Mary and I went on a short break to Harrogate at the beginning of June a li le bit of research, family history, heritage railway discovery at Worth Valley Railway, literary culture at the Bronté Museum in Haworth and finding how ordinary objects can turn to stone at Mother Shipton’s Cave in Knaresborough. And, of course, sampling of the local fare Yorkshire beer and tea are renowned. It was also an opportunity to catch up with our graphic design team, Alison and Simon, who live in that part of the world. Upon arriving home on Sunday June 4th I phoned my Mum to tell her we were back. She said she wasn’t very well and the doctor was coming to see her the following lunch me; she asked if I could be there when he came. The next day we discussed together the benefit of a short break in a respite home, so that Mum could rest and be looked a er for a week or two. Ini ally she baulked at the cost and refused. The following day she agreed, but was unhappy at having to wait. By Wednesday she was much worse and we were able to fast track her admission into Field House at Radcliffe on Trent on Thursday a ernoon. My brother’s wife had worked there un l a couple of years ago, so we knew it had a good reputa on. But Mum became too ill for the Field House team to cope with and was admi ed to hospital in the night. She died on the following Tuesday, 13th June, having never properly recovered consciousness. It feels now as if we didn’t press Mum’s pause bu on soon enough for her to rest and recuperate... But, the irony is, as a result of all this, our magazine pause bu on has only just been released on this deadline weekend a er all the whirlwind frenzy of arrangements and family and friends coming together for the funeral on Friday. So, we hope you’ll understand why your magazine is a bit thinner this month and we apologise if we didn’t get in touch soon enough if you wanted an advert. Mum’s Final Farewell is on page 43. A new normal service will be resumed next me…

Tax Changes for Landlords In previous years landlords have been able to claim the full amount of mortgage interest paid against their rental income and if they were a higher rate tax payer this would have been a saving of 40% income tax. However, from April 2017 this relief is being capped to the basic tax rate of tax and phased in over a four year period. Landlords of residen al proper es could see their income tax liability from rental profits increase considerably if they are a higher rate tax payer. For the 2017/18 tax year 75% of the interest costs will be deduc ble with the remaining 25% allowed at basic rate. 2018/19 will see 50% of the interest deduc ble with 50% basic rate relief. 2019/20 it will be just 25% of the interest charges allowed with 75% restricted to basic rate relief. From 2020/21 only basic rate tax relief will be allowed on all of the interest costs incurred. This applies to all individuals le ng residen al proper es purchased with a mortgage but not corporate landlords or commercial proper es. Caroline Dinsmore 0116 230 3973

Safe Journey Now that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. However, don’t forget to ensure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but also during the journey there; it is worth taking a few very sensible precau ons. Don’t take something home the day you buy it if it is too large to fit in your car. However slowly you drive, if the plant is s cking out of a sunroof or window the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged, and it is possible that a stem may be broken. If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc.

If you are determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essen al that you wrap up anything which is s cking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage. Make sure that it is ed down extremely well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember that anything protruding from your car could poten ally cause a driving hazard to other road users, so be sensible.

Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather temperatures increase quickly in a closed car, even with the windows or sunroof open. Under these condi ons the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be safer for a

Tips for a Perfect Lawn We all love to relax in the garden in the summer and now is the ideal me to give your lawn an overhaul to ensure it remains healthy. Here are a few simple ps from lawn expert Mar n Williams, of lawn treatment company GreenThumb, to get the perfect lawn and keep it that way right through the year. The most important thing is to water at mes when the moisture is likely to soak in rather than evaporate early morning or late evening is the best. When it’s dry, a good soaking once or twice a week is much more beneficial for your lawn as opposed to a light sprinkling every day which can cause the roots to grow shallow and be prone to drying out.

Page 14

Try to mow your lawn at least once a week, keeping the height of the grass to about 25mm (1”) or 50mm (2”) during dry spells. Avoid cu ng too short as this will encourage weeds and moss to enter your lawn. In hot, dry weather your lawn will become stressed and it is advisable to reduce the amount of mowing and allow your grass to grow longer. Hot dry spells over the summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up. There are some really effec ve treatments out there that can help grass stay greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from GreenThumb. The surfactant a aches itself to the molecules in the soil to conserve any moisture,

helping to reduce the amount of watering needed. Where soil type is mainly clay, which is common in this region, the amount of water needed to keep grass green can be reduced by up to 80%. At this me of year, GreenThumb provide an Early Summer treatment which will con nue to nourish the grass plant using a controlled release fer liser. You can rest assured, we will have a solu on to transform your piece of grass, whatever the size, into a lush, green, weedfree lawn, for you to enjoy. Booking your lawn in for a treatment is easy – simply call 0116 269 4019 or find your local branch online at www.greenthumb.co.uk

Nicky Morgan MP I was delighted to be re elected as Loughborough’s MP in June. As I said at 5.10am on the day a er polling day, and as the result was announced, I love doing this job and I promise to work as hard as I can for everyone living here. I hold regular surgeries in my town centre office and try to a end as many local events as I can. Please do get in touch using the contact details on this page. One of the back drops to my campaign videos was our fabulous Queen’s Park in the centre of Loughborough. The park has recently hosted three excellent community events – Picnic in the Park and ‘Alive in Loughborough’. The Loughborough Churches Partnership 10th anniversary event was held under the ‘Alive in Loughborough’ banner. On the Saturday all our local churches held a day of music and entertainment and also showcased all the inspira onal community ac vi es they organise across the town. More details can be found here: h p://www.loveloughborough.org/projects.aspx. At least 800 people then a ended the openair church service on the Sunday. Picnic in the Park, held a week later, is now a regular Loughborough fixture with many different ac vi es and stalls. And the final event was the Great Get Together – organised to remember the words of murdered MP Jo Cox: that we have more in common than that which divides us. Thank you to everyone who arranged these brilliant events. It is these sorts of community occasions which make our corner of Leicestershire so special. I know there will be many other summer events, including school fairs, going on over the next few weeks before we get to the end of term. Just before Parliament was dissolved for the General Elec on I organised a debate in Westminster about dog on dog a acks. Following a number of dog a acks on local residents’ dogs, I pressed the Minister for effec ve legisla on to bring the rights of dogs in line with those of guide and assistance dogs. I also called for comprehensive guidance for police and local authori es to make them aware of all the powers at their disposal to tackle the issue. If you would like to read the debate, you can do so here: www. nyurl.com/luz5fy5 and if you have any experience of such a acks I would be pleased to hear from you. 01509 234 533

Recipe Cake and Bake

Serves 6

Peach Crostata

Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling

A crostata is an Italian la cetopped pie which can be sweet or savoury. This one has a fruity fresh peach filling. Serve with crème fraîche or ice cream.

1

To make the pastry, si the flour into a large bowl. Add the bu er and rub in with your finger ps un l the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. S r in the sugar, add the egg and water, then s r with a knife un l the mixture begins to s ck together.

2

Gather the dough with one hand, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few seconds un l smooth. Fla en into a round, wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

3

Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.

4

Roll out about twothirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a one pound coin and use to line a 23cm round pie dish.

5

Toss the peaches in a bowl with the sugar and cornflour then pile into the pastry case. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a 20cm circle and use a la ce pastry roller to cut slashes in the pastry (see p).

6

Brush around the edge of the pastry case with a li le water then drape the pastry circle over the filling, pulling it gently to create the la ce effect. Press the pastry edges together to seal and trim off any excess pastry.

7

Glaze the pastry with milk, then place on the hot baking sheet in the oven and bake for 35 45 minutes un l the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar.

Tip

If you don’t have a pastry la ce roller, cut the rolled out pastry into thin strips and drape over the filling.

Watch this Space – and our New Website! We’ve been plodding away with Soar Valley Life’s old website since 2012 and for a long me we’ve felt it needed upda ng. Most businesses are inundated with companies offering to build them a new web presence and, quite frankly, we didn’t know where to start. We wanted a local company who were experts in their field but wouldn’t charge the earth.

Then, at a recent business show, we met Inzar and Joey from Insight Consultancy. One thing led to another and, a er an indepth consulta on, they set about rebuilding our website which is due to go live about the middle of July. Check it out and be amazed! So, if you have finally made the decision to create a new website, or update your current one, we know that working your way through hos ng, emails, domain

names and design can be both me consuming and confusing. However, all these ‘pains’ and issues can be resolved by choosing the right provider – a provider that can empathise with you and offer a solu on that is not only clear and concise but also affordable. We believe Insight Consultancy offer all the above whilst having processes that are understandable, systema c, mely and very affordable.

When people decide to buy a property together, they will be asked by their Solicitor/Licensed Conveyancer how they wish to hold the property, usually this will be either on a ‘survivor takes all’ basis or in specific shares, and whether they have thought about a Declara on of Trust. A Declara on of Trust is a wri en agreement between the joint owners, commonly where they will own specific shares in a property. It may include several pieces of informa on, such as the amount each owner contributed towards the purchase price, their respec ve ownership shares, who is going to pay for what and also what happens if someone dies or wants to move out or there is a rela onship breakdown or dispute. Why might you need one? • Firstly, if you rely on the declara on of trust panel within the Transfer Deed, it is implied that the shares are equal at 50/50 between the par es. You may not want that. • Secondly, the survivor will not automa cally get the share belonging to the owner who dies first.

Where specific shares are owned, this will only happen if the deceased has made a Will. Otherwise the laws of intestacy (laws that govern the inheritance of property of those who die without having a Will) do not automa cally recognise unmarried couples (so called ‘common law spouses’) even if they have been together a very long me and had children together. • Thirdly, on the face of it, there is no way of showing when one party has contributed more than the other to the purchase price. If you are the person pu ng in more than your partner, say because it is a gi from your parents, or proceeds from your own sale, you may feel that it is unfair on you to lose out in the future. Speak to our Conveyancing Team for further advice on how the price of dra ing a Declara on of Trust could save you from having to pay out much higher costs in the future to solve a dispute, should one arise. Bag a Baby Bargain Loughborough Uni Students’ Union sees the area’s largest nearly new baby clothes and equipment sale Sunday 17th September Na onal Childbirth Trust’s Loughborough Branch Nearly New Sale is on Sunday 17th September at Loughborough Students’ Union from 11.30am to 1.30pm (11am entry for NCT members only). Please note that this is a change of day from previous sales, which have been held on Saturdays. Entry to the sale is £1 per adult (children free) and this money goes directly to the NCT charity. Parents can get more details online at www.nct.org.uk/loughborough NCT Nearly New Sales offer excellent quality used baby and children’s items, with clothing up to age 14. Baby products on the high street can be pricey but shoppers at the NCT sale can save up to 75% on the price of most goods. What’s more, the Loughborough sale is laid out by department so shoppers can easily find what they are looking for and compare similar items from different sellers without needing to go around lots of different stalls. Departments include clothing (arranged by gender and age), shoes, books, bedding, pushchairs, travel, toys and games. Families with baby and toddler items they no longer need can ensure they go to a good home through the sale. They’ll make some cash too as sellers keep up to 70% of the proceeds. Please check the website for more informa on on registering as a seller and whether or not spaces are s ll available; spaces usually fill up well in advance of the sale.

One way in which the NCT charity is helping families locally is through the Loughborough branch’s community fund. This sees over £500 of vouchers given away for each sale to families in need, distributed through midwives, health visitors, schools, nurseries and other local organisa ons/ professionals. The deadline for applica ons for the September sale is the end of August and the branch would welcome any applica ons. In order to apply, please email lougborough@nct.org.uk sta ng how many families you are applying for vouchers for and some informa on on their situa on, for example the number and ages of children. This helps the branch to determine what value of voucher would be appropriate. Alterna vely, health and social care professionals can apply to spend the money on behalf of families they work with if they may be unable to a end the sale themselves. Michelle Hamilton, joint branch coordinator for NCT Loughborough, says: “We have been delighted with the impact our community fund has had over the last few years and it is a wonderful way for our branch to help families on a very local level. It allows vulnerable families to spend the vouchers on the items they really want and need. Our volunteers ensure that the quality of the goods at our sales is excellent so these families and all our other shoppers can bag some real bargains. Whether you’re buying, selling or both you can be sure you’re helping to support other parents in the Loughborough area by funding NCT’s vital work.” For more informa on go to: www.nct.org.uk/loughborough

Hyundai Gets Wacky A concept car is a good way for manufacturers to gauge public reac on to a design, prior to possible mass manufacture. One example is Ford’s Probe 3, which ul mately morphed into the Sierra. It may seem strange today but, in 1981, the public were ini ally reluctant to accept the jelly mould curves of the Probe, being more used to the square lines of the then current cars. How mes and our expecta ons change. So they may seem wacky now but these concept offerings from

Hyundai may eventually be accepted as the norm in our cars. • I.Guardian is a speed ramp that extends out of the side of school buses or taxis to slow traffic as it passes. An interes ng idea and anything that makes motorists adhere to those “20 is Plenty” signs outside schools is welcome in my book. • Moving Forest is a filter unit that sits on the top of Hyundai’s electric cars and cleans the air of dust and dirt. It looks like one of those ski shaped roof boxes

and Hyundai suggest it could find a home in coaches and lorries. • Parents will relate to this idea taking inspira on from kid’s finger pain ng on misted up windows, with Sketch Book, they now breathe on an interac ve screen, do their doodling, which is then saved to the Cloud and can be accessed on other smart devices. Perhaps Sketch Book will keep the li le ones so occupied that you in the front won’t hear from the back. “Are we there yet?”

Holidays and Happiness The holiday season is supposed to be a great me, however for some it can be mega stressful. Making the most of a holiday can mean totally different things to different people. Here are a few ps to ensure you enjoy life on holiday:

• Realise it's going to be different as you aren't at home! Celebrate the differences and find out what it adds to your life. • Plan or research ahead so you know your op ons. Each member of the family might want different things, so you may do or see things you wouldn’t otherwise consider.

• Agree with each person what they want from the holiday. Is it to do nothing, sleep, read, explore or play sport? If everyone knows what they desire there are less conflicts when one wants to sleep and someone else wants to get up and go!

• Breathe... remember to just breathe and chill out. Some mes, if things get fraught, all it takes is a reminder. Maybe put a pebble or shell in your pocket and when you feel it just stop, breathe and feel glad to be on holiday.

• Maybe take it in turns to plan or suggest things for the next day.

The importance of Vitamin D are you ge ng enough? Vitamin D is very important for health and here are just a few of the reasons why: It fights infec on including colds, flu and viruses; it’s important for reducing hypertension and the risk of atherosclero c heart disease, heart a ack and stroke; it is also an immune modulator which makes it important in the preven on of autoimmune disease. It is es mated that well over half the popula on is deficient in Vitamin D and although there are signs such as having a low mood, gut problems, excessive head swea ng and aching bones the only real way to tell is to have a blood test. Op mum levels of Vitamin D are around 5070ng/ml and the best way to ensure that you get enough is to expose your skin to the sun daily either early in the morning or later in the a ernoon for about 1520 minutes but this may vary dependent on age, skin type and health. If your blood tests highlight a deficiency your doctor will prescribe supplements and the strength will vary dependent on the level of deficiency. Paula Reed

Understanding Contact Lenses There are two main types of contact lenses: • so lenses which mould to the shape of your eye • rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP lenses) which are fi ed closely to the shape of your eye and are less flexible Most contact lenses fi ed in the UK are so lenses. They are available as single use daily, fortnightly and monthly disposable lenses or more specialist lenses that are designed to last for longer. RGP lenses last longer than so lenses and are usually replaced every one to two years. This means that they may be cheaper in the long term than disposable so lenses. Like a fi ed leather shoe, RGP lenses can take a li le more ge ng used to than so lenses, and are therefore not suitable if you only want to wear lenses occasionally.

Can I swim in contact lenses? We do not recommend swimming in contact lenses. This is because there is an organism that lives in water (Acanthamoeba) than can cause a very serious infec on if it gets into your eye. Can I get my contact lenses online? Are contact lenses safe? Modern contact lenses are very safe, as long as you follow your optometrist’s advice about how to wear and look a er them and have regular checkups. To reduce the chance of infec on you should always wash and dry your hands before touching your eyes or your contact lenses. Never rinse your lenses with tap water, or store your lenses in tap water because this may cause an infec on in your eye.

As contact lenses touch your eyes they must be the right prescrip on to allow you to see clearly, and the right shape to stop them damaging your eyes. This means they must be fi ed by a qualified optometrist. Wherever you buy your lenses it is important to make sure that the lenses you are supplied with are exactly the same as the ones you have been fi ed with and it is important to have regular checkups.

Verrucae What are they? Verrucae are plantar warts that are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) highly contagious and easily enter the body through micro cuts. It is the same virus that causes warts on fingers and it thrives in moist, damp environments such as swimming pools, changing room floors and communal shower areas. Is it serious? Verrucae are harmless but can be uncomfortable and painful on weight bearing parts. Callus can form over the top of the verruca increasing the discomfort. Anyone can get verrucae but most affected are immunecompromised or those under stress. How do I know I have it? The most common appearance is of small cauliflower like growth on the soles of your feet with ny black dots. If when you pinch the sides together it is painful, you are likely to have a verruca. If you are unsure, seek advice from your local podiatrist. How do I prevent it? Wear flipflops in wet communal areas. Prac ce good foot hygiene. Treatment can be difficult – there is no one known solu on that is 100% successful and there are a lot of old wives tails about different herbal remedies that work! Most over the counter solu ons are ineffec ve so seek advice from a foot professional.

Mum’s Final Farewell She was my number one fan and my sternest cri c... In the top drawer of a kitchen cupboard Nora Johns, my (Steve’s) Mum, had kept every issue of Soar Valley Life since the very first. We’d do the quizzes together and she could usually find all the differences in Spot Ten Differences faster than me. She wouldn’t do the crossword, because she didn’t want to spoil the magazine, but she was a near genius at them and o en did them in her head. A er my Dad died in 2012, she had the house and garden upgraded; it was ge ng a bit red and needed a lot doing to it the last few years of my Dad’s life had been tough a er a fall in 2008 and he couldn’t manage too well therea er. Wherever possible Mum called upon the services of our adver sers new carpets from Carpets of Choice appliances from Appliance City plants and tools from Derry’s Nurseries and Anne’s Plants home and gi ware from Filigree Heart and much else from wherever we would roam. We have had a meal in most of the pubs which have adver sed with us, and she only once couldn’t find the robin! I used to visit her every Wednesday her house was opposite the Cuckoo Bush pub in Gotham. If you look near point 3 on our walk opposite you can see the real cuckoo bush, which the Wise Men of Gotham erected a fence around to keep the cuckoo cap ve! We’d go shopping or do an errand together and the last me we went out, we went to Cli on Cornerstone Centre for hearing aid ba eries and a birthday card for grandsoninlaw James. On the way back she talked about my editors’ le er which told of Alison, who worked for us once, who had died. Out of the blue she said, “You’re quite clever really, aren’t you?”

The Cuckoo Bush pub in 1962. The 1950s Ford Prefect parked in the middle belonged to Grandad Herbert Johns

I wanted to say, ‘Has it taken you over 60 years to find that out?’ but I refrained. We o en fetched her to our house for Sunday lunch she loved Mary’s Sunday roasts especially her gravy of which she usually took more than half! But she became unwell a er an exploratory procedure at hospital which didn’t really pinpoint anything wrong and on Friday June 9th she was taken into The Queens Medical Centre in No ngham, in a coma. She awoke and rallied on the Monday but, sadly, she couldn’t rally enough and passed away at 9 am on Tuesday 13th, just five minutes before Mary and I arrived, having been summoned by the nursing staff. Mary and I, and all our family, are very sad she’s not here anymore and we’ll all miss her terribly. Her funeral was held at Gotham Church on Friday 23rd June and we held the wake at the Cuckoo Bush pub, pictured above. Bye Mum, but I bet you’ll s ll be spo ng my typo’s!

Thread Veins and Spider Naevi Thread veins and spider naevi are closely related as both are a type of telangiectasia. They are caused by ny dilated blood vessels which are close enough to the surface of the skin to be visible and, although harmless, they can be unsightly... Thread veins are common around the nose or on the cheeks and chin. Spider naevi so called because the veins radiate from a central point like a spider’s web are o en found on the cheeks. They are also common on the legs, although these tend to be larger and deeper and may not be treatable using advanced electrolysis.

And Another Thing... Tom and the Landline by Tom Hughes

Follow Tom on Twi er @groomsdaybook

Friday a ernoon chez Hughes witnessed an event as rare as a lunar eclipse, a comet, or my son Evan buying the first round the home phone rang. The inven on of the mobile making landlines obsolete, the unfamiliar ringtone made Hannah, our youngest, shout out, “Dad? What’s that funny noise in the hall?” “That’s the home phone ringing. Listen don’t pick it up, it’ll only be someone selling …” Too late! “Dad, it’s for you!” Groaning, and much to the annoyance of Olly, my slumbering hound, I heaved myself off our sofa and padded over to the front door. “Hullo?” I enunciated unenthusias cally. “Mr Hughes? Good a ernoon, my name is Lance from Call 4 Claims. Now, did you know that the banks and building socie es have set aside millions of pounds to compensate customers for missold PPI?” “Missold PPI? What on earth is that? “ The rising cadence in his voice betraying the excitement of a poten al sale, Lance ploughed on with his script. “Well, Mr Hughes, if you’ve ever had a credit card, you may very well have been sold an insurance policy without ever being told about it.” “Well Lance,” I opined, “I wouldn’t put anything past those bankers, look at the mess they made of the country, I mean we’ve been le holding the baby and no mistake!” Just as my diatribe was reaching its zenith Sarah (My Dearly Beloved) appeared on the stairs struggling with a basket full of laundry. “Tom, who’s that on the phone?” she demanded as she nego ated her way down. “It’s Lance from where are you from again Lance?” “Call 4 Claims.” “Thank you. Call for Claims dear, apparently the banks have set aside millions of pounds to compensate customers for something called PPI?” The laundry basket landed at my feet with a thud as the phone was unceremoniously snatched from my

hand. “Sorry, not interested.” And with a slam of the receiver, my chance of unclaimed riches disappeared. “Look, instead of winding up salesmen I thought you were going to jet wash the drive?” “I’ll have to get some silver sand from B and Q.” A pause, then the outstretched hand and encouraging nod towards the door from Sarah indicated that there was nothing stopping me making a pilgrimage to that cathedral of home improvements. So, a er brushing the cobwebs from out of the inside of my Wellington boots, I connected the jet wash to the mains water and went about the monotonous task of blas ng faded pink bricks. And, dear reader, I kid you not, that task would have been completed well before ffin me had not the stream of unwanted hawkers, canvassers and campaigners not interrupted every sweep of my path. I feigned deafness; I a empted to impersonate an i nerant casual worker hired by the homeowner. A er two hours, I surveyed my handiwork. Then he arrived (and we’ve all met them): the door to door salesman who won’t take no for an answer. “Good a ernoon sir, nice job of the drive by the way, and don’t worry I’m not selling anything. Could you tell me who your electricity supplier is?” I had my

new stock answer at the ready: “Sorry mate, I rent this place.” “Okay, your landlord doesn’t pay your gas bill though, does he?”

“Tom, what’s all that stuff in your hands?” “Well, this lad turned up just now and he’s fresh out of jail and he’s trying to put his life back on track and he’s part of this scheme and…”

Hmm, I hadn’t thought of that me to act quickly. “It’s in with the rent.”

“How much were those dusters?”

My scep cal u li es advocate was having none of it, so I resorted to a quick squirt from my lance to send him on his way. Jet wash complete, Sarah called me in for tea.

“Tom! Down the precinct they’re 99p!”

Boots and paraphernalia back in the garage, I entered the porch laden with tea towels, dusters and a sink plunger.

And as the sun began se ng over the roof, to avoid any more u lity salesman, fur vely, my thoughts turned to solar panels....

“Six pounds fi y.” “Well, we can afford it.” “You know what you are Tom? A salesman’s dream.”

Pets Page By Ann Haldo Beware Of Ticks When Walking Your Dog Ticks pose a serious health risk to your dog during the summer and early autumn months, par cularly if you take them for walks through bracken and heather. If your dog has a long coat, a ck will barely be no ceable on the skin, so it’s important that you physically check their body when you finish your walk. What does a ck look like? Ticks are ny spiderlike creatures that a ach themselves to a ‘host,’ and feed on their blood. Once they start to feed, the ck increases in size and becomes more no ceable to the human eye. Although it’s temp ng to pull a ck from your dog, part of it is likely to remain under their skin which can have serious health consequences in the months that follow.

Page 48

You can buy a dedicated ck remover from your local pet shop or veterinary prac ce. Although other methods of removing cks exist, ck removers allow you to twist and pull the ck from your dog, bringing the en re body away. Why are cks dangerous to your pet? Ticks cause Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, in dogs, but signs of illness don’t commonly appear un l several months a er they have been bi en. Symptoms include: • High fever. • Loss of appe te. • Swelling of the joints. • Swollen lymph nodes. • Lethargy. Once diagnosed, a prolonged course of an bio cs can be used to fight the infec on, but some dogs may con nue to experience recurring symptoms throughout their life. www.lymediseaseac on.org.uk/about cks/ stopthe ck.co.uk/ www.peteduca on.com/ar cle.cfm?c=2+2102&aid=458

Tracing Your Family History Amongst the senior relations you may have interviewed already, there may be some with photos of various family members. Ask permission to copy them - make sure the battery in your camera or phone is well charged - and be sure to list names for everyone who they can identify for you. Remember different people may have saved different photos. Some photos may have been taken at events such as weddings so may be matched to information you already have; others might be studio portraits, carrying embossed or printed details of the photographer and possibly the town where he worked. Store this information carefully as it may help you to make sense of future findings and, if using a computer, ensure you also have back up for both images and your lists. The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.
