One Fine Summer
Every cloud has a silver lining, for sure, but you do need clouds for that, and this summer we didn’t have many of those, did we? It started, for Mary and I, on May 28th with a trip to Broadway in Worcestershire for a ride on the newly extended Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Heritage Railway from the new Broadway sta on with GCR’s Oliver Cromwell on loan to them for their Return to Broadway Steam Gala. It was in the 80’s that day! Then we went to Belfast for a few days in the first week of June and were basking in the longest spell of dry weather they had had in many years. A local taxi driver quipped, “Normally, the only thing missing in Belfast is a roof over it to keep the rain out!” Upon our return, because the weather looked set fair, we thought we’d snatch another few days in a friend’s apartment in Whitby a er our next deadline at the end of June. We visit Whitby about once a year and take the opportunity to catch up with our graphic designer Ali, and her husband Simon, who live just north of there. “We’ll have to come down to yous two next me," said Ali in her mild Auf Weidersein Pet accent (to our untrained ear). And s ll the weather held… At the beginning of August, as Ali and family were holidaying in Sherwood Forest north of Newark, we arranged to meet on our home turf. I hired a li le narrow boat from Sileby Mill, booked us in for lunch at The Waterside in Mountsorrel and, luckily, s ll the weather held. We had a great day tootling up and down our lovely namesake, the River Soar. Later that week a cousin from Australia stayed with us for a few days and we did the local sights in and around Loughborough. We took her on a diner train on a beau ful summer’s eve and showed her Queens Park on a glorious Sunday a ernoon, giving us a glimpse of what our valley has to offer through another’s eyes. Then, on Tuesday 7th August our summer came to an abrupt end with an opera on to mend Steve’s long term injured shoulder… followed by another deadline and the return of those bothersome clouds. Grrr...

New Beginnings Although autumn feels like the end of things in the garden in a way it can be a new beginning, especially where bulbs are concerned. So as you put your garden to bed don’t be downhearted, plant some bulbs knowing they will herald an end to dark winter days, bringing a welcome splash of colour to the garden when few other plants are in flower. They can be naturalised in grass, liven up your borders and are perfect for pots. If you choose the right varie es they will give you colour in the garden from late winter to early summer. The most common mistake when plan ng bulbs is not pu ng them deep
enough. Remember they should be planted at a depth of at least three mes the diameter of the bulb. Claire Jones

Beau ful Bulbs Why not make your house all the more special this winter with some colourful bowls of bulbs, perhaps with some gorgeous perfume too? You can buy readyplanted bowls of bulbs later in the year, but act now for a stunning display at a frac on of the price. The best bulbs are those described as ‘prepared’, which means they will flower well, reliably and uniformly indoors. Although o en pricier they are s ll great value, as results with standard bulbs may be unpredictable. I like to use prepared hyacinths, but I have bowls of nonprepared bulbs too. Visit your local garden centre now and you should see a good array of bulbs for sale, plus all the other things you need. Special bulb bowls are a good buy, and are available in many colours. They’re like huge soup bowls, but in plas c or china, and have no drainage holes. You can use normal flower pots, but put a fully waterproof container or saucer beneath each pot to protect your furniture. Bulb fibre or special compost formulated for indoor bulb plan ng performs be er in containers without drainage, but is more expensive, and you can use standard mul purpose compost if you wish. Hyacinths for forcing are available in many shades, but use a single colour in any one container as there is o en some varia on in flowering mes between the colours, and ideally you want all the flowers out simultaneously. Specially prepared crocus, paperwhite narcissus and some other daffodil types are also available. You can create a lowcost bowl
Page 14
with a large bag of inexpensive dwarf narcissus, such as ‘TeteaTete’. Crocuses also work well. Fill your bowl about one third full of compost for larger bulbs to one half full for smaller bulbs. Firm the compost gently and posi on the bulbs pointed end uppermost. They can be quite closely packed, but not so they touch each other or the sides of the bowl. Nestle the bulbs gently into the compost and then top up with compost so that just the noses are poking out. Water the compost lightly un l moist but not waterlogged. Cover the bowls loosely with a

Check the bowls every week or so and apply a li le more water if necessary. Bring the bowls out into the daylight once the shoots are about 23cm tall, which usually takes 35 weeks. Put them in a cool spot with plenty of natural daylight, where the shoots will con nue to grow and develop a healthy green colour; they will now need a li le more water. Put your bulb bowl in a warmer room once the flower buds start to colour up. For a really smart look, cover the compost with some moss or e a seasonal ribbon around the bowl. Tax Return Deadline 31 January 2019 It may seem too early to be worrying about the tax return deadline just yet but it really is just five months away! Once the children are back at school it won’t be long un l we are ge ng ready for Christmas and we are all aware the self assessment deadline is just around the corner once the fes vi es are over. The sooner you take your books and records to your accountant the sooner it can be booked in and completed. Ensure your records are complete with all sales/purchase invoices, bank statements for all bank accounts, stock figures and finance agreements etc included. If you leave it too late you will have less me to budget for any “unexpected” tax liability and you will also run the risk your return will not be completed on me. Don’t forget HMRC charge a £100 penalty to individuals who did not submit their return before 31 January, if you are in a partnership that could mean £300 in penal es!! Tip
Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas mark 6. Place the bu er in a bowl and beat in the garlic, mixed herbs and the zest and 1 tbsp juice from one of the lemons. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Ease the skin away from the chicken thigh por ons and gently push about 1 tsp of the herb and garlic bu er under the skin of each por on then smooth the skin back down. Place all the chicken por ons in a large roas ng n. Toss the potatoes in half the olive oil and season. Sca er around the chicken along with the rosemary sprigs. Cut the second lemon into thin wedges and nestle them in between then chicken and potatoes. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Roast in the preheated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes un l the chicken is golden and cooked though and the potatoes are crisp and tender, turning the potatoes and bas ng the chicken with the pan juices once or twice. Serve from the roas ng n with steamed green vegetables, if liked. You can use any combina on of mixed herbs for the garlic and herb bu er – thyme, parsley and oregano all go par cularly well with chicken. Or just choose one strongly flavoured herb such as tarragon.
Page 20

Tracing Your Family History To search Land Tax records, you generally need to visit the county Record Office for where your family lived. Together with earlier Window Tax records, they will give you an idea of your ancestors’ position in their community by showing where they lived, whether they were tenants or freeholders, or sometimes tenants owning a field or two, and the value of their holding. Viewing records at intervals may allow you to see prosperity increasing or falling. These records may not always survive completely for all places, so check that the Record Office you would visit holds them for the place and period you need. The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.

Na onal Savings Interest Rates Just Great Music!
The Bank of England has raised interest rates from 0.5% to 0.75% a er much specula on. Expecta ons of a strengthening economy, solid employment levels, more consumer spending and the poten al for wages to rise have all played a part in the decision. The Bank's main priority is to keep the rising cost of living known as infla on under control. It uses its key interest rate, known as the Bank rate or base rate, which is the reference point for how much banks and building socie es pay savers and charge borrowers in interest. But the products at Na onal Savings & Investment (NS&I) do
not act like normal retail savings accounts. Back in March, the returns on NS&I’s Guaranteed Income and Guaranteed Growth bonds were cut, and it has now been announced that the return on the Direct ISA will reduce from 1.00% to 0.75% from 24th September. These apparently anomalous changes are products of NS&I’s opera ng framework. As stated by Jill Walters, NS&I Retail Director, they have to ‘strike a balance between the needs of our savers, taxpayers and the stability of the broader financial services sector’. All of which means that NS&I cannot a ract too much investment.
It is essen al that enough cash is held to meet your ongoing expenditure needs, however if you have excessive amounts of cash in the bank earning around 1% interest, and the price of your shopping is increasing at over 2% each year, then the real value of your money is reducing over me. Woodgate Financial Planning (WFP) is an associated business of Moss Solicitors and are located in our head office. If you are wondering what is the best ‘plan of ac on’ for you and your savings, why not get in touch with Anna Sidat, Financial Planner at WFP on 01509 635467 who would be happy to answer your ques ons.

Nicky Morgan MP I know that planning and the huge increase in house building around Loughborough and our outlying towns and villages con nues to be a ma er of great concern. As I have previously men oned over the years a significant part of the problem is that if a local planning authority cannot demonstrate that it has a 5 year land supply then it becomes very vulnerable to losing planning appeals, even if the council has turned down the original applica on. The good news is that as at the end of July Charnwood Borough Council now has a healthy 5.93 year land supply for housing. This will strengthen the hand of the council and local residents in ensuring that housing is built where the local community impact can be managed. This doesn’t mean that more housing isn’t needed but it does mean that legi mate objec ons voiced about the impact on roads, traffic and local services will carry more weight. Over the summer many events have taken place around the Loughborough cons tuency. You may have no ced the wonderful flower boxes and hanging baskets that have gone up around the town as part of our entry into the annual In Bloom awards for which the dedicated Loughborough In Bloom team have won a succession of awards, including Gold, over the years. Armed Forces Day in June brought lots of people into Loughborough and it was a pleasure to join the Mayor and other dignitaries at the Army Reserve Centre on Leicester Road to see the unveiling of Charnwood Council’s first heritage plaque. On a similar vein it was a huge privilege to be in a endance at the new Defence and Na onal Rehabilita on Centre at Stanford Hall for its handing over to the na on in the presence of the Duke of Cambridge and Prime Minister. This coming October halfterm will see the return of the ever popular Loogabarooga fes val. We have a proud history of children’s literature locally thanks to our connec on with Ladybird books. More details can be found at www.goleicestershire.com/Loughborough/loogabaro oga.aspx Finally, this November marks the centenary of the end of the First World War and across the cons tuency there will be a number of events to commemorate the Armis ce and remember those who lost their lives. Please do visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/ww1_events where you will find up to date details of the events that will be taking place.

Scratched Cornea Just Great Music!
A scratched cornea is one of the most common types of eye injury. What is the cornea? The cornea is the clear front part of the eye. This part of the eye is packed with nerves – it has many more nerve endings than your finger ps, for example. This is why a scratched cornea (or corneal abrasion) can be very uncomfortable. However, this discomfort will only last a short me while the eye heals. What should I do if I scratch my cornea? If you are experiencing any eye pain or discomfort, or you suspect you have a corneal abrasion, you should always consult your optometrist for advice.
What causes a corneal abrasion? A corneal abrasion normally happens a er an accident or injury to the front of the eye. They are o en caused by fingernails, or an accident in the home or while gardening. Some mes, if a small piece of grit gets trapped in your eye, rubbing the eye or blinking may cause a corneal abrasion. What are the symptoms of a corneal abrasion? There are several symptoms and you may only experience a few, but they can include: • Pain, which may feel worse when you open or close your eye • A feeling that there is something in your eye or irrita on
• Your eyes watering far more than usual • Redness • Sensi vity to light • Blurred vision or loss of vision • A headache Treatment You may be given lubrica ng drops to make your eye feel more comfortable and help to keep it moist. You may be given an bio c drops or ointment to stop the abrasion becoming infected. If your vision starts to become more blurred, or if the pain and redness increase, you should get advice from your optometrist. If they are not available, go to A&E. Are you drinking enough? Did you know that one of the first signs of dehydra on is feeling red or exhausted? That’s right – not drinking enough water could be the reason your energy levels are low and you feel exhausted. Because our bodies are made up of mostly water, even small dips in H2O levels are enough to affect your metabolism. Other symptoms include dizziness or lightheadedness, headaches, dry mouth, lips, eyes and skin. If dehydra on is ongoing (chronic) it can affect your kidney func on and cause kidney stones to develop. It can also lead to liver, joint and muscle damage, cholesterol problems and cons pa on. Stay hydrated by making sure you’re drinking enough water and other fluids throughout the day. The Ins tute of Medicine suggests about 9 cups of fluids a day for women and 13 cups for men. You will need to increase this if you are on a strenuous exercise regime. If that sounds like a lot, remember that many foods, like fruits and vegetables, contain water as well. Why not try drinking more water for a week and see how much be er you feel? Paula Reed

Feet have a lot of demands made on them; in a normal day they can easily travel fi een miles. Just standing s ll creates a lot of strain on feet, so take care of them. Wearing the right shoe is important. While summer is s ll with us flip flops abound and with them, serious damage to feet. If you are on your feet a lot, you should wear well fi ng, comfortable walking shoes, with thick but flexible soles. Shoes should have a lace or strap fastening that holds the heel in place and prevents the toes from sliding into the toe box. There should be enough room at the top to allow the toes to move freely. Sports people should be aware of the lateral support the shoe provides preven ng the foot from rolling sideways (overprona on). Shop carefully big price and brand name is no guarantee. Self help • Suppor ve footwear with good fastenings rather than ‘slip on’s • Slight heel and arch support. • Alternate daily shoe wear to avoid damp and fungal infec on.

Skin Tag Removal Many people have skin tags which can be quickly and safely removed using Advanced Cosme c Procedures (ACP). These benign tumours grow to about the size of a grain of rice but can be as big as a raisin or even larger. They may be pigmented or flesh coloured and some may grow on a fleshy stalk. i.e. pedunculated. Skin tags commonly form in areas where there is fric on; where skin rubs on skin, such as in the
armpits, under the breasts, in the groin and on the eyelids. They can be a problem where jewellery or clothing rub and are common on the neck. They can even form just inside or under the nose. Whilst they are extremely common they can be distressing and, where clothing or jewellery irritates them, they can become very sore, While they may be treated for this reason most people have them removed because they consider them unsightly.
Skin tags like this can be removed by ACP leaving smooth skin once the area has completely healed.

Indoor games for wet autumn days When the summer has gone and you’re not able to get out as much with your dog, it’s important to keep them ac ve even if they’re in the house. Try these indoor games to s mulate mind and body, prevent boredom, and let your dog thrive through the we er autumn months.

Treasure Hunt It’s a good idea to play this game in a room that has carpet or other nonslip flooring so your dog doesn’t injure itself in the excitement. Hide some of their favourite treats in one or more areas of your home, and let them hunt for the ‘treasure’. If your dog is more tempted by toys, you could always replace the treats with their favourite ones. This is also a good game if you make people they know the ‘treasure’ – especially when children are involved as it keeps them entertained too.
ac vity balls in which you hide food treats. It will take some me to work out how to get to the treats, and the ac vity balls keep them physically ac ve too. Ball games If you have a long hallway, you can roll the ball along and get them to bring it back. Throwing a ball up the stairs is also a great way to give them the exercise they need without se ng foot outside. You’ll have a very red friend on your hands before long, ready to play again the next rainy day.

Originally developed in 1999 by California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) and Stanford University to provide a pla orm for educa on and space explora on; the development of CubeSats has advanced into it's own industry with government, industry and academia collabora ng for ever increasing capabili es. CubeSats now provide a cost effec ve pla orm for science inves ga ons, new technology demonstra ons and advanced mission concepts using constella ons, swarms and disaggregated systems. CubeSats provide opportuni es for small satellite payloads built by universi es, high schools and non‐ profit organisa ons to inves gate and develop space technologies.

Short Story By Jackie Brewster Just Great Music!
The BestDressed Window Cleaners in Town “Look lively,” Dave whispered to Barry as he climbed off the last rung of the ladder, “here comes trouble.” “Hey you!” The man striding towards them was Mr Byard, who considered himself a very important person at Maxspeed Sportswear. “I need a word with you both.” Dave winked at Barry and gave the sill one last cursory wipe with his chamois. “Everything alright with the windows, sir?” he asked. “Pigeons have been busy.” “Certainly.” Mr Byard seemed flustered. “Great job.” “That’s because we’re the best window cleaners for miles,” Barry smiled. “We’ve done all your office windows, and now we’re going round the front to give your recep on a good going over.” “Indeed.” Mr Byard ran his hand through his thinning hair. “I’m afraid we have a small problem.” “Why’s that?” Dave frowned. “I saw them recep on windows when we pulled up in the van, proper smeary.” Barry nodded in empha c agreement. “I don’t suppose you no ced,” Mr Byard coughed, “but we’ve got a lot of very expensive vehicles in the car park today.” “I didn’t spot that,” Dave said. “Did you Barry?” “Posh cars?” Barry scratched his head. “I wasn’t looking.” “It’s our Annual General Mee ng,” Mr Byard explained.
Page 50
“We’ve got our most important shareholders arriving in recep on.” “Business must be booming,” Dave said. “It does have the poten al to go boom,” Mr Byard grimaced. “And that’s the problem.” “Anything we can help with?” Dave said, folding up his chamois. “It’s a li le awkward,” Mr Byard flushed, “but would you gentlemen mind awfully removing your sweatshirts?” It seemed for a moment that even the pigeons fell silent. “Mary in Marke ng no ced you’re both wearing BurnSure sweatshirts, and the problem is they’re our main compe tors,” Mr Byard stu ered. There wasn’t a single person in town who didn’t know that Maxspeed and neighbouring BurnSure were bi er rivals in the luxury sportswear industry. “Fair point.” Dave nudged Barry. “We’ll whip these right off.” Each man began pulling his sweatshirt over his head. “Whoa!” Mr Byard cried, as it became clear from the flash of two hairy bellies that both men were naked underneath. “That’s actually worse!” “Sorry, sir,” Dave said. “I don’t know what else to do? We don’t carry spare clothes in the van, do we Barry?”
Barry shook his head. “We don’t – it’s a right conundrum.” “I have a solu on.” Mr Byard was used to taking control in a garment crisis. He brusquely rapped on the office window. “Mary, pass me out two of our latest sweatshirts – large size.” He turned back to Dave and Barry. “Would you mind wearing our product while you’re on our property?” “Window cleaning’s a dirty business.” Dave held up his hands. “We wouldn’t want to borrow your clobber and give it back all filthy.” “Good point.” Mr Byard’s exaspera on was reaching its peak. “You know what, just keep them.” “Only if you’re sure?” Dave said. “Mine’s an extralarge.” The window slid open and a hand, presumably belonging to Mary, passed two sweatshirts out towards them. “Proper quality garments these,” Dave said, changing into his new sweatshirt, “not like that Burn Sure rubbish.” “It’s an honour to wear it, sir.” Barry bowed as though he’d just been given a medal. “You’re welcome,” Mr Byard nodded. “I really must be going, can’t keep the shareholders wai ng.” The men waited un l he’d disappeared back inside the building. “You were right, that worked like a charm,” Barry laughed. “This top is worth a few bob.” “Remember to wear it next me we clean BurnSure’s windows,” Dave chuckled. “I’ve never had to pay for my sweatshirts once.”
“If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.” Orson Welles

The Independent Traveller’s Holiday Helpline Just Great Music!
Why do I see so many different prices for the same airline seat? Most mainstream airlines, other than the Easy Jets and Ryanairs of the world, have First Class, Business Class and Economy Class. Within these classes there are pricing classes: the same seats, same meals and same baggage allowance but each has different rules a ached in terms of can they be exchanged or refunded, can the dates be changed and if so at what charge. The airline’s revenue control ‘balances’ the revenue on the flight by opening or closing pricing classes in line with demand. There can be a wide price varia on between a cket that is fully refundable/exchangeable and one that isn’t. Travel companies like ours also have access to some special fares not normally available to the general public. These tour operator fares cannot be sold as seat only and must be sold as part of a package. The big advantage is they can be secured with a deposit only and the balance paid much closer to departure. Generally speaking, for flights other than a simple East Midlands to Paris trip, your travel professional will find you a be er deal than using the internet. Certainly this is the case if accommoda on is involved and you can speak to a real person! Also, on average, the earlier you book the be er the price of your cket. That is why we are booking so many seats for summer 2019 now! Is it safe to travel to Zimbabwe? Most Bri sh visitors will only travel in the southern half of this fascina ng country and most will only visit Victoria Falls. Without hesita on we can confirm that Victoria Falls is, and always has been, completely safe. Care should be taken when travelling to the northern parts and to large ci es, as
in all countries the trouble is normally where the popula on is dense. When we use parks and safaris in the northern parts such as the Manna Pools or Hwange Na onal Park our clients are either flown or escorted. Please go and enjoy this wonderful country. Do I need to take out travel insurance? The simple answer is YES! Travel insurance is seen by many as a waste of money and something you do not need. “I am only going to Europe and I get medical coverage under the EU.” That might be the case ll next March but even now it only covers a small por on of what good travel insurance takes care of; coverage is really split into 3 areas: pre travel, during travel and post travel. PreTravel: Covers any costs if you have a medical issue that prevents you and others within the party travelling. This important cancella on cover returns any cost that cannot be refunded. Remember that normally by 80 days before travelling you have paid in full and that money is not going to be refunded by any tour operator. During Travel: Covers things like travel delays including delayed baggage and the associated costs. It covers the cost of any emergency health treatment needed and if required the cost of an earlier flight home, even if this requires an Air Ambulance. Post Travel: You might come back from your trip with lost or damaged baggage. This could well be covered by your insurance policy. I hope this proves that good insurance is worthwhile. In the next issue we will look at how to find a good policy.

There’s a Bomb in Your Car… Just Great Music!
Would you hold your arm 5cm over an explosive device, knowing that if it went off it would probably break your arm in several places? Thought not. Yet this is done daily by drivers who hold the steering wheel at ‘11 o’clock’ with just their right arm. 1992 was when UK cars started to be fi ed with steeringwheel airbags. It’s now universal on all volume manufacture models, so most people now drive a car that, when it detects an impact at as li le as 16mph, will eject an airbag at up to 200mph!
And an ‘11 o’clock’ posi oned arm is right in the blast zone. Two stories: One factual, from my firsthand research, and another, possibly hearsay, but based on the above has some credence. Story 1 has been confirmed by paramedics a ending car accidents where the airbag has deployed, and the driver’s arm was over the steering wheel on impact. In one instance the airbag threw the driver’s arm into the roof, breaking it in several places. On another occasion, the driver’s arm was dislocated from their shoulder socket.
Story 2: A driver was involved in a lowspeed crash – that they should have walked away from – and the airbag deployed. They had their hand over the steering wheel and a large watch on their wrist. Their arm and watch impacted with their forehead, causing a brain injury. The accepted best prac ce for steering is two hands on the wheel, posi oned at either ‘quarterto three’ or ‘tentotwo’. This offers the best in car control and keeps your arms away from that bomb under the steering wheel… Makes you think doesn’t it?
