What’s On at The GCR
Goodbye Budgens, Hello Waitrose Waitrose, food shop of the John Lewis Partnership, opens in Mountsorrel in May Budgens franchised store, owned by Soar Valley farmer Andrew Fear un l bought back about a year ago, struggled to draw in the customers a er the fire at the building on Granite Way in 2011. It will become the sixth Waitrose shop in Leicestershire and the first branch to open in the county since 2012. Budgens’ staff employed at the branch will transfer to Waitrose and a further 40 jobs will be created as part of the mul ‐million pound investment being made in the store. All employees will become Partners in the John Lewis Partnership and as such will have a stake in the success of the business, a say in how it is run and a share in profits. Last year, exis ng Partnership employees received the equivalent of almost six week’s wages in bonus, so a significant propor on of profits remain in the communi es Waitrose serve. Budgens in Mountsorrel will con nue to trade un l the end of February. It will then be handed over to Waitrose in late March with the new shop opening on the 5th May. Waitrose has also announced it will be launching its Community Ma ers and Partner Volunteering schemes which will see £6,000 and 100 hours donated to local causes nominated by customers each year. When we started Soar Valley Life, four years ago, there was very li le house building anywhere in Leicestershire. The world was in the worst financial crisis since the Wall Street crash and the Great Depression that followed. Mortgages were impossible to obtain, unless you didn’t need one; the future seemed hopeless and the end was nigh it seemed. Then, almost overnight, the Tories got in again, Osborne gave the economy a boost and we thought, maybe austerity had been a put up job all the me! Suddenly ‘For Sale’ boards sprung up on every street, building sites blossomed, renova on began in mothballed listed building conversions and everything seemed hunky dory. It was ‘business as usual’ ‐ as if the credit crunch had never happened. A quick scan on the internet reveals that all the top ten house building companies have developments in Leicestershire: there are mul ple new build sites in Loughborough and ten of the largest Soar Valley villages. With our distributors repor ng new streets and more houses each month we are having to increase our print run to meet our distribu on schedules. In May, we have decided to increase our numbers to 35,000 to include East Leake and the new houses in Birstall. The real proof of this growth though, for us at Burton Towers at least, could be that in this edi on we have our first major house builder promo ng their new homes in our magazine. (See Davidsons Homes on page 12). S ll more proof that our region is on the up and an even be er place to be, comes with the announcement of a new Waitrose store right in the middle of the Soar Valley. (See page 4 and also the insert in April’s delivery just before the store opens on May 5th). But of course, if you are like us and your home is where your heart is, in our wonderful Soar Valley, all this is academic. The wide isles in Waitrose will be nice though...

How many mes have you seen, or been the vic m of, down‐right dangerous driving by another and wished that a policemen had also seen what you had experienced and nabbed the perpetrator? Well now your wish can come true. It takes a li le forethought and effort on your part, but if it helps to get numpty drivers and, frankly, those who seem to have li le regard for human life when driving, off the road and given their just desserts, then I think it’s me and money well spent. The use of the dash‐board mounted camera is compara vely recent in the UK, although it is rising. This is in contrast to Russia, where, judging from the hours of Youtube dash‐cam uploads, its use seems universal. Your own insurance protec on Fi ng one to your car is quite simple and reasonably inexpensive to do, certainly when you consider that the material it captures could save you a fortune in insurance.
But what do you do with that footage if you do record bad, dangerous or illegal driving? You could contact the police directly and show them the evidence, but your camera may not have recorded enough material for charges to be brought. Alterna vely, you could consider submi ng it to the PoliceWitness.com website. The aim of the site is to highlight dangerous driving and that those responsible are now having their ac ons recorded. They also act as a conduit to the police and insurance companies when claims or charges are brought. You may not have been the only one recording an incident, so the site can act as a collec on point for other footage of the same incident, thereby increasing the chances of a prosecu on. An addi onal incen ve for ge ng a dash‐cam is that, to help insurance companies prove liability, it may also pay for itself.

Dividend Tax
From 6 April 2016 HM Revenue & Custom's new dividend tax comes into effect which will, unfortunately, result in a significant tax increase for most limited company owners. The no onal 10% tax credit on dividends will be abolished and individuals will receive a £5,000 tax‐ free dividend allowance. Dividend income received over the £5,000 allowance will be taxed at 7.5% if the individual is a basic rate tax payer and 32.5% if they are a higher rate tax payer rising to 38.1% if they are an addi onal rate tax payer. For example, if a company director and shareholder received a salary equal to their personal allowance and net dividends of £30,000.00 in the 2015/16 tax year their income tax liability would amount to approximately £348.00 however the same level of income would a ract an income tax bill of £1,875.00 in the 2016/17 year. Inheritance Tax Changes Last Summer, the Chancellor announced significant changes to rules on Inheritance Tax (IHT), including the phased increase of the IHT allowance. This will eventually rise to £1million for married couples who own their own home. For some the change is welcome, but not for those without children, or who do not own their home. The current tax‐free amount, known as the ‘nil rate band’, stands at £325,000 for an individual and £650,000 for married couples, or those in a civil partnership, who leave their estates to each other. The nil rate band levels will remain the same; the amount over the nil rate band is taxable at 40%. For deaths a er 6 April 2017 an addi onal IHT allowance, known as the ‘main residence nil rate band’ (MRNRB) will also be available. This new relief will only be applicable if a main residence is inherited by direct descendants, such as children, step‐children or grandchildren.
The tax‐free MRNRB amount will be introduced at £100,000 per person, and will increase by £25,000 each year un l it reaches £175,000 per person in 2020. From then, if the MRNRB applies, up to £500,000 of a single person’s estate will be free from IHT; for married couples up to £1million will be tax‐ free. Unfortunately, estates worth over £2million may lose some or all of the tax‐free MRNRB; the allowance will be reduced by £1 for every £2 over the £2million threshold. Where a person has sold or downsized their home on or a er 8 July 2015 the tax‐free MRNRB will s ll be available, provided that the proceeds of the sale of the home are passed to their direct descendants. Nicky Morgan MP Many readers will have heard of the Mountsorrel Railway Project. Run by volunteers and led by the indefa gable Steve Cramp, they have not only recreated the Mountsorrel branch line from the Great Central Railway but are now mid-way through opening a heritage centre... I had the privilege of visi ng the centre recently and hearing more about their plans. The centre will have a lovely café as well as a visitors centre for all of us to find out more about the line and local history. I was par cularly pleased to hear about the work they are planning with local schools. Local pupils have already been involved in ecology study sessions and restoring some of the wagons for the line. Steve and his team are doing an amazing job for our local area. Please do visit when the café and the centre open soon. I was delighted to receive details about a local Women’s Ins tute branch – the Charnwood Women’s Ins tute Girls (or Wigs) – who meet at East Goscote. The Women’s Ins tute celebrated its centenary last year and I know there are other successful WI branches in the Loughborough and Charnwood area, including Shepshed where I spoke a couple of years ago. Details can be found at www.thewi.org.uk I recently met with local representa ves from the Big Lo ery Fund and hope to hold an open session for them at my offices. The Big Lo ery Fund run a number of programmes and they are looking for bids from our area par cularly under the Awards for All and the Reaching Communi es programmes. Finally I am privileged to con nue in my work as Secretary of State for Educa on and Minister for Women and Equali es. It has been a busy start to the year with many school visits. I am pleased to have started the process of reforming our vital children’s social services with more investment in training great social workers and tackling those services which are not yet good enough. Another issue we have pledged to address is the con nuing gender pay gap. New regula ons will mean companies and public sector organisa ons will have to publish informa on about their pay gap.

Chicken in Red Wine
Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes
This is a quick, easy and flavoursome way to serve chicken. Use a full-bodied red wine such as a Burgundy for the best flavour, although there is no need to buy a really pricy one!

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4‐5 minutes, turning frequently un l golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slo ed spoon. Add the bu on mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes un l just beginning to brown.

Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and s r in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf.

Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25‐30 minutes or un l the chicken and onions are tender.

Tip
Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then s r the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2‐3 minutes, s rring all the me, un l the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs. This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quan es to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer‐ proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole un l piping hot.

Ingredients: • 2 tbsp olive oil • 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 225g bu on mushrooms • 200g shallots, peeled • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 300ml red wine • 200ml chicken or vegetable stock • 2 tbsp sun‐dried tomato puree • 1 bay leaf • 2tbsp cornflour • Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish • Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve

Serves 10 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus cooling and se ng mes
This delicious citrus flavoured sponge is made in a classic ring-shaped bundt n. You’ll find them in most good cook shops and larger supermarkets, or you can use an ordinary 1.5L capacity ring mould n instead.

Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Thoroughly grease a 22‐23cm Bundt n (measured across the top) with bu er then lightly dust with flour, pping out the excess. Put the bu er and sugar in a large bowl and beat together un l pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then si over the flour and baking powder and fold in along with the orange zest and juice. Fold in enough of the milk to give a so dropping consistency.

Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared n and gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 40‐50 minutes, or un l the cake is risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the n for 5 minutes then carefully turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

For the icing, si the icing sugar into a bowl then beat in the orange juice to make a smooth and thick icing. Drizzle the icing over the top of the cake, le ng it drizzle down the sides. Leave in a cool place un l set.

Understanding Diabe c Re nopathy What is diabe c re nopathy? Diabe c re nopathy occurs when the re na is damaged and occurs in anyone who has diabetes. It can cause visual impairment that, without treatment, is likely to get worse over me. How does diabetes cause diabe c re nopathy? In diabetes, without effec ve treatment, levels of sugar in the blood are higher than normal. Consistently high levels of sugar cause changes to small blood vessels in the eye, resul ng in eye damage. Changes to the levels of fats in your blood (e.g. cholesterol, triglycerides) and high blood pressure can contribute to re nopathy. How can I reduce the risk of diabe c re nopathy? Maintain good control of blood sugar, fats and blood pressure including regular exercise and stopping smoking. You should discuss the right levels of blood sugar, fats and blood pressure for you with your GP. Your treatment should be tailored to these targets and progress monitored regularly. You should a end an annual eye screening clinic. This is important, as visual symptoms of diabe c re nopathy only occur when the disease is quite advanced. Screening will
detect damage early, allowing earlier and more effec ve treatment. What happens at the screening clinic? Eye drops will be used to widen your pupils. A special digital camera will be used to take a photograph of the re na. The eye drops may cause your vision to be blurred and make your eyes sensi ve to light, so it is important not to drive on the day and sunglasses will help to reduce the sensi vity to light. As I already visit the eye screening clinic, do I need to see my optometrist annually? It is vital you see your optometrist annually as an eye test checks not just for diabe c re nopathy, but looks out for other eye condi ons as well.

Gardens can seem ordinary un l rhythm is introduced‌ It is not the individual objects in a garden that are important; it is how the objects relate to one another and the spaces they deďŹ ne. A simple way to introduce rhythm is to repeat an architectural form. This can be achieved with plan ng, using

Damage to plant roots by vine weevil larvae shows by the plants star ng to wilt. On inspec on the roots will have been badly eaten, and you may see larvae among them. Apply chemical or biological control if larvae are present, but young and containerised plants are unlikely to recover once badly damaged. Aphids (above) can mul ply rapidly during mild spells. Remove early infesta ons by hand to prevent the problem ge ng out of hand. Protect sweet pea
plants in par cular, as they can get sweet pea viruses. Watch out for downy mildew and black spot on winter pansies. Remove dead leaves from around the basal rose es of alpine plants to prevent ro ng. Top dress spring‐ flowering alpines with grit or gravel to show off the plants and help prevent ro ng around the neck.

Sowing & Plan ng Hardy annuals can be sown in pots or modules to provide colour in the garden. In mild areas you can sow directly outside. Marking out irregularly shaped seedbeds and broadcas ng dri s of different seed gives a more natural look. Sweet peas can be sown outside this month. Place autumn‐sown sweet peas in a sunny posi on, perhaps on a high shelf in the greenhouse that gets plenty of light. Sow summer bedding plants in a heated propagator or under glass. Early spring is an ideal me to plant herbaceous perennials, including Geranium, Astran a and Oriental poppies. Plant summer‐flowering bulbs. Prepare the soil first, to ensure that drainage is sufficient to prevent the bulbs ro ng. Anemone coronaria tubers need par cularly well‐drained soils.
Plan a con nuous crop of cut flowers for this summer. Perennials such as delphiniums and annuals can be grown to produce a useful and beau ful display. Indoor forced bulbs that were in the house for winter displays, but which have now finished flowering, can now be planted into the garden, taking care not to disturb the roots. Into April apply a general purpose fer liser to borders and beds. Take care not to damage emerging shoots, or to burn them with fer liser. Put supports in place for perennials before they get too large. Criss‐crossing strings from hidden or decora ve posts work well, allowing stems to grow up in the gaps between strings. Walk instruc ons Postcode: PE9 3QE 3 1/4 Miles 1 1/2 Hours Find a roadside parking space in Duddington, close to the junc on of the A47 and the A43. Local pub the ‘Royal Oak’, no other facili es. The walk appears from the map and instruc ons to be simpler than it actually is on the ground and it might easily turn on an unwary walker and bite. It is always easier to get lost in trees than open ground, I am speaking from personal experience having been badly lost in these woods myself. The walk will be very muddy in wet weather. 1 Start from the ‘Royal Oak’; the A43 is always busy here, cross with care to the signpost at the bridleway almost opposite the turn for the village. Walk upslope on this wide farm road with the hedge to the le , to the embankment. 2 Turn right, around the half circle of road, to the le hand corner of the trees and turn right, with the trees to the right, up to the corner. Follow the road le to the footbridge and cross; bear right along the easily missed narrow path, through the trees. Keep straight on past a marker post on this twisty and some mes overgrown path to a tarmac forest road. 3 Cross and take the very narrow path almost straight on, passing le of the pond and bear le . Keep straight on between trees to the edge of the spinney. Cross the footbridge and the field ahead, which may be under cul va on although a path should be well marked within any crop. 4 Go over the footbridge here and bear right across this field a track should again be visible, to the marker post at the corner of Buxton Wood, which is part of the bigger Westhay Wood. An op on in very wet weather is to take the farm road right then le to the corner of the trees. Walk along the track between the hedge and the trees to the spacious junc on with the no ce board on the right for Fineshade Wood. 5 Turn right on this track for a mile with the field to the right and then through trees back to the A43. The Smell of the Greasepaint, the Roar of the Crowd As addic ve occupa ons go, being involved in live musical theatre has to be somewhere near the top of the list for conver ng excitement, nervous energy and dedica on into the pure sa sfac on of a job well done... Some of Mary’s fondest memories stem from her me as a member of Coalville Amateur Opera c Society and she can warble along to most of the old show tunes. One of our greatest pleasures these days is to a end a show; there’s something magical about being in the audience of a live musical.

“Tom? Tom! Put down that silly magazine and listen.” “It’s not a silly magazine. Look at that split‐screen camper ‐ isn’t she lovely?” “Amazing. Listen, it’s about Hannah.” My ears pricked up at the men on of our teenage protégé. “What about Hannah?” “Well, you know that boy she likes at school? The good‐looking one that’s taller than you?” “No. But do con nue.” “Well ‐ and don’t breathe a word ‐ they’re talking.” “What about?” “Does it ma er? The main thing is that they’re talking. Isn’t it exci ng!” “Thrilling. Are they talking now? Do you want me to go and listen?” “No! Don’t be nosey. Just be happy that she’s talking to a nice boy. Here she comes. And no smart remarks thank you.” And with that Hannah, mobile device posi oned firmly in front of her face, plopped down on the sofa opposite. A pause, then. “So, your mother informs me that you’re talking to a boy.” “Mmnn.” “Are you talking now? Well it’s not much of a conversa on.” Hannah rolled her eyes as she held up her phone. “Er, Snapchat, hello?” “And how do you do Snapchat?” “You just ‘do’ Snapchat, OK?” Sarah tried to explain. “Tom, it’s a messaging app. It’s like tex ng but more... teenagey.” “Well I was tex ng Nigel last night asking could I borrow his nail gun

and I don’t remember anyone ge ng giddy about that.” “Tom, talking, in this context means that they are, well you know, talking.” “I think I’ve just about grasped that concept, thank you. And so what comes next?” Sarah leant over and eyes widening said, “Well a er talking, if it goes well, then it’s... speaking!” My mouth dropped open in astonishment ‐ who’d have thought? I was about to throw in my twopenn’orth when up piped Hannah. “Er, I am actually here in the room you know? For goodness sake!” (Or words to that effect). With parental embarrassment now at its absolute zenith, Hannah, her eyes rolling like a zombie, flounced out in disgust. My Dearly Beloved and I returned to watching Wanted Down Under. “That wife is bullying him into going, why doesn’t he just tell her? I say dear, she’s.. what’s the ma er?” “Tom, a er the way you spoke to Hannah about that boy, well I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up not speaking at all. Anyway I’m not staying here, I’m off out.” “Where to?” “None of your business. And do you know why? Because…we’re not speaking!” Fortunately, in short order Hannah and her new squeeze did in fact begin “speaking” and very soon a er (proving the ancient maxim that ‘faint heart ne’er won fair lady’) Hannah was asked out on a date to the cinema. And who was the chauffeur for this roman c interlude? You know it brother. So, a er just three hours of hysteria about which ou it to wear (during which me I went about my chores with Benny Goodman playing blissfully on my
fruit‐based MP3 player) we were ready. Then, just as I pulled up outside an annoyingly large detached house, Hannah self combusted with embarrassment. Why? Because I (not unreasonably in my view) dared to beep my horn. “Dad!! For goodness sake!” (Or words to that effect). Eventually, Adam appeared. Gangly, spo y and smelling of a mixture of nerves and Hugo Boss, he flopped into the back seat. “ThnkufrtkngustocinewrldmrHug hes.” “Don’t men on it...I think.” The whole journey was conducted in complete, stony silence. Eventually we reached the Mul plex. Wordlessly, the happy couple exited via a rear door. I shouted a er them, “Oi, I thought you two were speaking?” Cue eye rolls all round! And so Adam and Hannah became a couple and all was well. That is, un l three weeks ago when Sarah rushed in carrying an emergency tub of Ben and Jerry’s. I dropped everything and plumped up the cushions. “Tom? Can Hannah sit next to you for a bit, she needs her Dad.” And so, as a tear‐stained daughter snuggled up next to me and began scooping ice cream determinedly into her mouth, we se led down to watch Annie Hall. Hobbies By Kate McLelland Enjoy Hands-On History With The Detectorists Last year the BBC TV series “Detectorists” (starring MacKenzie Crook and Toby Jones) not only won a BAFTA, but a racted thousands of fans. The series seems to have sparked a fresh interest in metal detec ng, despite the fact that its main characters seldom find anything more valuable than the odd bo le top or metal bu on. Some detectorists, however, seem to have the magic touch. 1n 2012, 86‐year‐old Cliff Massey dug up a stash of old coins in a field in Wrexham, North Wales and last summer he returned to the same field to discover a 15th century gold ring together with a 500 year old hoard of gold and silver coins. If your appe te has been whe ed by the many similar stories that have appeared in the media in recent years, here’s some advice to help you get started as a detectorist: What you need How much me will you spend on your new hobby? If it’s just the odd weekend you may not want to invest too much in your detector. A starter model can be purchased from around £140 but a top of the range detector can cost upwards of £1,000. A reputable dealer can offer expert knowledge on the range and depth of the device’s detec ng capabili es, ba ery life, weight and ease of handling. But be warned: the more expensive detectors are o en quite complex to use, so unless you are comfortable using new technology, your new gadget may end up unused in the cupboard under the stairs. As well as a detector, your basic kit should include good quality digging tools such as a strong trowel or spade, waterproof clothing, sturdy boots or Wellingtons, gloves, a water bo le, First Aid equipment, a notepad and pencil, insect repellent and a Finds Bag, to protect those freshly‐dug artefacts. For your own safety, be sure to tell somebody where you are going on every ou ng and take along a fully charged mobile phone.

Where to search Try gardens, riverbanks, beaches and common land (subject to by‐laws) but get permission from the landowner first if you want to dig on private land. Establish a finds sharing agreement (signed by both par es) before you dig to avoid disagreements in the event of a valuable discovery. Scheduled sites are protected areas of special historic interest (you will find lists in local museums or by going to Historic England site www.historicengland.org.uk) and you will need local authority permission to dig in those areas. Dealing with finds If you are fortunate enough to find something of value, you will be expected to share any money received from a sale 50%‐50% with the owner of the land. The website www.finds.org.uk gives a full defini on of the rules surrounding ‘Treasure Trove’. All items classed as treasure must be handed over to the state: a commi ee then decides on the size of the reward to be given to the finder and landowner. The idea of discovering hidden treasure may be exci ng, but metal detec ng isn’t just about the money. It’s a popular hobby that is open to all age groups and can be par cularly beneficial to older par cipants as it keeps you physically and mentally fit. Metal detec ng is also a pas me that offers an unrivalled, hands‐on approach to history that will expand your knowledge and apprecia on of this country’s rich heritage.
