living space.

1. Do you have a building style? If so, how would you briefly describe it? Our building style is as individualized as each of our customers. Whether our budget is small or large, we strive to give our customers a home of their vision, unique style and discerning taste. When we design a home, my focus is always centered around not only the beauty of the home but functionality and storage as well. We focus on the smallest details to make sure their new home is as unique and special as our customers are.

O R

2. We can't wait to see your Street of Dreams custom home! If you can give us one little sneak peek, what would it be? As part of a grand front entryway, our Street of Dreams home will have the first residential elevator of this kind in the state of Oklahoma. Definitely a must-see feature! 3. What's your favorite thing about being a home builder? We enjoy having satisfied customers and seeing the finished product! We take something from nothing and make it beautiful. Seeing the process from start to finish is one of our favorite things about being a home builder.

P

4. If you can pick one, what is your favorite design trend right now? We currently enjoy working with Transitional Mediterranean design trends.

5. What is your best advice to readers when it comes to custom home building/design? We suggest interviewing a number of builders to find the right fit. When you find the one who fits and someone you can trust, stop interviewing and enjoy the process!

6. What's it like to be a part of Street of Dreams? What are you most excited for with Street of Dreams? This has been an incredible journey and we can’t wait to see it all come together in October. We are extremely excited to display the quality of our work and craftsmanship to all who attend the event, so get your ticket today. You don’t want to miss out!

2. We can't wait to see your Street of Dreams custom home! If you can give us one little sneak peek, what would it be? Our home is a very open concept, which is perfect for entertaining. It features a must-have master wing, a gorgeous kitchen with an incredible walk-through pantry, spacious bedrooms, a game room/ media room that all of your friends will envy, and the outdoor living space of your dreams, which includes a beautiful lap pool, screened porch, and a wonderful surprise you won't want to miss! 3. What's your favorite thing about being a home builder? We love to develop personal relationships with our customers and walk with them as they make their dreams a reality. 4. If you can pick one, what is your favorite design trend right now? My favorite design trend right now would be the cleaner lines of transitional styling while adding “farmhouse” touches to make the home comfy and cozy for living life! Another design trend that I love is the growing desire for beautiful and practical outdoor living space. This space is becoming as important as the kitchen and I love being creative and functional in these areas as well. 5. What is your best advice to readers when it comes to custom home building/design? Take your time designing the plans of your dreams. Do not rush that process! Choose a reputable builder that is honest and trustworthy that you want to develop a relationship with over the months it will take to build your home. Communication is key! Don't forget to enjoy the experience along the way. Building is something you and your family should enjoy while making memories that last a lifetime. 6. What's it like to be a part of Street of Dreams? What are you most excited for with Street of Dreams? It is an honor and privilege to be a part of this event. I look forward to meeting new people and making new friends throughout this process. I love to be able to give back to my community and I am so pleased we are able to partner with COHBA and Edmond Public Schools to make even more dreams come true!

EATS What We Tasted TOOLBOX House-cured meats, cheese, house pickles, mustard, larded toast

Built from history and on its way to being historic in its own right, Mary Eddy’s and the 21C Museum Hotel is now a part of the growing Oklahoma City story. Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge sits in the bright, quirky and modern 21C Museum Hotel, which was previously a Ford Motor Company assembly plant. Mary Eddy’s is as spectacular as the hotel and art gallery itself. Its atmosphere doesn’t feel much like the typical Okie spot. Upon walking into the lounge and dining space you can feel its industrial roots, but it’s not a cold vibe. It’s the complete opposite: warm and inviting, with plush booth seats, communal tables with views into glass-front refrigerators, and even a chef’s bar, where you can see the action happening directly in front of you. We were greeted by Executive Chef Jason Campbell, who is unbelievably talented. His passion is evident, which enhanced our experience even further. Jason’s culinary background has been shaped by a variety of influences. He worked his way through several notable eateries before making his way to the great state of Oklahoma and becoming the mastermind and executive chef of Mary Eddy’s. He takes pride in this chef-driven restaurant and combines unexpected flavors, resulting in New American dishes that will truly blow your mind. You’ll find many of the menu items, both food and drink, are a play on words that relate back to the history of the Ford Motor Assembly Plant. Each dish that was served was almost too beautiful to eat, but not in the “what in the world are we eating?” kind of way, and each had the taste to back up the beauty. No dish tasted alike or lacked flavor in any way. Each recipe was filled with complexity and flavor combinations that kept us taking one bite after another. By the end, you could say we were stuffed. As amazing as the food and atmosphere were, we were equally impressed by the attention to detail as a whole. The menu, crafted by Chef Campbell, really took Oklahoma – and Oklahomans – into consideration. There’s a little something on there for just about everyone, but done in a way unlike you’ve ever seen or tasted before. From the growing to the cooking, Mary Eddy’s is extremely resourceful. They try to use as many local ingredients as they can (their list is long, believe us) and are responsible with ingredients, making many different components out of everything so nothing goes wasted. Chef Campbell and the team really take pride in the process. If there wasn’t enough to love about Mary Eddy’s so far, the design, art and cuisine of each 21C Hotel Restaurant is completely different. You are truly getting a one-of-a-kind experience at Mary Eddy’s that you won’t find anywhere else. The menu changes often. Chef Campbell ensures they don’t use any fruit or vegetable longer than it should be used and strives to make everything in season. So you may see certain menu items like the Toolbox change daily, or one component of a dish, like a sauce, change seasonally. Mary Eddy’s serves up breakfast and dinner daily and brunch on Saturday and Sunday, and will soon be serving lunch as well. We could write a book on all the ways this place is great: from the food, to the people, to the atmosphere, to how they use local ingredients, to their resourcefulness, and on and on. Have you ever felt inspired by a restaurant? Because that’s what Mary Eddy’s did to us. They’re a part of our community now and we couldn’t be happier. We can’t wait to visit again, and again and again. We hope you’ll join us.
