The Sun Shines at Last … or at least it does as I write this. It seems that one of the very few days without rain, since the first issue of Soar Valley Life rolled off the press back in April, was St Swithun’s Day! Still, it hasn’t dampened our resolve - or yours it appears, judging by the response to our competitions and from our advertisers. The magazine grows and evolves every month along with our readership; Soar Valley Life now has its own Facebook page with fans as far away as Brisbane and Sydney in Australia, who view our online version of the magazine and keep up to date with us on a regular basis. Our following will increase even more as we launch our brand new web site containing features and articles together with others that didn’t make it into print. You’ll also be able to find our advertisers and go directly to their own websites from Soar Valley Life’s. Take a look on the opposite page for further details. The website will also evolve over time with something new to read every time you visit – just as the magazine changes with each issue. …and change we do. The Greek philosopher Heraclitus around 500 BC pronounced the universal paradox that nothing endures but change and that is the only constant. Last Sunday I attended an exhibition of photographs at Gotham Parish Church, hosted by the local history society. There were hundreds of photographs time-lining the changes in this little south Nottinghamshire village, and I was amazed at just how much change there had been. There were pictures of grocers, butchers, pubs, farms, railway lines, gypsum mines, sweet shops, chapels, workshops, wool shops, chip shops, flower shops, garages, blacksmiths… all no longer in existence. There was a picture of my Mum standing outside her haberdashery shop which was all decked out for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, and that made me sad, hitting home at a personal level just how much has gone. I accept that some change is necessary, indeed inevitable and unavoidable; I am today taking my Mum to have her first hearing aid fitted and this change for her is not entirely welcome. But it will improve her quality of life and ours too, if it allows us not to have to constantly repeat ourselves in her presence! Grateful thanks to Charnwood Hearing Aid Centre – page 13. But is it by how we manage change that we may be measured? Gotham is still a pleasant little backwater with a strong sense of community. A wall inside the new memorial hall has its bricks inscribed with the many family names of those who donated money to build the hall. The annual Gala has made a welcome return, the newsagent is now also a mini-market and the church appears to thrive, together with the Local History Society. So, do we embrace change, not for its own sake, but to make the very best of what we have? And I hope that’s what you’ll find in this month’s Soar Valley Life - the best of what we have!

21st Anniversary
£
Optometrist Mohammed Bhojani celebrated 21 years practicing in the Loughborough area by inviting three of his first ever patients back to his Quorn practice with a celebratory cake, some drinks, two beautiful bouquets and even a complimentary pair of glasses! For over two decades, ever since he opened the doors of his first eye care practice called Eye Check Opticians on Market St. Loughborough in 1991, Mrs Jennifer Baggaley, her husband James, both from Loughborough and her sister Mrs Shirley Taylor from Castle Donington have been regular clients of Mohammed’s. His original branch quickly expanded into the largest and fastest growing independent opticians’ chain in Leicestershire with eight practices employing over fifty full time staff including six optometrists. In 1999, Mohammed received an offer from a larger national firm to acquire all his branches; however, he retained his quietest practice on the High Street in Quorn and then opened a second optometry practice in Barrow upon Soar (called Visual Answers Opticians) where he continues to see his patients even today. Over 21 years, Mohammed has personally tested the eyes of over 30,000 people living in the Loughborough area with some clients coming from further afield travelling regularly from Sheffield, Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester and London just to see him. ‘We have one patient who comes to see us every two years from the Bahamas - I always offer her the option of a personal home visit if ever she can’t make it,’ joked Mohammed. ‘We’ve followed Mr Bhojani from his original Market Street practice in Loughborough to his branches in Quorn & Barrow. He is a very caring professional with a personable attitude and absolutely up to date equipment.
Page 4
The care and attention he gives makes us feel like a member of the family. We’ve had no cause for complaint in over 21 years!’ said Mrs Taylor. Mohammed is also involved in a variety of other related activities: as sessional optometrist in the Corneal Laser Centre at the Spire Hospital Leicester for 10 years, he worked closely with one of the top local eye specialists, Mr Ray Chaudhuri. More recently, he was asked to give lectures and presentations on aspects of contact lens and practice management to fellow optometrists in the UK and Europe at venues such as The Royal Society of Medicine. He is currently a faculty member of The Academy of Eye Care Excellence, which is part of Novartis Healthcare one of largest medical healthcare companies in the world. In 2007 he was even invited to the Queens Garden Party for services to charity. To celebrate 21 years, his practices at Quorn and Barrow are offering full eye examinations at the original 1991 price of just £10 to anyone who mentions ‘21Year Celebration’ when making their appointment. For more information contact Mohammed Bhojani on 07973 147089 or email: mjb.eye@ntlworld.com or www.VisualAnswers.co.uk

A Contemporary Romance He was wearing a grey hoodie, and a dab of ‘Eau de Skate’ He chose a wicked restaurant for our brilliant first date, He ordered two huge hamburgers, with relish and some fries, And across that plastic table I gazed deep into his eyes When I saw his ‘HATE’ tattoo, I knew I’d found my perfect heaven, And I got to know him well, from half past ten until eleven. We had to leave quite quickly as his lovely pit bull Clyde, Was frightening all the customers; and snarling, just outside, He took me for a lovely walk just by the local tip And there over the council bins, I dropped my bag of chips, We have a brand new baby now, a lovely little boy, I’ve dressed him in a hoodie and I’m going to name him Troy I know his Dad still loves me but my best mate’s not convinced, She’s told me I should ask him…but I haven’t seen him since.

Soot & Sweep Not a lot has changed for the chimney sweep since Charles Kingsley wrote ‘The Water Babies’
“The basic principle hasn’t changed much since Victorian times,” says Mark Aylett, the Chimney Doc. “Soot accumulates inside the chimney walls and needs dislodging with a brush; it falls into the fireplace where it‘s collected and disposed of. These days we use Gaffer tape to seal a blanket around the fireplace and an industrial vacuum to clear up afterwards. For narrower flues we use

...except we don’t send children, or anyone for that matter, up the chimney any more! One of my earliest recollections is of waiting outside on the lawn watching in great anticipation for the chimney sweep’s brush to appear out of the chimney. Yelling and cheering when we first saw it seemed a necessary thing to do; that was our job – how else could Mister Sweep know it was there if we didn’t tell him? The mystery of how his brush found its way up through the blackness and out into the open air dwelled in the same magic fog as things like Santa Claus, or how you could exit a department store lift in a different place from where you’d entered. And watching the Chimney Doc’s brush emerge into the light from the tall, aluminium, industrial-size flue at Leicester University the other day was almost as thrilling, bringing a smile to my face as I remembered my childhood days.

The things we encounter are sometimes quite amazing: birds’ nests with eggs in them are very common, as are cowls which have become completely blocked. Dislodged and loose chimney pots all too often pose quite a threat but, of course, we check before we start and if all is well an average chimney takes about forty minutes. Wood burning stoves present a problem if they haven’t been fitted properly; we frequently find that the flue for the stove has been inadequately fixed and is a safety issue. But we are able to deal with any situation and can offer professional advice and service for all types of chimney and flue. If anyone is concerned, please get in touch and we can advise accordingly.” Two things I noticed that have certainly changed – Mark doesn’t go from job to job on a push bike with his rods strapped to the cross bar, but instead he has a rather smart van. Also - he hasn’t got a face as black as soot...

Short Story - The Goldcrest “I’ve got a job for you.” Ray looked up warily from his newspaper at the Tupperware box in Audrey’s hands. “I saw brambles covered in fruit on Glebe Lane yesterday. You know, opposite the pine woods.” “I know where it is”, Ray muttered. “I’m in the mood for jam making.” “You can buy jam for a pound in the supermarket.” Audrey sighs heavily, “You’re like a moody teenager. Go and fill this tub. The fresh air will do you good.” Ray failed to see how picking blackberries could do anyone any good. The vicious thorns, the exploding fruit that stained everything it touched. Yet he was glad of an excuse to get out of the house. Audrey may have small feet but he was starting to get under them. Retirement, he decided, didn’t suit him. He missed the busy office, the staff gossip and the last minute orders. Now every day felt the same, there was nothing new or remarkable to enjoy. He felt as though his fire had gone out. This was why he found himself half an hour later stood on his tiptoes on a quiet lane picking blackberries. The thorns snagged his shirt and tore fine scratches on his arms and hands. Sticky juice stained his fingers and dripped down his wrists. The back of his neck was prickling in the hot sun, and reaching for the ripest berries was beginning to make his calves ache. Then he heard a high pitched reedy whistle close by. He turned and peered into the dark shadows of the pine trees. He saw a flash of yellow as though someone had struck a match. He put down the tub and stepped closer to the trees. A tiny bird, even smaller than a wren, hopped out of the shadows onto a branch. Ray held his breath. It moved cautiously on fragile legs with charming jerky movements, like a delicate creature made of clockwork. It was exotically beautiful, on its back a shimmer of green feathers, and down its head two black stripes framing a bright golden cap. A word popped into Ray’s head, a word he had not thought of since he was a boy looking through his father’s Spotter’s Guide. “Goldcrest.” He whispered. He’d never seen one in real life. The little bird pecked at the pine needles with its sharp beak, searching for insects. It froze, as though suddenly aware of how exposed it had let itself become, gave

another chirp and took flight, disappearing into the safety of the trees. Ray let out his breath. He heard the bird call again, and another bird call back in reply, and then another. The woods sounded as though they were alive with Goldcrests. Ray hastily put the lid on the half filled tub of blackberries and was back at home within ten minutes. Audrey inspected the harvest as he rifled through the sideboard for his old binoculars. “Well, I won’t be making much jam out of these”, she said in dismay. “I’m going straight back, I’ll get you some more.” Ray called over his shoulder as he found what he was looking for. “Will that make you satisfied?” Audrey looked at the scratches on Ray’s arms, the leaves in his hair and the berry stains on his fingers. But most of all she saw the flush of colour in his cheeks and the sparkle in his eyes. “Oh yes”, she said. “I think it will.” by Jackie Brewster

Hassle Free Holidays with LighterLife With the school holidays well underway, the kid’s treats in the cupboard and little time for yourself, every Mum knows that sticking to a diet and shifting those unwanted pounds is almost impossible!
using meal replacements with counselling in small friendly groups, to help you lose weight quickly and safely, and maintain that weight loss.
According to recent research, the average mum gains around half a stone during the summer holidays, tucking into kids’ leftovers as well as an increased amount of ice creams during the hot weather. As the sunshine increases more and more people are spending time picnicking, snacking away on fatty foods such as pork pies and sausage rolls.
Weekly, single-sex group meetings are the feature of LighterLife and what makes the Programmes unique. Run by Debbie Ford they’re designed to help you explore some of the reasons you put on weight – because there’s usually a bit more to it than simply ‘eating too much’. Understanding why you overeat means you’re less likely to return to the old habits that led to weight gain in the past, so you can live lighter in the future.
At LighterLife we aim to help clients understand how to manage the different times in their lives to help keep the pounds off. What is LighterLife? LighterLife is an industry leader in weight management, with an established and highly successful approach to weight loss and weight management. LighterLife has been developed for people who have one stone or more to lose and since 1996 has helped over 500,000 people lose weight and keep it off.

Ringing the changes From Boot Works to Underwear to Work outs…
The earliest census that records a licensed victualler on Brook Street, Sileby was in 1861 when Ann Sarson carried on the trade. In 1881 it was George and Elizabeth Tinkler and twenty years later Edwin Rose and family had taken up the reins. The mono photograph (probably taken in the early years of the twentieth century) shows that J. Rudkin was the purveyor of Offilers Ales The Bell Ringers Arms circa 1910 & Stouts at number 5 Brook Street – the Bell Ringers Arms. Next to the Bell Ringers is the three storey Lawson and Ward Station Boot works which ran down Brook Street to the cottages at the junction of the High Street. The company operated until the late 1960s. Some time after this the top floor was removed and it became a hosiery factory and thereafter, for a few years a company The same building today making ladies underwear occupied the premises. Before Physfit Gyms took over in 2009 the first floor had remained unoccupied for a number of years. It is now transformed into a modern gym with the very latest equipment, the training gallery runs right through the first floor almost as long as the jitty from Brook Street to the Tesco car park. See photo on right. William Middleton, owner of Physfit Gyms says “We are going from strength to strength and are now the best equipped gym in the region. Now that we’ve opened up the whole area there’s a much lighter and more Physfit’s refurbished Gym in Sileby spacious feel. We have capacity for about a hundred more members” I bet whoever named the old pub back in Ann Sarson’s day weren’t thinking about dumb bells and the shoes that Lawson and Ward fashioned were a far cry from the hundred pound a pair trainers Brook Street from the western end worn by Physfit’s members.

The Toughest Race on Earth… Imagine this: swim for 2.4 miles, cycle around mountainous terrain for 112 miles and then finish off the race with a 26 mile marathon in temperatures of up to 34 degrees centigrade… Steve Hillyer, vice president and former chairman of Sileby Vikings Rugby Club and therapist of Recro Sports Massage Therapy, did a lot more than imagine it; on Saturday May 19th of this year he actually took part, along with 1,700 other athletes, in the 21st Ironman Lanzarote challenge. “I’d been doing triathlons for three years but nothing like the Ironman challenge,” said Steve. “The Olympic distances for the triathlon are swim 1,500m (1,600 yd) – bike 40 km (24.9 miles) – and then run for 10 km (6.2 miles). But I wanted to do something special to raise money for cancer research in memory of Erika’s dad Harald, who died of cancer at the age of 62. Harald had intended to take part in the Ironman challenge in 2011 but had to pull out when he became ill.” I asked about the training regime that goes with something as strenuous as that and Erika, Steve’s wife and partner in Recro, answered, “Even though Steve has a very high residual level of fitness, he started intensive training in January and that continued for twenty weeks at six days a week; every week he’d do the equivalent of two or three Ironman triathlons.” Erika went on to describe some of his other interests, “After he’d given up skydiving seriously, back in 2006, Steve helped to start Sileby Rugby Club, along with a group of others.” “We use Platt’s Lane playing field in Cossington,” said Steve,” and from those humble beginnings we’ve achieved some amazing things, culminating in our winning the league this year to gain promotion to division three. Then, at the end of last season, I decided to take a back seat with the Rugby to concentrate on other areas of my life and
Page 18
put back some of what I’ve learnt over the years. I started training at Loughborough College last summer in Sports Massage and took separate courses in Kinesiology taping – Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement and taping specific areas aids and improves performance - both before and after vigorous sporting exercise or injury. Taping aids recovery as well as improving the lymphatic drainage system - vital for muscle and joint restoration. Erika has gone through sports therapy training as well and her mum is qualified in Reiki techniques so we’ll be offering a whole range of therapy services as time goes on. And I’m still helping with the Truck Pull as usual at the end of August, and providing one of Hillyer Transport’s trucks for the day.” (See all about that on page 16) I wondered where Steve saw Recro in the future. “I’d like to see us attracting other sports therapy specialists to join us so that we could specialize more with diagnosis tools and technology like Ultrasound; we could be out there with teams and sports people wherever they are, not just in the treatment rooms. We really do like helping people to be better at what they chose to do.” Steve considers his greatest achievement – so far! – was to have completed the Ironman Lanzarote challenge and my last question, to both Steve and Erika, was to ask what was their greatest treasure. Without hesitation they were unanimous, “After our three kids, definitely our health. Losing Harald made us realise how precious life really is; and good health is a person’s greatest resource.” And Recro is here to help people maintain that...

Reader’s Recipe Lemon Drizzle Cake Makes 30 squares
W fo w c a
Ingredients For the cake: 225g softened butter 225g caster sugar 275g self-raising flour 2 tsp baking powder 4 eggs 4tbsps milk Grated zest of 2 lemons For the crunchy topping: 175g granulated sugar Juice of 2 lemons Method: Preheat the oven to 180c/160c fan or gas mark 4. Line a greased 30 x 23 x 4cm roasting tin with baking paper. Measure all ingredients for the cake into a large bowl. Beat well for about 2 minutes until well blended. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level the top gently with a spatula.
Page 22
Bake in the middle of the oven for about 35 – 40 minutes or until the cake springs back when lightly pressed and is beginning to shrink away from the sides of the tin. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for a few minutes before lifting it out of the tin while still in its lining paper. Carefully remove the paper and place the cake onto a wire rack over a tray. To make the crunchy topping, mix the lemon juice and granulated sugar in a small bowl to give a runny consistency. Spoon this mixture evenly over the cake whilst it is still just warm. Cut into squares when cold and store in an airtight tin. Submitted by D.C.F. of Sileby

Drinking Water is one of the most basic needs for human life. Although we can survive without food for around three weeks, we can’t manage without water for more than about three days.
utes d is
ore wire
ll just
.
The mantra of ‘drink eight glasses of water a day’ is repeated again and again as the ultimate goal for good health. But actually it’s a myth and it’s not really known where it came from. How can it be true when we are all different sizes, some of us are active and some are sedentary, and the weather may be freezing or sweltering? Your water intake doesn’t even have to come from ‘water’. That is, fruit and vegetables, soups, milk and soft drinks – and even teas and coffees, despite being slightly diuretic - are all sources of fluid. Again another urban myth is that only pure water counts and that simply isn’t true.
Although the obvious thing to say is to drink when you are thirsty, as we age the ability to feel thirst deteriorates. So you should be conscious of this, and particularly if you have been active in warm weather, increase your fluid intake for the rest of the day. But don’t go from one extreme to the other; if you feel you have become dehydrated make an effort to drink little and often. It can be dangerous to consume a very high quantity of fluid in a short time. One of the easiest ways to tell if you need to drink more is to pay attention to your urinary habits. If it has been many hours since you last passed water and when you do go your urine is dark yellow, then it is time to increase your fluids.

Planning for the Unexpected
Lasting Powers of Attorney
Life is all about planning - but what if the unthinkable happens? What if you suffer a serious injury or illness or develop a mental or physical disability which means you can no longer work or make decisions for yourself? What would happen to all those plans? Have you made provision for the smooth running of your life and business if you were out of action? Forget smooth, could you cope at all? A Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone you trust as an Attorney to make decisions on your behalf in relation to your personal financial and business interests with guidance as to how they should act or shouldn’t act regarding property, bank accounts or private investments. In addition, you can create a Personal Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney in which you can appoint
the same or different Attorneys to make decisions on your behalf regarding personal matters such as what medical treatment you should or shouldn’t receive if you were unable to make those decisions yourself. Creating a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is not as complicated or as expensive as you may think. We create LPAs for our clients on a fixed fee basis from £350 + VAT. Good Grief by Steve Johns There’s an old Scottish proverb that says “Time and thinking tame the strongest grief” ...little comfort for one in the depths of sadness feeling overwhelmed by the recent loss of a loved one. Grief is one of the most powerful of all human emotions and one which most of us will encounter at some stage in our lives. We can all relate to it, so much so that in 1995, when the BBC’s Bookworm programme conducted a UK wide poll to discover the nation’s favourite poem, the winner by far was the following which poignantly directs the reader to assuage their grief:
Do not Stand at my Grave and Weep Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft star-shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there; I did not die. by Mary Elizabeth Frye
According to Grainger E. Westburg, author of the excellent book Good Grief, there are 10 stages we go through: 1. State of shock - anaesthetized against the overwhelming loss. Not comprehending and not able to face the full magnitude of it.
2. Strong desire to express emotion - beginning to realize how dreadful the loss is. Venting or releasing these feelings is better than trying to repress them. 3. Depression and loneliness - feeling of “No help for me.” Down in the depths of despair. 4. Distress - “Ill” with symptoms related to the loss. 5. Panic - convinced “something is wrong with me” as a person, can concentrate on little else. 6. Guilt about our loss - may recall own past neglect, mistreatment, or wrong to the deceased. Wrongs may be imaginary or exaggerated. But they may be REAL wrongs with REAL guilt. Confession and unburdening of real guilt gives best relief. 7. Anger and resentment - hostile expressions toward those who “caused” the loss are common. 8. Resistance to returning - cannot get back to “business as usual.” Must bear loss alone, since others are back to normal. 9. Hope that our lives will go on - emotional balance returns little by little, like the healing of a physical wound. 10. Then a struggle to affirm our new reality - not “old self again” because there is a new situation. Stronger, deeper, better for having faced and overcome the disaster. I write this, not from an academic stand point, but from first hand experience. I’ll not dwell on my personal scenario except to say that when I felt I couldn’t cope on my own I contacted a counsellor. He guided me through and showed me that what I was experiencing, painful and difficult though it was, was all perfectly natural and just nature’s way of dealing with grief. I could not praise highly enough the precious help that my counsellor gave to me. I was able to come alive again and start life anew.
Knowing Who to Turn to When the Rains Set In by Nicola Massey, Steve Johns & Andrew Bates
C
The nation grieved when Princess Diana died and Elton John sang these immortal words at her funeral “...never knowing who to cling to when the rains set in.”
C y r
What help the People’s Princess had ever received we know not, but there are lots of professionals now available outside of the NHS that offer outstanding help and support when we need it. Here is a summary of what some of those professionals do and when we might turn to them for help. Counselling ...a process that enables a person to sort out issues and reach decisions affecting their life. Often counselling is sought out at times of change or crisis, it need not be so however, as counselling can also help us at any time in our life. Talking with a counsellor in a way that helps solve a problem or helps to create conditions that will cause the client to understand and/or improve his/her behaviour, character, values or life circumstances. Counselling can be very helpful to people at times of difficulty such as bereavement or loss. It provides a neutral place away from the person’s everyday life. The counsellor provides a non-judgemental relationship, where the person can talk about whatever they wish, without the fear of upsetting others close to them. Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to induce a deep state of relaxation, during which our sub or unconscious minds are highly receptive to new perspectives and ideas. Our unconscious mind processes hundreds of thousands of pieces of information at any given time,
Page 26
whilst storing over four hundred million relating to our beliefs, attitudes, behavioural habits, memories, etc. It also takes care of all our automatic responses, such as the regulation of our breathing, blood circulation and tissue repair, all without us having to consciously think about it. But the unconscious mind also stores our learned responses like talking, writing, walking - everything we think and do. When we access our unconscious mind through hypnosis we are able to learn and change our behaviours very quickly. So if you have something in your life you want to change, stopping smoking, losing weight, learning new skills - hypnosis often provides rapid success.
Psychotherapy ...the therapeutic interaction or treatment contracted between a trained professional and a client or patient, family, couple or group. The problems addressed are psychological in nature and of no specific kind or degree, but rather depend on the specialty of the practitioner. While most psychotherapy hinges on communication between the therapist and the individual, it is much more than talking about your problems. While family or friends can help you feel better or even provide good advice for change, psychotherapy is based on therapeutic principles, structure and technique. It differs from other relationships in several ways. Therapists are trained to understand what you say — your words, how you say them and which ones you do not use. They pay attention to body language and voice tone to fully understand your speech. It is said that up to 95% of our communication is non verbal; a therapist is trained to pick up on all of this and so can help drill down to the cause of a problem and offer a solution to whatever it might be that is holding you back. We’ll be exploring more of this in the next issue of Soar Valley Life...

Your leisure is someone’s livelihood Close gates Start no fires Keep away from livestock and animals Do not stray from marked paths Take litter home Do not damage walls, hedgerows or fences Cross only at stiles or gates Protect plants, trees and wildlife Keep dogs on leads Respect crops, machinery and rural property Do not contaminate water Although not essential we recommend good walking boots During hot weather take something to drink on the way - All walks can easily be negotiated by an averagely fit person - The routes have been recently walked and surveyed, changes can however occur, please follow any signed diversions - Some paths cross fields which are under cultivation - All distances and times are approximate. The maps give an accurate portrayal of the area, but scale has however been sacrificed in some cases for the sake of clarity and to fit restrictions of page size. Walking Close To have taken every care in the research and production of this guide but cannot be held responsible for the safety of anyone using them. During very wet weather, parts of these walks may become impassable through flooding, check before starting out. - Stiles and rights of way can get overgrown during the summer folding secateurs are a useful addition to a walker’s rucksack.

Our walks are compiled by Clive Brown who holds the copyright to them and all the material supplied with them. Clive Brown has walked more than 5000 miles of paths and bridleways in the last 10 years, in all sorts of weather conditions from driving snow to blazing sunshine and biting wind. The surfaces of rights of way have varied from tarmac to deep furrows in muddy ploughed fields, through pristine new wooden gates and over old broken stiles chewed by horses. Clive enjoyed walking expeditions at weekends and on holiday but this changed after he was made redundant in 1999 at the age of 52. He spent a year fruitlessly chasing job after job, only to find that employers were looking for someone younger. During the second half of 2000 he walked and researched the first three books in the ‘Walking Close to’ series; these were ready to go on sale in the Spring of 2001. Unfortunately the Foot and Mouth crisis intervened and the general public were banned from setting foot in the countryside so the publication was postponed until August. The books were an immediate success and the series was expanded in Spring 2002. New titles have been released regularly ever since. ‘Walking Close to the Soar near Leicester’ first appeared in 2004. There are now 74 titles in the series, five new books having been published this Spring. They are available in tourist information centres, good bookshops, Country Parks, visitor centres and local shops. Total sales of the series are now over 72000 copies. Clive’s website is www.walkingcloseto.com where you can order any of his 74 walking guides. You can email him directly with any comments you may have at walkingclose@yahoo. co.uk, or, of course you can get in touch with us here: editor@soarvalleylife.co.uk

Who You Gonna Call? In these days of niche trades and specialisation it is often very confusing who to call if you have a problem in the home. In the latest issue of the Leicestershire Yellow Pages directory there are more than ten thousand businesses listed on almost six hundred pages split into hundreds of categories. Let’s say you have a leak in an upstairs water tank that forms part of your water and heating system, who do you call? Even with something as common as this you have a number of options. Firstly you’d probably think of a plumber, because it involves water. Then a gas or boiler repair man. Then you’ll need an electrician because of the pump and circuit board that controls the heating system. Finally you’ll need a painter and decorator to make good the ugly stain on the ceiling in your newly decorated lounge! Every one of the specialists you contact may well have a call out charge and a minimum tariff. Charnwood Maintenance Services, based in Loughborough, are the one-stop experts for all home and property maintenance tasks. They’ve been providing support for businesses and home owners in
the Charnwood area for almost two decades and have managed thousands of projects, large and small, since 1994. Dave Walters, CMS’s principle says, “We look at every job individually. Each member of our dedicated team has a special set of skills; so we are able to offer a complete solution to every situation. We meet the needs of both business and domestic customers bringing value where other specialists can’t. We isolate the problem, provide the solution, supply and fit the parts, and make good the decoration afterwards. And we provide long term maintenance solutions too - offering property care services to landlords, estate agents and individual home owners, from the largest portfolio to the smallest house and garden.” I asked Dave if he had any advice he could share with us – early warning signs or potential hazards where a stitch in time might save a disaster later on. “Don’t overload power sockets. The other day I saw fifteen electrical devices plugged into one socket via two eight-way extension leads! Don’t leave anything on stand-by. Un-plug receiving devices during a thunder storm. If you have a water leak from upstairs, get an expert to check all sockets and light fittings below the leak. When you go on holiday get a timer switch or two and set it to random with a light or radio plugged into it.”

Recipes from around the world: ...a touch of Spain every Saturday on
Loughborough Market
TAPAS The Spanish word tapa can be translated as lid. Tapas originated in Andalucia where it became a custom to serve wine and sherry
with a lid on the glass. It is thought that this was to stop flies contaminating the drink. The bartender would place a small amount of food such as bread or an olive on the lid to eat with the wine. The custom spread throughout Spain but tapas became food in its own right. They are snack sized food made with local produce such as tomatoes or olives. Over the last 30 years their popularity has grown to such an extent that they are now served all over the world.
