NATIONAL TOUR OF COMEDY CAPERS FOR

THE DOPPEL GANG

A new comedy play inspired by the legendary Marx Brothers embarks on a na onwide tour this autumn.

giants The Marx Brothers – Groucho, Harpo and Chico – with generous helpings of Bri sh humour and humility.

Just Some Theatre Company are the talented young bunch behind The Doppel Gang, a new comedy by Dominic Hedges which will tour 12 venues between September and November.

War wages in Europe, while back in Blighty a group of entertainers ba le to save a theatre from closure by masquerading as The Marx Brothers.

The Doppel Gang combines the wild wit of iconic comedy

As the Blitz tears through London, a hopeless theatre manager, Lombard, persuades

a desperate double act, Tommy and Cyril and not‐so‐convincing male impersonator Rachel to join him in an audacious stunt; one last roll of the dice to save his building and boost morale. The curtain is about to rise, but so are the stakes as an unprecedented series of revela ons leads to an exhilara ng chain of events. Will anyone believe they are the real Marx Brothers?

Just Some Theatre Company was founded in 2012 by actors Jake Urry and Peter Stone. Their aim was to produce professional theatre produc ons and provide workshops for young performers. Despite perhaps not being the most opportune me to start a new arts company in the UK, they have con nued to grow and develop in many ways. They have since expanded the team to include Jordan Moore

Soar Valley Life Clouds of Dust

Patricia Mattock, Leicestershire

I scrub the colour about on the paper with a piece of kitchen towel, applying it with brush-like strokes or blending it tone on tone with fingers and thumbs, building up layers which I can then scratch back into with a frenzy of fingernails; always hoping to achieve a figurative landscape with a sense of the wind through the grass, or a still life - perhaps a pot of flowers - zinging with fresh colour. My pastels are mostly Talens Rembrandt, but I recently acquired some lovely Unison ones; fabulous colours, creamy and easy to spread around, yet with enough strength for when you really need to bash them onto the paper! And then, as with any pastels, I spend my painting time in a cloud of dust - albeit a very multi-coloured one!

“A very welcoming, family friendly place, full of beautiful things. Great for a pot of tea while the children play in the garden.” 119 Main Street, Sutton Bonington LE12 5PE

Long Time Passing In 1944 Mary’s Aun e Be y began to write a diary which was to con nue for the rest of her life. When she died in 2001 she le the diaries in Mary’s care to be passed on to future genera ons. They occupy, and half fill, an oak chest that now resides in Mary’s study. Be y le Mary £1,000 in her will ‐ enough to buy her first computer ‐ and with a li le me on her hands she decided to begin the process of transcribing the diaries into Microso Word. On and off the task took over eight years to complete ‐ not surprising when you consider the diaries contain over three quarters of a million words! Deciding they really ought to be published, we spent a busy six months forma ng the word documents into manageable sec ons and searching through what seemed like mountains of old photos that would add faces and places to names and events on the pages. By April 2010 “Be y’s Diaries” were ready to print which led to Mary being featured on BBC Radio Leicester’s “Talking History”. Shortly a erwards we received a call from a certain Dusty Beesley who wanted to buy a copy. He and his wife had run a garden centre in Ravenstone for many years and had known Be y and a lot of the people she had also known. Dusty kindly offered to hold a book launch for us in his garden centre, amidst the blooms and displays of late spring. It was a resounding success and kick‐started the sales of Be y’s amazing work perfectly. Our front cover this month shows another aspect of Dusty’s life. In 2002 he built what is reputed to be the biggest hanging basket in the UK. He built it for three reasons: to commemorate the Queens Golden Jubilee, to celebrate his own Golden Wedding Anniversary and also the 50th year of Beesley’s Garden Centre. Replan ng it every year, he has raised tens of thousands of pounds for various chari es. Then, last Wednesday, we said a sad farewell to Dusty at his funeral service ‐ held in his beloved garden centre in order to accommodate hundreds of his customers and friends. And, like Be y, he will live on through his life’s work...

Bearded Iris I love bearded Iris, it is a wonderful plant for a welldrained posi on in full sun... Now is the best me to divide red old clumps which have died out in the middle. Ease the plant out of the ground with a garden fork without skewering the rhizomes. Pull the clump apart, discard older pieces from the middle, divide the healthy young material

and cut the leaves down to half their length to prevent the plant losing too much water. Work a li le well ro ed organic ma er into the soil and plant 2 or 3 of the new divisions back into the original gap. The rhizomes should lie horizontally along the ground with only the roots and lower half buried – the top half needs to be exposed to the sun or the plant will grow leaves and no owers. Cu ng back the foliage and stems of herbaceous plants that have already died back (e.g. Dicentra) is star ng to be a priority. Don't neglect hanging baskets ‐ deadheading, watering and feeding will help them last through un l autumn. Deadhead plants such as Dahlia, roses and

Dense, bushy, evergreen shrub with lance-shaped, dark green leaves to 6cm or 2 1/2 inches long. From midsummer to early autumn bears cupshaped flower clusters with golden yellow flowers, 6cms across. Grows up to 4ft tall and 5 ft wide

Gardening ps for August: Mulching

Mulching soil has three purposes. It helps to prevent the germina on of weed seeds, minimizes evapora on of water from the soil surface, and keeps plant roots cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Organic mulches, such as garden compost or well‐ro ed farmyard manure, also improve soil structure and fer lity. There are two main types of mulch: con nuous sheet mulches and loose

mulches consis ng of material such as garden compost or farmyard manure, bark chips, cocoa shells, coarse grit or gravel. In areas with severe winter cold, apply a deep, dry mulch of bracken li er, leaf mould, ash or straw to protect roots and dormant buds from freezing.

Mulches should be applied annually in spring or autumn, to soil that is moist but not waterlogged; never mulch very cold or frozen soil. For effec ve control of weeds, lay the mulch at least 2 to 3 inches deep. To provide adequate winter protec on for the roots of plants growing at the limits of their hardiness, the mulch should be 4

to 6 inches deep. A mulch should not be applied too close to the crown of a plant, since this will encourage rot and a ract pests that damage new top‐ growth. Alan Dayman is senior nuseryman at Derry’s Nurseries, Main Street, Cossington LE7 4UU Tel (01509) 812815. Open 7 days a week.

Nicky Morgan MP I have been working with Leicestershire Promo ons for some me now to support their plans for a Children’s Illustrated Literature Fes val in Loughborough and I was delighted to a end a recent launch event. The first Loogabarooga Children’s Illustrated Literature Fes val will be held between 22nd and 26th October 2015 across Loughborough, which I am sure will a ract both na onal and interna onal a en on. I am con nuing as a member of the steering group of the excellent Loughborough College Bridge to Work Scheme. As we gear up for GCSE results in the summer I think it is good to know about the support that is available for young people making their next career or study choices. The Bridge to Work scheme involves local schools, Loughborough College and employers in taster sessions, family informa on events, advice on appren ceships and courses and prac cal support such as help with interviews. It was a pleasure to invite many of the long‐standing and hardworking steering group members to Downing Street earlier this year.

Dutch Apple Pie

Serves 8

The bu ery pastry for this deep dish pie is made with a mix of self-raising and plain flours which gives it a so and cake-like texture. If you prefer a crisper pastry use all plain flour. Choose crisp sweet dessert apples such as Cox’s Orange Pippins or Discovery.

Tip

To make the pastry, si the plain and self‐ raising flours into a large bowl and add the diced bu er. Using your finger ps, rub the bu er into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. S r in the sugar and beaten eggs and mix to a so dough. Knead very lightly un l smooth then wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/ gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to pre‐heat. Roll out two‐thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line the base of a 23 cm round loose‐based fluted flan n. Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the raisins, brown sugar, cornflour and cinnamon then layer in the pastry case, pressing down gently. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into strips. Arrange in a la ce pa ern over the apples. Dab the edges of the strips with a li le water and press firmly to seal. Brush the top of the pie with milk and sprinkle over caster sugar. Place the flan case on the preheated baking sheet and bake for 35‐40 minutes un l the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream. Replace the apples with sliced pears or a mixture of summer berries such as blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.

Ar s c Networking Regular Soar Valley Life contributor Moss Solicitors built on the success of their inaugural event last year, and held their second Summer Art Spectacular on Tuesday 16th June. The occasion brought together local businesses for an evening of art, music and networking at Sock Gallery, Loughborough Town Hall. A duo from Leicestershire Jazz helped to create a relaxed atmosphere whilst guests enjoyed a glass of something sparkling as they arrived. The backdrop was an exhibi on by local art collec ve, Artspace Loughborough. The group’s theme for the exhibi on was ‘Beyond Words’, with ar sts deploying a variety of media and

styles to portray a range of subjects. Moss Solicitors used their event to support local charity Rainbows’ Hospice for Children and Young People, and Julie Macaulay, a Family Liaison Officer, gave a brief presenta on about the incredible work that they do to help families. One of the members of Artspace Loughborough, Jo Sheppard, generously donated one of her pain ngs, ‘Pembrokeshire Sunset’, as a raffle prize which was won by Aidan Reed of Aidan J Reed Estate Agents. A runner up won two ckets to a performance at Loughborough Town Hall. The raffle raised a fabulous £560 for the charity.

The event was another opportunity to showcase Moss’ free Business Review Service, which is a chance for businesses to have their opera ons reviewed from a legal perspec ve, to ensure that essen al and strategic legal documenta on is in place, for the benefit of both businesses and their owners. The event was such a success that plans are already underway for next year: if you would like to register interest on behalf of your business, contact Laura Anderson, quo ng ‘SAS SVL’. If you would like to take up the opportunity of the Business Review Service, contact Laura Anderson and quote ‘BRS SVL’. l.anderson@moss‐solicitors.co.uk

Old Wives and Ancient Greeks Mums, nurses and ‘old wives’ know the benefits of a packet of frozen peas on a bad sprain or a bruise. In fact there are wri ngs from as far back as the Ancient Greeks pronouncing the benefits of cold treatments for acute injuries. Cold drinks and baths using natural ice and snow were used in those early days before the introduc on of ar ficial ice in 1755... Loughborough CryoSpa takes this aid to healing a stage or two further relying on four basic factors to achieve a therapeu c effect: Turbulence, Temperature, Pressure and Salinity. It rehabilitates parts of the body in ways other techniques don’t or cannot. 42 jets aerate the water and the body loses heat through convec on as well as conduc on (similar to wind chill). The massage effect s mulates the

muscles and is beneficial for certain condi ons of muscle injury or strain. Cold decreases pain and muscle spasm, reducing ssue metabolism and blood flow at the start of treatment which leads to reduced swelling, bruising and easing of ght ligaments and connec ve ssue. Cryotherapy can provide significant pain relief with few side effects. Deeper immersion increases the pressure on the injury, aiding the dispersion of accumulated fluids from the site of the injury. The salinity of the water aids the healing process; higher salt concentra on has an increased drawing effect, speeding up the dispersal of the fluids around the injury. Mums, nurses, ‘old wives’ and Ancient Greeks will also tell you that salt water has a very posi ve healing and cleansing effect on cuts and wounds.

Seborrhoeic Keratosis These domed or plate-like growths tend to increase with age, hence the outdated term “senile wart”. They are not warts and, rather than being viral, are the result of excessive growth of epidermal (skin) cells...

Extensive seborrhoeic keratosis

A er removal using advanced electrolysis

Although the exact cause is not known, they tend to be more common in sunlight exposed areas. Their surface can vary from slightly rough to very hard and crusty with colour ranging from pale to very dark brown. They can be from a few millimetres to several cen metres across and some mes they can become sore or itchy.

Many people feel they are highly disfiguring and will conceal them with clothing whenever possible. Since they are usually raised, concealing those on the face with make‐up is rarely successful. At one me they could be removed on the NHS, generally by cryotherapy (freezing), but this is now very rare

as these benign growths are considered only to be a cosme c issue, not a medical one. Advanced electrolysis is an excellent treatment for removal of these blemishes and generally leaves li le or no evidence of the defect. Once healing is complete the skin is flat and so .

Reflexology as Effec ve as Pain Killers

A study at the University of Portsmouth found that people felt about 40% less pain and could stand pain for about 45% longer when using reflexology as a method of pain relief... Par cipants were asked to submerge a hand in ice water. In one session they were given reflexology before submersion and in another session they believed they were receiving pain relief from a Tens machine ‐ which was not actually switched on. Dr Carol Samuel, a trained reflexologist who carried out the experimental procedures as part of her PhD studies, said it was the first me this therapy had been scien fically tested as a treatment for acute pain. She said the results suggested that reflexology could be used to complement conven onal drug therapy in the treatment of condi ons associated with pain ‐ such as osteoarthri s, backache and cancers. At Reed Wellbeing I am seeing more and more people suffering from chronic pain ‐ in par cular back and neck pain. As a Member of the NHS Directory of Complementary and Alterna ve Prac oners I am ge ng an increased number of referrals from doctors and other medical professionals. The benefits have obviously been recognised... Paula Reed

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Tom Saves The Planet Last Tuesday morning I drew back our bedroom curtains and watched bleary-eyed as the summer wind sent plas c bo les, newspapers and Dominos pizza cartons swirling into my neighbour’s gardens. Cursing the li er louts who had blighted The Avenue, I turned to my slumbering beloved and said, “Sarah, what’s with all the rubbish outside? Should I ring the council?” From under the duvet came the muffled reply, “What day is it?” “Tuesday. Why?” My Dearly Beloved suddenly sprang from the matrimonial divan and stood frozen on our 80% wool twist, deep in thought. “Yesterday was a bank holiday...Tom, is Mrs Murphy out the front?” “Yes, why?” The look of horror on Sarah’s face said it all. Clasping our hands to our faces, we both screamed together: “The bins!” Time was of the absolute essence. “Tom, what are you doing?” “I’m er, looking for my other sock.” “Never mind socks, just go down as you are! There isn’t me!” “In my jimjams? Why can’t I get dressed?”

Page 42

“Because... you are a man, you don’t care what people think. Now go! And don’t wake your li le nephew.” Heartened that my sartorial insouciance gave me licence to roam the streets half naked, I leapt quietly down the stairs, through the kitchen and out onto the pa o where lay the dreaded recycling receptacles. Dropping the waste food bin (eugh) onto the cardboard bin, I stuck the one for plas c bo les under my arm and ran towards the front door. I made it just in me to see the pink recycling lorry meandering away down The Avenue. Oh well, maybe we could just wait un l next week? The bang from the window above told me that wasn’t an op on. Along the road I limped, hitching

the boxes up onto my shoulders as bo les and ns cla ered down around me. “Mr Hughes? You’ve dropped something!” Mrs Murphy, aggressively sweeping her designated part of the pavement, shook her head as I staggered on, cursing my burden of domes c detritus. Up ahead, a swarm of ta ooed bin men swung plas c boxes in and out of the open‐sided van. Eventually, I caught up with the happy band of council employees at the end of The Avenue. Triumphantly, I dropped my containers at one of the Recycle Opera ve’s feet. Ignoring me completely, he joined up with his pals as the lorry trundled out of my road. And there I remained, standing in my pyjamas on the corner of The Avenue and Harrington Drive, smelling of stale milk.

Undeterred I pressed on, managing to barge my way past the lorry to dump my bins at the feet of a ta ooed Hell’s Angel in a hi‐viz vest. “Can you empty my bins, please?” Giant Haystack’s surly half brother gave me a stare and then with his massive paw began li ing up my receptacles. Thank goodness for that, now I could end this nightmare, go home and tweezer the gravel out of my feet. Wrong! The black bin crashed an inch away from my foot, unemp ed. “What’s the ma er?” “There’s a n can in your cardboard box bin.”

“Did you know that in China, a new coal‐fired power sta on comes online every six months, so I don’t think one n…” “Sorry sir, I can’t take your bin now, I’ve put a s cker on it.” I looked down. On the side of the container was now stuck a bright yellow note – “Incorrectly Packed Bin”. Giant Haystacks shrugged his shoulders as he and his lorry rolled down Harrington Drive. The sky darkened, commuters stared. There was nothing le for it. The walk of shame awaited. I carried my s ll‐full bins back home.

Mrs Murphy shook her head as Sarah opened the door, took one look at my burden, then turned on her heel and went back inside. We didn’t speak un l lunch. Billy, my li le nephew, was sat at the kitchen table mashing his eggy soldiers as I shuffled mournfully towards the pa o. “Uncle Tom, when I grow up I want to be a bin man.” “Why on earth would you want to be a bin man?” “Well, you get to wear a cool hi‐ viz jacket, you get a good pension, and you only have to work one day a week....” Follow Tom @groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

The Naked Eye Planets August: Saturn is the sole bright planet in the early evening sky se ng about 11.30 pm. You’ll find the ringed planet in the constella on of Libra and is the brightest of the two objects in the south‐west, the other being the red giant Antares. If you have a telescope you’ll see the rings of Saturn in a splendid aspect. Mars rises at about 4 am, and becomes prominent during the month as the Sun rises later. Venus reappears beaming at mag ‐ 4.2 during the last few days of August. Mercury and Jupiter are lost in the Sun’s glare throughout August.

Are We Not Alone? An ar st’s impression of Earth (le ) and Kepler 452B (right) which is the first planet yet discovered that could be temperate enough to sustain life. NASA announced on July 23rd this year that the Kepler space telescope, which was launched in March 2009, had discovered an earth‐like rocky planet that orbits a G type sun. The star Kepler 452 is a sun‐like star that wanders through the cosmos 1,400 light years from Earth. It has the same surface temperature as our own sun and nearly the exact same energy output. Ul mately, both our sun and Kepler 452 are G type yellow dwarfs. This means that Kepler 452’s habitability zone (the area surrounding a star in which liquid water could theore cally exist) is nearly iden cal to our own sun’s. And ‐ here’s the interes ng bit ‐ in this zone there is a planet that orbits in a path that is nearly iden cal to Earth’s ‐ it falls in almost the exact same place as Earth does in our own solar system. For more informa on visit: www.fromquarkstoquasars.com

September: Saturn can be seen at Mag + 0.7 low down on the south‐ west horizon in the constella on of Libra and will set at around 9.45 pm. Venus becomes our brilliant morning star this month and speeds upwards in the dawn sky. By this month’s end she rises almost 4 hours before the Sun and shines magnificently at ‐ 4.4 magnitude. As the month progresses, through an op cal aid ‐ binoculars or small telescope ‐ you’ll see the crescent fill. Mars lies to the le of Venus at 300 mes fainter and rises just before 4am in Cancer in early September and passes into Leo by the end. Brilliant Jupiter follows close behind Mars on the eclip c

plane (magnitude ‐ 1.6) rising at 4.30 am by the 31st. October: Saturn in Libra lies low in the south‐west a er sunset and disappears into the twilight glow by the month’s end. Brilliant Venus rises at 3 am in Leo and beams magnificently at ‐ 4.3. Mars follows close behind, rising at 3.45 am and is 250 mes fainter at + 1.7 and then 3/4s of an hour later Jupiter rises at ‐ 1.6. On the 9th of October you’ll see Venus adjacent to Leo’s brightest star Regulus with the crescent Moon close by. Mercury makes its best morning appearance this year low in the east, increasing in brightness from + 0.4 on the 11th to ‐ 0.9 at the month’s end.

Before Treatment

A er Treatment

• Itching or scratchy eyes • Sore eyes • Redness and inflamma on • Dry eyes • Eye rubbing If so you could be suffering from blephari s. This is a long term inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the lid and base of the eyelashes. Anyone can get blephari s but the prevalence increases with age since as we get older we make fewer natural an bodies in our tears. As the eyelids can be difficult to keep clean, overgrowth of bacteria, biofilm, scurf and debris can accumulate over the years and the toxins released from bacteria

can cause irrita on and subsequently damage the eyelids and tear glands.

The Procedure

Inter Eyecare now provide the most up to date treatment available to alleviate this troublesome condi on. The procedure is called BlephEx and is en rely painless , using patented and revolu onary

equipment which cleans along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfolia ng your eyelids. The procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes, is well tolerated and is typically repeated at 6 monthly intervals if needed. If you would like a consulta on or to find out more call Vinesh or Tanni at our Rothley House Prac ce on 0116 319 2800.

Hobbies By Kate McLelland Are you Birding, Twitching or Watching? In the late 1980s the arrival of a ny American songbird (blown off course during its annual migra on) in Larkfield, Kent, led to a mass-mobilisa on of the na on’s bird lovers. Over the course of several days 2500 “twitchers” crowded into the small Tesco car park that the golden-winged warbler had chosen as its temporary home. In the 1980s a twitcher (the term for someone who is willing to travel many miles in order to see a rare bird at first hand) would need to rely on radio or TV reports, or home phone calls from fellow enthusiasts, in order to learn about a rare bird’s visit. Now, thanks to mobile communica on, the news can be spread within seconds of the first sigh ng. Just this year 500 people appeared on a Norfolk beach in a ma er of hours a er a rare citril finch ‐ normally only found in alpine areas of Europe – was first observed. Such devo on to searching out rare sigh ngs means that twitchers o en find themselves in the media spotlight, but not all bird hobbyists are twitchers. Twitching is just one aspect of a pas me that’s surprisingly broad and diverse, with ac vi es ranging from a single individual recording birds in their local area (usually defined as a “bird‐ watcher”) to members of well organised groups who come together to learn everything they can about bird species, including their nes ng habits, environmental usage and migra on pa erns.

Page 46

These serious hobbyists are known as “birders” and some even travel the world, taking part in compe ve events. The Royal Society for the Protec on of Birds (RSPB) is the UK’s leading bird charity and it has done much to protect endangered species and promote bird welfare. The society’s “Big Garden Birdwatch”, which started over 36 years ago, has become an important annual event across the country: encouraging householders to contribute to research so the RSPB can record changes in bird popula ons. You can sign up for the Big Garden Birdwatch by going to the RSPB website (www.rspb.org.uk). Alterna vely you may prefer to join one of the society’s local groups (enter a search for “Local Groups” on their website to find an A‐Z list). Run by volunteers, these groups provide an opportunity for members to learn more about birds and wildlife and take part in talks, walks and fundraising events.

Birding UK (www.birding.uk.com) also provides informa on on a range of groups you can join, including “Birding Buddies”, “Bird Photographers”, “Bird Ar sts” and even “Birding Bikers”. If you’re just ge ng started as a bird‐watcher you’ll find a range of mobile phone apps to help you iden fy birds and record sigh ngs. Ranging in price from .69p to £12.99, some even provide examples of birdsong to help with iden fica on but care should be taken when playing recorded birdsong in the natural environment, par cularly at mes when birds are nes ng. Whether you’re a simple “bird‐ watcher” or a dedicated “birder” or “twitcher” you can be confident that you’ve chosen a hobby that will always offer interest, excitement and fresh challenges. As climate change con nues to affect the natural environment ‐ altering breeding and migra on pa erns ‐ it’s good to know that keen observers are con nually monitoring the na on’s birds, recording and passing on vital informa on that will help preserve these precious popula ons well into the future.

Graham Proud recommends... In the 16th century, the Bavarians passed a purity law which decreed that only malted barley, hops, and yeast could be used in brewing. It was likely an a empt to keep wheat in the bakery rather than the brewery, but it didn’t work.

Wheat beer – brewed with a mixture of wheat and malted barley – remained popular in Bavaria and northern Europe un l the post‐war period, when it started falling out of favour. It was seen as an old man’s beer and the fact that it was naturally cloudy didn’t help.

By the late 1970s it seemed that German wheat beer styles were in irreversible decline. Then a miracle happened. Students rediscovered it. It had retro chic, it was cheap and suddenly it was popular again. In the Belgian town of Hoegaarden, which had once had several wheat beer breweries but by the 1960s had none, a young revivalist called Pierre Celis started brewing it again and his version, too, took off. Hoegaarden at 4.9% abv is a pale lemon colour and cloudy to the point of opacity. When Celis brewed it he added orange peel and coriander; now it belongs to the mul na onal brewer AmBev there’s li le trace of them either on nose or palate. Instead it’s

grassy and light‐bodied, and with its low CO2 content and lack of hop bi erness it’s eminently quaffable. Erdinger from Bavaria at 5% is equally pale and cloudy, somewhat spicier and with an almost salty dryness. Again, hop character and carbona on are low, and there’s a hint of bubblegum in the finish. As mass‐produced interna onal brands both are short on wheat character; but either would make a splendid accompaniment to a summer barbecue. By Ted Bruning

Pets Why you mustn’t leave your dog in a hot car Leaving your dog in a hot car with li le ven la on makes it prone to heat stroke in a ma er of minutes. Dogs’ extreme sensi vity to heat means that even if you have le the windows open and provided water, their wellbeing is at serious risk.

Heat stroke occurs when the dog becomes unable to cool itself down. Excessive pan ng and red gums are signs of overhea ng, but if you see a dog that is also vomi ng or displays a lack of coordina on, you need to act quickly.

Page 52

What to do in the case of heat stroke • Contact a vet straight away • Offer the dog cool rather than cold water, in small amounts • Move them into the shade • Wrap in cool damp cloths, par cularly the head The use of cool water is an important factor as opposed to water that is too cold, otherwise you could send the dog into a state of shock. Why are dogs so sensi ve to heat? Dogs are not able to release heat through their skin as humans do – they cool down by pan ng, and also via their nose and the pads on their feet. As a result, irreparable damage to internal organs occurs

very quickly when they overheat, and many dogs do not recover. Short‐nosed breeds including pugs and bulldogs are par cularly suscep ble to heat stroke, as are overweight dogs. Even on a cloudy day, they may struggle to cool themselves down. h p://dogs.about.com/od/ dogandpuppyhealth/qt/ heatstroke.htm h p://www.thekennelclub.org. uk/our‐resources/kennel‐ clubcampaigns/ dont‐cook‐your‐dog/ By Ann Haldon

Portrait of an Ar st Paul Atchinson, by his own defini on, is a transport ar st. I have admired his work for a number of years and was fortunate to meet him in May at The Gallery in Su on Bonington... Paul’s pain ngs evoke a me and a place all but lost in the mists of memory yet brought back to life with his talent for detail and composi on. I asked him if Soar Valley Life could use one of them as a front cover ‐ I par cularly liked the one of the ice cream van below. It would have been perfect for a summer edi on, and we did try very hard to make it fit. But the orienta on was wrong and with too much cropping it would have been spoiled ‐ so last month we used instead the one of a tram at Leicester’s clock tower. Looking at the original pain ng of the ice cream van, which is on display at The Gallery, I could just about taste the ice cream on my tongue and feel the sand between my toes. Good art transports you away to somewhere in your imagina on, allowing you to iden fy with your own experiences. And Paul’s own defini on of himself as a transport ar st cks this box perfectly! He grew up in the same era as me and in the same county. As a young train spo er I’d o en be found on No ngham’s Victoria and Midland Sta ons or hanging around Colwick shed ‐ places that now serve as a back drop to some of Paul’s railway pain ngs. His interest in drawing started at school. He did well in technical drawing but admits to being nothing out of the ordinary as an ar st back then. He joined the police force as a cadet at 16 and re red about 20 years ago. His talent emerged on joining an evening

art class whilst he was working in Harrogate. When he returned to No ngham in the 80s he honed his skills s ll further at Bulwell Art Club, becoming a full me ar st in 1996. He has been commissioned by many transport companies including Barton's buses, Po eries Motor Transport and Metrolink in Manchester. He has commemorated various anniversaries with a pain ng or montage and was ar st in residence at the Crich Tram Museum in Derbyshire. He’s travelled the length and breadth of the UK promo ng his art at shows and fairs. Besides hanging on a wall, Pauls art can also be enjoyed on gree ngs cards, mugs and jigsaws. Some of his commissions have involved subjects other than moving machines ‐ there are some wonderful pain ngs to be found on his website of cats, dogs and even guinea pigs. So, I asked, “What is it about someone that makes the difference, that allows them to produce something special?” Paul answered, “I o en see things a li le differently to the commissioner. I record an atmosphere in a context and then tweak that to make it memorable.” You can view his work at The Gallery in Su on Bonington ‐ details on page 7 ‐ or online at: www.paulatchinson.co.uk Why not try your luck in our word search compe opposite?
