Horrific news stories and images unfolding on every media pla orm; the worst atroci es and human failings spread thick on page and screen. Dwell too long or look too closely and we could be consumed ‐ filled with equal and opposite fundamental hatred, fuelled by confusion, anger and ignorance rendering us as incapable of thinking straight as the bigots that do us harm. But, it is the most amazing me in human history if we count our blessings and advantages. And running deep in every strand of DNA in all living things is the ability to absorb from their surroundings and to make the best of what’s available. Mary and I a ended a funeral service yesterday of an old family friend of Mary’s parents whom I’d met for the first me in 2009 at Carnforth railway sta on. (Incidentally ‐ where Brief Encounter was filmed). We’d later stayed at his home in North Lancashire for a few days, to find that here was a man, a widower now, yet full of generosity of spirit and humour, making the best of what he had and living a full life at the age of 88. The weather was beau ful yesterday, the blue sky, warmth and sunshine at odds with feeling the loss of a friend. But why should it be at odds I wondered? The church was packed and the ‘do’ a erwards was at a lovely country hotel bordering on the Lake District where Mary and I had enjoyed a splendid meal with him in 2011. All his old pals were there, together with his daughters, his wider family and more distant friends. You could say he was a lucky man, having lived life to the full ‘ l he was 92, and from the evidence presented in his eulogy he was truly blessed. But I reckon his secret, his zest for life if you like, was that gi we all possess if we but knew it ‐ it’s in our DNA ‐ that wonderful a ribute of making the very best of what has been given. Life goes on...

Bearded Iris I love bearded Iris, it is a wonderful plant for a welldrained posi on in full sun... Now is the best me to divide red old clumps which have died out in the middle. Ease the plant out of the ground with a garden fork without skewering the rhizomes. Pull the clump apart, discard older pieces from the middle, divide the healthy young material

and cut the leaves down to half their length to prevent the plant losing too much water. Work a li le well ro ed organic ma er into the soil and plant 2 or 3 of the new divisions back into the original gap. The rhizomes should lie horizontally along the ground with only the roots and lower half buried – the top half needs to be exposed to the sun or the plant will grow leaves and no owers. 'Anthony Waterer' is an upright deciduous shrub with narrowly lanceolate leaves, often irregularly variegated with cream and pink, and domed clusters of deep rosy-pink flowers in late summer

Gardening ps for July: Keeping everything going longer

This part of the summer is lovely. The veg plot will be in overdrive and there are some delicious fruits cropping too. But some mes your beloved flower beds and borders, pots and planters can have a dis nct mid‐summer‐flop. How can you keep them looking on top form for as long as possible? Regular feeding and watering is essen al, par cularly for anything growing in a container. O en crammed into a fairly small space and with compost whose fer liser content is pre y well used up a er a few weeks, by July plants in pots can be close to starving if you’ve not fed them regularly. I would s ll feed herbaceous perennials and annuals growing in open ground too, but don’t feed shrubs as these could be encouraged to put on new growth which will not be toughened up enough by the me winter comes. A tomato feed with a high potash level works well for anything that you grow primarily for the flowers. Deadhead regularly, both the faded flowers and if necessary remove the flower stem too. A pair of sharp scissors makes for the quickest and neatest job. Do this as soon as the flower starts to

deteriorate so that no energy whatsoever is used to form seed heads. Give perennials a trim using scissors or shears as soon as their flowering period is over. Follow it with a good feed and you can o en encourage a second, later flush of flowers. Alan Dayman is the senior nurseryman at Derry ’s Nurseries, Sileby Road, Cossington LE7 4UU Tel (01509) 812815. Trees are the oldest and largest living organisms on our planet. Today many of our na ve trees are under threat due to a number of factors including the growth in interna onal trade of trees and plants and the effects of climate change… Dutch elm disease became prevalent during the 1970s and has to date killed over 60 million trees. Ash dieback was first spo ed in Poland in 1992 and has been spreading west ever since. In 2012 it was found in the South East of the UK on imported nursery trees; as a fungus spread by the wind it could devastate the UK’s 80 million ash tree popula on. Canker and leaf minor have been affec ng horse chestnut trees to the extent that conkers are now smaller; many believe horse chestnuts are unlikely to be a feature of the Bri sh landscape in the future.

The English oak is also under threat; acute oak decline has been affec ng our na ve oak species for around 20‐30 years and in London and the South East the oak processionary moth has become established. The moth caterpillars’ ny hairs contain a toxin which can lead to itching skin lesions, sore throats, breathing difficul es or eye problems. OPM caterpillars are most easily recognised by their dis nc ve habit of moving about in late spring and early summer in nose‐to‐tail processions. Ben Edmonds of Canopy Tree Services says, “If you have concerns about your trees we can visit and give free advice. As a tree owner you have a duty of care to ensure that your trees cause no harm. We can undertake tree surveys and all types of tree surgery from hedge trimming to felling of large trees and site clearance. We will obtain the relevant permissions to fell the tree and recycle the waste in an environmentally friendly manner.

An Oak tree in decline suffering dieback

We can also grind out the stump so the area is returned to good use. Beware of cowboys who call themselves ‘tree surgeons’ ‐ it is difficult to tell the rouges from the professionals. A sure way is to use an ARB Approved Contractor who has been assessed by the Arboricultural Associa on, the na onal tree‐care industry body: www.trees.org.uk

Nicky Morgan MP I have been working with Leicestershire Promo ons for some me now to support their plans for a Children’s Illustrated Literature Fes val in Loughborough and I was delighted to a end a recent launch event. The first Loogabarooga Children’s Illustrated Literature Fes val will be held between 22nd and 26th October 2015 across Loughborough, which I am sure will a ract both na onal and interna onal a en on. I am con nuing as a member of the steering group of the excellent Loughborough College Bridge to Work Scheme. As we gear up for GCSE results in the summer I think it is good to know about the support that is available for young people making their next career or study choices. The Bridge to Work scheme involves local schools, Loughborough College and employers in taster sessions, family informa on events, advice on appren ceships and courses and prac cal support such as help with interviews. It was a pleasure to invite many of the long‐standing and hardworking steering group members to Downing Street earlier this year. July and August mean that the House of Commons reaches the Summer Recess (which also allows much needed maintenance, as we have been reading about, to take place in the Palace of Westminster!) and MPs are able to spend me on cons tuency visits in a slightly less fran c way than usual. I am looking forward to a ending a gradua on ceremony at Loughborough University as well as a number of local schools before the end of term and mee ng local businesses. Finally I have been asked a number of mes about the state of the cu ng of our grass verges. Cu ng in Loughborough will e in with prepara ons for this year’s Loughborough in Bloom judging. The planned schedule of grass‐cu ng for our area can be found on the Leicestershire County Council website at: h p://www.leics.gov.uk/grasscu ng I have discussed this issue with the Chief Execu ve and Leader of the Council. If you have concerns about the cu ng please do raise it with the County Council’s Customer Services team.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35‐45 minutes or un l the sponge is golden and springy to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave the cake to cool in the n for 10‐15 minutes then carefully li it out of the n using the baking paper up the two sides of the n. Cut into 9 squares and serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar. Top each square with scoop of ice cream and decorate with a sprig of lemon balm. Replace the apple slices pears or try peeled and segmented oranges for a lovely citrus flavoured dessert.

Ar s c Networking Regular Soar Valley Life contributor Moss Solicitors built on the success of their inaugural event last year, and held their second Summer Art Spectacular on Tuesday 16th June. The occasion brought together local businesses for an evening of art, music and networking at Sock Gallery, Loughborough Town Hall. A duo from Leicestershire Jazz helped to create a relaxed atmosphere whilst guests enjoyed a glass of something sparkling as they arrived. The backdrop was an exhibi on by local art collec ve, Artspace Loughborough. The group’s theme for the exhibi on was ‘Beyond Words’, with ar sts deploying a variety of media and

styles to portray a range of subjects. Moss Solicitors used their event to support local charity Rainbows’ Hospice for Children and Young People, and Julie Macaulay, a Family Liaison Officer, gave a brief presenta on about the incredible work that they do to help families. One of the members of Artspace Loughborough, Jo Sheppard, generously donated one of her pain ngs, ‘Pembrokeshire Sunset’, as a raffle prize which was won by Aidan Reed of Aidan J Reed Estate Agents. A runner up won two ckets to a performance at Loughborough Town Hall. The raffle raised a fabulous £560 for the charity.

The event was another opportunity to showcase Moss’ free Business Review Service, which is a chance for businesses to have their opera ons reviewed from a legal perspec ve, to ensure that essen al and strategic legal documenta on is in place, for the benefit of both businesses and their owners. The event was such a success that plans are already underway for next year: if you would like to register interest on behalf of your business, contact Laura Anderson, quo ng ‘SAS SVL’. If you would like to take up the opportunity of the Business Review Service, contact Laura Anderson and quote ‘BRS SVL’. l.anderson@moss‐solicitors.co.uk

WORLD CRAFT BEERS Sponsored by

THE FREE TRADE INN

Graham Proud recommends... In the 16th century, the Bavarians passed a purity law which decreed that only malted barley, hops, and yeast could be used in brewing. It was likely an a empt to keep wheat in the bakery rather than the brewery, but it didn’t work.

Wheat beer – brewed with a mixture of wheat and malted barley – remained popular in Bavaria and northern Europe un l the post‐war period, when it started falling out of favour. It was seen as an old man’s beer and the fact that it was naturally cloudy didn’t help.

By the late 1970s it seemed that German wheat beer styles were in irreversible decline. Then a miracle happened. Students rediscovered it. It had retro chic, it was cheap and suddenly it was popular again. In the Belgian town of Hoegaarden, which had once had several wheat beer breweries but by the 1960s had none, a young revivalist called Pierre Celis started brewing it again and his version, too, took off. Hoegaarden at 4.9% abv is a pale lemon colour and cloudy to the point of opacity. When Celis brewed it he added orange peel and coriander; now it belongs to the mul na onal brewer AmBev there’s li le trace of them either on nose or palate. Instead it’s

grassy and light‐bodied, and with its low CO2 content and lack of hop bi erness it’s eminently quaffable. Erdinger from Bavaria at 5% is equally pale and cloudy, somewhat spicier and with an almost salty dryness. Again, hop character and carbona on are low, and there’s a hint of bubblegum in the finish. As mass‐produced interna onal brands both are short on wheat character; but either would make a splendid accompaniment to a summer barbecue. By Ted Bruning

Liver or Age Spots Liver Spots or Solar Len go are generally associated with age, exposure to the sun and/or sunbed use. These areas of pigmenta on range from pale to very dark brown and are common on the face, arms, hands, neck, chest and shoulders. On those with thinning hair, they can also develop on the scalp. They normally increase in number and size a er a person reaches the age of forty, hence the less fla ering term “Age Spots”.

For many of us, slapping on founda on is the last thing we fancy doing on a summer’s day. But if you s ll want some coverage, try a Blemish Balm (BB). Similar to a nted moisturiser, but with added benefits, a BB cream hydrates and primes your skin, while helping to even out your complexion. Pacifica Alight Mul Mineral BB Cream is a steal at just £16.99 from www. naturisimo.com. It’s perfect for crea ng that fresh‐faced glow.

You need to protect your skin from the sun all year around, but it’s even more vital in the warmer months. If you suffer from eczema, psoriasis or other skin complaints, you may want to opt for a natural sunscreen, that’s less likely to irritate your skin. Neal’s Yard Remedies Chamomile & Aloe Vera Moisturising Sun Lo on gets our vote. It’s 100% natural, has an SPF of 25, and offers both UVA and UVB protec on. Usually, it’s best to buy a separate facial sun cream, as most body creams are quite greasy, leading to spots and skin irrita on. However, this lo on is gentle enough to be used all over, and is packed with nourishing ingredients, such as shea and coconut oils.

Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Bricks are a bit of a cult favourite, and the new Brightening Bricks (£34) look set to become just as popular. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a new travel washbag to house all your new goodies, we’re lus ng a er the Orla Kiely Large Washbag in Floa ng Flower, which has three separate compartments and a hook to hang it up. Reflexology as Effec ve as Pain Killers

A study at the University of Portsmouth found that people felt about 40% less pain and could stand pain for about 45% longer when using reflexology as a method of pain relief... Par cipants were asked to submerge a hand in ice water. In one session they were given reflexology before submersion and in another session they believed they were receiving pain relief from a Tens machine ‐ which was not actually switched on. Dr Carol Samuel, a trained reflexologist who carried out the experimental procedures as part of her PhD studies, said it was the first me this therapy had been scien fically tested as a treatment for acute pain. She said the results suggested that reflexology could be used to complement conven onal drug therapy in the treatment of condi ons associated with pain ‐ such as osteoarthri s, backache and cancers. At Reed Wellbeing I am seeing more and more people suffering from chronic pain ‐ in par cular back and neck pain. As a Member of the NHS Directory of Complementary and Alterna ve Prac oners I am ge ng an increased number of referrals from doctors and other medical professionals. The benefits have obviously been recognised... Paula Reed FINALIST

New Marriage Allowance At the start of the 2015/16 tax year the new Marriage Allowance came in to force and is available to married couples or those in a civil partnership. A person earning less than £10,600 can transfer up to £1,060 of their personal allowance to their spouse or civil partner. The allowance can be used by the recipient if he or she does not pay more than the basic rate of income tax. The transfer will increase the recipient’s personal allowance up to £11,660 which could mean an income tax saving of £212 in the current tax year. To receive the new Marriage Allowance you must register your interest on the Gov.uk website. HM Revenue & Customs will then email you with details of what you need to do next. If you are successful the transfer will then take place every year un l you cancel it or your circumstances change. If you are employed, your tax code will eventually be changed to 1166M or if you are self‐employed the allowance will be applied when you submit your tax return. Caroline Dinsmore

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes I knew from Sarah’s desperate phone call that the situa on was urgent. “Tom, has it arrived or not?” “Yes, the courier’s just been.” “Right, let’s just hope it fits. We have to be there for seven!” The Chairman’s annual dinner dance is the highlight of our social calendar (the other important dates being Christmas and my Mum coming for Sunday tea) so what to wear is a stress known only to the fairer sex. I on the other hand have no such conundrum, needing only to dust down my penguin suit (although some mes the previous twelve months over‐indulgence can result in a fight to the death with the trousers). So my problems were as nothing compared to Sarah’s. Rushing in from work, she ran upstairs to our bedroom, where on the bed lay her nemesis ‐ the ball gown. I was half way up the stairs when an ear piercing scream froze me to the spot. “Tom!” I burst in to see my beloved stuck inside an oversized meringue. “They’ve sent the wrong dress!” Immediately I went into damage limita on mode. “It’s not too bad. Here, can I pin it?” “Since when did you become a seamstress? It’s ok, I’ll just wear the black one. Thank goodness you never stuck it on eBay.”

Page 42

My grimace gave it away. “... Tom?” “If it’s any consola on, my feedback score is excellent.” “Right well that’s it. I’m not going. I can’t go.” “I’ll tell you what, let’s ask our daughter.” I shouted Hannah, our sassy, fi een year old fashionista. My eyes bored into her as I nodded furiously and said, “Doesn’t that dress look lovely on your Mum?”

As Hannah rolled her eyes I heard Sarah call from the bedroom. “Right that’s it. I’m not going, you can go on your own.” Disaster loomed. I had to think quick. “Look, let’s see what Debi says.” Debi was Sarah’s best friend and my last hope. Hurriedly, I took some pictures. “You could at least smile darling.” “Listen David Bailey, there isn’t me.” With Sarah in the bathroom, I seized my chance as Debi’s messages pinged through.

Hannah, glancing up momentarily from her smartphone, took one look at her Mother and said, “Have you not got anything else?

“Sorry hon, that dress is awful!” (delete) “Is there nothing else? What about that gorgeous black ‐ ” (delete).

What about that black one?”

Beep! The taxi arrived.

Dragging the Apple of my Eye out onto the landing I said, “Word of advice, don’t ever apply to be a diplomat, will you?”

Bustling Sarah into the back of the cab, I handed over her phone. “Debi hasn’t replied, but I’m sure she loved it.”

Outside the hotel, Sarah made a final adjustment to her dress as she looked me up and down. “Have those trousers shrunk or something?” “Let’s just go in shall we?” Shuffling into the lobby, we were greeted by a gli er ball on legs ‐ The Chairman’s Wife. “Mrs Hughes, don’t you look... nice?” “There you go, she loves it”, I whispered through my fixed grin. “You’ve a lot to learn about women”, replied Sarah through gri ed teeth.

The night wore on. We danced and drank our way through it. Eventually it was late enough to make our excuses and leave so Sarah poured me into the taxi and we headed home. “Be honest. Do I really look nice?” “You look absolootelee deevine dahling (hic!) and I don’t care what Debi said.”

“Just here thank you!” Tes ly, I cut him dead. Sipping coffee in the kitchen, I no ced Sarah busy on my phone. “What are you doing?” “I’m just ordering myself a new LBD online. It’s a bargain, only £200. And isn’t PayPal so convenient?”

“Why, what did she say? You said she didn’t reply. Tom?”

“But you haven’t got a PayPal account.”

Then, our chauffeur, a skinny young man with a pierced nose decided to weigh in with his two penneth. “Take no no ce love, my wife has the exact same dress and it looks great on her. Mind you, hers isn’t white, it’s bla‐”

“I know. But you have.” And so, the wheels of married life turn endlessly onwards.... Follow Tom @groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

Hobbies By Kate McLelland A Hobby That’s Worth Droning On About Drones are much in the news these days: whether it’s shoo ng a spectacular wildlife image or zooming too close to a passenger plane, these popular flying machines have had their share of good and bad press reports. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may be the latest gadget‐of‐ choice but pilotless flying vehicles have a long and surprising history. In 1849 the Austrians launched a largely unsuccessful unmanned bomb a ack on Venice, using balloons (planes were yet to be invented) and unmanned torpedos also played a part in the First World War. The first remote‐controlled pilotless aircra was invented in 1935 and World War II saw the use of UAVs on both sides, but when the US Air Force lost over 5,000 airmen in the Vietnam War, drones began to be used extensively. They undoubtedly saved further loss of life but these large, expensive, jet‐powered cra proved hard to recover and many were lost during opera ons. If you are thinking of buying one for yourself or a family member, be warned, as you can incur some pre y he y penal es if you let your drone infringe airspace regula ons. The Air Naviga on Order states that no unmanned cra can be flown within 50 metres of a person, vehicle or building – unless the people, vehicles or buildings in ques on are “under your control”.

Page 44

That means even that flying a drone in your own back garden is not permi ed unless your neighbour’s property is at least 50m away. If you’re in a public space, such as a park, you are not allowed to fly within 150m of any “congested area” and you must avoid filming in places such as sports fields where crowds are gathered. Even though you may be able to receive live, streamed video from the drone’s loca on, you should not let it stray out of your line of sight. Businesses that want to use a drone for commercial purposes must apply for a permit from the Civil Avia on Authority before they a empt a flight close to people or property. A number of recrea onal users have already been convicted for offences that include flying too close to the rides at Alton Towers and photographing Devonshire landscapes without the landowner’s consent. It cost one man over £4,000 in fines and court fees when his UAV flew near a road bridge and over a nuclear installa on.

If you’re s ll keen to own a drone you can pick up a fly‐only model from under £30. A more advanced device, which lets you steer from a smartphone or tablet while a camera streams live images or records video footage, will cost around £250‐ £300. As long as the rules and regula ons are observed, you’ll get hours of enjoyment from flying these clever li le gadgets, but do set aside some me to master the techniques you’ll need before you a empt that perfect bird’s eye view shot. Here are some basic rules to follow while you are learning: avoid windy condi ons and operate the drone in a park or grassy field well away from people, animals and parked cars. Turn off your mobile phone and try not to let other distrac ons affect your concentra on. With a bit of prac ce, you’ll soon be flying like a pro, but just remember: if your expensive UAV ends up in a tree, just don’t go droning on about it…

• Itching or scratchy eyes • Sore eyes • Redness and inflamma on • Dry eyes • Eye rubbing If so you could be suffering from blephari s. This is a long term inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the lid and base of the eyelashes. Anyone can get blephari s but the prevalence increases with age since as we get older we make fewer natural an bodies in our tears. As the eyelids can be difficult to keep clean, overgrowth of bacteria, biofilm, scurf and debris can accumulate over the years and the toxins released from bacteria

can cause irrita on and subsequently damage the eyelids and tear glands.

The Procedure

Inter Eyecare now provide the most up to date treatment available to alleviate this troublesome condi on. The procedure is called BlephEx and is en rely painless , using patented and revolu onary

equipment which cleans along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfolia ng your eyelids. The procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes, is well tolerated and is typically repeated at 6 monthly intervals if needed. Old Wives and Ancient Greeks Mums, nurses and ‘old wives’ know the benefits of a packet of frozen peas on a bad sprain or a bruise. In fact there are wri ngs from as far back as the Ancient Greeks pronouncing the benefits of cold treatments for acute injuries. Cold drinks and baths using natural ice and snow were used in those early days before the introduc on of ar ficial ice in 1755... Loughborough CryoSpa takes this aid to healing a stage or two further relying on four basic factors to achieve a therapeu c effect: Turbulence, Temperature, Pressure and Salinity. It rehabilitates parts of the body in ways other techniques don’t or cannot. 42 jets aerate the water and the body loses heat through convec on as well as conduc on (similar to wind chill). The massage effect s mulates the

muscles and is beneficial for certain condi ons of muscle injury or strain. Cold decreases pain and muscle spasm, reducing ssue metabolism and blood flow at the start of treatment which leads to reduced swelling, bruising and easing of ght ligaments and connec ve ssue. Cryotherapy can provide significant pain relief with few side effects. Deeper immersion increases the pressure on the injury, aiding the dispersion of accumulated fluids from the site of the injury. The salinity of the water aids the healing process; higher salt concentra on has an increased drawing effect, speeding up the dispersal of the fluids around the injury. Mums, nurses, ‘old wives’ and Ancient Greeks will also tell you that salt water has a very posi ve healing and cleansing effect on cuts and wounds.

Pets Page Why you mustn’t leave your dog in a hot car Leaving your dog in a hot car with li le ven la on makes it prone to heat stroke in a ma er of minutes. Dogs’ extreme sensi vity to heat means that even if you have le the windows open and provided water, their wellbeing is at serious risk.

Heat stroke occurs when the dog becomes unable to cool itself down. Excessive pan ng and red gums are signs of overhea ng, but if you see a dog that is also vomi ng or displays a lack of coordina on, you need to act quickly.

Are Rabbits Really a Low Profile Pet? As lovely as rabbits are, especially as a first pet, you may be surprised to know they can be just as costly and me-consuming to care for as dogs and cats. When you calculate the cost of a rabbit hutch, food, straw and a run, it quickly adds up, so here are some facts you might want to consider before giving in to the children’s wishes: • Your rabbit will need exercise as much as any other pet, and

Page 52

What to do in the case of heat stroke • Contact a vet straight away • Offer the dog cool rather than cold water, in small amounts • Move them into the shade • Wrap in cool damp cloths, par cularly the head The use of cool water is an important factor as opposed to water that is too cold, otherwise you could send the dog into a state of shock. Why are dogs so sensi ve to heat? Dogs are not able to release heat through their skin as humans do – they cool down by pan ng, and also via their nose and the pads on a hutch on its own simply isn’t big enough. You’ll need to buy a rabbit run of around 8’ x 4’ to allow your rabbit the exercise it needs. • Vets’ fees for regular checkups can be expensive, and aren’t covered by insurance. Vaccina ons against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease will be needed. • Flystrike is a par cular issue for rabbits. During warm weather they are prone to having flies lay eggs on their skin. These hatch into maggots, which if unno ced, feed on the rabbit’s flesh causing serious skin issues.

their feet. As a result, irreparable damage to internal organs occurs very quickly when they overheat, and many dogs do not recover. Short‐nosed breeds including pugs and bulldogs are par cularly suscep ble to heat stroke, as are overweight dogs. Even on a cloudy day, they may struggle to cool themselves down. h p://dogs.about.com/od/ dogandpuppyhealth/qt/ heatstroke.htm h p://www.thekennelclub.org. uk/our‐resources/kennel‐ clubcampaigns/ dont‐cook‐your‐dog/ By Ann Haldon • Dental problems are common ‐ up to 75% of household rabbits are diagnosed with dental disease according to Rabbit Awareness Week. • Neutering is recommended by vets, and again, is not covered by pet insurance. Bringing a rabbit inside the house means that you’ll need to supervise it carefully to make sure it doesn’t chew through cables and wires. Rabbits also require daily grooming, especially longhaired breeds, as hair balls can be a problem if they block the stomach. By Ann Haldon
