Letter from the editor The great 19th century American novelist Herman Melville wrote: “Life’s a voyage that’s homeward bound.” His metaphor aptly expresses a view of life that entails adventure and exploration and discovery, but ultimately finds fulfillment and contentment in one’s conception of “home.” The notion of home, for me, certainly encompasses much more than a physical space; it’s a metaphysical reality that includes an emotional and spiritual center. But the physical place is not without meaning. When I think back through my childhood to various homes I lived in, I often remember particular nuances, such as the angle of light slanting through a window or the color of paint in my living room or the crack in a wall that added to the idiosyncrasies of what I knew to be “home.” So while the locale and the particulars of bricks and wood and shingles is not ultimately where we should seek to find purpose, it certainly

There’s No Place Like Home

Almost all of us can recall Dorothy’s famous line from The Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” But can any of us recall what she was really longing for? Most of us would think of home as the place where we live such as: the house, estate, farm, physical structure, or landscape that is our place of residence, but is that really what is meant by “home?” If you remember the end of the movie, what Dorothy was really missing and longing for was her family and loved ones, not the farm or the house because in her mind all of that had been destroyed in the twister. To her, home was family and loved ones. So why do we call it “home?” We’ve all heard the saying: “A house is just a place where people live, but a home is truly where the heart is.” It may be a cliché, but I have to say I completely agree. After a long trip or long day, people want to come home. This doesn’t mean they want to go to the house; how

Thebigpicture

would that be any different than a bar, hotel, or someone else’s house? The difference is that a home is a place where your heart feels warm, safe, and inviting. A house cannot give us those feeling on its own, but the people and loved ones that are there can. Home doesn’t necessarily have to be your own house per se; it can be a family member’s house, your childhood house, your significant other’s house, or any other. What makes it “home” is the feeling your heart gets when you are there, a place of warmth, love, and acceptance. So how can you make your home a “Home?” The answer is simple: love one another. Show your family that home is a place where they can be open, honest, loved, and accepted. Show love to your spouse and to your children. Of course you should still discipline your children, but demonstrate love and warmth when you do, and let your family know that your home is not a place of fear, but rather of safety. Make it a point to be accepting and empathetic to the needs of your family so that they can feel at ease (particularly when they are struggling) to be open and honest within the family. A home should not be a place of judgment or punishment, but rather of teaching, growing, discipline, and gentle correction from love. Each individual member should feel safe about coming home and desire it when times are tough, not the opposite. “Home is where the heart is.” In conclusion, remember that just because your family has a place of residence, doesn’t make it home to everyone. It only becomes a home when the people inside it can feel loved, accepted, and safe when they are there and around the other members. Home warms the heart. It should be a place that when we feel like we are in a rut, we can say “There’s no place like home,” and feel comforted by the thought. That is truly where the heart is.

Mock MARK GILMORE... Photography/ArtBy:By:BethMARKAnnGILMORE

LIGHT, ATMOSPHERE, AND THE INEFFABLE: THE ART OF MARK GILMORE Mark Gilmore has been a fixture of the Oklahoma art scene for over thirty years. A proud provocateur, he creates the envelope out of thin air and then pushes it. Working with the Max Herschfeld Galleries in the 80’s and early 90’s, he helped spawn our city’s first all electronic/digital art openings and hosted the first of the erotic art shows in Oklahoma City. “It became a nationally recognized show with artists from around the country,” says Gilmore. “Because it was privately funded, we had fun being provocative. We are the ones who got picketed and raided by the police. I’m rather proud of that.” The erotic art show at Max Herschfeld Galleries ran for six years, long before the Biting The Apple erotic art show at the Individual Artists of Oklahoma, and he spent several years serving on the IAO’s board of directors. Mark spent a lot of time and energy working with the Classen Art Center, which maintained galleries, studios, and housed groups like the IAO, the Oklahoma Artist’s Guild, and the

Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. Mark has collaborated with fellow local artists George Oswalt, Rea Baldridge, and the much beloved late Claude Anderson. He has work in the permanent collection at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art in Shawnee. In 2003, he worked with Richard Ray Whitman developing digital images for Whitman’s exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Museum of the Native American in New York City. We at So6ix wanted to know what keeps Mark in Oklahoma. “My kids,” he smiles, “they were the most important things for me, and any choice I’ve made for them over art is a good decision. My adult children continue to be the best things I’ve ever made. Now I stay because I have so many friends, resources, and assets here. I like living here.” Mark has given private lessons to children in the Creative Communities Program and at the Art Center at the fairgrounds. “I love working with kids,” he says. “I like to show them that with ingenuity and imagination you can

take what you have and make what you want.” Mark is currently working on a series of donated canvasses. Taking what has already been painted as his first influence, he then creates over the existing artwork: “This throws a bit of randomness into the process that I like. I’m exploring the passage of time and fateful moments that change everything that follows. The layering of the previous works with the newer images is part of exploring that space between the past and present. I’m playing with the tension between the illusion of ‘realist’ painting and the literal presentation of non-objectivism.” Gilmore has done a great deal of collage work with photography software, but painting is his first and most enduring love. “My relationship with computers is changing,” he told me, “I’ve used them for about thirty years

and they have been my primary source of income through design work, but now I’m going back to using technology that is over four hundred years old, so the computer moves to being a peripheral tool.” Mark describes his work as primarily realistic with strong dream elements. He says his real challenge comes from painting the ‘invisible’. “I can’t just do it on the weekends and evenings,” he says of his artwork. “It consumes me. I have a long list of things I want to do. I’ll be interested in the public response when I start showing again at the end of this year.” “I’m obsessive, ADHD, and I wish I had a chance at being a Shriner,” he told me, “because I dig the hats and go-carts.” Find Mark on Facebook or contact him at Mark@DesignAnalytics.net to find out more about his work.

SweetWater...

And sweet tunes.

Local bands in today’s music industry seem to have the life cycle of a firework. Thousands are constantly appearing out of thin air with loud noise and a bright flash, but just as quickly as they made their presence, they disappear leaving a trail of smoke behind. With all of the competition, it is almost impossible for a group to set themselves apart and survive the ever changing scene. The SweetWater has made itself a notable exception to this theory. With a combination of a unique sound and the ability to create an electric atmosphere, this group has demanded respect and recognition. The SweetWater is truly an Oklahoma born and bred creation with Adam Banner as vocals and guitar, Zack Baker on bass and guitar, James Gilmartin on drums, and Richard Hunter tearing up the saxophone. The group has been together for two years and has impacted the music scene on a regional scale. I attended a show last month which enabled me to get the complete sound and feel that the guys have “live.” Edit-

ing and modern technology can make someone like me sound like Nicki Minaj, so I had to hear The SweetWater in person before throwing them a referral. If it is possible, Adam, Zack and Richard sounded better in person than on their demo. Everyone in the venue was obviously getting into their show. The guys were great about responding to the audience’s vibe by mixing in some appropriate covers with their original work. In an interview with the band following the show, they described their sound: “Imagine Bob Seger and the old Kings of

The Sweetwater currently has three EPs and is working in Audyssey Studio to finish their latest work. The new CD should be finished by the end of May, so follow the band online to get information on the release party. Their songs are available for download or purchase on Itunes, Myspace, Amazon MP3, Rhapsoday and almost any other outlet for music. After you take the time to check them out online, check out their future show dates to see them in person. You really will be impressed by the professional and distinctive sound, complimented by the exciting attitude of the entire show. Get pictures and autographs while they are free!

Historic Charm

By: Jacqueline Larocco Photography By: clifton roberts

Oklahoma city’s historic district When you think of downtown Oklahoma City living, what do you imagine? Some picture apartment buildings nestled in the middle of a quickly-growing city. Others may picture expensive lofts just outside the noise and craze of Bricktown. But you would be surprised at what downtown Oklahoma City has to offer for those looking for a more historical and peaceful charm. It’s no well-kept secret that Oklahoma City has a historic district. I’ve always heard about it. Crown Heights, Edgemere Park, Mesta Park, Heritage Hills; these are all names we hear, living in the metro area. But have you really taken a look at what these areas have to offer?

\ Crown Heights Did you know that the pineapple is symbolic of hospitality? Well, in the Crown Heights neighborhood, that is their motto. This classic neighborhood has been around since 1930, and they are still delivering great housing to Oklahomans. In the 30s, Oklahomans called the neighborhood “Pill Hill” due to the fact that so many doctors lived there at the time. The steep-pitched roofs and large chimneys are reminiscent of a colonial or Tudor theme, but don’t be quick to classify the homes in this neighborhood. There is a variety of color and design as you drive down the streets of Crown Heights.

18 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

Edgemere Park If Tudor Revival-styled living is what you’re looking for, perhaps Edgemere Park should be your first stop on your house hunt. The most beautiful aspect of the neighborhood is the central park and creek, which, in the summer, can be quite breathtaking. Edgemere Park dates back to the 20s, and was one of the first planned housing districts west of the Mississippi River. However, Edgemere Elementary School was established a decade before, in 1911. The land was dedicated to the school, and over the next several years, residents began to plan the housing area and park around it.

Mesta Park If Crown Heights and Edgemere Park aren’t “historic” enough for you, then Mesta Park could be old enough to satisfy that craving you have for extraordinary historic living. This neighborhood

So6ixMay2011

dates back to before Oklahoma was even a state—1902! The best part about Mesta Park (in my opinion) has got to be the trees. Mesta Park is overflowing with luscious, towering, colorful trees. Living in Oklahoma, it is rare to find a neighborhood community that isn’t dully flat and compulsively dotted with one-inch twigs in the front yard. Also, each house is so uniquely designed, so it is the perfect place if you’re tired of the cookie-cutter neighborhoods popping up all over the metro.

Heritage Hills Heritage Hills could only be classified as the underdog in the paradigm of historical neighborhoods. Its origins date back to 1903; however it wasn’t until the mid20s that the area truly became a neighborhood. But in the midst of a rising city and downtown area, Heritage Hills has had to fight for its right of preservation. Residents and families in the area fought against government legislation and construction in order to keep the peaceful charm of the neighborhood amidst the growing urban life surrounding it. Today, the residents of Heritage Hills still fight, but they are fortunate to live in such a nice, 100-year-old community and still be within reach of what modern life has to offer. Summer is fast approaching, which means the time to buy and sell houses starts now! The historic district may not be the first place that comes to mind when you hop in the car to go house searching, but it’s definitely worth taking a look at. You may just find your next beautiful dream home.

Sellers, and Lenders

Almost everyone I know has a dream of driving into the driveway of their new home for the first time and having the ability to take pride in something that is their own. But how would you get there if you don’t know what actions to take? What is that first step? First, you should begin by getting preapproved by a lender, unless you are paying cash. The pre-approval letter lets the seller know you are able to afford the price of the home. It is a good idea to talk with more than one lender so you can compare rates and lender fees. In today’s market, sellers take offers into consideration that have a pre-approval letter attached. In the past, sellers were willing to consider an offer without the letter because financing was less likely to fall through. With the current economy, you rarely find sellers who are willing to risk accepting a contract without a pre-approval letter. If you have given the lender all the information they need, it should not take more than a day or two to get preapproved. If it takes much longer for the pre-approval letter, you might want to consider speaking with other lenders. The reason why you should think twice about using that particular lender is if it takes longer than it should to get pre-

20 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

approved by the lender, it could take longer than it should for the loan application to go through. If that happens, what happens to the closing date? It can get pushed back, and all your plans of moving are on hold. It is best not to risk it. Once you found the home you want to purchase and put it under contract, lenders also provide a Good Faith Estimate (GFE). The GFE is a legally binding document showing an estimate of what your costs will be at closing. New changes to the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) statute came into effect January 1, 2010, stating the GFE must be within a 10% range of the costs noted on the HUD form you receive prior to closing. Lenders will take a little bit more time preparing a Good Faith Estimate because they are legal documents and the lender is legally bound. For more information you can go to: http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/ramh/ res/respa_hm.cfm Once you are pre-approved, you can continue the process of buying the home! The Crump effect

By: Bryan crump

Location, Perspective, and Opportunity taurants are nearby? 6. Are there any landmarks, advertisements, businesses, landscapes or scenery that can inspire me during my travels to and from work? Is there anything during my travels that may upset or depress me, and if so, should I make another choice before I commit to this one? 7. Can I afford the asking price? Is it worth the asking price? 8. What kinds of sounds are there at night? Is there a railroad or airport nearby? How loud are the neighbors?

Location is good for many things and not just for having a home or primary location for business. Your environment can have a lot of influence on your happiness and productivity. If you live in a place or neighborhood that is dirty, full of decaying houses, and the roads are in poor condition, how do you think you would feel? Think about your drive to and from some of your regular visits during the week and weekends. Where will you be driving through? There are a lot of things to consider when buying a house, and cost is just one. Quality is another thing you will want to consider. Here are some questions to consider when buying a house or finding a business space: 1. How far will I have to drive every day for my usual travels to and from home or work?

9. What kind of experience does the realtor have? What is the projected future value of the purchase I am considering? (A good agent can give you a history of the real estate, its former values, and projected growth or decline.) 10. Are there any questions I can ask that can help me to make a wise decision in my purchase? 11. If I live here, how will it affect my perspective on my community, my neighborhood, and my work? 12. What things should I take into consideration for this purchase? 13. How do the seasons and weather affect the surrounding area? Can I overcome those challenges easier here than somewhere else?

2. What kind of neighborhood is it in? 3. What is the community like? 4. How far away are the schools, community centers, parks, and other recreational areas? 5. What resources, businesses, and res-

The above are just a few questions and thoughts that you should consider when you are looking for a home. Remember that location, perspective, and environment can have a huge impact on your happiness, your productivity, and your health. If you have a toxic environment, you could find your health declining, your inspiration lacking, and your esteem wavering. Make sure that in any choice that you make regarding a real estate purchase that you consult with professionals for advice, maintenance, taxes, inspection and other areas. Take time to consider your purchase and know what you are getting into. If you are lucky, you might be able to do a stay-over at night to see what the place sounds like during the dark hours. I have an advantage over others because my uncle runs a real estate school here in Moore, so I can ask him and the teachers there for advice when I need it, but they are quick to help others too. What resources are available to you that can help you make wiser and more intelligent decisions? Any time you make a significant purchase you should not rush into it, or you could find yourself in a world of hurt and challenges later on. Doing your research and taking your time to make a decision can help with your self-esteem, comfort, and assurance.

Any home you live in should be one that you are comfortable in and can help you to live a happy, productive, and inspired life. It should be a place where you can get adequate rest and where you can relax without being interrupted. Proper rest and relaxation allow us to recharge and come back to all of our work with renewed energy and dedication.

Quick Fixes...

Fast sells. Tips on making the most profit on your property Getting a home ready to sell is a lot of work, but it is one that pays off both in the price at which it sells and the amount of time it takes to sell. The good news is that you can do a lot of it yourself saving you money. If you are nervous about how to do things, there are a number of DIY videos and websites online. Plus, stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot are always glad to help. You have to understand that your home is on the market competing with other homes at the same price. Your house needs to stands out among the pack. Remember, you’re trying to get people to choose your home for the biggest investment of their lives. They have to be able to picture their lives in that home, and at the same time have confidence in how the home was taken care of before they purchased it.

Let’s start with the exterior. It’s all about curb appeal here. This is your only shot at a first impression. You wouldn’t go to a job interview without showering, shaving, and putting on your best suit.

Thebigpicture

So don’t expect to be able to sell your home for what you think it’s worth without a good first impression. Water, mow, and edge the grass. Rake the leaves and trim the bushes. One might think these are obvious things to do, but you’d be shocked how many people won’t water or edge their lawn when they’re trying to sell it because they don’t want to waste money on their water bill. They want to sell a six-figure home but won’t spend thirty extra bucks a month to make the grass green. If you don’t have an edger, a neighbor or a friend probably does. Borrow it for the afternoon. It will make your lawn look like it’s been taken care of by a pro.

Plant shrubs and flowers and add mulch. You don’t have to buy the most expensive flowers or plants on the market, though. Almost any decent looking plants will do. If you don’t want to spend too much money here then adding a potted flower next to the front door can add some real life and color to the outside of the house. Also, removing weeds and grass from the flowerbed is something you can do for free but goes a long way to help with this first impression. You may also choose to touch up exterior paint. If the paint is peeling on the outside, particularly when it’s visible from the curb (like the garage door or front door), you should probably touch it up or repaint the outside. On the inside it’s all about making Continued on page 26

Continued from page 25, Quick Fixes, fast sells the buyer comfortable and help them picture their lives in the home. The most important thing you can do is clean, clean, clean. Vacuuming is not enough. The house needs to sparkle top to bottom in every room. You need to deep clean the counters, sinks, ledges, windows, and toilets. But there are a lot of places people forget, like showers— it’s not enough to shut the shower curtain. No one pictures themselves showering in a moldy, dirty shower. Repair or replace leaky shower heads and faucets. Another commonly forgotten place is the oven. You’d be surprised how many buyers open the oven door and peek inside.

A fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference especially if the walls are a dark or bold color. You may love the color of your walls, but you aren’t buying the home. A neutral, earthy tone is going to be appealing to more buyers. They call it “builder beige” for a reason. Because builders, who sell houses for a living, have discovered that it’s their best bet when it comes to paint color. Be sure, however, to do a professional quality job. Don’t get sloppy and let paint get all over the trim. Update the home’s hardware. Install new faucets, light switch covers, and cabinet knobs. If you can’t afford to do

26 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

this throughout the home then concentrate your efforts by only doing it in the kitchen and/or the master bathroom. Clear out the clutter. Find a drawer for all your mail, magazines, and keys. You want your counters to be clear to create open space. If you have too much furniture, rent a storage unit to store some of it. The buyer can’t picture their things in the home if the house is filled with your stuff.

These are all inexpensive things you can do to put a fresh touch on your home that can really increase its value. Keep in mind that more expensive improvements may be needed depending on the age and value of the home in order to be more competitive. This could include replacing carpet, replacing the appliances, adding gutters, adding blinds, or a number of other things. Consulting with a Realtor can answer many of these questions, but hopefully you’ve learned that there are a number of things that you can do yourself to help your home sell faster for the most money possible. Downtown OKC

By: Beth Ann Mock Photography By: clifton roberts

Making Yourself at Home Downtown Oklahoma City is growing up, going through a beautiful urban renewal, and sporting incredible apartment housing minutes away from the Ford Center, Bricktown, the Farmer’s Market, revamped historic Film Row, and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

The Montgomery 500 W. Main The Mont, as it’s known, has adorned Oklahoma City since her first heyday when it was the crown jewel of downtown, the Montgomery Ward department store building. Right in the middle of the Arts District, the Montgomery has a loft layout with 14-foot ceilings in most units. Pet friendly, each unit has washer and dryer hook ups and a classy retro interior. There is 24-hour concierge service, and the rooftop terrace really does the sunset justice.

The Legacy at Arts Quarter 301 N. Walker The Legacy describes itself as “city chic.” There is private, attached parking at each level and a fitness center which boasts a spa-style pool replete with misters. The design of The Legacy was inspired by the Great Masters, and the units are very roomy. This building

has gorgeous hardwood floors, island kitchens, and massive closets. My favorite touch? Spacious garden tubs with curved shower rods.

Park Harvey 200 N. Harvey In the heart of the business district, the Park Harvey houses one of the city’s most exclusive athletic clubs. The gym encompasses the whole lower level of the building and is open for business seven days a week. Workaholics, this is the place for you. There are restaurants and convenience shopping available inside as well as concierge service and 24hour maintenance.

The Deep Deuce 323 2nd The Deep Deuce has lavish landscaped grounds, transom windows, and larger than average patios and balconies. This school district includes the Oklahoma School of Math and Science. There are fireplaces in most units and small pets are welcome. A military discount is available as well. The Regency Tower 333 NW 5th A time honored Oklahoma City landmark, the Regency Tower is a Green

property that advertises its amenities as unmatchable. It’s a limited access building with assigned parking and an on-site dry cleaning service. With tanning beds, complimentary WI-FI hot spots, and an elevated pool deck, this really is the lap of luxury.

Block 42, the Classen 301 NE 4th If you’d rather buy than rent, Block 42 is cutting edge. The first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) complex in Oklahoma, this is one of the best buys downtown. Brought to you by the Humphreys Company, Block 42 is a high-end, metropolitan condo project. Environmental stewardship is first in design here, with concentration on energy efficient appliances, water efficiency, and drought tolerant plants. There is a perfectly landscaped common area to be used for art openings and community projects. These builders really wanted to give back to the community. These elevator access flats are one-of-a-kind. The Garage Loft Apartments 113 NW 13th One of the first downtown buildings to be reborn as residential, The Garage was renovated in 1995. Right on “Dealership Row,” this brick beauty used to be the old

Norton-Johnson Buick Company in the 30’s. Each unit is unique and equipped with its own security. With many steel framed windows, this former auto showroom has its original brick walls, and the interior walls have been lined with galvanized metal. The owners even kept the car ramp, so you can drive right up.

The Classen 2200 N. Classen A little further from downtown, The Classen lies in the heart of the Asia district, but is convenient to every attraction. Built in 1966 in the Frank Lloyd Wright style, this golden 21-story high rise gives a truly panoramic view of the city from the State Capitol through all of downtown. The Classen is massive, sporting basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, as well as its own putting green. On site are a 24-hour saltwater lap pool and Jacuzzi. Built as a bank tower, the apartments are huge, and the floor-to-ceiling windows will take your breath away. Downtown is at your feet with studios, three bedrooms, condos, and town homes to choose from. All are quite reasonable as well, offering big city excitement at an affordable price.

Showgirls...

in Oklahoma? Really? Wow! Does Oklahoma have unique entertainment that is sexy, classy, and elegant without pushing the boundaries too far?

I have been in the Entertainment industry for most of my life and in production, marketing, and promotions for at least 10 years. Living in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, I have had the privilege of working with some true professionals in Entertainment. Las Vegas takes the top for live entertainment. I remember several years ago when I returned to Oklahoma thinking about what I missed from some of the other cities. We have a lot of great artists and entertainers here, but not everyone knows about them and some, not all, leave more to be desired. It has taken me years to hone my own craft. For the past few years, I have worked with several performance troops, and recently none have been more helpful than the Oklahoma Showgirls. I had an event in February for a group of Entrepreneurs that wanted painted servers, living art walking around entertaining guests. We talked about the idea, and I thought, “Why not include a show? Just like Vegas but on a smaller scale.” The client loved the idea. I called my friend Lynn at Oklahoma Showgirls, part of Teaze Dance and Fitness, and they were quick to sign up. Then the unexpected happened, the WINTER STORMS… Aaagh!! The event was canceled, and I feared the loss of a major job. But good news, they wanted to reschedule, and the Showgirls made it a priority to show up on the new date in March. The Oklahoma Showgirls are one of the finest, classiest and most fun dance groups I have worked with, and I have

Arts&Interests

worked with some pretty awesome ones here in Oklahoma and across the United States. And what they did for me recently is definitely above par. Not only did they show up and help with creative and client consultation to fulfill the exact needs of the job, but they also performed above and beyond. I got nothing but rave reviews from the client. The Oklahoma Showgirls are classy and sexy costumed ladies that entertain, whether it be hostesses at events like the ADDY Awards in OKC, shows, events or even performing in area casinos. They provide the very best that Oklahoma has to offer. Choosing the right team for your projects can be crucial to your success. Oklahoma is about style and elegance and pushing the limits without going over the edge. You will often hear me say one of my favorite quotes, “If you are not on the edge, you are taking up too much room,” but I often add to it by saying, “If you go over the edge you better be soaring because you don’t want to fall in the pit.” Not sure where the quote originated, and I added to it over the years, but I think it makes sense. The reality is that Oklahoma is still a pretty conservative state. Pushing the boundaries is okay, but we need to respect each other, our morals, integrity, and ideals. I deal with it everyday in my line of work and the Oklahoma Showgirls bring professionalism, communication, and class to all the jobs they are hired for. I am grateful for their assistance and promptness to help me provide the very best entertainment for my clients. I love being born and raised in this great state. I am proud we live in a place with good values. If you are looking for a sophisticated group that is entertainment for your highend event, fundraiser, or casino, then this is group you should definitely consider. The work they put into the costuming and outfits alone is supreme. I love their creativity, their professionalism, and the joy they bring to their craft. flawless skin can now be achieved with this miraculous machine

Before Why can’t I have beautiful skin like all the Hollywood stars? Why does my skin look older than what it should? Can I do anything about my wrinkles without having a face lift? These are questions that you have asked yourself. Everyone wants younglooking, beautiful, radiant skin. Aging, sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle choices (including nutrition, alcohol, smoking) all play a role in how rapidly or slowly our skin ages and how healthy our skin appears. People with ‘perfect’ skin will tell you their secret to fabulous and flawless skin is avoiding excessive sun exposure and tanning, a healthy diet with adequate building blocks (protein) and co-factors (Vitamin C, E, A, and Zinc), and various regimens of skin care. In Oklahoma City, Laser Skin rejuvenation has become an important tool in reversing the effects of aging and the environment, as well as those life-style choices which impact negatively on the appearance of the skin

42 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

After What is the Pixel Laser? Pixel is a new FDA approved Laser based skin resurfacing procedure utilizing ablative fractional technology to enhance the appearance and texture of skin. Pixel is an Erbium-YAG laser, which can be applied to the skin of the face and neck as well as any other area of skin on the body, including the shoulders chest, hands or back. The effect of Pixel is to tighten the skin, to reduce or remove the appearance of discoloration, to decrease pore size, and improve scarring such as that due to keloids and to acne. Patients also report improvement in skin condition such as acne, stretch marks, and inflammation due to ingrown hair (folliculitis), and in dry or oily skin. With each stack of the hand piece of the Pixel Laser, a tiny ‘pixelated’ pattern of ablation is produced on a fractional area the skin by the laser. With the Pixel laser, 65% of the area treated remains “as is” untreated around the Pixel Ther-

The non-indented areas of the “waffle” represent zones that are untouched by the laser. These untouched areas serve as a reservoir for normal skin cells (fibroblasts) growth factors and connective tissue elements which promote the rapid repair of the injury zone of the newlylasered skin. New epidermis begins to appear in the treatments zones with in 24 hours. With passes of the laser handpiece, the skin is treated pixel by pixel or spot by spot until the areas of concern are completely treated. In so doing, the ‘downtime’ that would be associated with procedures that involve the non-fractional or total ablation is minimized.

How the Pixel Laser facilitates Skin Rejuvenation The skin resurfacing effect occurs with several passes of the laser over the affected skin to remove damaged outer layers of the epidermis, and through the heat the laser imparts, to stimulate the production of collagen and new skin cells in the underlying connective tissue layer of skin. The new layer of collagen allows the dermis layer of connective tissue to become thicker. The chemical cross-linking of the collagen fibrils, a part of the collagen remodeling process,

on western avenue. Ok, ladies! (and gents, you can be in on this too.) It’s time for a makeover. I don’t know about you, but I can say the last time I changed up my look was when I was still wearing flares and flip-flops. I know I’m not alone either. Let’s face it, you are either studying for a final, getting ready to go pick up the kids, or struggling to finish that deadline for work. It’s time to take a break… now—before summer starts and you’re expected to waltz toward that pool in a bikini and with no makeup. I’m not talking about fitness here. That goal was made last New Year’s, right? I’m talking “me time,” “girl time,” “ladies’ day out”—whatever you want to call it. It’s time to hit the spa! Fortunately for us, Oklahoma City is blessed with the perfect spot for a little R & R. Eden Salon has been established in Oklahoma City since 1982 (formerly My Sister’s Scissors). This ritzy, high-class, modern-styled salon houses some of Oklahoma’s most talented makeup and hair artists. I’ll be honest here, the prices are a little higher than your local Supercuts, but it’s completely worth it!

My favorite part about Eden Salon is that they use environmentally safe products that are great for the health of your hair and our planet. They also offer just about any hair treatment you can imagine. Permanent straightening, texturing, color correction, they do it all, and it is done by professionals who are well-educated in their field and ready to give you a look that compliments your style.

health&Beauty

Getting your nails done at Eden salon is unlike any salon you’ve visited before. They offer complimentary beverages, and you can listen to an iPod for free while you sit back and enjoy a top-notch manicure or pedicure. This is the perfect idea for a weekend with the girls. If you want something a little more intense, say a relaxing, mood-changing massage, then Eden Salon can provide that as well. They offer amazing services, which include a consultation prior to the massage, just so they can find out the best way to cater to your needs. They don’t rush you either, giving you plenty of time before your scheduled appointment to change and relax. A massage can benefit your entire body and mind, and the soothing experience lasts for days. If you’re a mom or that busy career woman, nothing can benefit you more than a calming and relaxing facial. It’s scientific fact that dead skin can cause you to look old and tired, not to mention how it can make you feel. They offer so many choices, it can seem daunting at first, but the professionals at Eden Salon know their business. They can provide the perfect solution to your needs, whether it’s bags under the eyes, acne, or simply a dull complexion that needs some new life. So make the plan. Call up your girls and tell your husband, boss, boyfriend, etc. that you are taking a day off. This has been a tough year for everyone, and I don’t know about you, but the weather has wreaked havoc on my hair, face, and skin. Just make sure you plan ahead of time. Eden Salon is in high demand, and they require appointments, so give them a call! Here is their information: 4200 N. Western, Oklahoma City, OK 73118 Phone: 405-525-6110

VALENTINO

So6ixMay2011 By: Johnathan Kayne

THE LAST EMPEROR

Do yourself a favor and log onto Amazon right now and purchase your copy of “Valentino: The Last Emperor”. Plan to be inspired for less than thirteen dollars. The title of this amazing documentary about the icon of haute couture, may sound quite pompous, but once you’ve seen this smart and incisive film, it will seem like a simple statement of fact. For one thing, Valentino Garavani, a fashion designer so celebrated only his first name is necessary, certainly lives like an emperor. When he travels, it’s by private jet with his six pugs always in attendance, or on his 152-foot yacht with a full-time staff of 11. When he sleeps, it might be in his 17th century chateau outside of Paris, his villa in Rome, his ski retreat in Switzerland, the town house in London or his apartment in Manhattan. Truly, it is good to be the king. Yet as “Valentino,” directed by Vanity Fair writer and editor Matt Tyrnauer, demonstrates, all this affluence flows from the prodigious gifts -- even watching the man pencil-sketch a gown is impressive -- of someone who decided on this profession in childhood and has been at the top of the designer game for 45 years. In all that time, he has dressed everyone who mattered, including Au-

46 SO6IX MAGAZINE • www.so6ix.com

drey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, and Princess Diana. Never forget, he tells someone, that “I make dresses for women who actually wear them.” He also makes dresses of such surpassing beauty they actually make people weep. Blessed with unusual access, “Valentino” takes you inside the designer’s world, showing you his legendary iron will in action as he and his team of approximately 70 seamstresses, all of whom work only by hand, prepare the 2006 spring/summer collection for its Paris debut. But there is more. For “Valentino” also offers entree to the key relationship of the designer’s personal and professional life, his half-century partnership with Giancarlo Giammetti, the combination of a creative dreamer with a practical man of business that led to the fashion firm’s unprecedented success. Matteo Marzotto, whose family took control of the company in 2002, says, “I don’t think Valentino would have been the same without Giancarlo. Not even half and not even one-third of it.” With cinematographer Tom Hurwitz shadowing the men so closely that the designer periodically loses his patience, we get to see all sides of this intense and complex connection, the spats as well as the intense emotional bond between individuals who estimate they’ve spent perhaps two months apart in a half a century together. I have the impression Giancarlo is the only one licensed to tell Valentino the truth. “How did I do?” he asks him in the back seat of their limousine. “Great.” “Tell me the truth.” “A little too tan,” Giancarlo says. This to a

Fashion

So6ixMay2011 man who looks deep orange. How can he design such dresses and not see himself in the mirror? Surely there is a browner sunless tanner or bronzer? “Valentino,” for which 250 hours of footage was shot from June 2005 to July 2007, had the good fortune to be made during a pivotal moment in the designer’s career, when changes in the financial end of the world of fashion lead to the possibility of new corporate owners and a threat to Valentino’s traditional way of working. In the face of all this, Giammetti decides to mount a drop-dead 45th-anniversary Valentino celebration in Rome, a three-day career retrospective culminating in a party at the Temple of Venus in the Roman Forum. The sets and spectacles for this celebration in Rome resemble, he complains, Cirque du Soleil. They do. The models fly high above the crowd. Everyone is there. The film is crowded with stars, and they’re all in the background: Sophia, Gwyneth, Mick, Elton, Princess This, and Countess That. It’s a celebration worthy of the “Emperor” and a fitting way for both the designer and this unexpectedly involving documentary to literally and metaphorically bring it all back home. Like Valentino, I have always been enamored with the starlets on the silver screen and on the red carpet. Growing up with five sisters, I understand the importance of making women look and feel beautiful. I feel so blessed to have a career in this profession and have been truly inspired by Valentino and this documentary. I hope you can find the time to enjoy an intimate look at a designer that is so legendary.

All the Rage for Hair

It’s always fun to try something new, and right now is the perfect time to add a little flare to your hair without embarking upon a major change or spending too much money. So what’s this new craze to spice up your hair life? Answer: feathers! The feather craze has spread, and it’s recently hit Oklahoma by storm. Feather extensions are definitely the hottest new trend in hair accessories, and they come in a variety of colors and sizes. You can go for an instant eye-catcher with hot pink or bright blue. Or you can go for subtlety with natural hair tones such as shades of blondes and browns. And you can choose large, bold feathers or a dainty look with little feathers. Once you decide to add feather extensions, make sure you are choosing a quality product. There are various kinds of feather extensions on the market, and choosing the highest quality is impor-

tant for your hair. Some of the best are with all the great lengths USA, babes, fusion, and hair shoppe. Also, you want to make sure the hairstylist you chose knows which extensions work best for your hair type. Having a variety of lines available so the stylist can help you select the extension that is just right for you is important. So, if you are looking to change up your look, this could be the ticket. Once all your friends see you with feather extensions, they will want them too. But you don’t have to stop with your own hair; the feather locks also have puppy feathers so your dogs can be outfitted with the latest accessory too! Don’t put off making a change with your hair; just add feathers. It’s simple and fun. So make an appointment and get your feather extensions today. You will be surprised how easily you can transform your look in just 5 minutes.
